Non-intrusive methods of diagnosis, such as spectral analysis of the radiation emitted by the system, have been used as a viable alternative for determining the temperature of combustion systems. Among them, the determination of temperature by natural emission spectroscopy has the advantage of requiring relatively simple experimental devices. Once Chemiluminescent species are formed directly in the excited state, the collection and recording of radiation emission spectrum is enough to determine the temperature (CARINHANA, 2008). In this study we used the process of making direct comparisons between the experimental spectra obtained in the laboratory from the plasma of alcohol, and the theoretical spectra plotted from a computer program developed at the IEAv. The objective was to establish a fast and reliable method to measure the rotational temperature of the radical C2*. The results showed that the temperature of the plasma, which in turn can be taken as the rotational temperature of the system, is proportional to the pressure. The temperature values ranged from ca. 2300 ~ 2500 K at a pressure of 19 mmHg to 3100 ~ 3500 K for the pressure of 46 mmHg. The temperature values are somewhat smaller when we consider the theoretical spectrum as a Lorentzian curve. The overlap of the spectra was better when using the profile curve, but still were not exactly superimposed. The solution to improve the overlap of the theoretical with the experimental spectra is the use of a curve that has the convolution of two profiles analyzed: Lorentzian and Gaussian. This curve is called the Voigt profile, which will also be implemented by programmers and studied in a next work

The aim of this work was the development a computer code for simulation and analysis of atomic spectra from databases constructed from the literature. There were created four routines that can be useful for spectroscopic studies in the atomic processes of laser isotope separation. In the first routine, Possible Transitions, the program checks the possible electron transitions from an energy level of the atom present in the database considering the selection rules for an electric dipole transition. The second routine, Locator Transitions, checks the possible electronic transitions within a user-specified spectral region. The routine Spectra Simulator creates simulated spectra using the graphical application gnuplot through lorentzian curve and finally, the routine Electronic Temperature determines the temperature of electronic excitation of the atom, thought the Boltzmann Plot Method. To test the reliability of the program there were obtained experimental emission spectra of a hollow cathode discharge of dysprosium and argon as a buffer gas. The hollow cathode discharge has been subjected to different values of operating currents and pressure of inert gas. The spectra obtained were treated with the assistance of program routines developed (Transition Locator and Spectra Simulator) and temperatures electronic excitation of the atoms of dysprosium in the different discharge conditions were calculated (routine Electronic Temperature). The results showed that the electronic excitation temperature of the neutral dysprosium atoms in the hollow cathode discharge increases with increasing current applied to the cathode and also by increasing the gas pressure buffer. Context. Detections of molecular lines, mainly from H-2 and CO, reveal molecular material in planetary nebulae. Observations of a variety of molecules suggest that the molecular composition in these objects differs from that found in interstellar clouds or in circumstellar envelopes. The success of the models, which are mostly devoted to explain molecular densities in specific planetary nebulae, is still partial however. Aims. The present study aims at identifying the influence of stellar and nebular properties on the molecular composition of planetary nebulae by means of chemical models. A comparison of theoretical results with those derived from the observations may provide clues to the conditions that favor the presence of a particular molecule. Methods. A self-consistent photoionization numerical code was adapted to simulate cold molecular regions beyond the ionized zone. The code was used to obtain a grid of models and the resulting column densities are compared with those inferred from observations. Results. Our models show that the inclusion of an incident flux of X-rays is required to explain the molecular composition derived for planetary nebulae. We also obtain a more accurate relation for the N(CO)/N(H-2) ratio in these objects. Molecular masses obtained by previous works in the literature were then recalculated, showing that these masses can be underestimated by up to three orders of magnitude. We conclude that the problem of the missing mass in planetary nebulae can be solved by a more accurate calculation of the molecular mass.

Two novel coordination polymers with the formula {[Ln(2)(2,5-tdc)(3)(dmso)(2)].H2O}(n) (Ln = Tb(III) for (1) and Dy(III) for (2)), (2,5-tdc(2-) = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate and dmso = dimethylsulfoxide) have been synthesized by the diffusion method and characterized by thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Structure analysis reveals that 2,5-tdc(2-) play a versatile role toward different lanthanide ions to form three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in which the lanthanides ions are heptacoordinated. Photophysical properties were studied using excitation and emission spectra, where the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions D-5(4 ->) F-7(J) (J= 6, 5, 4 and 3) for (1) and (F9/2 -> HJ)-F-4-H-6 (J = 15/2, 13/2 and 11/2) for (2), indicating that 2,5-tdc(2-) is a good sensitizer. In this paper, a broad combined orange-red emission from Eu2+- and Eu3+-doped low-silica calcium aluminosilicate (LSCAS) glass is reported. Spectroscopic results demonstrate that it is possible to tune the emission wavelength by changing the excitation wavelength in the UV-Vis region. The color coordinates for the emission spectra were calculated, and using the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage 1931 and 1976 chromatic diagrams, it is possible to note that they are dependent on the excitation wavelength. In addition, the (u', v') color coordinates for the investigated LSCAS samples are close to the Planckian spectrum in the cold region between 2000 and 2600K. Our results show that the Eu:LSCAS system can be used in a white light phosphor when mixed in aggregate with phosphors using green-yellow luminescent ions. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

