The objective of this thesis was to study the relationship between firstorder capabilities and online innovations. First-order capabilities can be divided into market and technology capabilities, and they play an important role in the production of innovations. The study was carried out in publishing industry, where many changes have taken place in the online environment during the last few years. In the empirical research, four companies were studied, two magazine publishers and two newspaper publishers. The analysis was done in two phases; first every case was analyzed alone and then the cases were compared in cross-case analysis. The most important finding was the positive impact of market capability to the production of online innovations. The study also increased understanding about the relationship between market and technology capabilities and online innovations in general.

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the dynamics of the socio-technical system in the field of ageing. The study stems from the notion that the ageing of the population as a powerful megatrend has wide societal effects, and is not just a matter for the social and health sector. The central topic in the study is change: not only the age structures and structures of society are changing, but also at the same time there is constant development, for instance, in technologies, infrastructures and cultural perceptions. The changing concept of innovation has widened the understanding of innovations related to ageing from medical and assistive technological innovations to service and social innovations, as well as systemic innovations at different levels, which means the intertwined and co-evolutionary change in technologies, structures, services and thinking models. By the same token, the perceptions of older people and old age are becoming more multi-faceted: old age is no longer equated to illnesses and decline, but visions of active ageing and a third age have emerged, which are framed by choices, opportunities, resources and consumption in later life. The research task in this study is to open up the processes and mechanisms of change in the field of ageing, which are studied as a complex, multi-level and interrelated socio-technical system. The question is about co-effective elements consisting of macro-level landscape changes, the existing socio-technical regime (the rule system, practices and structures) and bottom-up niche-innovations. Societal transitions do not account for the things inside the regime alone, or for the long-term changes in the landscape, nor for the radical innovations, but for the interplay between all these levels. The research problem is studied through five research articles, which offer micro-level case studies to macro-level phenomenon. Each of the articles focus on different aspects related to ageing and change, and utilise various datasets. The framework of this study leans on the studies of socio-technical systems and multi-level perspective on transitions mainly developed by Frank Geels. Essential factors in transition from one socio-technological regime to another are the co-evolutionary processes between landscape changes, regime level and experimental niches. Landscape level changes, like the ageing of the population, destabilise the regime in the forms of coming pressures. This destabilization offers windows for opportunity to niche-innovations outside or at fringe of the regime, which, through their breakthrough, accelerate the transition process. However, the change is not easy because of various kinds of lock-ins and inertia, which tend to maintain the stability of the regime. In this dissertation, a constructionist approach of society is applied leaning mainly to the ideas of Anthony Giddens’ theory of structuration, with the dual nature of structures. The change is taking place in the interplay between actors and structures: structures shape people’s practices, but at the same time these practices constitute and reproduce social systems. Technology and other material aspects, as part of socio-technical systems, and the use of them, also take part in the structuration process. The findings of the study point out that co-evolutionary and co-effective relationships between economic, cultural, technological and institutional fields, as well as relationships between landscape changes, changes in the local and regime-level practices and rule systems, are a very complex and multi-level dynamic socio-technical phenomenon. At the landscape level of ageing, which creates the pressures and triggers to the regime change, there are three remarkable megatrends: demographic change, changes in the global economy and the development of technologies. These exert pressures to the socio-technical regime, which as a rule system is experiencing changes in the form of new markets and consumer habits, new ways of perceiving ageing, new models of organising the health care and other services and as new ways of considering innovation and innovativeness. There are also inner dynamics in the relationships between these aspects within the regime. These are interrelated and coconstructed: the prevailing perceptions of ageing and innovation, for instance, reflect the ageing policies, innovation policies, societal structures, organising models, technology and scientific discussion, and vice versa. Technology is part of the inner dynamics of the sociotechnological regime. Physical properties of the artefacts set limitations and opportunities with regard to their functions and uses. The use of and discussion about technology, contributes producing and reproducing the perceptions of old age. For societal transition, micro-level changes are also