The present study which is the first of its kind in this region is an attempt to generate adequate information on the relative abundances, the seasonal and spatial variations as well as on the source and fate of organic compounds found associated with the dissolved, particulate and sedimentary compartments of Chalakudy river system. The study aimed at investigating variations, the relative proportion of dissolved, particulate and sedimentary fractions of these materials as well as the pollution extent so as to be able to comment on the present condition of this river-estuarine system. This thesis focuses attention on the role of biogeoorganics in modifying the ecological and environmental condition of the dissolved, particuIate and sediment compartments with their minute variability subjected to various physical, chemical and biogeochemical processes. A scheme of study encompassing all these objectives provides the frame work for the present investigation.

Heterotrophic bacterial and phytoplankton biomass, production, specific growth rates, and growth efficiencies were studied in the Northern region of the Cananeia-Iguape estuarine system, which has recently experienced an intense eutrophication due to anthropogenic causes. Two surveys were carried out during spring and neap tide periods of the dry season of 2005 and the rainy season of 2006. This region receives large freshwater inputs with organic seston and phosphate concentrations that reach as high as 1.0 mg l(-1) and 20.0 mu M, respectively. Strong decreasing gradients of seston and dissolved inorganic nutrients were observed from the river/estuary boundary to the estuary/coastal interface. Gradients were also observed in phytoplankton and bacterial production rates. The production rates of phytoplankton were 5.6-fold higher (mean 8.5 mu g Cl(-1) h(-1)) during the dry season. Primary production rates (PP) positively correlated with salinity and euphoric depth, indicating that phytoplankton productivity was light-limited. On the other hand, bacterial biomass (BB) and production rates (BP) were 1.9- and 3.7-fold higher, respectively, during the rainy season, with mean values of up to 40.4 mu g Cl(-1) and 7.9 mu g Cl(-1) h-1, respectively. Despite such a high BP, bacterial abundance remained <2 x 106 cells ml(-1), indicating that bacterial production and removal were coupled. Mean specific growth rates ranged between 0.9 and 5.5 d(-1). BP was inversely correlated with salinity and positively correlated with temperature, organic matter, exopolymer particles, and particulate-attached bacteria; this last accounted for as much as 89.6% of the total abundance. During the rainy season, BP was generally much higher than PP, and values of BP/PP > 20 were registered during high freshwater input, suggesting that under these conditions, bacterial activity was predominantly supported by allochthonous inputs of organic carbon. In addition, BB probably represented the main pathway for the synthesis of high-quality (low C:N) biomass that may have been available to the heterotrophic components of the plankton food web, particularly nanoheterotrophs. Organic matter amendments are applied to contaminated soil to provide a better habitat for re-vegetation and remediation, and olive mill waste compost (OMWC) has been described as a promising material for this aim. We report here the results of an incubation experiment carried out in flooded conditions to study its influence in As and metal solubility in a trace elements contaminated soil. NPK fertilisation and especially organic amendment application resulted in increased As, Se and Cu concentrations in pore water. Independent of the amendment, dimethylarsenic acid (DMA) was the most abundant As species in solution. The application of OMWC increased pore water dissolved organic-carbon (DOC) concentrations, which may explain the observed mobilisation of As, Cu and Se; phosphate added in NPK could also be in part responsible of the mobilisation caused in As. Therefore, the application of soil amendments in mine soils may be particularly problematic in flooded systems.

