Este estudo teve como principal objetivo determinar as causas que levam à invisibilidade do Conselho Geral(CG). Este, conjuntamente com o Diretor, o Conselho Pedagógico e o Conselho Administrativo, constituem os órgãos de gestão e administração dos Agrupamentos de Escolas ou escolas não Agrupadas (AE/E). O CG representa o órgão de maior poder na hierarquia formalmente definida para a gestão e administração dos AE/E, pelo que devia ser conhecido por toda a comunidade escolar. Foi desenvolvido em três AE/E do concelho de Matosinhos, tendo sido inquiridos professores, alunos e assistentes operacionais/técnicos na tentativa de averiguar o (re)conhecimento do órgão em estudo e das suas competências. Foram ainda entrevistados os Diretores e os presidentes dos Conselhos Gerais de cada escola de forma aferir o tipo de relação que se estabelece entre eles. Fizeram ainda parte da nossa amostra Conselheiros, grupo privilegiado quer a nível de conhecimento das competências do Conselho Geral quer no reconhecimento do tipo de relação que se estabelece entre Diretor e Conselho Geral. Os resultados por nós obtidos mostram que o Conselho Geral é um órgão pouco conhecido da comunidade escolar. No cômputo geral, a comunidade escolar mais restrita desconhece o seu funcionamento bem como as suas competências. Face aos resultados foi por nós elaborado um Plano de Ação que visa melhorar o conhecimento que a comunidade tem relativamente ao Conselho Geral, e com ele melhorar a gestão estratégica dos AE/E.

Generalised refraction is a topic which has, thus far, garnered far less attention than it deserves. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the potential that generalised refraction has to offer with regards to imaging and its application to designing new passive optical devices. Specifically in this thesis we will explore two types of gener- alised refraction which takes place across a planar interface: refraction by generalised confocal lenslet arrays (gCLAs), and refraction by ray-rotation sheets. We will show that the corresponding laws of refraction for these interfaces produce, in general, light-ray fields with non-zero curl, and as such do not have a corresponding outgoing waveform. We will then show that gCLAs perform integral, geometrical imaging, and that this enables them to be considered as approximate realisations of metric tensor interfaces. The concept of piecewise transformation optics will be introduced and we will show that it is possible to use gCLAs along with other optical elements such as lenses to design simple piecewise transformation-optics devices such as invisibility cloaks and insulation windows. Finally, we shall show that ray-rotation sheets can be interpreted as performing geometrical imaging into complex space, and that as a consequence, ray-rotation sheets and gCLAs may in fact be more closely related than first realised. We conclude with a summary of potential future projects which lead naturally from the results of this thesis.

Previous work has drawn attention to the relative absence of British Chinese voices in public culture. No one is more aware of this invisibility than British-born Chinese people themselves. Since 2000 the emergence of Internet discussion sites produced by British Chinese young people has provided an important forum for many of them to grapple with questions concerning their identities, experiences and status in Britain. In this paper we explore the ways in which Internet usage by British-born Chinese people has facilitated forms of self-expression, collective identity production and social and political action. This examination of British Chinese websites raises important questions about inclusion and exclusion, citizenship, participation and the development of a sense of belonging in Britain, issues which are usually overlooked in relation to a group which appears to be well integrated and successful in higher education.

Muitos são os estudos e ativismos que chamam a atenção para a necessidade de ampliar as investigações e visibilidades de lésbicas na academia brasileira. Com vista a ampliar o conhecimento sobre essa população, propomos com a dissertação “O que sei, o que eu acho e o que me disseram: diálogos com jovens sobre lesbianidade”, desenvolvida no Programa de Pós-graduação em História da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande/RS, interrogar, problematizar e compreender as representações sobre a(s) lesbianidade(s) produzidas por cinco jovens de uma escola agrícola da região sul do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A pesquisa, orientada pelos Estudos Culturais Lesbofeministas, produziu seus dados a partir da Etnografia pós-crítica, subsidiada pelas abordagens metodológicas proporcionadas pelas “rodas de conversas” e anotações no “diário de campo”. Partindo das análises dos dados, podemos apontar que as estudantes possuem visões e entendimentos conceituais a respeito da(s) lesbianidade(s) e que esses já possuem um posicionamento crítico frente à forma como a mulher é retratada na sociedade. Entretanto, podemos verificar que a temática “lesbianidade(s)” – não diferente da forma como as demais mulheres são retratadas na escola, que é atravessada pela invisibilidade histórico-escolar – ancora-se em representações mediadas pela violência, limitadas às relações afetivo-sexuais e/ou dimensões domésticas e íntimas da sexualidade.

