A crosslinking strategy was used to improve the thermal and mechanical performance of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC): PPC bearing a small moiety of pendant C=C groups was synthesized by the terpolymerization of allyl glycidyl ether (AGE), propylene oxide (PO), and carbon dioxide (CO2). Almost no yield loss was found in comparison with that of the PO and CO2 copolymer when the concentration of AGE units in the terpolymer was less than 5 mol %. Once subjected to UV-radiation crosslinking, the crosslinked PPC film showed an elastic modulus 1 order of magnitude higher than that of the uncrosslinked one. Moreover, crosslinked PPC showed hot-set elongation at 65 degrees C of 17.2% and permanent deformation approaching 0, whereas they were 35.3 and 17.2% for uncrosslinked PPC, respectively. Therefore, the PPC application window was enlarged to a higher temperature zone by the crosslinking strategy.

In this study, we describe composite scaffolds composed of synthetic and natural materials with physicochemical properties suitable for tissue engineering applications. Fibrous scaffolds were co-electrospun from a blend of a synthetic biodegradable polymer (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), PLGA, 10% solution) and two natural proteins, gelatin (denatured collagen, 8% solution) and (x-elastin (20% solution) at ratios of 3:1:2 and 2:2:2 (v/v/v). The resulting PLGA-gelatin-elastin (PGE) fibers were homogeneous in appearance with an average diameter of 380 80 mn, which was considerably smaller than fibers made under identical conditions from the starting materials (PLGA, 780 +/- 200 nm; gelatin, 447 +/- 1.23 nm; elastin, 1060 170 nm). Upon hydration, PGE fibers swelled to an average fiber diameter of 963 +/- 132 nm, but did not disintegrate. Importantly, PGE scaffolds were stable in an aqueous environment without crosslinking, and were more elastic than those made of pure elastin fibers. To investigate the cytocompatibility of PGE, we cultured H9c2 rat cardiac myoblasts and rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on fibrous PGE scaffolds. We found that myoblasts grew equally as well or slightly better on the scaffolds than on tissue-culture plastic. Microscopic evaluation confirmed that myoblasts reached confluence on the scaffold surfaces while simultaneously growing into the scaffolds.

Poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (EPR) was functionalized to varying degrees with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by melt grafting processes. The EPR-graft-GMA elastomers were used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT). Results showed that the grafting degree strongly influenced the morphology and mechanical properties of PBT/EPR-graft-GMA blends. Compatibilization reactions between the carboxyl and/or hydroxyl of PBT and epoxy groups of EPR-graft-GMA induced smaller dispersed phase sizes and uniform dispersed phase distributions. However, higher degrees of grafting (>1.3) and dispersed phase contents (>10 wt%) led to higher viscosities and severe crosslinking reactions in PBT/EPR-graft-GMA blends, resulting in larger dispersed domains of PBT blends. Consistent with the change in morphology, the impact strength of the PBT blends increased with the increase in EPR-graft-GMA degrees of grafting for the same dispersion phase content when the degree of grafting was below 1.8. However, PBT/EPR-graft-GMA1.8 displayed much lower impact strength in the ductile region than a comparable PBT/EPR-graft-GMA1.3 blend (1.3 indicates degree of grafting).

Poly(vinyl alcohol) /poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)/chitosan hydrogels were prepared by a low-temperature treatment and subsequent Co-60 -gamma-ray irradiation and then were medicated with ciprofloxacin lactate (an antibiotic) and chitosan oligomer (molecular weight = 3000 g/mol). The gel content, swelling ratio, tensile strength, and crystallinity of the hydrogels were determined. The effects of the chitosan molecular weight, the low-temperature treatment procedure, and the radiation dosage on the hydrogel properties were examined. The molecular weight of chitosan was lowered by the irradiation, but its basic polysaccharide structure was not destroyed. Repeating the low-temperature treatment and gamma-ray irradiation caused effective physical crosslinking and chemical crosslinking, respectively, and contributed to the mechanical strength of the final hydrogels. The incorporation of PVP and chitosan resulted in a significant improvement in the equilibrium swelling ratio. and elongation ratio of the prepared hydrogels. The ciprofloxacin lactate and chitosan oligomer were soaked into the hydrogels. Their in vitro release behaviors were examined, and they were found to follow diffusion-controlled kinetics.

