The five room temperature ionic liquids: 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CnMIM][N(Tf)(2)], n = 2, 4, 8, 10) and n-hexyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([N-6222][N(Tf)(2)]) were investigated as solvents in which to study the electrochemical oxidation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine (TMPD) and N,N,N',N'-tetrabutyl-paraphenylenediamine (TBPD), using 20 mul micro-samples under vacuum conditions. The effect of dissolved atmospheric gases on the accessible electrochemical window was probed and determined to be less significant than seen previously for ionic liquids containing alternative anions. Chronoamperometric transients recorded at a microdisk electrode were analysed via a process of non-linear curve fitting to yield values for the diffusion coefficients of the electroactive species without requiring a knowledge of their initial concentration. Comparison of experimental and simulated cyclic voltammetry was then employed to corroborate these results and allow diffusion coefficients for the electrogenerated species to be estimated. The diffusion coefficients obtained for the neutral compounds in the five ionic liquids via this analysis were, in units of 10(-11) m(2) s(-1), 2.62, 1.87, 1.12, 1.13 and 0.70 for TMPD. and 1.23, 0.80, 0.40, 0.52 and 0.24 for TBPD (listed using the same order for the ionic liquids as stated above). The most significant consequence of changing the cationic component of the ionic liquid was found to be its effect on the solvent viscosity; the diffusion coefficient of each species was found to be approximately inversely proportional to viscosity across the series of ionic liquids, in accordance with Walden's rule. The electrochemical reduction of oxygen is reported in four room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) based on quaternary alkyl -onium cations and heavily fluorinated anions in which the central atom is either nitrogen or phosphorus. Data were collected using cyclic voltammetry and potential step chronoamperometry at gold, platinum, and glassy carbon disk electrodes of micrometer dimension under water-free conditions at a controlled temperature. Analysis via fitting, to appropriate theoretical equations was then carried out to obtain kinetic and thermodynamic information pertaining to the electrochemical processes observed. In the quaternary ammonium electrolytes, reduction of oxygen was found to occur reversibly to give stable superoxide, in an analogous manner to that seen in conventional aprotic solvents such as dimethyl sufoxide and acetonitrile. The most significant difference is in the relative rate of diffusion; the diffusion coefficients of oxygen in the RTILs are an order of magnitude lower than in common organic solvents, and for superoxide these values are reduced by a further factor of 10. In the quaternary phosphonium ionic liquids, however, more complex voltammetry is observed, akin to that expected for the reduction of oxygen in acidified organic media. This is shown to be consistent with the occurrence of a proton abstraction reaction between the electrogenerated superoxide and quaternary alkyl phosphonium cations following the initial electron transfer.

Four studies are reported that employed an object location task to assess temporal-causal reasoning. In Experiments 1-3, successfully locating the object required a retrospective consideration of the order in which two events had occurred. In Experiment 1, 5- but not 4-year-olds were successful; 4-year-olds also failed to perform at above-chance levels in modified versions of the task in Experiments 2 and 3. However, in Experiment 4, 3-year-olds were successful when they were able to see the object being placed first in one location and then in the other, rather than having to consider retrospectively the sequence in which two events had happened. The results suggest that reasoning about the causal significance of the temporal order of events may not be fully developed before 5 years. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Performance and documentation have long been characterised as oppositional practices, separated by competing voices which argue the virtues of disappearance and reproducibility. In response to this state of affairs, the recently completed Dialogic Evidence project was designed to explore the possibility (and the limits) of a productive co-existence between performance and documentation practices. In this paper I reflect on this project’s processes and outcomes, particular highlighting the potential of social web technologies as a collaborative means to archive, discuss and remember live performance.

We study the predictability of a theoretical model for earthquakes, using a pattern recognition algorithm similar to the CN and M8 algorithms known in seismology. The model, which is a stochastic spring-block model with both global correlation and local interaction, becomes more predictable as the strength of the global correlation or the local interaction is increased.

In this paper, we report the synthesis and biological activity of a series of dihydroisocoumarin analogues Conjugated with fatty acids, alcohols, or amines, of varying hydrocarbon chain length and degree of unsaturation, to (he dihydroisocoumarins, kigelin and mellein, at the C-7 and C-8 positions on the core dihydroisocoumarin structure. These compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against human breast cancer (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468) and melanoma cells (SK-MEL-28 and Malme-3M) using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Two compounds Conjugated with gamma-linolenyl alcohol (18:3 n-6) demonstrated potent antiproliferative activity in vitro with one of these 4-hydroxy-3-oxo-1.3-dihydro-isobenzofuran-5-carboxylic acid octadeca-6,9,12-trienyl ester, demonstrating significant antitumor activity in vivo ill a number of human tumor xenograft models.

We report the optimization of a series of non-MPEP site metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGlu5) pos. allosteric modulators (PAMs) based on a simple acyclic ether series. Modifications led to a gain of MPEP site interaction through incorporation of a chiral amide in conjunction with a nicotinamide core. A highly potent PAM, 8v (VU0404251), was shown to be efficacious in a rodent model of psychosis. These studies suggest that potent PAMs within topol. similar chemotypes can be developed to preferentially interact or not interact with the MPEP allosteric binding site.