needed, in form of niche-innovations, for instance new services, organisational models or new technologies, Regimes, as stabilitystriven systems, tend to generate incremental innovations, but radically new innovations are generated in experimental niches protected from ‘normal’ market selection. The windows of opportunity for radical novelties may be opened if the circumstances are favourable for instance by tensions in the socio-technical regime affected by landscape level changes. This dissertation indicates that a change is taking place, firstly, in the dynamic interactionbetween levels, as a result of purposive action and governance to some extent. Breaking the inertia and using the window of opportunity for change and innovation offered by dynamics between levels, presupposes the actors’ special capabilities and actions such as dynamic capabilities and distance management. Secondly, the change is taking place the socio-technological negotiations inside the regime: interaction between technological and social, which is embodied in the use of technology. The use of technology includes small-level contextual scripts that also participate in forming broader societal scripts (for instance defining old age at the society level), which in their turn affect the formation of policies for innovation and ageing. Thirdly, the change is taking place by the means of active formation of the multi-actor innovation networks, where the role of distance management is crucial to facilitate the communication between actors coming from different backgrounds as well as to help the niches born outside the regime to utilise the window of opportunity offered by regime destabilisation. This dissertation has both theoretical and practical contributions. This study participates in the discussion of action-oriented view on transition by opening up of the socio-technological, coevolutionary processes of the multi-faceted phenomenon of ageing, which has lacked systematic analyses. The focus of this study, however, is not on the large-scale coordination and governance, but rather on opening up the incremental elements and structuration processes, which contribute to the transition little by little, and which can be affected to. This increases the practical importance of this dissertation, by highlighting the importance of very tiny, everyday elements in the change processes in the long run.

The endogenous microbiota, constituting the microbes that live inside and on humans, is estimated to outnumber human cells by a factor of ten. This commensal microbial population has an important role in many physiological functions, with the densest microbiota population found in the colon. The colonic microbiota is a highly complex and diverse bacterial ecosystem, and a delicate balance exists between the gut microbiota and its host. An imbalance in the microbial ecosystem may lead to severe symptoms in and also beyond the gastrointestinal tract. Due to the important role of the gut microbiota in human health, means of its modification have been introduced in the dietary concepts of pro-, pre- and synbiotics. Prebiotics, which are usually carbohydrates, strive to selectively influence beneficial microbes resident in the colon with the aim of modifying the composition and functionality of the commensal microbial population towards a purportedly healthier one. The study of prebiotic effects on colonic micro-organisms is typically done by using human faecal material, though this provides relatively little information on bacterial populations and metabolic events in different parts of the colon. For this reason, several in vitro models have been developed to investigate the gut microbiota. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to screen through some of the promising prebiotic candidates, characterize their effects on the microbiota through the use of two in vitro methods (pure microbial cultures and a colon simulator model) and to evaluate their potential as emerging prebiotics or synbiotics when combined with the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis . As a result of the screening work and subsequent colon simulation studies, several compounds with promising features were identified. Xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), which have previously already shown promise as prebiotic compounds, were well fermented by several probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis strains in pure culture studies and in the following simulation studies utilizing the complex microbiota by endogenous B. lactis Another promising compound was panose, a trisaccharide belonging to isomalto-oligosaccharides (IMO) that also was also able to modify the microbiota in vitro by increasing the number of beneficial microbes investigated. Panose has not been widely studied previously and therefore, this thesis work provided the first data on panose fermentation in mixed colonic microbiota. Galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) is an established prebiotic, and it was studied here in conjunction with another potential polygosaccharide polydextrose (PDX) and probiotic B. lactis Bi-07. In this final study, the synbiotics including GOS were more effective than the constituting pro- or prebiotics alone in modulating the microbiota composition, thus indicating a synergy resulting from the combination. The results obtained in this in vitro work can be, and have already been, utilized in product development aimed at the nutritional modification of the human colonic microbiota. Some of the compounds have entered the human clinical intervention phase to nvestigate in more detail the prebiotic and synbiotic properties seen in these in vitro studies.

