Three new solution processable quinoxaline based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type molecules have been synthesized for application in field effect transistors. These molecules were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and cyclic voltammetry. DFT calculation gives deeper insight into the electronic structure of these molecules. The crystallinity and morphology features of thin film were investigated using X-ray diffraction. These molecules show liquid crystalline phase confirmed by DSC and optical polarizing microscopy. Investigation of their field effect transistor performance indicated that these molecules exhibited p-type mobility up to 9.7 x 10 (4) cm(2) V (1) s (1) and on/off ratio of 10(4). In this study, thin films of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) have been grown by the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique on stainless steel substrate at two preferred temperatures (450 degrees C and 500 degrees C), using cobalt acetylacetonate dihydrate as precursor. Spherical as well as columnar microstructures of Co3O4 have been observed under controlled growth conditions. Further investigations reveal these films are phase-pure, well crystallized and carbon-free. High-resolution TEM analysis confirms that each columnar structure is a continuous stack of minute crystals. Comparative study between these Co3O4 films grown at 450 degrees C and 500 degrees C has been carried out for their application as negative electrodes in Li-ion batteries. Our method of electrode fabrication leads to a coating of active material directly on current collector without any use of external additives. A high specific capacity of 1168 micro Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) has been measured reproducibly for the film deposited at 500 degrees C with columnar morphology. Further, high rate capability is observed when cycled at different current densities. The Co3O4 electrode with columnar structure has a specific capacity 38% higher than the electrode with spherical microstructure (grown at 450 degrees C). Impedance measurements on the Co3O4 electrode grown at 500 degrees C also carried out to study the kinetics of the electrode process. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Non-polar (1 (1) over bar 00)m-plane ZnO thin film has been prepared on gamma-LiAlO2 (100)substrate via the low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Obvious intensity variation of the E-2 mode in the polarized Raman spectra and the absorption edge shift in the polarized optical transmission spectra indicate that the m-plane film exhibits optical anisotropy, which have applications in certain optical devices, such as the UV modulator and polarization-dependent beam switch. From the atomic force microscopy images, highly-oriented uniform-sized grains of rectangular shape were observed. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this Letter, we use a reconfigurable hologram to dynamically control the position of incidence of the pump beam onto a liquid-crystal dye-based laser. The results show that there is an increase in the stability of the laser output with time and the average power when compared with the output of the same laser when it is optically excited using a static pump beam. This technique also provides additional functionality, such as wavelength tuning and spatial shaping of the pump beam, both of which are demonstrated here. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

Stable transparent titania thin films were fabricated at room temperature by combining thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA)-modified titanium precursors with amphiphilic triblock poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO, P123) copolymers. The obtained transparent titania thin films were systematically investigated by IR spectroscopy, PL emission and excitation spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. IR spectroscopy indicates that TTFA coordinates the titanium center during the process of hydrolysis and condensation. Luminescence spectroscopy confirms the in-situ formation of lanthanide complexes in the transparent titania thin film.

The para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) monolayer film induces weak epitaxy growth (WEG) of disk-like organic semiconductors, and their charge mobilities are increased dramatically to the level of the corresponding single crystals [Wang et al., Adv. Mater. 2007, 19, 2168]. The growth behavior and morphology of p-6P monolayer film play decisive roles on WEG. Here, we investigated the growth behavior of p-6P submonolayer film as a function of the substrate temperature. Its growth exhibited two different mechanisms at high and low substrate temperature.

The fabrication of organic semiconductor thin films is extremely important in organic electronic devices. This tutorial review-which should particularly appeal to chemists and physicists interested in organic thin-film growth, organic electronic devices and organic semiconductor materials-summarizes the method of weak epitaxy growth (WEG) and its application in the fabrication of high quality organic semiconductor thin films.

The authors investigated the switch-on transient properties of p-type vanadium phthalocyanine (VOPc) transistors, which were fabricated by weak epitaxy growth on ordered para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) layer. The overshoot phenomenon of drain current had been observed in the VOPc/p-6P transistors, which was explained by the filling of carriers in traps of organic films. The small overshoot value of about 35% and transient duration time of 2 ms demonstrated the low trap concentration in organic films, which were comparable to the reported hydrogenated amorphous-silicon thin-film transistors. Therefore, the VOPc/p-6P transistors can be applied in active matrix liquid crystal display as switch elements.

Hole mobility in a copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc)-based top-contact transistor has been studied with various organic layer thicknesses. It is found that the transistor performance depends on the thickness of the CuPc layer, and the mobility increases with the increase in the CuPc layer and saturated at the thickness of 6 ML. The upper layers do not actively contribute to the carrier transport in the organic films. The morphology of the organic layer grown on the bare SiO2/Si substrate is also presented. The analysis of spatial correlations shows that the CuPc films grow on the SiO2 according to the mixed-layer mode.

Ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are produced, based on organic heterojunctions fabricated by a two-step vacuum-deposition process. Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) deposited at a high temperature (250 degrees C) acts as the first (p-type component) layer, and hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) deposited at room temperature (25 degrees C) acts as the second (n-type component) layer. A heterojunction with an interpenetrating network is obtained as the active layer for the OFETs. These heterojunction devices display significant ambipolar charge transport with symmetric electron and hole mobilities of the order of 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in air. Conductive channels are at the interface between the F16CuPc and CuPc domains in the interpenetrating networks. Electrons are transported in the F16CuPc regions, and holes in the CuPc regions. The molecular arrangement in the heterojunction is well ordered, resulting in a balance of the two carrier densities responsible for the ambipolar electrical characteristics. The thin-film morphology of the organic heterojunction with its interpenetrating network structure can be controlled well by the vacuum-deposition process.

A diode with a reverse rectifying characteristics was fabricated based on the organic heterojunction of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper-hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (F16CuPc). At the heterojunction interface, HOMO of CuPc is bended upwards and LUMO of F16CuPc is bended downwards, since the charge carriers were accumulated at both side of the interface, electrons in F16CuPc and holes in CuPc. The thickness of holes accumulated at the CuPc layer is about 10 nm. which was determined by fabricating organic field-effect transistors with active layers in series of thickness. By utilizing the heterojunction-effect, the threshold voltage in organic transistors can be modified.