Data on rock temperatures has previously been collected to characterise typical diurnal regimes, and more recently to describe short-term variability in extreme locations. However, there is also the case that little is understood concerning the impact of extreme events in otherwise temperate environments. Internal stone temperatures (5?cm) collected during the atypical cold extreme experienced, throughout the UK, in December 2010 show a difference between ambient air temperatures and aspect-related thermal differences, particularly concerning temperature lows and the influence of radiative heating. In this case, debris release was not visible; however, laboratory simulations have shown that under such conditions, surface loss does not necessarily negate the occurrence of internal stone modifications. This preparatory sequence of change demonstrates that surface loss is not the result of one process, but rather many operating over time to sufficiently decrease stone strength to facilitate obvious damage.

Introduction : Insulation defects with externalized conductors have been reported in the St. Jude Riata(®) family of defibrillation leads (St. Jude Medical, Sylmar, CA, USA). The objective of the Northern Ireland Riata(®) lead screening program was to identify insulation defects and externalized conductors by systematic fluoroscopic and electrical assessment in a prospectively defined cohort of patients. We sought to estimate the prevalence, identify risk factors, and determine the natural history of this abnormality. Methods : All patients with a Riata(®) lead under follow-up at the Royal Victoria Hospital were invited for fluoroscopic imaging and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator lead parameter checks. Fluoroscopic images were read independently by two cardiologists and the presence of externalized conductors was classified as positive, negative, or borderline. Results: One hundred and sixty-five of 212 patients with a Riata lead were evaluated by fluoroscopy and lead parameter measurements. The mean duration after implantation was 3.98+/-1.43 years. After screening 25 (15%) patients were classified as positive, 137 (83%) negative, and three (1.8%) borderline. Time since implantation (P = 0.001), presence of a single coil lead (P = 0.042), and patient age (P = 0.034) were significantly associated with externalized conductors. The observed rate of externalized conductors was 26.9% for 8-French and 4.7% for 7-French leads. No leads that were identified prospectively with externalized conductors had electrical abnormalities. Seven of 25 (28%) patients had a defective lead extracted by the end of this screening period. Conclusion: A significant proportion (15%) of patients with a Riata lead had an insulation breach 4 years after implantation. High-resolution fluoroscopic imaging in at least two orthogonal views is required to identify this abnormality. (PACE 2012;35:1498-1504).

Our review of paleoclimate information for New Zealand pertaining to the past 30,000 years has identified a general sequence of climatic events, spanning the onset of cold conditions marking the final phase of the Last Glaciation, through to the emergence to full interglacial conditions in the early Holocene. In order to facilitate more detailed assessments of climate variability and any leads or lags in the timing of climate changes across the region, a composite stratotype is proposed for New Zealand. The stratotype is based on terrestrial stratigraphic records and is intended to provide a standard reference for the intercomparison and evaluation of climate proxy records. We nominate a specific stratigraphic type record for each climatic event, using either natural exposure or drill core stratigraphic sections. Type records were selected on thebasis of having very good numerical age control and a clear proxy record. In all cases the main proxy of the type record is subfossil pollen. The type record for the period from ca 30 to ca 18 calendar kiloyears BP (cal. ka BP) is designated in lake-bed sediments from a small morainic kettle lake (Galway tarn) in western South Island. The Galway tarn type record spans a period of full glacial conditions (Last Glacial Coldest Period, LGCP) within the Otira Glaciation, and includes three cold stadials separated by two cool interstadials. The type record for the emergence from glacial conditions following the termination of the Last Glaciation (post-Termination amelioration) is in a core of lake sediments from a maar (Pukaki volcanic crater) in Auckland, northern North Island, and spans from ca 18 to 15.64±0.41 cal. ka BP. The type record for the Lateglacial period is an exposure of interbedded peat and mud at montane Kaipo bog, eastern North Island. In this high-resolution type record, an initial mild period was succeeded at 13.74±0.13 cal. ka BP by a cooler period, which after 12.55±0.14 cal. ka BP gave way to a progressive ascent to full interglacial conditions that were achieved by 11.88±0.18 cal. ka BP. Although a type section is not formally designated for the Holocene Interglacial (11.88±0.18 cal. ka BP to the present day), the sedimentary record of Lake Maratoto on the Waikato lowlands, northwestern North Island, is identified as a prospective type section pending the integration and updating of existing stratigraphic and proxy datasets, and age models. The type records are interconnected by one or more dated tephra layers, the ages of which are derived from Bayesian depositional modelling and OxCal-based calibrations using the IntCal09 dataset. Along with the type sections and the Lake Maratoto record, important, well-dated terrestrial reference records are provided for each climate event. Climate proxies from these reference records include pollen flora, stable isotopes from speleothems, beetle and chironomid fauna, and glacier moraines. The regional composite stratotype provides a benchmark against which to compare other records and proxies. Based on the composite stratotype, we provide an updated climate event stratigraphic classification for the New Zealand region. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Traditionally, audio-motor timing processes have been understood as motor output from an internal clock, the speed of which is set by heard sound pulses. In contrast, this paper proposes a more ecologically-grounded approach, arguing that audio-motor processes are better characterized as performed actions on the perceived structure of auditory events. This position is explored in the context of auditory sensorimotor synchronization and continuation timing. Empirical research shows that the structure of sounds as auditory events can lead to marked differences in movement timing performance. The nature of these effects is discussed in the context of perceived action-relevance of auditory event structure. It is proposed that different forms of sound invite or support different patterns of sensorimotor timing. Hence, the temporal information in looped auditory signals is more than just the interval durations between onsets: all metronomes are not created equal. The potential implications for auditory guides in motor performance enhancement are also described.