Contemporary museum spaces Interactions between visible and invisible dimensions Abstract: It can be considered that the contemporary organization of the museum’s program is divided into two different dimensions. The first relates to the concepts of displaying, disclosing and exhibiting and consists in the exhibition and public reception spaces. The second dimension comprises reservations and the technical and administrative services of the museum. At the visitor’s eye’s, these two dimensions of the museum can be defined as visible and invisible. In this context, the present dissertation analyzes, from the architectural point of view, how both dimensions can interact and the way that invisible dimension can be unveiled; ESPAÇOS MUSEOLÓGICOS CONTEMPORÂNEOS Interações entre a dimensão visível e a dimensão invisível Resumo: Pode considerar-se que a organização contemporânea do programa do museu se divide em duas dimensões. A primeira relaciona-se com os conceitos de mostrar, revelar e expor e é constituída pelos espaços de exposição e de acolhimento ao público. A segunda dimensão compreende as reservas e os serviços técnicos e administrativos do museu. Ao olhar do visitante, estas duas dimensões do museu podem definir-se como visível e invisível. This talk addresses the scarcity of critical material on Hilary Mantel’s writing in the academy. It questions the suitability of the ‘origin’ paradigm within the criticism that is available, which closes off the excess of Mantel’s texts through attempts to ‘unite’ her corpus. The ambiguity of her writing, and its suspicions, suggest Jacques Derrida’s thought as a pertinent means to read the differences in her work differently. The proximity of Jean-Luc Nancy’s philosophy with Derrida’s thought allows the significance of ellipsis to surface as a liberating catalyst for weaving the implications of Derrida’s thinking through the writing of Mantel. This synthesis constitutes an original combination because Mantel’s writing has not been closely studied, Derrida’s notion of ellipsis has been eclipsed by philosophy, and the combination of these two ‘invisibilities’ is seminal. The talk begins with an exploration of the mythologies I discovered and interrogated during the course of my thesis. It then considers the key points in Mantel’s writing career. In particular taking her from the difficulty and invisibility of 1979 when A Place of Greater Safety, her first novel, was rejected, to winning the Booker prize twice in succession in 2009 and 2012. It thereby traces the story of her shift from invisible to infamous, in terms of her treatment by the mainstream British media as well as her phenomenal post-millennium success.

This paper aims at analysing the presence of gypsy characters in two neo-Victorian popular films, namely Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman (2010) and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows (2011). The cultural construction of nineteenth-century gypsies, those “Others within Europe” (Boyarin 433) whose presence in Victorian fiction was peripheral, spectral and at times invisible (Nord 3-4), is simultaneously exploited and contested by these two neo-Victorian screen narratives to raise issues of otherness and invisibility on the screen. Setting off from the premise that screen texts, just like print texts, can also be participant in the neo-Victorian project of reimagining the underside of Victorian culture for contemporary audiences (Whelehan 273), this paper traces how the adaptation of Victorian gypsies for the screen, true to the palimpsestuous potential inherent to the process of adaptation (Hutcheon 6) and sharing the double drive between past and present which characterises the neo-Victorian genre (Arias and Pulham xiii; Shiller 539), hybridises our cultural memory of the Victorian Age on the screen while concurrently raises concerns over the persistent liminal status of gypsies in contemporary European culture. In particular, this paper illustrates how the tropes prototypically associated to gypsies (namely their nomadic lifestyle, mysticism, alienated existence or their perceived association to criminality) which can be traced back to Victorian culture are deployed on the neo-Victorian popular screen (with varyingly succesful outcomes) to comment on their (in)visibility in the European popular imagination.