Alignment films prepared from low molar mass photo-crosslinkable materials containing the cinnamate group can be used for aligning LCs after irradiating the films with linearly polarized UV light. The high contrast observed in the polarizing optical microscope between dark and bright images indicates that the alignment is quite uniform. As the photoreaction progresses. the average roughness of the films is increased. All the aggregate structures, 'lamellar crystals'. produced by the photo-crosslinking reaction are of a square shape.

Radiation effects on polyimide blends' were studied at different irradiation temperatures and with different irradiation doses. The irradiation polyimides were the blends of linear polyimide (HQDPA/ODA) and 4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride end-capped oligomer polyimide. The tensile strength and the elongation at break of irradiated films were determined as the function of irradiation temperature and dose. Under proper conditions crosslinking reaction occurred when the polyimide blends were irradiated at high temperature. The mechanical properties of irradiated polyimide blends were found to be different from the linear polyimide.

Full Paper: A study has been made on the annealing of nylon-1010 under high pressures. Heat treatment of melt-crystallized nylon-1010 was performed at 250degreesC for 30 min in the pressure range 0.7 similar to 2.5 GPa. It was found that the triclinic crystals of virgin nylon-1010 were retained at pressures less than 1.0 GPa or larger than 1.2 GPa. The X-ray diffraction intensity of (100) planes decreased with increasing pressure. The diffraction peaks shifted slightly to higher angles (2theta) relative to the virgin nylon-1010, indicating dense packing of polymer chains at high pressures. The highest melting temperature was 208degreesC for the sample annealed at 1.5 GPa. No extended-chain crystals were formed under the experimental conditions. Crosslinking occurred in the pressure range 1.0 similar to 1.2 GPa. The structure of the crosslinked samples was characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is concluded that a mechanism of crosslinking via carbodiimide can explain the nature of crosslinking of nylon-1010 annealed at high pressures. The remarkable changes of the structure of annealed nylon-1010 are also discussed in this article.

Communication: Conducting semi-interpenetrating network composites with low conductivity percolation threshold were synthesized from waterborne conducting polyaniline (cPAn) and melamine-urea resin, A perfect network of cPAn in the composite was observed by means of TEM (see Figure). The conductivity stability of cPAn in water was improved by confining the chain mobility of cPAn via in-situ crosslinking of melamine-urea resin. Cyclic voltammetry of the composites reveals electrochemical activities and reversibilities similarly to those of pure cPAn.

The effects of thermally crosslinkable polymerization of monomer reactant-polyimide (POI) on the miscibility, morphology, and crystallization of partially miscible poly(ether sulfone) (PES)/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The addition of POI led to a significant reduction in the size of PPS particles, and the interfacial tension between PPS and crosslinked POI was smaller than that between PES and crosslinked POI. During melt blending, crosslinking and grafting reactions of POI with PES and PPS homopolymers were detected; however, the reaction activity of POI with PPS was much higher than that with PES. The crosslinking and grafting reactions were developed further when blends were annealed at higher temperatures. Moreover, POI was an effective nucleation agent of the crystallization of PPS, but crosslinking and grafting hindered the crystallization of PPS. The final effect of POI on the crystallinity of the PPS phase was determined by competition between the two contradictory factors. The crosslinking and grafting reactions between the two components was controlled by the dosage of POI in the blends, the premixing sequence of POI with the two components, the annealing time, and the temperature.