Investment decision-making on far-reaching innovation ideas is one of the key challenges practitioners and academics face in the field of innovation management. However, the management practices and theories strongly rely on evaluation systems that do not fit in well with this setting. These systems and practices normally cannot capture the value of future opportunities under high uncertainty because they ignore the firm’s potential for growth and flexibility. Real options theory and options-based methods have been offered as a solution to facilitate decision-making on highly uncertain investment objects. Much of the uncertainty inherent in these investment objects is attributable to unknown future events. In this setting, real options theory and methods have faced some challenges. First, the theory and its applications have largely been limited to market-priced real assets. Second, the options perspective has not proved as useful as anticipated because the tools it offers are perceived to be too complicated for managerial use. Third, there are challenges related to the type of uncertainty existing real options methods can handle: they are primarily limited to parametric uncertainty. Nevertheless, the theory is considered promising in the context of far-reaching and strategically important innovation ideas. The objective of this dissertation is to clarify the potential of options-based methodology in the identification of innovation opportunities. The constructive research approach gives new insights into the development potential of real options theory under non-parametric and closeto- radical uncertainty. The distinction between real options and strategic options is presented as an explanans for the discovered limitations of the theory. The findings offer managers a new means of assessing future innovation ideas based on the frameworks constructed during the course of the study.

Early identification of beginning readers at risk of developing reading and writing difficulties plays an important role in the prevention and provision of appropriate intervention. In Tanzania, as in other countries, there are children in schools who are at risk of developing reading and writing difficulties. Many of these children complete school without being identified and without proper and relevant support. The main language in Tanzania is Kiswahili, a transparent language. Contextually relevant, reliable and valid instruments of identification are needed in Tanzanian schools. This study aimed at the construction and validation of a group-based screening instrument in the Kiswahili language for identifying beginning readers at risk of reading and writing difficulties. In studying the function of the test there was special interest in analyzing the explanatory power of certain contextual factors related to the home and school. Halfway through grade one, 337 children from four purposively selected primary schools in Morogoro municipality were screened with a group test consisting of 7 subscales measuring phonological awareness, word and letter knowledge and spelling. A questionnaire about background factors and the home and school environments related to literacy was also used. The schools were chosen based on performance status (i.e. high, good, average and low performing schools) in order to include variation. For validation, 64 children were chosen from the original sample to take an individual test measuring nonsense word reading, word reading, actual text reading, one-minute reading and writing. School marks from grade one and a follow-up test half way through grade two were also used for validation. The correlations between the results from the group test and the three measures used for validation were very high (.83-.95). Content validity of the group test was established by using items drawn from authorized text books for reading in grade one. Construct validity was analyzed through item analysis and principal component analysis. The difficulty level of most items in both the group test and the follow-up test was good. The items also discriminated well. Principal component analysis revealed one powerful latent dimension (initial literacy factor), accounting for 93% of the variance. This implies that it could be possible to use any set of the subtests of the group test for screening and prediction. The K-Means cluster analysis revealed four clusters: at-risk children, strugglers, readers and good readers. The main concern in this study was with the groups of at-risk children (24%) and strugglers (22%), who need the most assistance. The predictive validity of the group test was analyzed by correlating the measures from the two school years and by cross tabulating grade one and grade two clusters. All the correlations were positive and very high, and 94% of the at-risk children in grade two were already identified in the group test in grade one. The explanatory power of some of the home and school factors was very strong. The number of books at home accounted for 38% of the variance in reading and writing ability measured by the group test. Parents´ reading ability and the support children received at home for schoolwork were also influential factors. Among the studied school factors school attendance had the strongest explanatory power, accounting for 21% of the variance in reading and writing ability. Having been in nursery school was also of importance. Based on the findings in the study a short version of the group test was created. It is suggested for use in the screening processes in grade one aiming at identifying children at risk of reading and writing difficulties in the Tanzanian context. Suggestions for further research as well as for actions for improving the literacy skills of Tanzanian children are presented.

