Surface roughness noise is a potentially important contributor to airframe noise. In this paper, noise assessment due to surface roughness is performed for a conceptual Silent Aircraft design SAX-40 by means of a prediction model developed in previous theoretical work and validated experimentally. Estimates of three idealized test cases show that surface roughness could produce a significant noise level above that due to the trailing edge at high frequencies. Roughness height and roughness density are the two most significant parameters influencing surface roughness noise, with roughness height having the dominant effect. The ratio of roughness height to boundary-layer thickness is the relevant non-dimensional parameter and this decreases in the streamwise direction. The candidate surface roughness is selected for SAX-40 to meet an aggressive noise target and keep surface roughness noise at a negligible level. Copyright © 2008 by Yu Liu and Ann P. Dowling.

This paper presents a practical destruction-free parameter extraction methodology for a new physics-based circuit simulator buffer-layer Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor (IGCT) model. Most key parameters needed for this model can be extracted by one simple clamped inductive-load switching experiment. To validate this extraction method, a clamped inductive load switching experiment was performed, and corresponding simulations were carried out by employing the IGCT model with parameters extracted through the presented methodology. Good agreement has been obtained between the experimental data and simulation results.

An experiment was carried out on the distribution, prevalence and intensity of infestation of protozoan and monogenean parasites of carp fingerlings in two selected areas of Bangladesh. Six hundred and forty fingerlings of seven species viz. Catla calla, Hypophthalmicthys molitrix, Labeo rohita, Ctenophalyngodon idella, Cyprinus carpio, Barbodes gonionotus and Cirrhinus cirrhosus from different nursery ponds of Shambhuganj, Mymensingh, and Santaher, Bogra were examined during this investigation. This study revealed that carp fingerlings carried a large number of protozoan and monogenean parasites. Different protozoan parasites viz Trichodina domerguei, Trichodina reticulata, Myxobolus koi, Chilodonella cyprini and monogenean parasites such as Dactylogyrus extensus, Dactylogyrus catlarius and Dactylogyroides tripathi were identified in the experimental fishes throughout the study period. It has been observed that distribution, prevalence and intensity of parasite in carp fingerlings are species and zone specific. In case of C. cirrhosus, the highest prevalence of protozoan parasite viz Trichodina domerguei were 93.75% and 75.92% in Santhahar and Shambhuganj area respectively. Irrespective of host, the most prevalent ectoparasite was Dactylogyrus extensus, followed by Myxobolus koi, Chilodonella cyprini and Dactylogyroides tripathi. Relatively higher mortality of carp fingerlings was found at younger stage. The highest prevalent parasitic species was identified as Trichodina domerguei followed by Trichodina reticulata and Dactylogyrus catlarius were found 93.75% in Cirrhinus cirrhosus, 68.75% in Cyprinus carpio and 39.44% in Hypophthalmicthys molitrix respectively.

