Colloids of palladium nanoparticles have been prepared by the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method. The as-prepared Pd colloid consists of particles with an average diameter of 2.8 +/- 0.1 nm. Digestive ripening of the as-prepared Pd colloid, a process involving refluxing the as-prepared colloid at or near the boiling point of the solvent in the presence of a passivating agent, dodecanethiol resulted in a previously reported Pd-thiolate cluster, Pd(SC12H25)(2)](6) but did not render the expected narrowing down of the particle size distribution. Solventless thermolysis of the Pd-thiolate complex resulted in various Pd systems such as Pd(0), PdS, and Pd@PdO core-shell nanoparticles thus demonstrating its versatility. These I'd nanostructures have been characterized using high-resolution electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction methods. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The excellent metal support interaction between palladium (Pd) and titanium nitride (TiN) is exploited in designing an efficient anode material. Pd-TN, that could be useful for direct ethanol fuel cell in alkaline media. The physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of the Pd-TiN/electrolyte interface reveals an efficient oxidation of ethanol coupled with excellent stability of the catalyst under electrochemical conditions. Characterization of the interface using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in situ FITR) shows the production CO2 at low overvoltages revealing an efficient cleaving of the C-C bond. The performance comparison of Pd supported on TiN (Pd-TiN) with that supported on carbon (Pd-C) clearly demonstrates the advantages of TiN support over carbon. A positive chemical shift of Pd (3d) binding energy confirms the existence of metal support interaction between pd and TiN, which in turn helps weaken the Pd-CO synergetic bonding interaction. The remarkable ability of TiN to accumulate -OH species on its surface coupled with the strong adhesion of Pd makes TiN an active support material for electrocatalysts.

Sixteen million nucleotide sequence of genome of various organisms have been analysed to detect and study the extent of occurrence of simple repetitive sequences. Two sequence motifs (TG/CA)n and (CT/AG)n capable of adopting unusual DNA structures, left handed Z-conformation and triple-helical conformation respectively, are found to be abundant in rodent and human genomes, but almost completely absent in bacterial genome. (TG/CA)n and (CT/AG)n sequences are present mostly in the intron or 5'/3' flanking regions of the genes. The presence of such repeat motifs in genomic sequence of higher eukaryotes has been correlated with their possible functional significance in nucleosome organization, recombination and gene expression.

The free-base octabromotetraphenylporphyrin (H2OBP) has been prepared by a novel bromination reaction of (meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato)copper(II). The metal [V(IV)O, Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II), Ag(II), Pt(II)] derivatives exhibit interesting electronic spectral features and electrochemical redox properties. The electron-withdrawing bromine substituents at the pyrrole carbons in H2OBP and M(OBP) derivatives produce remarkable red shifts in the Soret (50 nm) and visible bands (100 nm) of the porphyrin. The low magnitude of protonation constants (pK3 = 2.6 and pK4 = 1.75) and the large red-shifted Soret and visible absorption bands make the octabromoporphyrin unique. The effect of electronegative bromine substituents at the peripheral positions of the porphyrin has been quantitatively analyzed by using the four-orbital approach of Gouterman. A comparison of MO parameters of MOBP derivatives with those of the meso-substituted tetraphenylporphyrin (M(TPP)) and unsubstituted porphine (M(P)) derivatives provides an explanation for the unusual spectral features. The configuration interaction matrix element of the M(OBP) derivatives is found to be the lowest among the known substituted porphyrins, indicating delocalization of ring charge caused by the increase in conjugation of p orbitals of the bromine onto the ring orbitals. The electron-transfer reactivities of the porphyrins have been dramatically altered by the peripheral bromine substituents, producing large anodic shifts in the ring and metal-centered redox potentials. The increase in anodic shift in the reduction potential of M(OBP)s relative to M(TPP)s is found to be large (550 mV) compared to the shift in the oxidation potential (300 mV). These shifts are interpreted in terms of the resonance and inductive interactions of the bromine substituents.

We report the rapid solution combustion synthesis and characterization of Ag-substituted LaMnO3 phases at relatively low temperature using oxalyl dihydrazide, as fuel. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. While the parent LaMnO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, the Ag-substituted compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry. On increasing Ag-content, unit cell volume and Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases. The Fourier transform infra red spectrum shows two absorption bands corresponding to Mn-O stretching vibration (v(s) mode) and Mn-O-Mn deformation vibration (v(b) mode) around 600 cm(-1) and 400 cm(-1) for the compositions x = 0.0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that composition-controlled metal to insulator transition, with the maximum metal to insulator being 280 K for the composition La0.75Ag0.25MnO3. Increase in magnetic moment was observed with increase in Ag-content. The maximum magnetic moment of 35 emu/g was observed for the composition La0.80Ag0.20MnO3. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Dendrite Pd with corrugated surfaces, obtained by a novel AC technique, exhibits an exceptionally high catalytic activity for the oxidation of formic acid because of the presence of a high density of surface steps. The formation of twinned dendrites leads to a predominance of exposed 111 facets with a high density of surface steps as evident from high resolution electron microscopy investigations. These surface sites provide active sites for the absorption of the formic acid molecules, thereby enhancing the reaction rate. Control experiments by varying the time of deposition reveal the formation of partially grown dendrites at shorter times indicating that the dendrites were formed by growth rather than particle attachment. Our deposition method opens up interesting possibilities to produce artisotropic nanostructures with corrugated surfaces by exploiting the perturbations involved in the growth process.