Julkisen sektorin itsensä synnyttämien innovaatioiden ja innovoinnin näkökulma on verrattain tuore innovaatiotutkimuksen tutkimuskohde. Vielä uudempaa lähestymistapaa edustaa käyttäjälähtöinen ja käyttäjää osallistava palveluinnovaatiotutkimus julkisella sektorilla. Käyttäjälähtöisen ja käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan toteuttamisesta ollaan kiinnostuneita, mutta tieteelliseen tutkimukseen perustuva tieto lähestymistavasta on vielä kohtuullisen niukkaa. Tämän käyttäjälähtöiseen palvelujen innovointiin keskittyvän väitöskirjatutkimuksen päätavoitteena on mikrotasolla tunnistaa ja ryhmitellä käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan toteuttamisen haasteita julkisella sektorilla. Väitöskirjatutkimuksen alatavoitteena on tutkimuksesta saatavan tiedon avulla muodostaa kysymyslista tukemaan lähestymistavan käyttöönottamista ja toteuttamista julkisen sektorin palveluorganisaatioissa ja -verkostoissa. Julkisen palvelusektorin ohella väitöskirjan tutkimustuloksia voivat soveltuvin osin hyödyntää myös yksityisen ja kolmannen sektorin palveluorganisaatiot ja -verkostot sekä käyttäjälähtöisen innovaatiopolitiikan suunnitteluun ja sen jalkauttamiseen osallistuvat tahot. Haasteita lähestytään tutkimuksessa käyttäjälähtöisen ja käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan piirteiden kautta ja haasteita tarkastellaan kehittäjäviranomaisten (ryhmätaso) näkökulmasta. Kuntasektori on valittu tutkimukseen edustamaan julkista sektoria. Lähestymistavan piirteiksi tutkimuksessa määritellään käyttäjänäkökulman ohjaava rooli organisaation innovaatiotoiminnan strategisella tasolla ja palvelujen uudistamisprosessien tasoilla, avoimuus (erityisesti käyttäjärajapinta) ja tulkinnallisuus innovaatioprosessien varhaisessa vaiheessa sekä laaja-alainen käsitys innovaatioiden lähteistä käyttäjänäkökulmaa muodostettaessa. Tutkimuksen kohteena on hyvinvointipalveluinnovaatioprosessien varhainen vaihe, jolloin keskeisessä asemassa on uusien ideoiden sekä uuden tiedon ja ymmärryksen hankinta hyödynnettäväksi innovaatioprosessien seuraavissa vaiheissa. Tutkimuksessa rajaudutaan käyttäjälähtöisen palveluinnovoinnin muotoon, jossa käyttäjät intentionaalisesti ja konkreettisesti osallistetaan kehittäjäviranomaisjohtoisiin palveluinnovaatioprosesseihin. Käyttäjiksi tutkimuksessa ymmärretään palvelun loppukäyttäjät palvelujen ”ulkoisina hyödyntäjinä” ja yli sektorialisten palveluprosessien henkilöstö palvelujen ”sisäisinä hyödyntäjinä”. Hyvinvointipalveluista tutkimuksessa ovat edustettuina sosiaali- ja terveyspalvelut sekä ikäihmisten palvelukeskusten tarjoamat palvelut. Kuntasektorin innovaatiotoiminnan kenttä ymmärretään tutkimuksessa verkostomaisena kokonaisuutena, joka ylittää kuntien hallinnolliset rajat. Artikkeliväitöskirjana toteutetun väitöskirjatutkimuksen metodologia perustuu usean tapauksen tapaustutkimukseen (multiple case-studies) ja kvalitatiiviseen tutkimusotteeseen. Työn empiirinen osuus koostuu viidestä artikkelina julkaistusta osatutkimuksesta. Osatutkimuksissa käytetään tapaustutkimuksen eri variaatioita, ja tutkimusaineistot on kerätty kolmesta eri perustutkimusympäristöstä. Osatutkimuksien tapaukset on valittu palvelun käyttäjien ”äänen jatkumon” (the voice of the customer) eri kohdista. Käyttäjän ääntä käytetään tutkimuksessa metodisena ratkaisuna ja metaforana. Lisäksi käyttäjän ääni ymmärretään tutkimuksessa paremminkin kollektiivisena ja laajemmista palvelujen