The electrochemically deposited poly(o-phenylenediamine) film on a Pt electrode has been investigated utilizing in situ external reflection FTIR spectroelectrochemistry technique. The prepared ladder polymer film is found to be partially ring-opened. The dopant ClO4- is evidenced to orient in such a way that more than one oxygen atom attach to the charge sites of the polymer. This suggests that positive charges of oxidized polymer are partially delocalized over the whole chains. The proton movement observed during the oxidation reaction is associated with the solvated MeCN molecule. It is proposed that the proton diffusion, dissolvation and protonation of the film may be essential to the electrochemical reduction reaction of the film. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Eastman-AQ 55D was coated onto a carbon fiber microelectrode surface, and the resulting modified electrodes exhibited high stability. Substantial improvement in the stability was observed as a result of good adhesion and the strong binding of large hydrophobic cations of Eastman AQ 55D. The electrode reaction of meldola blue bound in the polymer film showed a reversible, one-electron transfer process. The effects of solution pH and influence of supporting electrolyte on the modified carbon fiber microelectrode are discussed. The diffusion coefficient of meldola blue in the AQ polymer film determined by chronoamperometry is 2.3 x 10(-18) cm(2) s(-1), and the heterogeneous rate constant of meldola blue at the AQ polymer film/electrode determined by normal pulse voltammetry is 3.97 x 10(-3) cms(-1).

Electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing viologen group are formed through the adsorption of thiol-functionalized viologen compound CH3(CH2)(9)V2+(CH2)(8)SH, where V2+ is N,N'-dialkylbipyridinium (i.e. a viologen group), onto gold electrodes from methanol/water solution and its electrochemical behavior is investigated ty Ac voltammetry and square wave voltammetry, which have the high sensitivity against background charging. The viologen SAM formed is a sub-monolayer and the normal potentials corresponding to the two successive one-electron transfer processes of the active centers (viologen) are -360 mV and -750 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer solutions (pH 6.96) respectively, and the standard electron transfer rate constant is 9.0 s(-1). The electrochemical behavior of this SAM in various solutions has been preliminarily discussed.

Three couples of reversible redox waves of the SiW12O404- anion which are composed of two one-electron and one two-electron processes occur in the potential range +0.1 to -0.7 V in aqueous solutions. The first (most positive) and third (most negative) redox waves exhibit good electrocatalytic activities for nitrite reduction in acid solutions with pH < 2 for the former and with pH similar or equal to 4 for the latter. The behavior of the third catalytic wave, which is quite unusual, was studied in detail. The rate constant governing the reduction of NO2- by the first wave of SiW12O404- was measured by an ultramicrodisk electrode as 3.73 x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1).

LnCl(3) (Ln = Nd, Gd) reacts with C5H9C5H4Na (or K2C8H8) in THF (C5H9C5H4 = cyclopentylcyclopentadienyl) in the ratio of 1:1 to give (C5H9C5H4)LnCl(2)(THF)(n) (or (C8H8)LnCl(2)(THF)(n)], which further reacts with K2C8H8 (or C5H9C5H4Na) in THF to form the title complexes. If Ln = Nd the complex (C8H8)Nd(C5H9C5H4)(THF)(2) (a) was obtained: when Ln = Gd the 1:1 complex [(C8H8)Gd(C5H9C5H4)(THF)][(C5H8)Gd(C5H9C5H4)(THF)(2)] (b) was obtained in crystalline form. The crystal structure analysis shows that in (C8H8)Ln(C5H9C5H4)(THF)(2) (Ln = Nd or Gd), the Cyclopentylcyclopentadienyl (eta(5)), cyclooctatetraenyl (eta(8)) and two oxygen atoms from THF are coordinated to Nd3+ (or Gd3+) with coordination number 10. The centroid of the cyclopentadienyl ring (Cp') in C5H9C5H4 group, cyclooctatetraenyl centroid (COT) and two oxygens (THF) form a twisted tetrahedron around Nd3+ (or Gd3+). In (C8H8)Gd(C5H9C5H4)(THF), the cyclopentyl-cyclopentadienyl (eta(5)), cyclooctatetraenyl (eta(8)) and one oxygen atom are coordinated to Gd3+ with the coordination number of 9 and Cp', COT and oxygen atom form a triangular plane around Gd3+, which is almost in the plane (dev. - 0.0144 Angstrom).

