In this work, we have successfully synthesized Au nanoparticles (NPs) in situ in PEDOT:PSS deploying a room temperature atmospheric pressure microplasma. The size of the AuNPs is a function of the gold salt precursor concentration and the plasma processing time. The Au/polymer colloids after processing remain well dispersed over a prolonged period of time. Both gold salt concentration and the plasma processing time have influence on the electrical conductivity of the dried Au/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite films. An enhanced electrical conductivity of the Au/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite films has been attributed to (i) the interfacial ligand formation between the S atoms in PEDOT:PSS molecules and the Au surface and (ii) charge transfer from the AuNPs to the holes of PEDOT:PSS molecules.

Dimethylacetals of ketones; cyclohexanone, acetophenone, and benzophenone have been prepared by reacting ketones with methanol under mild reaction conditions. Large pore zeolites (H-Y and its rare earth metal, Ce3+, La3+, and RE3+ modified forms), and mesoporous clay (K-10 montmorillonite and its cerium exchanged counterpart) with regular pore structure, silica and silica-alumina have been used as catalysts. Clay catalysts are found to be much more active than zeolites, thanks to slightly bigger pore size. The nature of the pores of the solid acid catalysts determine acetalization efficiency of a particular catalyst. As evidenced by the reaction time studies, the catalyst decay is greater over the zeolites than over the clays. Carrying out the reaction with ketones of different molecular sizes it is shown that K-10 clays and rare earth exchanged H-Y zeolites are promising environmentally friendly catalysts for their use in the production fine chemicals.

Rare earth exchanged Na–Y zeolites, H-mordenite, K-10 montmorillonite clay and amorphous silica-alumina were effectively employed for the continuous synthesis of nitriles. Dehydration of benzaldoxime and 4-methoxybenzaldoxime were carried out on these catalysts at 473 K. Benzonitrile (dehydration product) was obtained in near quantitative yield with benzaldoxime whereas; 4-methoxybenzaldoxime produces both Beckmann rearrangement (4-methoxyphenylformamide) as well as dehydration products (4-methoxy benzonitrile) in quantitative yields. The production of benzonitrile was near quantitative under heterogeneous reaction conditions. The optimal protocol allows nitriles to be synthesized in good yields through the dehydration of aldoximes. Time on stream (TOS) studies show decline in the activity of the catalysts due to neutralization of acid sites by the basic reactant and product molecules and water formed during the dehydration of aldoximes.

the thesis entitled “STUDIES ON DEVELOPING A FACILE ROUTE FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF HIGHLY SUBSTITUTED QUINOLINE AND INDOLE DERIVATIVES” portrays our attempt to revisit the mechanism of 1,3- dipolar additions with a view to establishing whether it follows a concerted pathway or a stepwise reaction sequence through the formation of a zwitterionic intermediate, which will definitely contribute to the better use of this technique. Furthermore, we propose to develop novel routes for the synthesis of quinoline and indole derivatives with predefined substitution pattern. The thesis is devided into four chapters

A series of novel naphthyridine derivatives 3 and 4 was prepared from substituted pyridine 2 and ketones using ZnCl2 as catalyst under microwave irradiation conditions. All the compounds were evaluated for AChE inhibitory activity and promising compounds 3d, 3e, 4b, and 4g was identified. Representative compounds 3d and 3e were found to show insignificant THLE-2 liver cell viability/toxicity. The binding mode between X-ray crystal structure of human AChE and compounds was studied using molecular docking method and fitness scores were found to be in good correlation with the activity data.

Stirring of N-(2-carboxybenzoyl) anthranilic acid with anilines and amines such as p-toluidine, benzylamine, methyl esters of Leu, Phe, Ile and Val in presence of DCC produces N- 2 substituted 3-phenyliminoisoindolinones in very good yields. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and solution phase NMR and CD studies reveal that the 3-phenyliminoisoindolinone moiety is a turn-inducing scaffold which should be useful for reverse-turn mimetics.

