The Monument Erected in Barcelona in 1954 in Honor of Archer Milton Huntington, the Founder of The Hispanic Society of America, and His Wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington, the Eminent Sculptress.

It was in 1954 that Barcelona became the first city to pay tribute to Archer Milton Huntington (New York, 1870 - Bathel, Connecticut, 1955), by erecting a monument to the memory of this outstanding collector and Hispanist, and to hiswife, Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington (Cambridge, 1876 - California, 1973). An excellent sculptor, Anna Hyatt Huntington was also unstinting in her support of her husband¿s Hispanic interest. The monument was Barcelona's way of recognizing and paying tribute to this greatly respected American collector and philanthropist. Huntington played a major role in refuting "Prescott's Paradigm", named after the historian whose work on Spain did much to further the Black Legend.3 Moreover, Huntington occupied an important place in American Hispanic Studies, along with such other outstanding names as George Ticknor (Boston, 1791 - 1871), Washington Irving (New York, 1783 - 1859) and Henry Longfellow (1807 - 1882).

Dynamics of turing patterns under spatiotemporal forcing

We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the dynamical response of Turing patterns to a spatiotemporal forcing in the form of a traveling-wave modulation of a control parameter. We show that from strictly spatial resonance, it is possible to induce new, generic dynamical behaviors, including temporally modulated traveling waves and localized traveling solitonlike solutions. The latter make contact with the soliton solutions of Coullet [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 724 (1986)] and generalize them. The stability diagram for the different propagating modes in the Lengyel-Epstein model is determined numerically. Direct observations of the predicted solutions in experiments carried out with light modulations in the photosensitive chlorine dioxide-iodine-malonic acid reaction are also reported.

A LIBRARY IN THE MAKING: Pioneer History of the Territorial and State Library of Iowa,October 1912

The discovery of early manuscript reports of Territorial and State Librarians, buried in the mass of old official papers transferred from the several departments of State to the new Department of Archives in the Historical Building, has suggested the propriety of completing as far as possible, the historical record of Iowa's State Library, "from the earliest period to the present time." After a thorough research through the papers on file in the Archives Department, the published Journals and departmental reports in the State Library and documents and private papers loaned me by Mr. Newton R. Parvin, librarian of the Iowa Masonic Library, Cedar Rapids. I am now able to present the following historical sketch, Supplemented by the hitherto unpublished papers referred to this filling a gap in the history of a State institution which from very small beginnings has grown to large proportions and has made for itself a firm place in the respect and esteem of every citizen of Iowa.

De la máquina de Turing a la 'máquina' de Boltzmann: dinámica interactiva y fenómenos globales en redes conexionistas

A partir del análisis y crítica de algunos de los presupuestos básicos de la orientación dominante en psicologia cognitiva se discuten las posibilidades del planteamiento conexionista al cual atribuimos, en el marco de los distintos niveles explicativos posibles, el carácter de alternativa verdaderamente psicológica. Las argumentaciones centrales se basan en laspropiedades supuestamente atribuibles a las representaciones (particularmente, su carácter compuesto, sistemático y abstracto) y en la valoración de las posibilidades de aproximación a esas características desde el punto de vista conexionista. Se valora la posibilidad de complementar el enfoque microestructural propio del conexionismo con el análisis del comportamiento global del tip0 de redes implicadas. Esta dinámica global, analizable desde una perspectiva topológica a partir del concepto de estabilidad estructural, es susceptible de mostrar modifcaciones cualitativas que pueden asociarse con algunos fenómenos estudiados clásicarnente en la psicologia del pensamiento y en otros ámbitos

This paper on Work Accident Indemnity in Iowa, as well as the volume on the History of Work Accident Indemnity in Iowa, is the outgrowth of the author's, E. H. Downey, study of the History of Labor Legislation in Iowa, which was published by The State Historical Society of Iowa in the Iowa Economic History Series. Dealing with the vital subject of employers' liability and workmen's compensation, Professor Downey's paper will, it is thought, be found especially helpful to those interested in present day legislation.