The rule of light on the timing of maturation and spawning in tropical and subtropical regions is not clear well, because the reproductive cycle in these systems is lunar synchronized. In this study, thus, the effects of different light regimes were investigated on maturational progress of whitespotted rabbitfish, Siganus sutor, the commercial species in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. During prespawning season, 50 adult fish were randomly divided into ten 300-l tanks (n=5). The fish in control tank received indoor light condition and the fish in each other tanks were exposed to nine different combinations of photoperiod (8L: 16D, 12L: 12D, 16L: 8D) and light intensity (1000, 2000, 3000 lux). After 60 days, GSI and HSI values, serum levels of estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), 17-α hydroxyprogestrone (OHP), calcium (Ca2+) and gonad histology were evaluated for females and males. In females the GSI mean values of exposed fish increased in comparison with control except for fish were kept under 8L, 2000 lux (tank 8). These differences were significant only for fishes in tank 7 (8L, 3000 lux). In the cases of HSI, the results were converse, so that, the most of thanks showed significant decreasing than fishes reared under indoor condition. Morphology and histology study of Ovaries showed three developmental phases including 3, 4 and chiefly 5 that were parallel with GSI values. Fortheremore the serum levels of E2 was recorded between 0.54-15.8 ng/ml in different fish and their mean values were lower than control in all treatmants (P> 0.05). In males, the similar results were obtained. The GSI and HSI mean values in experimental regimes compared with control were upper and lower, respectively, except for fishes were reared in tank 1 (16L, 3000 lux). Testes histology of fishes were reared under different regimes showed signs of stage 5, since no blood vessels observed and thick milt exuded on slight pressure. The mean values of testosterone consentration in fishes were kept in tanks 1 and 6 (12L, 1000 lux) were higher and in other ones were lower than control group. It is also noted that the OHP and Ca2+ had diverse results including increasing and decreasing mean values than control. So, these factors contrary to E2 and T were not suitable to evaluation of maturity in both sexes. On the basis of ovarian structure in stage 5, oocyte development pattern in this species was group synchronous. So, increased mean of GSI versus decreased values of HSI, E2 and perhaps Ca2+ were the signs of improved maturation. But in males, reduced levels of T and similarity of testes morphology in all samples caused that GSI mean value was the only indicator for differentiating among treatments. These findings suggest that alternations were used in light regimes have been the reason of improved maturity in all treatments except fishes reared in tank 8. The ١٠٧ rule of light intensity on induction of maturity was cleared by comparision between fishes in tanks 4, 5, 6 and control group. Because day length was the same whereas fishes in tanks 4, 5 and 6 were exposed to increased light intensity compared with control. This fact verified by results was obtained from fishes in tanks 9 and especially 7, since photoperiod in this group was lower than control. So, higher intensity was considered as the reason of alternations. Contrasting with indoor condition, Induced maturity was also cleared for fishes were kept in tanks 1, 2 and 3, where both of light duration and intensity were increased. But, the rule of photoperiod was individually demonstrated when obtained results were compared with similar light intensities in other treatments. In conclusion, with comparison among different light regimes it is declared that siganids were kept under light condition of tank 2 including 16h light duration combined with 2000 lux intensity showed the best signs of sexual maturation in both sexes. On the basis of this study, setting up the spring light condition during prespawning season induces maturation in withspotted rabbitfish. This improvement not only by influence of photoperiod or light intensity, separately, but obtained through interaction between them. Thus, determination of threshold and resistance to light be recommended before exposure, although using proper regime during suitable time are necessary to achieve purposes considerably.

7.5Gb/s real-time end-to-end optical OFDM (OOFDM) transceivers incorporating variable power loading on each individual subcarrier are demonstrated experimentally, for the first time, using a live-optimized RSOA intensity modulator having a modulation bandwidth as narrow as 1GHz. Colourless real-time 16-QAM-encoded OOFDM signal transmission at 7.5Gb/s over 25km SSMF is achieved across the C-band in simple IMDD systems without in-line optical amplification and dispersion compensation. End-to-end real-time experimental demonstrations are reported, for the first time, of aggregated 11.25Gb/s over 26.4km standard SMF, optical orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OOFDMA) PONs with adaptive dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA). The demonstrated intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IMDD) OOFDMA PON system consists of two optical network units (ONUs), each of which employs a DFB-based directly modulated laser (DML) or a VCSEL-based DML for modulating upstream signals. Extensive experimental explorations of dynamic OOFDMA PON system properties are undertaken utilizing identified optimum DML operating conditions. It is shown that, for simultaneously achieving acceptable BERs for all upstream signals, the OOFDMA PON system has a >3dB dynamic ONU launch power variation range, and the BER performance of the system is insusceptible to any upstream symbol offsets slightly smaller than the adopted cyclic prefix. In addition, experimental results also indicate that, in addition to maximizing the aggregated system transmission capacity, adaptive DBA can also effectively reduce imperfections in transmission channel properties without affecting signal bit rates offered to individual ONUs.

The observation of von Kármán type vortices during the impact of water droplets onto a pool of water is reported. Shadowgraph imaging and laser-sheet visualization are used to document these events. The appearance of these vortices occurs within theoretically predicted regions in a Reynolds-splash number parameter space. In addition, and also in agreement with theoretical predictions, smooth splashing, with vortices absent, is found for smaller Reynolds number. © 2012 American Physical Society.