Adaptability and invisibility are hallmarks of modern terrorism, and keeping pace with its dynamic nature presents a serious challenge for societies throughout the world. Innovations in computer science have incorporated applied mathematics to develop a wide array of predictive models to support the variety of approaches to counterterrorism. Predictive models are usually designed to forecast the location of attacks. Although this may protect individual structures or locations, it does not reduce the threat—it merely changes the target. While predictive models dedicated to events or social relationships receive much attention where the mathematical and social science communities intersect, models dedicated to terrorist locations such as safe-houses (rather than their targets or training sites) are rare and possibly nonexistent. At the time of this research, there were no publically available models designed to predict locations where violent extremists are likely to reside. This research uses France as a case study to present a complex systems model that incorporates multiple quantitative, qualitative and geospatial variables that differ in terms of scale, weight, and type. Though many of these variables are recognized by specialists in security studies, there remains controversy with respect to their relative importance, degree of interaction, and interdependence. Additionally, some of the variables proposed in this research are not generally recognized as drivers, yet they warrant examination based on their potential role within a complex system. This research tested multiple regression models and determined that geographically-weighted regression analysis produced the most accurate result to accommodate non-stationary coefficient behavior, demonstrating that geographic variables are critical to understanding and predicting the phenomenon of terrorism. This dissertation presents a flexible prototypical model that can be refined and applied to other regions to inform stakeholders such as policy-makers and law enforcement in their efforts to improve national security and enhance quality-of-life.

Both ludic and macabre, the theatrical works of Samuel Beckett and Jean Genet are a paradox to behold. Indeed, as this thesis seeks to illustrate, despite their vastly differing aesthetics, at the core of each playwright’s stage productions is a tension between the characters’ yearning for silence and invisibility, and the continual creation of an often humorous, chaotic, exaggerated or theatrical image that depicts this very longing. Seeking an impossible intersection between their image and their death, they are trapped in a double bind that guarantees aesthetic failure. In order to grasp the close, yet delicate, relationship between the image of death and the death of the image, as presented in the plays of Beckett and Genet, we will explore how the characters’ creative processes deflate the very images — both visual and auditory — that they create. More specifically, we will examine how mimesis both liberates and confines the characters; while the symbolic realm provides the only means of self-representation, it is also a source of profound alienation and powerlessness, for it never adequately conveys meaning. Thus, body, gesture, language and voice are each the site of simultaneous and ceaseless reappearance and disappearance, for which death remains the only (aporetic) cure. Struggling against theatrical form, which demands the actors’ and the audience’s physical presence, both playwrights make shrewd use of metatheatre to slowly empty the stage and thereby suggest the impending, yet impossible, erasure of their characters.

Con el paso y las transformaciones sociales, políticas y legales que implica una constituyente, en este caso la del 91, que daba nacimiento a la constitución del mismo año, se originó además una transición hacia un Estado social de derecho, pluriétnico y laico, el cual planteaba un discurso de diversidad e inclusión de la diferencia en diferentes aspectos de la vida social. Sin embargo, en el caso de la familia, esta constitución no representó cambios respecto al discurso estructura y funciones en la sociedad, pues perpetuaba el discurso familista, de una única forma legítima de familia: la nuclear patriarcal, implicando una falta de reconocimiento de la diversidad familiar en Colombia y provocando a su vez una afectación en la atención y protección social de las familias no reconocidas en Colombia. Tal es el caso de las familias monoparentales, cuya estructura no se corresponde a este discurso ideal de familia y gracias a su falta de reconocimiento tanto legal como social, la atención y protección social que reciben por parte del Estado, a través de las instituciones públicas de protección familiar, es parcializada a las jefaturas monoparentales femeninas, al igual de estigmatizadas. Pese a esto, desde 2013, ante la actual coyuntura de reivindicaciones sociales que buscan el reconocimiento de la diversidad de la familia en el país, han surgido mecanismos legales por parte de la corte constitucional, así como nuevas políticas de familia tanto a nivel nacional, como local, que están haciendo sus primeros acercamientos a lo que es la diversidad familiar y a cómo incluir y proteger a las familias. A lo largo del contacto con las instituciones públicas de protección familiar, donde se mostraron nuevas alternativas y avances que aunque representativos, aun no son suficientes, persistiendo la invisibilización tanto social como legal y una protección social parcializada de las familias monoparentales.
