Quinary chalcogenide compounds Cu2.1Zn0.9Sn1-xInxSe4 (0 <= x <= 0.1) were prepared by melting (1170K) followed by annealing (773 K) for 172 h. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data accompanied by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and Raman spectra of all the samples confirmed the formation of a tetragonal kesterite structure with Cu2FeSnS4-type. The thermoelectric properties of all the samples were measured as a function of temperature in the range of 300-780K. The electrical resistivity of all the samples exhibits metallic-like behavior. The positive values of the Seebeck coefficient and the Hall coefficient reveal that holes are the majority charge carriers. The codoping of copper and indium leads to a significant increase of the electrical resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient as a function of temperature above 650 K. The thermal conductivity of all the samples decreases with increasing temperature. Lattice thermal conductivity is not significantly modified as the doping content may infer negligible mass fluctuation scattering for copper/zinc and indium/tin substitution. Even though, the power factors (S-2/rho) of indium-doped samples Cu2.1Zn0.9Sn1-xInxSe4 (x = 0.05, 0.075) are almost the same, the maximum zT = 0.45 at 773K was obtained for Cu2.1Zn0.9Sn0.925In0.075Se4 due to its smaller value of thermal conductivity. Chalcogenide glasses are interesting materials for their infrared transmitting properties and photo-induced effects. This paper reports the influence of light on the optical properties of Sb10S40Se50 thin films. The amorphous nature and chemical composition of the deposited film was studied by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The optical constants, i.e., refractive index, extinction coefficient, and optical band gap as well as film thickness are determined from the measured transmission spectra using the Swanepoel method. The dispersion of the refractive index is discussed in terms of the single-oscillator Wemple-DiDomenico model. The dispersion energy parameter was found to be less for the laser-irradiated film, which indicates the laser-irradiated film is more microstructurally disordered as compared to the as-prepared film. It is observed that laser-irradiation of the films leads to decrease in optical band gap (photo-darkening) while increase in refractive index. The decrease in the optical band gap is explained on the basis of change in nature of films due to chemical disorderness and the increase in refractive index may be due to the densification of films with improved grain structure because of microstructural disorderness in the films. The optical changes are supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. (C) 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Detailed investigation of the chemical states and local atomic environment of Ni and Zn in the two-phase composites of Zn1-xNixO/NiO was reported. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of both Ni-2p and Zn-2p revealed the existence of a doublet with spin-orbit splitting approximate to 17.9 and 23.2eV, respectively confirming the divalent oxidation state of both Ni and Zn. However, the samples fabricated under oxygen-rich conditions exhibit significant difference in the binding energy approximate to 18.75eV between the 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 states of Ni. The shift in the satellite peaks of Ni-2p with increasing the Ni composition x within the Zn1-xNixO/NiO matrix signifies the attenuation of nonlocal screening because of reduced site occupancy of two adjacent Zn ions. The temperature dependence of X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a large distortion in the axial-rhombohedral angle for oxygen-rich NiO. Conversely, no significant distortion was noticed in the NiO system present as a secondary phase within Zn1-xNixO. Nevertheless, the unit-cell volume of both wurtzite h.c.p. Zn1-xNixO and f.c.c. NiO exhibits an anomalous behavior between 150 and 300 degrees C. The origin of such unusual change in the unit-cell volume was discussed in terms of oxygen stoichiometry.