kehittämisnäkökulmista kertovana tekijänä kuin yksittäisten palvelun käyttäjien tarpeista ja toiveista kertovana metaforana. Käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan toteuttamisen haasteiksi julkisella sektorilla tutkimuksessa tunnistetaan viisi haastetta. Tiivistetysti haasteena on 1. palvelujen käyttäjien subjektiuteen perustuva käyttäjälähtöisyys palvelujen uudistamisessa 2. tunnistaa palvelun käyttäjät innovaatiotoiminnan voimavarana ja rohkaistua heidän osallistamiseensa 3. sitoutuminen yhteistoiminnallisuuteen käyttäjä- ja muita rajapintoja ylittävissä palvelujen uudistamisprosesseissa ja innovaatiohakuisuus työskentelyssä 4. oivaltaa palvelutoivelistoja ja asiakaspalautteita laajempia kehittämisnäkökulmia 5. synnyttää luottamukseen perustuva hyvä kierre palvelun käyttäjien ja kehittäjien välille. Tutkimustuloksena syntyneet haasteet paikannetaan tutkimuksessa käyttäjän äänen jatkumolle erilaisin painotuksin. Lisäksi tutkimustulosten pohjalta tehdään kolme keskeistä johtopäätöstä. Ensinnäkin palvelun kehittäjätahon sekä palvelun loppukäyttäjien ja palvelujen sisäisten hyödyntäjien väliltä on tunnistettavissa innovaatiopotentiaalia sisältäviä rakenteellisia aukkoja. Toiseksi kehittäjäviranomaistahon valmius ja halu laajentaa tiedonmuodostustaan palvelujen uudistamisessa palvelun käyttäjien kanssa yhteisöllisen tiedonmuodostuksen suuntaan on puutteellinen. Kolmanneksi palvelujen kehittäjätaho ei ole sisäistänyt riittävässä määrin käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan metodologisia perusajatuksia. Tutkimuksessa tunnistetut viisi haastetta osoittavat, että käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan käyttöönotto hyvinvointipalveluorganisaation tai -verkoston palvelujen innovoinnin lähestymistavaksi ei ole mekaaninen toimenpide. Lähestymistavan käyttöönottoa tukeva kysymyslista perustuu tutkimuksessa tunnistettuihin haasteisiin. Kysymyslista on laadittu siten, että kysymykset liittyvät laajasti julkisten palveluorganisaatioiden ja -verkostojen innovaatiokulttuuriin. Kaksiosaisen kysymyslistan ensimmäisen osan kysymykset käsittelevät innovointia ohjaavia mentaalisia malleja. Ensimmäisessä osassa esitetään esimerkiksi seuraava kysymys: ”Millaista käsitystäpalvelun käyttäjistä (kuntalaisista) sekä käyttäjien ja kehittäjien (viranomaisten) välisestä suhteesta ilmennämme palvelujen innovoinnissa; onko palvelujen käyttäjä (kuntalainen) kohde, jolle kehitetään palveluja, vai onko hän jopa välttämätön kehittämiskumppani?”. Kysymyslistan toisen osan kysymykset liittyvät innovaatiokäytänteisiin ja valmiuksiin. Esimerkkinä voidaan mainita seuraava kaksiosainen kysymys: ”Tukevatko innovaatiokäytänteemme käyttäjärajapinnan ylittäviä innovaatioprosesseja ja sitoudummeko avoimin mielin työskentelyyn palvelun käyttäjien, potentiaalisten käyttäjien tai ei-käyttäjien kanssa? Mitä hyötyjä koemme yhteistoiminnallisuudesta koituvan meille ja käyttäjille sekä innovaation laatuominaisuuksiin?”. Mitä tulee tutkimuksen otsikon alkuosaan ”kuulla vai kuunnella”, vastaus on, että pääpaino on sanalla ”kuulla”. Pohdintaluvussa tuodaan myös esille tarve – tai ainakin kriittisen tarkastelun tarve – käyttäjälähtöisen ja käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin käsitteen ja sen luonteen sekä tavoitteiden määrittelemiselle julkisen sektorin ominaispiirteistä käsin vastapainona alkuperältään yksityisen sektorin liiketoimintakontekstista lähtöisin oleville määrittelyille.