This work presents an experimental and numerical investigation to characterise the fracture properties of pure bitumen (the binder in asphalt paving materials). The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an experimental study of fracture characterisation parameters of pure bitumen as determined by three-point bend tests. The second part deals with modelling of fracture and failure of bitumen by Finite Element analysis. Fracture mechanics parameters, stress intensity factor, KIC, fracture energy, GIC, and J-integral, JIC, are used for evaluation of bitumen's fracture properties. The material constitutive model developed by Ossa et al. [40,41] which was implemented into a FE code by Costanzi [18] is combined with cohesive zone models (CZM) to simulate the fracture behaviour of pure bitumen. Experimental and numerical results are presented in the form of failure mechanism maps where ductile, brittle and brittle-ductile transition regimes of fracture behaviour are classified. The FE predictions of fracture behaviour match well with experimental results. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Vibration and acoustic analysis at higher frequencies faces two challenges: computing the response without using an excessive number of degrees of freedom, and quantifying its uncertainty due to small spatial variations in geometry, material properties and boundary conditions. Efficient models make use of the observation that when the response of a decoupled vibro-acoustic subsystem is sufficiently sensitive to uncertainty in such spatial variations, the local statistics of its natural frequencies and mode shapes saturate to universal probability distributions. This holds irrespective of the causes that underly these spatial variations and thus leads to a nonparametric description of uncertainty. This work deals with the identification of uncertain parameters in such models by using experimental data. One of the difficulties is that both experimental errors and modeling errors, due to the nonparametric uncertainty that is inherent to the model type, are present. This is tackled by employing a Bayesian inference strategy. The prior probability distribution of the uncertain parameters is constructed using the maximum entropy principle. The likelihood function that is subsequently computed takes the experimental information, the experimental errors and the modeling errors into account. The posterior probability distribution, which is computed with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, provides a full uncertainty quantification of the identified parameters, and indicates how well their uncertainty is reduced, with respect to the prior information, by the experimental data. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

The influence of well thickness on the electroluminescence (EL) of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition is investigated. It is found that the peak wavelength of EL increases with the increase of well thickness when the latter is located in the range of 3.0-5.1 nm. The redshift is mainly attributed to the quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE). As a contrast, it is found that the EL intensity of InGaN/GaN MQWs increases with the increase of well thickness in spite of QCSE. The result of X-ray diffraction demonstrates that the interface become smoother with the increase of well thickness and suggests that the reduced interface roughness can be an important factor leading to the increase of EL intensity of InGaN/GaN MQWs. InGaN/GaN multi-quantum-well blue (461 +/- 4 nm) light emitting diodes with higher electroluminescence intensity are obtained by postgrowth thermal annealing at 720 C in O-2-ambient. Based on our first-principle total-energy calculations, we conclude that besides dissociating the Mg-H complex by forming H2O, annealing in O-2 has another positive effect on the activation of acceptor Mg in GaN. Mg can be further activated by the formation of an impurity band above the valence band maximum of host GaN from the passivated Mg-Ga-O-N complex. Our calculated ionization energy for acceptor Mg in the passivated system is about 30 meV shallower than that in pure GaN, in good agreement with previous experimental measurement. Our model can explain that the enhanced electroluminescence intensity of InGaN/GaN MQWs based on Mg-doped p-type GaN is due to a decrease in the ionization energy of Mg acceptor with the presence of oxygen. A multiple-slot waveguide is presented and demonstrated through theoretical simulation. Taking a double-slot waveguide as an example, the results show a nearly 30% enhancement of optical intensity compared with the traditional single-slot waveguide with the same slot gap width. Therefore, the E-field intensity of the slot can be increased by adding another smaller slot. A double-slot waveguide with oxide and air as low index slot materials is realized experimentally and the formation processes of the slots are analyzed.

Erbium was implanted with energies 200 or 400 keV into epitaxial (0 0 0 1) GaN grown on (0 0 0 1) Al2O3 substrate at room temperature (RT) and 400degreesC. Both random (10degrees tilt from c-axis) and channeled (along c-axis) implantations were studied. RBS/Channeling technique was used to study the dependences of the radiation damage with ion implantation energy, direction and temperature. It was found that the channeling implantation or elevating temperature implantation both resulted in the decrease of the damage. Moreover, the Photoluminscence (PL) properties of Er-implanted GaN thin filius were also studied. The experimental results indicate that the PL intensity can be enhanced by raising implantation energy or implanting along channeling direction. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