We reported on the multilayer architecture containing diazo-resins (DAR) as polycations and polyaniline poly(aniline-co-N-propanesulfonic acid aniline) (PAPSAH) as polyanions held together by electrostatic interaction. Upon UV irradiation, the adjacent interfaces of the multilayer reacted to form a covalently crosslinking structure which greatly improved the stability of the films as confirmed by solvent etching experiments. These changes were confirmed by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. The thickness of the covalently attached films were characterized with small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) and a value of 30.0 Angstrom per bilayer was obtained. This type of film was further characterized by cyclic voltammetry which showed that the electroactive property of PAPSAH was still kept in the films after photoreaction. The paper studies the morphology and mechanical properties of immiscible binary blends of the nylon 1010 and HIPS through the radiation crosslinking method. In this blend, the HIPS particles were the dispersed phases in the nylon 1010 matrix. With increasing of dose, the elastic modulus increased, However, the tensile strength. elongation at bleak and the energy of fracture increased to a maximum at a dose of 0.34 MGy, then reduced with the increasing of dose. SEM photographs show that the hole sizes are not changed obviously at low dose and at high dose, remnants that cannot be dissolved in formic acid and THF can be observed in the holes and on the surface. TEM photographs showed that radiation destroys the rubber phases in the polymer blend. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aimed at saving the radiation dose required to crosslinking the polyamid-1010, BMI/PA1010 systems containing different amounts of difunctional crosslinking agent N,N'-bis-maleimide-4,4'-biphenyl methane (BMI) were prepared and the structure changes at the crystallographic and supermolecular levels before and after irradiation were studied by using WAXD, SAXS, and DSC techniques. It was found that by incorporation of BMI the microcrystal size L-100 is lowered due to the formation of hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen of BMI and the amide hydrogen of PA1010 in the hydrogen bonded plane, and the overall crystallinity W-c is also decreased. The presence of BMI causes the crystal lamella thickness d(c) to decrease and greatly thickens the transition zone d(tr) between the crystalline and amorphous regions. As for the irradiated specimen, the maximum increments in the L-100 and W-c against dose curves decrease with BMI content, and the interception point D-i, at which the L-100 and W-c curves intercept their respective horizontal line of L-100/L-100(0) and W-c/W-c(0)=1, shift to lower dose with an increase in BMI concentration. In addition. the mechanism of the radiation chemical reactions in the three different phases under the action of BMI are discussed with special focus on the interface region. A series of copolyimides were prepared from 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamines (3MPDA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Modification of the copolyimides by ultraviolet irradiation were carried out. Gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2, and N-2 through the copolyimides and photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees C. The relationships between gas permeabilities and temperature are in agreement with the Arrhenius equation. The structure of photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and gel measurement methods. Linear relationships between both log P and E-p and the volume fraction of PMDA-3MPDA exist. Photochemically crosslinking modification result in a decrease in gas permeability and an increase in E-p and alpha(H-2/N-2) for all the copolyimides. For H-2/N-2 separation, photochemically crosslinked copolyimides are of higher gas permeabilities and permselectivities simultaneously than normal polyimides. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Crosslinkable side-chain liquid crystalline polyesters PCn from N-[n-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy)alkyl]diethanolamine (Cn, n = 3, 5, 6, 10) as mesogenic monomers and maleic anhydride were synthesized and characterized. The thermal properties of PCn's were studied by means of DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and the results showed that all the polymers studied exhibit enantiotropic liquid crystallinity. In the molar mass independent region, the relatively high content of cis -CH=CH- groups in the polymer backbone of PC3 causes an increase of the melting temperature (T-m) and a decrease of T-g and isotropisation temperature (T-i). The crosslinking of PCn in the radical polymerization with styrene was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The absorption band at 1300 cm(-1) attributed to the in-plane C-H-bending vibration of trans -CH=CH- in the polymer backbone disappeared after crosslinking, indicating that the trans -CH=CH- functions are consumed in the crosslinking polymerization of styrene.