An investigation of electrode oxidation processes of (tetra-phenylporphinato) manganese (III) Perchlorate, (TPS)Mn(III)ClO4, was carried out during the titration of chloride anions by conventional cyclic voltammetry, thin-layer cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. It was demonstrated that in the presence of one equivalent amount of Cl-, the first one electron oxidation reaction corresponds to the Mn(III)I cation radical oxidation, and the second one electron oxidation corresponds to the cation radical/dication generation followed by an iso-porphyrin formation reaction, however in the presence of two equivalent amount of Cl-, the first one electron oxidation of Mn(III) gives Mn(IV) porphyrin and the second one electron oxidation generates cation radicals of Mn(IV) followed by an iso-porphyrin formation reactions. Mechanisms of these redox processes are postulated.

The compound (t-BuCp)2PrCl.2THF (1) crystallizes from THF in monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with unit cell dimensions a = 15.080(3), b = 8.855(2), c = 21.196(5) angstrom, beta = 110.34(2)degrees, V = 2653.9 angstrom-3 and D(calcd) = 1.41 g/cm3 for Z = 4. The central metal Pr is coordinated to two t-BuCp ring centroids, one chlorine atom and two THF forming a distorted trigonal bipyramid. The crystal of (t-BuCp)2YbCl.THF (2) belongs to the monoclinic crystal system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.726(1), b = 12.554(2), c = 23.200(6) angstrom, beta = 97.77(2)degrees, V = 2229.56 angstrom-3, D(calcd) = 1.50 g/cm3 and Z = 4. The t-BuCp ring centroids, the chlorine atom and the oxygen atom of the THF describe a distorted tetrahedron around the central ion of ytterbium.

The absorption spectra. cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of [Ni(II)DPTAA] and [Co(II)DPTAA] (DPTAA = 6,13-diphenyldibenzo[b,i][1,4,8,11] tetraaza[14]annulene) complexes in DMF are reported in detail. The ligand oxidation is observed for [Ni(II)DPTAA] at +0.70 V vs. SCE whereas Ni2(+/+) occurs at - 1.60 V. For [Co(II)DPTAA], a ligand oxidation redox couple is seen at +0.56 V while the Co2+/+ and Co2+/3+ redox couples appear at -1.21 and +0.24 V, respectively. All observed redox couples are assigned to reversible one-electron processes on account of peak separations and scan-rate dependency. These processes were further investigated by spectroelectrochemistry for [Co(II)DPTAA]. For [Co(II)DPTAA], axial ligation of pyridine was found to shift the Co2+/3+ redox couple more negative. while the ligand oxidation was shifted to more positive potentials. From a spectrophotometric titration of [Co(II)DPTAA] with pyridine an equilibrium constant, K-f, was determined for the binding of pyridine to [Co(II)DPTAA]. This was found to be 10.2 dm(3) mol(-1), slightly lower than that of [Co(II)TAA], indicating the influence of the phenyl groups. From this value and shifts in the Co2+/3+ redox couple upon ligation, an equilibrium constant for the binding of pyridine to [Co(III)DPTAA], K'(f), was found to be 5.06 x 10(6) dm(3) mol(-1). In recent years there have been many studies of multiple ionization of closed shell rare gas atoms by intense laser fields. Until now no similar work has been done in the study of more diverse targets such as negative ions where low binding energies and strong electron correlations could yield distinctive behaviour. We present the first results of ionization of more than one electron from a range of atomic negative ions by intense laser pulses. Although these pulses are long by modern standards, and tend to produce sequential ionization in atoms, the positive ion yields from the negative ions do not depend predictably on the ionization potentials. This suggests that there may, intriguingly, be an alternative mechanism enhancing double ionization at low intensities.

We review the current state of the art in EELS fingerprinting by computer simulation, focusing on the bandstructure approach to the problem. Currently calculations are made using a one electron theory, but we describe in principle the way to go beyond this to include final state effects. We include these effects within the one electron framework using the Slater transition state formula and assess the errors involved. Two examples are then given which illustrate the use of the one electron approximation within density functional theory. Our approach is to combine predicted atomic structure with predicted electronic structure to assist in fingerprinting of complex crystal structures.

We propose a physical mechanism that leads to the emergence of secondary threshold laws in processes of multiple ionization of atoms. We argue that the removal of n electrons (n>2) from a many-electron atom may proceed via intermediate resonant states of the corresponding doubly charged ion. For atoms such as rare gases, the density of such resonances in the vicinity of subsequent ionization thresholds is high. As a result, the appearance energies for multiply charged ions are close to these thresholds, while the effective power indices mu in the near-threshold energy dependence of the cross section, sigmaproportional toE(mu), are lower compared to those from the Wannier theory. This provides a possible explanation of the recent experimental results of B. Gstir [Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. B 205, 413 (2003)].