Marine-derived amorphous organic matter dominates hemipelagic and trench sediments in and around the Middle America Trench. These sediments contain, on the average, 1% to 2% total organic carbon (TOC), with a maximum of 4.8%. Their organic facies and richness reflect (1) the small land area of Guatemala, which contributes small amounts of higher land plant remains, and (2) high levels of marine productivity and regionally low levels of dissolved oxygen, which encourage deposition and preservation of marine organic remains. These sediments have good potential for oil but are now immature. For this reason, gaseous hydrocarbons like the ethane identified in the deep parts of the section, as at Sites 496 and 497, are probably migrating from a mature section at depth. The pelagic sediments of the downgoing Cocos Plate are lean in organic carbon and have no petroleum potential

The isotopic characteristics of CH4 (d13C values range from -101.3 per mil to -61.1 per mil PDB, and dD values range from -256 per mil to -136 per mil SMOW) collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 indicate that the CH4 was produced by microbial CO2 reduction and that there is not a significant contribution of thermogenic CH4 to the sampled sediment gas from the Blake Ridge. The isotopic values of CO2 (d13C range -20.6 per mil to +1.24 per mil PDB) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC; d13C range -37.7 per mil to +10.8 per mil PDB) have parallel profiles with depth, but with an offset of 12.5 per mil. Distinct downhole variations in the carbon isotopic composition of CH4 and CO2 cannot be explained by closed-system fractionation where the CO2 is solely derived from the locally available sedimentary organic matter (d13C -2.0 per mil ± 1.4 per mil PDB) and the CH4 is derived from CO2 reduction. The observed isotopic profiles reflect the combined effects of upwards gas migration and decreased microbial activity with depth.

This research has been carried out in the Nha Trang Bay (Southern Vietnam, South China Sea) at a section from the estuary of the Cai River to the marine part of the bay, as well as in the area of coral reefs. River- and sea waters, suspended matter, and bottom sediments are studies. Data on dissolved organic carbon and total nitrogen in water are obtained. Organic carbon concentration is estimated in suspended matter; organic carbon and molecular and group compositions of n-alkanes are determined in bottom sediments. Molecular and group compositions of n-alkanes in bottom sediments of the landfill made it possible to identify three types of organic matter (OM): marine, mixed, and mainly of terrigenous origin. All these types of OM are closely related to specificity of sedimentation and hydrodynamics of waters in this area.

Sediments of the Barbados Ridge complex, cored on DSDP Leg 78A, contain low concentrations of acid-insoluble carbon (0.05-0.25%) and nitrogen (C/N 1.5-5) and dispersed C1-C6 hydrocarbons (100-800 ppb). The concentrations of organic carbon and 13C in organic carbon decrease with depth, whereas the concentration of dispersed hydrocarbons increases slightly with depth. These trends may reflect the slow oxidation of organic matter, with selective removal of 13C and slow conversion of the residual organic matter to hydrocarbons. Very minor indications of nitrogen gas were observed at about 250 meters sub-bottom at two of the drilling sites. Basement basalts have calcite veins with d13C values in the range of 2.0 to 3.2 per mil and d18O-SMOW values ranging from 28.5 to +30.6 per mil. Interstitial waters have d18O-SMOW of 0.2 to -3.5 per mil and dD-SMOW of -2 to -15 per mil. The oxygen isotopic composition of the calcite veins in the basement basalts gives estimated equilibrium fractionation temperatures in the range of 11 to 24°C, assuming precipitation from water with d18O-SMOW in the range of +0.1 to -1.0 per mil. This suggests that basalt alteration and precipitation of vein calcite occurred in contact either with warmer Campanian seawater or, later, with pore water, after burial to depths of 200- 300 meters. Pore waters from all three sites are depleted in deuterium and 18O, and dissolved sulfate is enriched in 34S at Sites 541 and 542, but not at Site 543.

Data are presented on concentration of dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen in sea water at four stations, and also of dissolved and particulate amino acids at a deep-sea station above the Japan Trench. Concentration of Corg ranged from 0.79 to 2.00 mg/l, reaching maximum in the upper productive layers, while that of particulate Norg varied from 0.0018 to 0.037 mg/l, the maximum being in the upper layer (0-100 m). Water and particulate matter contained 18 amino acids in concentrations varying from 0.150 to 0.177 mg/l in the former and from 0.010 to 0.048 mg/l in the latter. Amino acid composition is variable. Vertical distribution of dissolved Corg and particulate Norg, as well as of dissolved and particulate amino acids is greatly dependent on water dynamics.