We report on the observation of stable p-type conductivity in B and N co-doped epitaxial ZnO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Films grown at higher oxygen partial pressure (similar to 10(-1) Torr) shows p-type conductivity with a carrier concentration of similar to 3 x 10(16) cm(-3). This p-type conductivity is associated with the significant decrease in defect emission peaks due to the vacancy oxygen (V-O) and Schottky type-I native defects compared to films grown at low oxygen partial pressure (similar to 10(-5) Torr). The p-type conductivity is explained with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculation considering off-stoichiometric BN1+x in the ZnO lattice. (C) 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We demonstrate the growth of crack-free blue and greenemitting LED structures grown on 2-inch and 6-inch Si(111) substrates by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE), using AlN nucleation layers and AlGaN buffer layers for stress management. LED device performance and its dependence on threading dislocation (TD) density and emission wavelength were studied. Despite the inherently low light extraction efficiency, an output power of 1.2 mW at 50 mA was measured from a 500 μm square planar device, emitting at 455 nm. The light output decreases dramatically as the emission wavelength increases from 455 nm to 510 nm. For LED devices emitting at similar wavelength, the light output was more than doubled when the TD density was reduced from 5×1 09 cm-2 to 2×109 cm-2. Our results clearly show that high TD density is detrimental to the overall light output, highlighting the need for further TD reduction for structures grown on Si. © 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A compact electron cyclotron wave resonance (ECWR) source has been developed for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H). The ECWR provides growth rates of up to 900 Å/min over a 4″ diameter and an independent control of the deposition rate and ion energy. The ta-C:H was deposited using acetylene as the source gas and was characterized in terms of its sp3 content, mass density, intrinsic stress, hydrogen content, C-H bonding, Raman spectra, optical gap, surface roughness and friction coefficient. The results obtained indicated that the film properties were maximized at an ion energy of approximately 167 eV, corresponding to an energy per daughter carbon ion of 76 eV. The relationship between the incident ion energy and film densification was also explained in terms of the subsurface implantation of carbon ions into the growing film.

Structural changes induced by the incorporation of nitrogen into ta-C : H films have been studied by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy and Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy. ta-C:H films have been synthesised using a low pressure Electron Cyclotron Wave Resonance (ECWR) source which provides a plasma beam with a high degree of ionisation and dissociation. Nitrogen was incorporated by adding N2 to the C2H2 plasma used for the deposition of ta-C : H films. The N/C atomic ratio in the films rises rapidly until the N2/C2H2 gas ratio reaches three, and then increases more gradually, while the deposition rate decreases steeply. Chemical sputtering of the forming films and the formation of molecular nitrogen within the films limit the maximum nitrogen content to about N/C = 0.6. For low nitrogen content the films retain their diamond-like properties, however as N/C atomic ratio increases, a polymeric-like material is formed, with >C=N- structures and terminating C=N and NH groups that decrease the connectivity of the network.

The relative Kic values of metals are calculated with a simplified dislocation model. It is found that the ratio of KIIc to KIc and the temperature dependence of fracture toughness of some metals estimated with this model are consistent with the experimental results.

An auto-focusing method based on the image brightness gradient sharpness function is presented for imaging ellipsometry system, in which the image plane of the thin-film specimen is not perpendicular to the optical axis. The clear image of a specimen with large area is obtained by moving the imaging sensor in optical axis direction and around its sensitive surface centre successively. The experimental results demonstrate its feasibility.

In order to characterize the physical and spatial properties of nano-film pattern on solid substrates, an automatic imaging spectroscopic ellipsometer (ISE) based on a polarizer - compensator - specimen - analyzer configuration in the visible region is presented. It can provide the spectroscopic ellipsometric parameters psi (x, y, lambda) and Delta (x, y, lambda) of a large area specimen with a lateral resolution in the order of some microns. A SiO2 stepped layers pattern is used to demonstrate the function of the ISE which shows potential application in thin film devices' such as high-throughput bio-chips.

Defects in as-grown U3+ : CaF2 crystals grown with or without PbF2 as an oxygen scavenger were studied using Raman spectra, thermoluminescence glow curves, and additional absorption (AA) spectra induced by heating and gamma-irradiation. The effects of heating and irradiation on as-grown U3+: CaF2 crystals are similar, accompanied by the elimination of H-type centers and production of F-type centers. U3+ is demonstrated to act as an electron donor in the CaF2 lattice, which is oxidized to the tetravalent form by thermal activation or gamma-irradiation. In the absence of PbF(2)as an oxygen scavenger, the as-grown U3+:CaF2 crystals contain many more lattice defects in terms of both quantity and type, due to the presence of O2- impurities. Some of these defects can recombine with each other in the process of heating and gamma-irradiation. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The effects of gamma irradiation on as-grown 5 at% Yb:YAlO3 (YAP) and air annealing on gamma-irradiated 5 at% Yb: YAP have been studied by the difference in the absorption spectra before and after treatment. The gamma irradiation and air annealing led to opposite changes of the absorption properties of the Yb: YAP crystal. After air annealing, the gamma-irradiation effects were totally removed over the wavelength range 390-800 nm and the concentrations of Fe3+ and Yb3+ were slightly increased. For the first time, the gamma-irradiation-induced valence changes between Yb3+ and Yb2+ ions in Yb: YAP crystals have been observed. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