Design and synthesis of three novel 2 + 2] self-assembled molecular rectangles 1-3 via coordination driven self-assembly of predesigned Pd(II) ligands is reported. 1,8-Diethynylanthracene was assembled with trans-Pd(PEt3)(2)Cl-2 in the presence of CuCl catalyst to yield a neutral rectangle 1 via Pd-C bond formation. Complex 1 represents the first example of a neutral molecular rectangle obtained via C-Pd coordination driven self-assembly. A new Pd-2(II) organometallic building block with 180 degrees bite-angle 1,4-bistrans-(ethynyl)Pd(PEt3)(2)(NO3)] benzene (M-2) containing ethynyl functionality was synthesized in reasonable yield by employing Sonagashira coupling reaction. Self-assembly of M-2 with two organic clip-type donors (L-2-L-3) afforded 2 + 2] self-assembled molecular rectangles 2 and 3, respectively L-2 = 1,8-bis(4-pyridylethynyl) anthracene; L-3 = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl) isophthalamide]. The macrocycles 1-3 were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic techniques, and in case of 1 the structure was unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Incorporation of Pd-ethynyl bonds helped to make the assemblies p-electron rich and fluorescent in nature. Complexes 1-2 showed quenching of fluorescence intensity in solution in presence of nitroaromatics, which are the chemical signatures of many commercially available explosives.

In this paper we explore the enhancement of solubility in a mechanically driven immiscible system experimentally using a mixture of Ag and Bi powders corresponding to a composition of Ag-5.1 at.% Bi. Increase in solubility can be correlated with the combination of sizes of both Ag and Bi at the nanometric scale. It is shown that complete solid solution of Ag-5.1 at.% Bi forms when the respective sizes of :Bi and Ag exceed 13 and 8 nm respectively. We have carried out a thermodynamic analysis of the size- and strain-dependent free energy landscape and compared the results to the initial mixture of microsized particles to rationalize the evolution of Ag solid solution. The agreement indicates that the emerging driving force for the formation of solid solution is primarily due to size reduction rather than the enhanced kinetics of mass transport due to mechanical driving. The oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene is gaining considerable importance in recent years as a promising alternative for styrene production. This vapour phase reaction has been studied over Pd-NaBr/Al2O3 catalyst in the temperature range 623-793 K in a fixed bed reactor. Kinetic analysis of this reaction has been done using a recursion procedure developed in this work from first principles. The advantage of this method is the absence of any restriction on the conversion level as it uses an integrated rate equation. The rate of styrene formation was found to follow a linear relationship with concentration of ethylbenzene and shows a Langmuir type dependence on the concentration of oxygen.

Microstructural and superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films grown in situ on bare sapphire by pulsed laser deposition using YBa2Cu3O7-x targets doped with 7 and 10 wt% Ag have been studied. Ag-doped films grown at 730 degrees C on sapphire have shown very significant improvement over the undoped YBa2Cu3O7-x films grown under identical condition. A zero resistance temperature of 90 K and a critical current density of 1.2 x 10(6) A/cm(2) at 77 K have been achieved on bare sapphire for the first time. Improved connectivity among grains and reduced reaction rate between the substrate and the film caused due to Ag in the film are suggested to be responsible for this greatly improved transport properties.

The degradation of the dye, Orange G, was carried out in the presence of H2O2 and Pd-substituted/impregnated CeO2. The effects of pH, initial dye concentration, initial H2O2 concentration, temperature, catalyst loading, and Pd content in the catalyst on the degradation of the dye were investigated. Eight to twelve percent degradation of the dye was obtained in 1 h when the reaction was carried out in the presence of CeO2 or H2O2 or Pd-substituted/impregnated CeO2 while 17% and 97% degradation was obtained when H2O2 was used with Pd-impregnated CeO2 and Pd-substituted CeO2, respectively. This difference clearly indicated that the ionic substitution of Pd played a key role in the degradation of the dye. A mechanism for the reaction was proposed based upon the catalyst structure and the electron transfer processes that take place in the metal ion substituted system in a reducible oxide. The reaction was found to follow first order kinetics and the influence of all the parameters on the degradation kinetics was compared using the rate constants. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy (BIS) along with ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS and XPS) has been employed to investigate the electron states of Pd and Ag deposited on amorphous graphite at different coverages. The metal core level binding energies increase with decreasing cluster size while the UPS valence bands show a decrease in the 4d states at E(F) accompanied by a shift in the intensity maximum to higher binding energies. BIS measurements show the emergence of new states closer to E(F) with increase in the cluster size. It is pointed out that the observed spectral shifts cannot be accounted for by final-state effects alone and that initial-state effects have a significant role. It therefore appears that a decrease in cluster size is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition.

High?quality Ag?doped YBa2Cu3O7?? thin films have been grown by laser ablation on R?plane ?1102? sapphire without any buffer layer. Thin films have been found to be highly c?axis oriented with Tc=90 K, transition width ?T?1 K, and transport Jc=1.2×106 A?cm?2 at 77 K in self?field conditions. The microwave surface resistance of these films measured on patterned microstrip resonators has been found to be 530 ?? at 10 GHz at 77 K which is the lowest reported on unbuffered sapphire. Improved in?plane epitaxy and reduced reaction rate between the substrate and the film caused due to Ag in the film are believed to be responsible for this greatly improved microwave surface resistance. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
