Selected ubiquitous technologies encourage collaborative participation between higher education students and educators within a virtual socially networked e-learning landscape. Multiple modes of teaching and learning, ranging from real world experiences, to text and digital images accessed within the Deakin Studies Online learning management system and a constructed virtual world in which the user’s creative imagination transports them to the “other side” of their computer screens is discussed in this paper. These constructed environments support interaction between communities of learners and enable multiple simultaneous participants to access graphically built 3D environments, interact with digital artifacts and various functional tools and represent themselves through avatars, to communicate with other participants and engage in collaborative art learning. A narrative interpretative research approach was used to profile the 21st century higher education student learner, to investigate the lived experience and multiple art learning perspectives documented in student visual journal entries and art educator observations to ascertain if an e-technology rich augmented learning environment resulted in the establishment of more effective e-learning communities of practice.

In current constraint-based (Pearl-style) systems for discovering Bayesian networks, inputs with deterministic relations are prohibited. This restricts the applicability of these systems. In this paper, we formalize a sufficient condition under which Bayesian networks can be recovered even with deterministic relations. The sufficient condition leads to an improvement to Pearl’s IC algorithm; other constraint-based algorithms can be similarly improved. The new algorithm, assuming the sufficient condition proposed, is able to recover Bayesian networks with deterministic relations, and moreover suffers no loss of performance when applied to nondeterministic Bayesian networks.

style="font-size: 12px;">This chapter aims to explore the theory of transformative learning as a possible style="font-size: 12px;">explanation for the changes international students make in their journey to style="font-size: 12px;">negotiate higher education. The chapter is derived from a doctoral study that style="font-size: 12px;">involved international Chinese and Vietnamese students' adaptation to Australian style="font-size: 12px;">higher education academic practices (Tran 2007). Within this chapter, transstyle="font-size: 12px;">formative learning is viewed as a changing process in which international students style="font-size: 12px;">construct reality through revisiting their existing assumptions and moving towards style="font-size: 12px;">life-changing developments in their personal and professional perspectives style="font-size: 12px;">(Cranton 2002; Mezirow 2000). It will be argued in this chapter that international style="font-size: 12px;">students' process of negotiating higher education is a dynamic interplay between style="font-size: 12px;">challenges and transformative power. Cross-border intercultural experiences are style="font-size: 12px;">intimately linked to opportunities for self-transformation, and the challenging style="font-size: 12px;">experiences that international students go through indeed foster the conditions style="font-size: 12px;">for professional development and life-enhancing changes to take place. Given the style="font-size: 12px;">current lack of theoretical and empirical research on the transformative power of style="font-size: 12px;">international students, there is a critical need for more research on the transstyle="font-size: 12px;">formative characteristics of international students and how best to capitalize on style="font-size: 12px;">their potential. In this chapter, I draw on excerpts from two rounds of interviews style="font-size: 12px;">with individual international students to illustrate the specific ways in which style="font-size: 12px;">international students have the capacity to transform their own learning and style="font-size: 12px;">develop life-enhancing skills. The discussion shows that they experience evolution style="font-size: 12px;">in professional outlook, attitudes and personal qualities through the process of style="font-size: 12px;">critical self-reflection and adaptation to disciplinary demands in higher education. style="font-size: 12px;">The chapter also highlights the contradictions regarding the discursive practices style="font-size: 12px;">within the current context of international education export.

The nephrology educators network [NEN] recognised in 2007 that inequities existed in the access and delivery of evidence based renal education programs particularly to nurses in regional and remote areas. To address this, a web-based approach to learning, through the development of peer reviewed, interactive nephrology e-learning programs was adopted. These programs aligned with the tenets of e-learning instructional design and afforded more effective and consistent clinical support and induction for nurses in the renal specialty. The e-learning programs promote a standardised evidence-based approach to nephrology education and were developed by content experts from across Australia and New Zealand. The design methodology avoided the duplication of resources while also encouraging knowledge transfer between participating health organisations.

