Conversations with EFL teachers: toward an understanding of whiteness in the classroom /

Few teachers would question that teaching is a contextual and situational process, yet as Gay (2000) reminds us, too few teachers have sufficient knowledge of how teaching practices reflect dominant cultural values. This qualitative study explored whiteness in the EFL classroom and the relation between teacher identity and pedagogy. This research was shaped by the overarching research questions: How does being white influence teachers' educational practices? How can teachers successfully negotiate crosscultural teaching? Data included open-ended interviews, a content analysis of EFL training materials, and my research and personal journals. The experiences of five EFL teachers form the central focus of this study. My personal story, as a white EFL teacher, is also included throughout this thesis. This study offers a detailed description of the complex and dynamic ways in which these five teachers understood their racial identities, and the classroom decisions they made in response to their understandings. Included in the discussion are the strategies that my participants and I used to subtly resist the notion and exploration of racial privilege. Implications for teacher education programs and possible directions for further study are offered.

Lettre de femme, voix d’homme? Jeux identitaires et effets de travestissement dans la treizième épître familière d’Hélisenne de Crenne

La dernière des treize lettres familières qui forment le premier volet des Epistres familieres et invectives (1539) reste à ce jour la missive la plus difficile à interpréter du recueil d’Hélisenne de Crenne. Son caractère cryptique, la voix masculine qu’y fait entendre l’épistolière et la présence d’allusions amoureuses assurent un caractère singulier à ce texte dont le fonctionnement peut se comprendre — c’est l’hypothèse que propose cet article — comme le résultat d’un travestissement identitaire (une femme s’y exprime à la manière d’un homme), doublé d’un travestissement générique (la lettre familière cache une lettre d’amour). L’expression directe du désir amoureux ne semble possible, dans le recueil, que par ce jeu de travestissements où la rhétorique masque et dévoile tout à la fois, en établissant entre épistolière et destinataire une familiarité affective dont l’existence ne peut être révélée au lecteur que sur le mode du simulacre.

Synthesis And Characterization Ofpolystyrene Supportedcatalytically Active Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimer-Palladium Nanoparticle Conjugates

Poly(amidoamine) dendrimers were synthesized on cross-linked aminomethyl polystyrene. Palladium complexes of supported dendrimers prepared by ligand exchange method were reduced to dendrimernanoparticle conjugates supported on polystyrene resin. The supported nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the Suzuki coupling between aryl boronic acids and aryl halides. Various factors affecting the catalysts performance were studied. Higher generation dendrimers gave well-defined nanoparticles without agglomeration and these particles showed good catalytic performance

Sobre esta institución se han realizado varios trabajos que se inician con el de Verdú-Payá (1958) y Hernandez Pina (1978-1983), continúan con la celebración de los 150 años de la fundación del Instituto en 1987 y la publicación conmemorativa dirigida por Jiménez Madrid, además de las del autor de esta obra, Vidal de Labra, y las de López Fernández y colaboradores.

Elaboración de materiales didácticos CLIL I.

Materiales didácticos para desarrollar unidades CLIL en la asignatura de inglés correspondientes a cada una de las unidades de primero de enseñanza secundaria hasta segundo de bachillerato. Se trata de utilizar la metodología AICLE en la creación de un instrumento bilingüe que aproxime el uso del inglés hacia otras áreas de conocimimiento, en este caso con contendios integrados de Geografía e Historia.

Fronts from integrodifference equations and persistence effects on the Neolithic transition

We extend a previous model of the Neolithic transition in Europe [J. Fort and V. Méndez, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 867 (1999)] by taking two effects into account: (i) we do not use the diffusion approximation (which corresponds to second-order Taylor expansions), and (ii) we take proper care of the fact that parents do not migrate away from their children (we refer to this as a time-order effect, in the sense that it implies that children grow up with their parents, before they become adults and can survive and migrate). We also derive a time-ordered, second-order equation, which we call the sequential reaction-diffusion equation, and use it to show that effect (ii) is the most important one, and that both of them should in general be taken into account to derive accurate results. As an example, we consider the Neolithic transition: the model predictions agree with the observed front speed, and the corrections relative to previous models are important (up to 70%)

Análisis de las estrategias de cohesión territorial en la Unión Europea como instrumento para la gobernanza democrática a raíz de las ampliaciones del 2004 y 2007

En la Unión Europea la relación entre el desarrollo e identidad territorial permite fortalecer la gobernanza democrática en el proceso de ampliación en la medida en que las estrategias de cohesión territorial estén acompañadas por mecanismos de cooperación entre el gobierno local y las instituciones supranacionales que permitan la participación activa del ciudadano en dichos procesos.
