A Raman scattering study on multiple phase generation in silicon submitted to successive Vickers microindentation cycles, in different crystallographic orientations, was performed. The microindentations were perfon-ned in a virgin single crystal (100)-oriented surface, in the [001] and [011] directions. The results indicated that the formation of multiple phases by cyclic microindentation may depend on the crystallographic direction and number of successive cycles: the onset of several different structural phases was detected after the third cycle for the [001] direction and only after 15 cycles for the [011] direction, indicating that there is a crystallographic orientation dependence for multiple phase generation. This study proposes a new PSOS-model based damage identification procedure using frequency domain data. The formulation of the objective function for the minimization problem is based on the Frequency Response Functions (FRFs) of the system. A novel strategy for the control of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) parameters based on the Nelder-Mead algorithm (Simplex method) is presented; consequently, the convergence of the PSOS becomes independent of the heuristic constants and its stability and confidence are enhanced. The formulated hybrid method performs better in different benchmark functions than the Simulated Annealing (SA) and the basic PSO (PSO(b)). Two damage identification problems, taking into consideration the effects of noisy and incomplete data, were studied: first, a 10-bar truss and second, a cracked free-free beam, both modeled with finite elements. In these cases, the damage location and extent were successfully determined. Finally, a non-linear oscillator (Duffing oscillator) was identified by PSOS providing good results. This paper presents an improved constitutive equation of frame in the context of continuous medium technique. This improved constitutive equation, which is a consistent formulation of column global bending, is applicable to a complete class of frameworks including the ideal shear frame panel, for which the beams are assumed to be rigid, and the associated column system, for which the rigidity of beams is negligible. Global buckling and second-order effects of the frame structure are discussed. The main results can be extended to other types of lateral stiffening elements as built-up columns. A worked example is presented in order to compare the main results with those obtained by the classic matrix method. Copyright (C) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This work presents a comparative analysis about the behaviour of pile caps supported by 3 piles subjected to axial loading. Piles with 20 cm and 30 cm diameters were analysed. The main reinforcement was maintained in all the specimens, however, the arrangement of the secondary reinforcement varied. The main reinforcement consisted of steel bars connecting the piles. The secondary reinforcement was made up of: (a) bars going through the piles and through the projection of the column, (b) bars forming a network, and (c) vertical and horizontal stirrups. The main objective was the observation of the pile cap behaviour regarding the cracks and the modes of rupture. The real scale specimens were subjected to experimental tests until failure by rupture. Instruments were placed with the aim to obtain the displacement of the bases, the strains in the main and secondary reinforcement bars, in the compression struts, in the lower and upper nodal zones and in the sides of the caps. None of the caps reached failure by rupture with a load less than 1.12 times the theoretical load. The specimens ruptured due to the cracking of the compression strut and/or the yielding of the reinforcement bars in one direction.

The importance of a careful selection of rocks used in building facade cladding is highlighted. A simple and viable methodology for the structural detailing of dimension stones and the verification of the global performance is presented based on a Strap software simulation. The results obtained proved the applicability of the proposed structural dimensioning methodology which represents an excellent simple tool for dimensioning rock slabs used for building facade cladding. The Strap software satisfactorily simulated the structural conditions of the stone slabs under the studied conditions, allowing the determination of alternative slab dimensions and the verification of the cladding strength at the support.

The Learning Object (OA) is any digital resource that can be reused to support learning with specific functions and objectives. The OA specifications are commonly offered in SCORM model without considering activities in groups. This deficiency was overcome by the solution presented in this paper. This work specified OA for e-learning activities in groups based on SCORM model. This solution allows the creation of dynamic objects which include content and software resources for the collaborative learning processes. That results in a generalization of the OA definition, and in a contribution with e-learning specifications.

One of the e-learning environment goal is to attend the individual needs of students during the learning process. The adaptation of contents, activities and tools into different visualization or in a variety of content types is an important feature of this environment, bringing to the user the sensation that there are suitable workplaces to his profile in the same system. Nevertheless, it is important the investigation of student behaviour aspects, considering the context where the interaction happens, to achieve an efficient personalization process. The paper goal is to present an approach to identify the student learning profile analyzing the context of interaction. Besides this, the learning profile could be analyzed in different dimensions allows the system to deal with the different focus of the learning.

In this paper, a framework for detection of human skin in digital images is proposed. This framework is composed of a training phase and a detection phase. A skin class model is learned during the training phase by processing several training images in a hybrid and incremental fuzzy learning scheme. This scheme combines unsupervised-and supervised-learning: unsupervised, by fuzzy clustering, to obtain clusters of color groups from training images; and supervised to select groups that represent skin color. At the end of the training phase, aggregation operators are used to provide combinations of selected groups into a skin model. In the detection phase, the learned skin model is used to detect human skin in an efficient way. Experimental results show robust and accurate human skin detection performed by the proposed framework.

This paper investigates how to make improved action selection for online policy learning in robotic scenarios using reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms. Since finding control policies using any RL algorithm can be very time consuming, we propose to combine RL algorithms with heuristic functions for selecting promising actions during the learning process. With this aim, we investigate the use of heuristics for increasing the rate of convergence of RL algorithms and contribute with a new learning algorithm, Heuristically Accelerated Q-learning (HAQL), which incorporates heuristics for action selection to the Q-Learning algorithm. Experimental results on robot navigation show that the use of even very simple heuristic functions results in significant performance enhancement of the learning rate.