The present research aimed to develop a modeling capable of identifying the ideal profile of swine finishing producers using the interactive performance optimization, which began by verifying qualitative the criteria considered most relevant to the decision-making, generating a closed structured diagnosis that covers the socioeconomic aspects about the activity, until the design of a mathematical model able to translate the data obtained in quantitative information. For the verification, it was proposed a practical study for a universe of 120 members of a cooperative in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The results showed that, from the application and the definition of the ideal profile, it was possible to verify that 82 producers are in the group of those who have obtained a "Good" performance, and to 44 the result is in the range between 86% to 90% from the ideal, which means that most have short or medium-term conditions to evolve their status for the considered "Very Good", where only 12.5% of the producers are currently.

Tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää teknologiansiirrosta vuorovaikutusnäkökulmasta tehdyt empiiriset tutkimukset systemaattisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla. Teoreettinen näkökulma perustui vuorovaikutteisten innovaatioverkostojen rakentamista yliopistojen, yritysten ja valtion välille korostavaan Triple Helix -viitekehykseen. Valtion ohjaava rooli rajattiin tutkielman ulkopuolelle. Tutkimuskysymykset olivat miten teknologiansiirtoa on empiirisesti tutkittu yliopistojen ja yritysten välisenä vuorovaikutuksena, mitkä ovat yliopistojen ja yritysten väliset vuorovaikutusmuodot ja miten teknologiansiirtoa kannattaisi tutkia. Tutkimuksista koostuva aineisto hankittiin systemaattisella kirjallisuushaulla. Aineisto rajattiin teknologiansiirtoa vuorovaikutusnäkökulmasta tutkineisiin empiirisiin tutkimuksiin. Analysointimenetelmänä käytettiin sisällönanalyysiä. Tulosten perusteella teknologiansiirron tutkimisen teoreettisia lähestymistapoja olivat yrittäjyyssuuntautuneisuuteen yliopistoissa kannustava ”entrepreneurial university” -suuntaus, innovaatiot ja innovaatiojärjestelmät, tutkijoiden ominaisuudet ja sosiaalinen pääoma, vuorovaikutus- ja tiedonsiirtoprosessit, organisationaalinen oppiminen ja yliopiston teknologiansiirtopolitiikat. Teknologiansiirtoa oli tutkittu enemmän yliopisto- kuin yritysnäkökulmasta. Tutkimuksista puolet otti huomioon hiljaisen tiedon siirrettävyyden vain vuorovaikutuksen avulla. Tutkielman tuloksena tunnistettiin 34 erilaista vuorovaikutusmuotoa teknologiansiirrossa yliopistojen ja yritysten välillä. Tutkituimmat vuorovaikutusmuodot olivat patentit ja lisenssit, asiantuntija-apu ja konsultointi, epämuodolliset kontaktit ja verkostot, yliopistojen spin-off-yritykset ja sopimustutkimus. Tutkimusyhteistyötä oli tutkittu suhteellisen vähän. Teknologiansiirron tehokkuutta kannattaisi tutkia yritysnäkökulmasta selvittämällä tutkimusyhteistyön ja innovaatioiden välinen yhteys. Teknologiansiirtoa vuorovaikutusprosessina kannattaisi tutkia kaikkien siihen osallistuvien sidosryhmien näkökulmista. Teknologiansiirtoprojektien onnistumiseen vaikuttavia tekijöitä voisi selvittää vertailevien tapaustutkimusten avulla. Tiedonsiirtoprosessiin liittyvää vuorovaikutusta ei prosessina kannattaisi tutkia irrallisena ilmiönä siihen liittyvistä tiedonsiirto-olosuhteista. Vuorovaikutusmuotojen määrä suomalaisessa teknologiansiirrossa olisi tutkimisen arvoinen asia. Vuorovaikutusmuotojen lukumäärän selvittämisellä voisi arvioida yhteistyösuhteen syvyyttä yliopistojen ja yritysten välillä. The objective of this master’s thesis was twofold: first to examine the concept of customer value and its drivers and second to identify information use practices. The first part of the study represents explorative research that was carried out by examining a case company’s customer satisfaction data that was used to identify sales and technical customer service related value drivers on a detailed attribute level. This was followed by an examination of whether these attributes had been commented on in a positive or a negative light and what were the reasons why the case company had received higher