style="font-size: 12px;">This paper will discuss the development and successful implementation of these e-learning programs across renal healthcare units in Australasia. Implemented packages include: Introduction to Buttonhole Cannulation – featuring an interactive ultrasound and cannulation application; Introduction to Haemodialysis; Introduction to Peritoneal Dialysis [PD], featuring simulated PD machines, allowing for the teaching of troubleshooting without compromising patient safety. E-learning programs are further supported through interactive case scenarios that present unfolding real world simulations and enable learners to meet different patients and manage their care while learning about key messages relating to renal health. Modules currently in development include; Acute Kidney Injury; Fluid Assessment, Water Quality and Vascular Access. The implementation of these programs assist the facilitation of positive change in teaching and learning practices in nephrology nursing aimed at improving patient outcomes.

style="text-align: justify;">Dorothy Heathcote understood teaching and learning to take place in a kind of ‘crucible’ in which participants, who are both teachers and learners, contribute to the mix sometimes resulting in a radical transformation. This paper reports the ways Heathcote’s ideas have influenced both research and practice in the Teaching for Diversity workshop - a drama workshop that brings together pre-service teachers, teacher educators and actors from Fusion Theatre, a community-based theatre company for people with intellectual disabilities.


In a reversal of the usual relationship, actors with disabilities are positioned as experts leading student teachers and lecturers in the drama workshop. This paper describes their transformation through a kind of mantle of the expert – the expert in the antechamber. Within this space all participants, as if in Heathcote’s crucible, are stirred into new understandings and pre-service teachers are challenged into new ways of thinking about disability and inclusive education.

This paper presents an ontology-based conceptual framework for effectively managing exploratory e-learning resources. The proposed framework has five significant novel features including authentication of retrieved resources, automatic ontology-based query refinement, reuse-oriented management of retrieved resources, adaptive retrieval of learning resources based on the style and preference of individual learners, and synthesisation of retrieval and management activities for creating reusable learning repositories. The applicability of the framework is demonstrated using a sample fragment of an ontology developed in the database domain.

Abstract: The evolution of online teaching in higher education demands a change in the types of pedagogical philosophies and methods used in these courses. This chapter will discuss how a jigsaw model facilitated independent learning and enhanced student learning by working in teams. To accomplish this objective each student needed to communicate with a small group of other students on line and contribute equally for a common goal. A parallel aim was to overcome postgraduate students’ reluctance to utilise technology and communicate within the Cloud, in particular when student groups are big. The authors have found that postgraduate students often experience a sense of learning in isolation. An added benefit was the social dimension experienced within the activity. The chapter will reveal how a jigsaw style integrated learning tool was a successful collaborative learning experience in a classroom setting. The jigsaw activity was designed to enable students to share ‘artefacts’ and knowledge with a small group of students and the lecturer by using the E-Portfolio.  In conclusion, it will be argued that this creative and innovative participatory Cloud learning experience offered more students the opportunity to collaborate within a team in the Cloud. This E-portfolio learning activity introduced the electronic style of information sharing to postgraduate students and additionally the interactive and creative jigsaw learning activity assisted students to navigate the Cloud, use E-portfolio and engage in an environment in which they felt comfortable to communicate in.

Nowadays, the popularity of the Web encourages the development of Hypermedia Systems dedicated to e-learning. Nevertheless, most of the available Web teaching systems apply the traditional paper-based learning resources presented as HTML pages making no use of the new capabilities provided by the Web. There is a challenge to develop educative systems that adapt the educative content to the style of learning, context and background of each student. Another research issue is the capacity to interoperate on the Web reusing learning objects. This work presents an approach to address these two issues by using the technologies of the Semantic Web. The approach presented here models the knowledge of the educative content and the learner’s profile with ontologies whose vocabularies are a refinement of those defined on standards situated on the Web as reference points to provide semantics. Ontologies enable the representation of metadata concerning simple learning objects and the rules that define the way that they can feasibly be assembled to configure more complex ones. These complex learning objects could be created dynamically according to the learners’ profile by intelligent agents that use the ontologies as the source of their beliefs. Interoperability issues were addressed by using an application profile of the IEEE LOM- Learning Object Metadata standard.

This paper aims to present the use of a learning object (CADILAG), developed to facilitate understanding data structure operations by using visual presentations and animations. The CADILAG allows visualizing the behavior of algorithms usually discussed during Computer Science and Information System courses. For each data structure it is possible visualizing its content and its operation dynamically. Its use was evaluated an the results are presented. © 2012 AISTI.