How does knowledge management (KM) by a government agency responsible for environmental impact assessment (EIA) potentially contribute to better environmental assessment and management practice? Staff members at government agencies in charge of the EIA process are knowledge workers who perform judgement-oriented tasks highly reliant on individual expertise, but also grounded on the agency`s knowledge accumulated over the years. Part of an agency`s knowledge can be codified and stored in an organizational memory, but is subject to decay or loss if not properly managed. The EIA agency operating in Western Australia was used as a case study. Its KM initiatives were reviewed, knowledge repositories were identified and staff surveyed to gauge the utilisation and effectiveness of such repositories in enabling them to perform EIA tasks. Key elements of KM are the preparation of substantive guidance and spatial information management. It was found that treatment of cumulative impacts on the environment is very limited and information derived from project follow-up is not properly captured and stored, thus not used to create new knowledge and to improve practice and effectiveness. Other opportunities for improving organizational learning include the use of after-action reviews. The learning about knowledge management in EIA practice gained from Western Australian experience should be of value to agencies worldwide seeking to understand where best to direct their resources for their own knowledge repositories and environmental management practice. The purpose of this article is to study the application of the holographic interferometry techniques in the structural analysis of submarine environment. These techniques are widely used today, with applications in many areas. Nevertheless, its application in submarine environments presents some challenges. The application of two techniques, electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) and digital holography, comparison of advantages and disadvantages of each of them is presented. A brief study is done on the influence of water properties and the optical effects due to suspended particles as well as possible solutions to minimize these problems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Electric arc furnace steel dust is a by-product of the steelmaking process and contains high amounts of the iron and zinc and significant amounts of lead, chromium, and cadmium. Metal recycling however, is not always economically feasible, especially due to the complex mineralogical composition of this material. In this study an application of this material is presented. Ceramics were produced with clay and variable amounts of steel dust. The bulk material was fired between 800 and 1100 degrees C. The influence of the composition and the processing temperature on the mechanical strength, linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent density and bending strength and metal leaching of the ceramic samples was investigated. A blend of clay with up to 20% dust yielded ceramics with limited metal contamination risk and may thus be used for structural ceramics production. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ni-doped SnO(2) nanoparticles prepared by a polymer precursor method have been characterized structurally and magnetically. Ni doping (up to 10 mol%) does not significantly affect the crystalline structure of SnO(2), but stabilizes smaller particles as the Ni content is increased. A notable solid solution regime up to similar to 3 mol% of Ni, and a Ni surface enrichment for the higher Ni contents are found. The room temperature ferromagnetism with saturation magnetization (MS) similar to 1.2 x 10(-3) emu g(-1) and coercive field (H(C)) similar to 40 Oe is determined for the undoped sample, which is associated with the exchange coupling of the spins of electrons trapped in oxygen vacancies, mainly located on the surface of the particles. This ferromagnetism is enhanced as the Ni content increases up to similar to 3 mol%, where the Ni ions are distributed in a solid solution. Above this Ni content, the ferromagnetism rapidly decays and a paramagnetic behavior is observed. This finding is assigned to the increasing segregation of Ni ions (likely formed by interstitials Ni ions and nearby substitutional sites) on the particle surface, which modifies the magnetic behavior by reducing the available oxygen vacancies and/or the free electrons and favoring paramagnetic behavior.

A polymer precursor method has been used to synthesize Ni-doped SnO(2) nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data analyses indicate the exclusive formation of nanosized particles with rutile-type phase (tetragonal SnO(2)) for Ni contents below 10 mol%. In this concentration range, the particle sizes decrease with increasing Ni content and a bulk solid solution limit was determined at similar to 1 mol%. Ni surface enrichment is present at concentrations higher than the solution limit. Only above 10 mol% Ni. the formation of a second NiO-related phase has been determined. Magnetization measurements suggest the occurrence of ferromagnetism for samples in the solid solution regime (below similar to 1 mol%). This ferromagnetism is associated with the exchange interaction between electron spins trapped on oxygen vacancies, and is enhanced as the amount of Ni(2+) substituting at Sn(4+) sites increases. Above the solid solution limit, ferromagnetism is destroyed by the Ni surface enrichment and the system behaves as a paramagnet. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The phenylethanoid glycoside acteoside and the iridoids ipolamiide and 4-methoxycarbonyl-7-methylcyclopenta[c]pyran (fulvoipolamiide) were isolated from the leaves of Stachytarpheta glabra. The solid state structure of fulvoipolamiide was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. The molecules of fulvoipolamiide are displayed in layers parallel to the crystallographic axis a. This molecule is planar with electron delocalization in the fused ring system and the pyran rings of adjacent layers in the solid state structure are involved in a pi-pi stacking interaction. Raman spectroscopy has also been used to characterize the most important bands present in the spectra of fulvoipolamiide and ipolamiide, and comparison made with literature allows the assignment of some key markers, specially the bands in the 1600-1700 cm(-1) range.