or lower ratings than its competitor. As a result a classification of different sales and technical customer service related attributes was created. The results indicated that the case company has performed well, but that the results varied on the company’s business segment level. The case company’s staff, service and the benefits from a long-lasting relationship came up in a positive light whereas attitude, flexibility and reaction time came up in a negative light. The reasons for a higher or lower score in comparison to competitor varied. The results indicated that a customer’s satisfaction with the company’s performance did not always mean that the company was outperforming the competition. The second part of the study focused on customer satisfaction information use from the viewpoints of information access, dissemination and reaction. The study was conducted by running an internal survey among the case company’s staff. The results showed that information use practices varied across the company and some units or teams had taken a more proactive approach to the information use than others.

Due to the different dynamics required for organizations to serve the emerging market which contains billions of people at the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) coupled with the increasing desire for organizations to grow and be more multinational, organizations need to continually innovate. However, the tendency for large and established companies to ignore the BOP market and rather focus on existing markets, gives an indication of the existence of a vulnerability that potentially disruptive innovations from the BOP will not be recognized in good time for a counter measure. This can be deduced from the fact that good management practice advocates that managers should learn and listen to their customers. Therefore majority of the large existing companies continually focus on their main customer/market with sustaining innovations which leaves aspiring new entrants with an underserved BOP market to experiment with. With the aid of research interviews and an agent-based model (ABM) simulation, this thesis examines the attributes of BOP innovations that can qualify them as disruptive and the possibilities of tangible disruptive innovations arising from the bottom of the pyramid and their underlying drivers. The thesis Furthermore, examines the associated impact of such innovations on the future sustainability of established large companies that are operating in the developed world, particularly those with a primary focus which is targeted towards the market at the top of the pyramid (TOP). Additionally, with the use of a scenario planning model, the research provides an evaluation of the possible evolution and potential sustainability impacts that could emerge, from the interplay of innovations at the two pyramidal market levels and the chosen market focus of organizations – TOP or BOP. Using four scenario quadrants, the thesis demonstrates the resulting possibilities from the interaction between the rate of innovations and the segment focused on by organizations with disruptive era characterizing the paradigm shift quadrant. Furthermore, a mathematical model and two theoretical propositions are developed for further research. As recommendations, the thesis also extends the ambidextrous organizational theory, business model innovation and portfolio diversification as plausible recommendations to limit a catastrophic impact, resulting from disruptive innovations.

Tässä kvalitatiivisessa pro gradu -työssä tutkittiin brändin vaikutusta innovaation adoptoinnissa. Innovaationa käytettiin älypuhelinta. Päätutkimusongelmana oli selvittää kuinka brändi vaikuttaa älupuhelimen omaksuntaan. Brändin vaikutusta tutkittiin Rogersin Diffusion of Innovation -teoriasta adoptioprosessin sekä innovaation määritteiden avulla. Sosiaalisten suhteiden vaikutusta brändin valintaan sekä innovaation adoptointiin taas tutkittiin Technology Acceptance Modelin avulla. Empiirinen osio koottiin teemahaastattelun tulosten avulla. Tulosten saamiseksi tutkimuksessa haastateltiin kymmentä yliopisto-opiskelijaa. Vastaukset osoittivat brändin merkittävää vaikutusta älypuhelimen adoptoinnissa.