In this action research study of my classroom of 10th grade Algebra II students, I investigated three related areas. First, I looked at how heterogeneous cooperative groups, where students in the group are responsible to present material, increase the number of students on task and the time on task when compared to individual practice. I noticed that their time on task might have been about the same, but they were communicating with each other mathematically. The second area I examined was the effect heterogeneous cooperative groups had on the teacher’s and the students’ verbal and nonverbal problem solving skills and understanding when compared to individual practice. At the end of the action research, students were questioning each other, and the instructor was answering questions only when the entire group had a question. The third area of data collection focused on what effect heterogeneous cooperative groups had on students’ listening skills when compared to individual practice. In the research I implemented individual quizzes and individual presentations. Both of these had a positive effect on listing in the groups. As a result of this research, I plan to continue implementing the round robin style of in- class practice with heterogeneous grouping and randomly selected individual presentations. For individual accountability I will continue the practice of individual quizzes one to two times a week.

A successful actor often requires a specific acting method or style to enhance their performance. Through theatrical research, rehearsal and performance, an actor can narrow down their seemingly endless search for the most productive methodology. By researching, studying, and applying the methods of Constantin Stanislavski, Stella Adler,and Tadashi Suzuki to my rehearsal process, I have found my most effective acting style: Stella Adler?s method. I utilize this acting method during the performance period of my early professional acting career. Experimental research for this thesis was completed inthe studio. I applied each of the three aforementioned methods to a dramatic/classical monologue. The results I gathered helped me to decide upon Adler?s methodology to carry with me through my upcoming professional auditions and career. From casting resulting from the auditions, I will employ the methodology to my professional work asan actress. Each acting teacher has provided the performance world with a new way to experience their stage time. The methods are unique and enable the actor to find the most dynamic performance through engaging technical skill.

Throughout the years, the role that parents play with regard to a child’s academic achievement has been the source of considerable research. The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student’s learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate therelationship among the three styles of parenting, learning autonomy, perceived parental autonomy support, and scholastic achievement in undergraduate college students. Sixty-one participants were recruited at a small liberal arts college in the northeastern United States to complete questionnaires, which measured perceived parental authority of the participants’ parents, perceived parental autonomy support, and students’ own learning autonomy. The participants were also asked to list their grade point average. The results revealed positive and negative correlations between many of the variables in the study;however, simple regression analyses did not yield any statistically significant relationships between parental authority, learning autonomy, perceived autonomy support, and scholastic achievement.

The purpose of this paper is to examine ways in which pedagogy and gender of instructor impact the development of self-regulated learning strategies as assessed by the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) in male and female undergraduate engineering students. Pedagogy was operationalized as two general formats: lecture plus active learning techniques or problem-base/project-based learning. One hundred seventy-six students from four universities participated in the study. Within-group analyses found significant differences with regard to pedagogy, instructors’ gender, and student gender on the learning strategies and motivation subscales as operationalized by the MSLQ. Male and females students reported significant post-test differences with regard to the gender of instructor and the style of pedagogy. The results of this study showed a pattern where more positive responses for students of both genders were found with the same-gendered instructor. The results also suggested that male students responded more positively to project and problem-based courses with changes evidenced in motivation strategies and resource management. Female students showed decreases in resource management in these two types of courses. Further, female students reported increases in the lecture with active learning courses.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze how team management affects team-learning activities. Design/methodology/approach – The authors empirically study 68 teams as they operate in the natural business context of a major Spanish bank. Quantitative research utilizing multiple regression analyses is used to test hypotheses. Findings – The leadership behaviour (consideration, initiation of structure) displayed by the team leader plays a key role in facilitating team learning. Team leader behaviour characterised by consideration and in particular by initiation of structure are both positively related to team-learning activities. Cross-training of team members also contributes to team-learning behaviour. Research limitations/implications – A specific setting may limit the generalizability of findings. Further research may accordingly investigate to what extent these results can be generalized to other settings or other aspects of team learning. Practical implications – The leadership style adopted by the team leader, as well as cross-training of members, affect team-learning activities. These results link leadership theory to collective learning in teams and organizations, and suggest ways leaders can contribute to improved learning. Originality/value – The study provides new insight into how management of teams facilitates team-learning activities. While consideration is somewhat related to team learning, initiation of structure as well as cross-training appear as key variables.
