The conformational analysis of a protected homodipeptide of 1-aminocyclopentanecarboxylic acid (Acc5) has been carried out. 1H-nmr studies establish a -turn conformation for Boc-Acc5-Acc5-NHMe in chloroform and dimethylsulfoxide solutions involving the methylamide NH in an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Supportive evidence for the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond is obtained from ir studies. X-ray diffraction studies reveal a type III -turn conformation in the solid state stabilized by a 4 1 hydrogen bond between the Boc CO and methylamide NH groups. The , values for both Acc5 residues are close to those expected for an ideal 310-helical conformation ( ± 60°, ±30°).

The thermodynamic activities of MgO in the NaCl-type solid solutions which can exist in xMgO + (1 x)MnO have been determined in the temperature range 1163 to 1318 K from a solid-state galvanic cell incorporating MgF2 as the solid electrolyte. The activities of MnO have been calculated by a graphical Gibbs-Duhem integration method. The activities of both the components exhibit positive deviations from ideality over the entire composition range. The excess molar enthalpies are found to be positive. Further, xMgO + (1 - x)MnO does not conform to regular-solution behaviour. The origin of the excess thermodynamic properties is discussed in relation to the cationic size disparity and the crystal-field effects.

In recent years there has been an upsurge of interest in the study of organic reactions in the solid state. It is now realised that the crystalline matrix provides an extra-ordinary spatial control on the initiation and progress of these reactions. Electronic and dipolar effects which are important in solution are replaced by structural and geometric effects in solids. These 'spatial' or 'topochemical' aspects are important in understanding the mechanistic details of the reaction. In our laboratory, the thermally induced acyl migration in salicylamides from 0- to N- position in the solid state has been under study (Scheme 1). The structures of the acetyl and benzoyl derivatives (Ia,IIa, Ib and IIb) have been reported.

The conformations of Boc-l-Phe-(AiB)3-OH (1) and Boc-l-Phe-(Aib)3-OMe (2) which correspond to the amino terminal sequence of the emerimicins and antiamoebins have been studied in solution using 270 MHz 1H n.m.r. In dimethyl sulphoxide solution both peptides show the presence of two strongly solvent shielded Aib NH groups, consistent with a consecutive β-turn conformation, involving the Aib(3) and Aib(4) NH groups in intramolecular 4 → I hydrogen bonds. This folded conformation is maintained for 2 in chloroform solution. Nuclear Overhauser effect studies provide evidence for a Type II Phe-Aib β-turn. An X-ray diffraction study of Boc-(d,l)-Phe-(Aib)3-OH establishes a single type III(III′) β-turn conformation with Aib(2)-Aib(3) as the corner residues. A single intramolecular 4 → I hydrogen bond between Phe(I) CO and Aib(4) NH groups is observed in the crystal. The solution conformation may incorporate a consecutive type II-III′ structure for the Phe(1)-Aib(2)-Aib(3) segment, with the initial type II β-turn being destabilized by intermolecular interactions in the solid state.

It is conjectured that the hard sphere system has several distinct solid phases, all but one of which are metastable. The bifurcation theory analysis of freezing is extended to the description of the transition between a supercooled liquid and a disordered solid by defining a restricted phase space for the disordered solid. This approach leads to the prediction of a first order transition between a supercooled hard sphere fluid and a disordered metastable hard sphere solid. The results of the calculation are in qualitative agreement with the results of Woodcock's molecular dynamics computer simulations. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with multivariate analysis techniques was applied to assess phenol content of European oak. NIRS data were firstly collected directly from solid heartwood surfaces: in doing so, the spectra were recorded separately from the longitudinal radial and the transverse section surfaces by diffuse reflectance. The spectral data were then pretreated by several pre-processing procedures, such as multiplicative scatter correction, first derivative, second derivative and standard normal variate. The tannin contents of sawmill collected from the longitudinal radial and transverse section surfaces were determined by quantitative extraction with water/methanol (1:4, by vol). Then, total phenol contents in tannin extracts were measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The NIR data were correlated against the Folin-Ciocalteu results. Calibration models built with partial least squares regression displayed strong correlation - as expressed by high determination correlation coefficient (r2) and high ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) - between measured and predicted total phenols content, and weak calibration and prediction errors (RMSEC, RMSEP). The best calibration was provided with second derivative spectra (r2 value of 0.93 for the longitudinal radial plane and of 0.91 for the transverse section plane). This study illustrates that the NIRS technique when used in conjunction with multivariate analysis could provide reliable, quick and non-destructive assessment of European oak heartwood extractives.

