We consider the Kramers problem for a long chain polymer trapped in a biased double-well potential. Initially the polymer is in the less stable well and it can escape from this well to the other well by the motion of its N beads across the barrier to attain the configuration having lower free energy. In one dimension we simulate the crossing and show that the results are in agreement with the kink mechanism suggested earlier. In three dimensions, it has not been possible to get an analytical `kink solution' for an arbitrary potential; however, one can assume the form of the solution of the nonlinear equation as a kink solution and then find a double-well potential in three dimensions. To verify the kink mechanism, simulations of the dynamics of a discrete Rouse polymer model in a double well in three dimensions are carried out. We find that the time of crossing is proportional to the chain length, which is in agreement with the results for the kink mechanism. The shape of the kink solution is also in agreement with the analytical solution in both one and three dimensions.

The reaction of the amino spirocyclic cyclotriphosphazene N3P3(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2CH2NH) (2) with palladium chloride gives the stable chelate complex [PdCl2.2] (4). An X-ray crystallographic study reveals that one of the nitrogen atoms of the diaminoalkane moiety and an adjacent phosphazene ring nitrogen atom are bonded to the metal. An analogous reaction with the phosphazene N3P3(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2NH) (1) gives initially a similar complex which undergoes facile hydrolysis to give the novel monometallic and bimetallic complexes [PdCl2.HN3P3(O)(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2NH2)] (5) and [PdCl{N3P3(NMe2)4(NCH2CH2NH2)}]2(O) (6), which have been structurally characterized; in the former, an (oxophosphazadienyl)ethylenediamine is chelated to the metal whereas, in the latter, an oxobridged bis(cyclotriphosphazene) acts as a hexadentate nitrogen donor ligand in its dianionic form. We present an unusual temperature dependence of hysteresis in the Lion resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) signals from superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta. We observe that the hysteresis increases with increase in temperature till T-c which we interpret as evidence for the presence of Bean-Livingston surface barriers (BLSB) in the single crystalline films.

Transforming Growth Factors-beta (TGF-beta s) have been described in many vertebrate species of amphibians, aves and mammals. In this report we demonstrate the presence of TGF-beta 2 in pisces. TGF-beta 2 has been cloned from a fish, Cyrinus carpio, by RT-PCR using degenerate oligonucleotide primers. Sequence analysis of the amplified product and alignment of the deduced amino acid sequence with the human TGF-beta 2 amino acid sequence revealed 81% and 93% identity in the precursor and the mature regions, respectively. The northern blot analysis of fish heart RNA shows a major messenger RNA species of about 8.0 kb and two messages of very low abundance of about 5.0 kb and 4.0 kb. The identification of TGF-beta 2 isoform in Pisces and it's high degree of homology with the mammalian isoform suggests that among all TGF-beta isoforms, TGF-beta 2 is the most conserved during evolution. The problem and related earlier work All the above problems involve the passage of a long chain molecule, through a region in space, where the free energy per segment is higher, thus effectively presenting a barrier for the motion of the molecule. This is what we refer to as the Kramers proble...

A plasma-assisted catalytic reactor was used to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust operated under different load conditions. Initial studies were focused on plasma reactor (a dielectric barrier discharge reactor) treatment of diesel exhaust at various temperatures. The nitric oxide (NO) removal efficiency was lowered when high temperature exhaust was treated using plasma reactor. Also, NO removal efficiency decreased when 45% load exhaust was treated. Studies were then made with plasma reactor combined with a catalytic reactor consisting of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst, V2O5/TiO2. Ammonia was used as a reducing agent for SCR process in a ratio of 1:1 to NOx. The studies were focused on temperatures of the SCR catalytic reactor below 200°C. The plasma-assisted catalytic reactor was operated well to remove NOx under no-load and load conditions. For an energy input of 96 J/l, the NOx removal efficiencies obtained under no-load and load conditions were 90% and 72% respectively at an exhaust temperature of 100°C.

This paper reports improved performance of discharge plasma in filtered engine exhaust treatment. Our paper deals about the removal of NOX emissions from the diesel exhaust by electric discharge plasma. For the treatment of diesel exhaust a new type of reactor referred to as crossflow dielectric barrier discharge reactor has been used, where the gas flow is perpendicular to the corona electrode. Experiments were conducted at different flow rates ranging from 2 l/min to 10 l/min. The discharge plasma assisted barrier discharge reactor has shown promising results in NOX removal at high flow rates.

Development of barrier materials for organic device encapsulation is of key interest for the commercialization of organic electronics. In this work, we have fabricated barrier films with ultralow water vapor permeabilities by reactive layer-by-layer approach. Using this technique, alternative layers of polyethylene imine and stearic acid were covalently bonded on a Surlyn film. The roughness, transparency and thickness of the films were determined by atomic force microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Water vapor transmission rates through these films and the ability of these films to protect the organic photovoltaic devices was investigated. The films with covalently assembled bilayers exhibited lower water vapor transmission rates and maintained higher organic photovoltaic device efficiencies compared to the neat Surlyn film.

A layer-by-layer approach was used for the fabrication of multilayer films for ultra high gas barrier applications. The ultra high gas barrier material was designed by incorporating Nafion layer in between bilayers of poly(ethylene imine) and poly(acrylic acid) on a Surlyn substrate. When the barrier film with self-assembled Nafion is exposed to the moist environment, Nafion absorbs and desorbs water molecules simultaneously, thereby reducing the ingress of moisture in to the film. In order to study the effect of Nafion, the fabricated barrier materials with and without the presence of Nafion were tested for water vapor barrier properties. The barrier films were further used for encapsulating organic photovoltaic devices and were evaluated for their potential use in barrier applications. The devices encapsulated with the films containing Nafion exhibited better performance when subjected to accelerated aging conditions. Therefore, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of self-assembled Nafion in reducing the water vapor permeability by nearly five orders of magnitude and in increasing the lifetimes of organic devices by similar to 22 times under accelerated weathering conditions.

The effect of inserting ultra-thin atomic layer deposited Al2O3 dielectric layers (1 nm and 2 nm thick) on the Schottky barrier behaviour for high (Pt) and low(Al) work function metals on n- and p-doped InGaAs substrates has been investigated. Rectifying behaviour was observed for the p-type substrates (both native oxide and sulphur passivated) for both the Al/p-InGaAs and Al/Al2O3/p-InGaAs contacts. The Pt contacts directly deposited on p-InGaAs displayed evidence of limited rectification which increased with Al2O3 interlayer thickness. Ohmic contacts were formed for both metals on n-InGaAs in the absence of an Al2O3 interlayer, regardless of surface passivation. However, limited rectifying behaviour was observed for both metals on the 2 nm Al2O3/n-InGaAs samples for the sulphur passivated InGaAs surface, indicating the importance of both surface passivation and the presence of an ultra-thin dielectric interlayer on the current-voltage characteristics displayed by these devices.