Three new linear trinuclear nickel(II) complexes, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (1) (OAc = acetate, CH3COO-), [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OBz)(2)] (2) (OBz=benzoate, PhCOO-) and [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OCn)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] (4) (OCn = cinnamate, PhCH=CHCOO-), H(2)salpen = tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The choice of solvent for growing single crystal was made by inspecting the morphology of the initially obtained solids with the help of SEM study. The magnetic properties of a closely related complex, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OPh)(2)(EtOH)] (3) (OPh = phenyl acetate, PhCH2COO-) whose structure and solution properties have been reported recently, has also been studied here. The structural analyses reveal that both phenoxo and carboxylate bridging are present in all the complexes and the three Ni(II) atoms remain in linear disposition. Although the Schiff base ligand and the syn-syn bridging bidentate mode of the carboxylate group remain the same in complexes 1-4, the change of alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylates brings about systematic variations between six- and five-coordination in the geometry of the terminal Ni(II) centres of the trinuclear units. The steric demand as well as hydrophobic nature of the alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylate is found to play a crucial role in the tuning of the geometry. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complexes 1-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(1), -4.6(1). -3.2(1) and -2.8(1) cm(-1) in 1-4, respectively). Calculations of the zero-field splitting parameter indicate that the values of D for complexes 1-4 are in the high range (D = +9.1(2), +14.2(2), +9.8(2) and +8.6(1) cm(-1) for 1-4, respectively). The highest D value of +14.2(2) and +9.8(2) cm(-1) for complexes 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with the pentacoordinated geometry of the two terminal nickel(II) ions in 2 and one terminal nickel(II) ion in 3. MoritaBaylisHillman derivatives have been extensively investigated as intermediates in the preparation of important classes of compounds. However, there are intrinsic limitations regarding the structure of the Michael electrophile acceptors, the aldehydes, and the catalysts. Therefore, this transformation has several drawbacks, including, for example, its long reaction times. Herein we present a simple, general, fast, and high-yielding protocol for the one-pot synthesis of MoritaBaylisHillman derivatives. Our approach is driven by a lithium selenolate Michael/aldol operation with concomitant O-functionalization/selenoxide elimination cascade sequences.

Herein we demonstrate a facile template-free sonochemical strategy to synthesize mesoporous g-C3N4 with a high surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity. The TEM and nitrogen adsorption–desorption studies confirm mesoporous structure in g-C3N4 body. The photocatalytic activity of mesoporous g-C3N4 is almost 5.5 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4 under visible-light irradiation. The high photocatalytic performance of the mesoporous g-C3N4 was attributed to the much higher specific surface area, efficient adsorption ability and the unique interfacial mesoporous structure which can favour the absorption of light and separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs more effectively. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was discussed by the radicals and holes trapping experiments. Interestingly, the synthesized mesoporous g-C3N4 possesses high reusability. Hence the mesoporous g-C3N4 can be a promising photocatalytic material for practical applications in water splitting as well as environmental remediation.

Hydrogels are hydrophilic, three dimensional polymers that imbibe large quantities of water while remaining insoluble in aqueous solutions due to chemical or physical cross-linking. The polymers swell in water or biological fluids, immobilizing the bioactive agent, leading to drug release in a well-defined specific manner. Thus the hydrogels’ elastic properties, swellability and biocompatibility make them excellent formulations for drug delivery. Currently, many drug potencies and therapeutic effects are limited or otherwise reduced because of the partial degradation that occurs before the administered drug reaches the desired site of action. On the other hand, sustained release medications release drugs continually, rather than providing relief of symptoms and protection solely when necessary. In fact, it would be much better if drugs could be administered in a manner that precisely matches physiological needs at desired times and at the desired site (site specific targeting). There is therefore an unmet need to develop controlled drug delivery systems especially for delivery of peptide and protein bound drugs. The purpose of this project is to produce hydrogels for structural drug delivery and time-dependent sustained release of drugs (bioactive agents). We use an innovative polymerisation strategy based on native chemical ligation (NCL) to covalently cross-link polymers to form hydrogels. When mixed in aqueous solution, four armed (polyethylene glycol) amine (PEG-4A) end functionalised with thioester and four branched Nterminal cysteine peptide dendrimers spontaneously conjugated to produce biomimetic hydrogels. These hydrogels showed superior resistance to shear stress compared to an equivalent PEG macromonomer system and were shown to be proteolytically degradable with concomitant release of a model payload molecule. This is the first report of a peptide dendrimers/PEG macromonomer approach to hydrogel production and opens up the prospect of facile hydrogel synthesis together with tailored payload release.

A nanocomposite of Mn3O4 wrapped in graphene sheets (GSs) was successfully synthesized via a facile, effective, energy-saving, and scalable microwave hydrothermal technique. The morphology and microstructures of the fabricated GS–Mn3O4 nanocomposite were characterized using various techniques. The results indicate that the particle size of the Mn3O4 particles in the nanocomposite markedly decreased to nearly 20 nm, significantly smaller than that for the bare Mn3O4. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated a high specific capacity of more than 900 mA h g−1 at 40 mA g−1, and excellent cycling stability with no capacity decay can be observed up to 50 cycles. All of these properties are also interpreted by experimental studies and theoretical calculations.
