Solutions to the Hospitality Industry's Labor Shortage

A shortage of labor exists in the hospitality industry, even to the point that many vacant positions go unfilled. The author discusses some solutions to the problem, including a look at retirees, working mothers, and the disabled.

Desenho e Análise de Processo de Candidatura ao P.2020: estudo de caso via CTC/GP, do IPL

Melhorar o desempenho organizacional, através do (re)desenho dos processos de negócios, é uma premente e desafiadora questão para promover a eficiência e eficácia organizacional. O presente trabalho aborda a Gestão de Processos de Negócio e conceitos que lhe estão subjacente, enquanto ferramenta ao dispor da gestão para planear, modelar, executar, analisar, controlar e melhorar o operacional do processo. Para tal, recorreu-se a um estudo de caso, realizado no Centro de Transferência e Valorização de Conhecimento e Gabinete de Projetos (CTC/GP), do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPL), referente ao processo de candidatura de projetos em co-promoção, no novo quadro comunitário. A escolha deste estudo de caso prendeu-se com o facto de o CTC/GP ser uma unidade orgânica do IPL que, entre outras atividades, articula a academia com o tecido empresarial da região de Leiria, contribuindo para a criação de uma economia de valor acrescentado, suportada por produtos exportáveis e competitivos ao nível da qualidade. Por outro lado, o processo de candidatura de projetos em co-promoção é um processo de grande rendibilidade para o instituto. A grande contribuição deste trabalho foi, por um lado, munir a equipa de um fluxograma do supra citado processo, numa ferramenta de fácil utilização e premiável às mudanças de paradigma e, por outro, apresentar várias questões de partida para investigações futuras.

Unrecognized Exodus, Unaccepted Accountability : The Looming Shortage of Principals and Vice Principals in Ontario Public School Boards (Working Paper 24)

To the apparent surprise of policy makers at the provincial and school board levels, Ontario’s public schools are about to experience a massive exodus of principals and vice principals. This report, funded by a grant from the Ontario Principals’ Council, details the scale of the retirement wave currently hitting Ontario’s public school boards. Data collected from 946 practicing school administrators suggest that the retirement rates will be almost 20 per cent higher than provincial estimates. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the pool of qualified candidates for these positions is also shrinking. Already, fewer individuals are applying for each available vacancy. The study examines the major dissatisfiers in the current role of school principal as experienced by incumbents. Interviews were also conducted with 92 individuals identified as exceptional candidates for the principalship who had opted not to follow that career path in order to determine what factors they found most important in their decision making. The report concludes with recommendations for the province, school boards and principals' organizations.

Managing Transition from Curative to Palliative: GP and Bereaved Parent Experiences

Background Children with cancer in the UK are treated in regional childhood cancer centres (RCCC). Families and health care professionals can develop close working relationships over the often-long duration of treatment. Cancer still accounts for largest numbers of childhood disease related deaths and as home is commonly the choice of location for palliative and end of life care, the child and family can face transitions both from curative to palliative care and from hospital to home. This paper reports on findings relating to these transitions from the perspectives of parents and family doctors highlighting implications for both hospital and community based health care practitioners. Aims To explore the experiences of bereaved parents and family doctors following the death of a child with cancer in the family home. Methods Ethical approval was sought and obtained. In this qualitative study one-to-one semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 18 GPs and 11 bereaved parents. The parents were those whose child had received treatment for cancer at a RCCC in the UK and who died at home, the GPs were those involved in the palliative care. Chronological comparative data analysis using grounded theory was completed. Results Cessation of contact with the RCCC when the child receives palliative care at home can be traumatic for parents. Hospital and community based health care professionals need to carefully consider how they establish, maintain and end working relationships with the child and family. Conclusions Findings from this study provide a new perspective to the effective management of transition in paediatric oncology palliative care; managing working relationships. Findings highlight the need for hospital and community based staff to identify and employ strategies that ensure working relationships with families are effectively managed prior to, during and following the child’s transition from curative to palliative care.

Advanced nursing practice : a global perspective

Aim: To review the titles, roles and scope of practice of Advanced Practice Nurses internationally.----- Background: There is a worldwide shortage of nurses but there is also an increased demand for nurses with enhanced skills who can manage a more diverse, complex and acutely ill patient population than ever before. As a result, a variety of nurses in advanced practice positions has evolved around the world. The differences in nomenclature have led to confusion over the roles, scope of practice and professional boundaries of nurses in an international context.----- Method: CINAHL, Medline, and the Cochrane database of Systematic Reviews were searched from 1987 to 2008. Information was also obtained through government health and professional organisation websites. All information in the literature regarding current and past status, and nomenclature of advanced practice nursing was considered relevant.----- Findings: There are many names for Advanced Practice Nurses, and although many of these roles are similar in their function, they can often have different titles.----- Conclusion: Advanced Practice Nurses are critical for the future, provide cost-effective care and are highly regarded by patients/clients. They will be a constant and permanent feature of future health care provision. However, clarification regarding their classification and regulation is necessary in some countries.

General practitioners’ experiences of the psychological aspects in the care of a dying patient

Objective: General practitioners (GPs) play an integral role in addressing the psychological needs of palliative care patients and their families. This qualitative study investigated psychosocial issues faced by GPs in the management of patients receiving palliative care and investigated the themes relevant to the psychosocial care of dying patients. Method: Fifteen general practitioners whose patient had been recently referred to the Mt. Olivet Palliative Home Care Services in Brisbane participated in an individual case review discussions guided by key questions within a semistructured format. These interviews focused on the psychosocial aspects of care and management of the referred patient, including aspects of the doctor/patient relationship, experience of delivering diagnosis and prognosis, addressing the psychological concerns of the patients' family, and the doctors' personal experiences, reactions, and responses. Qualitative analysis was conducted on the transcripts of these interviews. Results: The significant themes that emerged related to perceived barriers to exploration of emotional concerns, including spiritual issues, and the discussion of prognosis and dying, the perception of patients' responses/coping styles, and the GP's personal experience of the care (usually expressed in terms of identification with patient). Significance of results: The findings indicate the significant challenges facing clinicians in discussions with patients and families about death, to exploring the patient's emotional responses to terminal illness and spiritual concerns for the patient and family. These qualitative date indicate important tasks in the training and clinical support for doctors providing palliative care.