Tie-lines between the corundum and spinel solid solutions have been determined experimentally at 1823 K. Next, activities of FeCr2O4 and FeAl2O4 in the spinel solid solution were determined by combining the tie-line data with literature values for the activities of Cr2O3 and Al2O3 in the corundum phase. Activities and the Gibbs energy of mixing for the spinel solid solution were also obtained from a model based on cation distribution between nonequivalent crystallographic sites in the oxide lattice. The difference between the Gibbs energy of mixing obtained experimentally and from the model has been attributed to a strain enthalpy term which is relatively unchanged in magnitude from the reported at 1373 K. The integral enthalpy of mixing obtained from experimental data at 1373 and 1823 K using the second law is compared with the model result.

The solution and solid-state conformations of the peptide disulfide Boc-Cys-Pro-Aib-Cys-NHMe have been determined by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Cys(4) and methylamide NH groups are solvent shielded in CDCI3 and (CD,),SO, suggesting their involvement in intramolecular hydrogen bonding. On the basis of known stereochemical preferences of Pro and Aib residues, a consecutive @-turn structure is favored in solution. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a highly folded 310 helical conformation for the peptide, with the S-S bridge lying approximately parallel to the helix axis, linking residues 1 and 4. The backbone conformational angles are Cys(1) 4 = -121.1', $ = 65.6"; Pro(2) 4 = -58.9', 4 = -34.0'; Aib(3) 4 = -61.8', $ = -17.9'; Cys(4) 4 = -70.5', $ = -18.6'. Two intramolecular hydrogen bonds are observed between Cys(1) CO--HN Cys(4) and Pro(2) CO--HNMe. The disulfide bond has a right-handed chirality, with a dihedral angle (xss) of 82'.

Short-time analytical solutions of temperature and moving boundary in two-dimensional two-phase freezing due to a cold spot are presented in this paper. The melt occupies a semi-infinite region. Although the method of solution is valid for various other types of boundary conditions, the results in this paper are given only for the prescribed flux boundary conditions which could be space and time dependent. The freezing front propagations along the interior of the melt region exhibit well known behaviours but the propagations along the surface are of new type. The freezing front always depends on material parameters. Several interesting results can be obtained as particular cases of the general results.

Use of chloro and methyl substitution in crystal engineering and their interchangeability in terms of mode of packing have been examined in a series of substituted coumarins. Photoreactivity in the solid state lists been correlated with the crystallograhic structures of these coumarins. The packing of chloro-substituted aromatic compounds has been investigated by analysing the arrangement of 132 compounds. Results substantiate the use of the chloro group as a steering agent and show that the chloro and methyl groups are not always interchangeable.

A 10 MHz pulsed NMR spectrometer, built using mostly solid state devices, is described. The pulse programmer provides 2-pulse, 3-pulse, saturation burst and Carr-Purcell sequences both in repetitive and manual modes of operation. The transmitter has a maximum power output of ∼ 2 kW with a 75 Ω output impedance termination. The total gain of the receiver system is around 120 dB with a minimum band width of 2 MHz. The recovery time of the receiver is ∼ 7 µsec. A two-channel boxcar integrator capable of working in the single channel, differential and double boxcar modes provides signal to noise ratio improvement. The sensitivity and the linearity of the boxcar integrator are ∼ 2 mV and ∼ 0.1% respectively.

Isothermal-isobaric ensemble Monte Carlo simulation studies of adamantane have been carried out at different temperatures. Thermodynamic properties and radial distribution functions calculated by employing a simple potential model based on sitesite interactions show good agreement with experiment and suggest that the solid is orientationally disordered at high temperatures.

During the thermal decomposition of orthorhombic ammonium perchlorate (AP) at 230°C, where the decomposition is only up to 30 wt %, there is an accumulation in the solid of acids, the concentration of which increases up to 15% decomposition, after which it decreases till it reaches the original value. Similar observations have been made in the polystyrene (PS)/AP propellant systems. Aging studies of PS/AP propellants have been carried out earlier [1], where it has been shown that for the aged propellants the thermal decomposition (TD) rate at 230°C and 260°C and ambient pressure burning rate (Image ) both increase and this increase is due to the formation of reactive intermediate “polystyrene peroxide (PSP).” In the present studies it has been observed that during the aging of the propellant at 150°C, the acid is formed and gets accumulated in the propellant, which may also be responsible for the increase in TD rate and perhaps may be more effective than PSP.