In this work, we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the energy transfer mechanism in two isotypical 2D coordination polymers, (infinity)[(Tb1-xEux)(DPA)(HDPA)], where H(2)DPA is pyridine 2,6-dicarboxylic acid and x = 0.05 or 0.50. Emission spectra of (infinity)[(Tb0.95Eu0.05)(DPA)(HDPA)] and (infinity)[(Tb0.5Eu0.5)(DPA)(HDPA)], (I) and (2), show that the high quenching effect on Tb3+ emission caused by Eu3+ ion indicates an efficient Tb3+-> Eu3+ energy transfer (ET). The k(ET) of Tb3+-> Eu3+ ET and rise rates (k(r)) of Eu3+ as a function of temperature for (1) are on the same order of magnitude, indicating that the sensitization of the Eu3+5D0 level is highly fed by ET from the D-5(4) level of Tb3+ ion. The eta(ET) and R-0 values vary in the 67-79% and 7.15 to 7.93 angstrom ranges. Hence, Tb3+ is enabled to transfer efficiently to Eu3+ that can occupy the possible sites at 6.32 and 6.75 angstrom. For (2), the ET processes occur on average with eta(ET) and R-0 of 97% and 31 angstrom, respectively. Consequently, Tb3+ ion is enabled to transfer energy to Eu3+ localized at different layers. The theoretical model developed by Malta was implemented aiming to insert more insights about the dominant mechanisms involved in the ET between lanthanides ions. Calculated single Tb3+-> Eu3+ ETs are three orders of magnitude inferior to those experimentally; however, it can be explained by the theoretical model that does not consider the role of phonon assistance in the Ln(3+)-> Ln(3+) ET processes. In addition, the Tb3+-> Eu3+ ET processes are predominantly governed by dipole-dipole (d-d) and dipole-quadrupole (d-q) mechanisms.

The complex formed by the tetracycline (TC) molecule with the Mg ion is able to prevent the replication of the genetic material in the bacterial ribosome, making an excellent antibiotic. In general, the absorption and emission spectra of TC are very sensitive to the host ions and the pH of the solvent that the set is immersed. However, the theoretical absorption spectrum available in the literature is scarce and limited to simple models that do not consider the fluctuations of the liquid. Our aim is to obtain the electronic absorption spectrum of TC and the complex Mg:TC in the ratio 1:1 and 2:1. Moreover, we analyze the changes in intensity and shifts of the bands in the systems listed. We performed the simulation using the classical Monte Carlo technique with the Lennard-Jones plus Coulomb potential applied to each atom of the both TC molecule and the Mg:TC complexes in water. The electronic absorption spectrum was obtained from the time-dependent density functional theory using different solvent models. In general, we obtained a good qualitative description of the spectra when compared with the experimental results. The Mg atom shifts the first band by 4 nm in our models, in excellent agreement to the experimental result of 4 nm. The second absorption band is found here to be useful for the characterization of the position where the ion attaches to the TC.

The resistance to photodegradation of poly [(2-methoxy-5-n-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene] (OC1OC6-PPV) films was significantly enhanced by the use of poly(vinyl alcohol) 99% hydrolyzed as protective coating. The deposition of poly(vinyl alcohol) onto OC1OC6-PPV films did not affect the absorption and the emission spectra of the luminescent polymer. The protected film showed 5% drop on the absorbance at 500nm after 270 hours of light exposure while the unprotected film completely degraded in the same conditions. The conductivity of the protected film remained stable (around 7 × 10-10 S/m) while the value for the unprotected one dropped around two orders of magnitude after 100 hours of light exposure.

Die Doktorarbeit gliedert sich in zwei Abschnitte. Das erste Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit den hyperverzweigten Polyphenylenen. Es wurden Untersuchungen des Molekulargewichts in Abhängigkeit von der Monomerkonzentration und der Reaktionszeit durchgeführt. Die synthetisierten Polymere haben große Polydispersitäten, die durch fraktioniertes Fällen herabgesetzt werden können. Die Funktionalisierung der hyperverzweigten Polyphenylene mit unterschiedlichen Methoden führt zu verschiedenen Funktionen auf der Oberfläche der Polymere. Die chlormethylierten hyperverzweigen Polymere können als Makroinitiator für den Aufbau von Kern-Schale-Systemen genutzt werden. Mit Hilfe der ATRP-Polymerisation wurde Methylmethacrylat anpolymerisiert. Als Charakterisierungsmethode zur Bestimmung des freien Volumens findet die Positronenauslöschungsspektroskopie Anwendung. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit stehen die Synthese und Charakterisierung von redoxaktiven Dendrimeren mit Triphenylamin- bzw. Naphthalinkern im Mittelpunkt. Den Einfluß der Dendrimerhülle auf die Redoxaktivität zeigen cyclovoltammetrische Untersuchungen. Die Zunahme der dendritischen Hülle führt zu einer Abschirmung des Redoxzentrums gegen die Elektrode und damit zu einer Inhibierung des Elektronentransfers. Das spiegelt sich in der Abnahme der Geschwindigkeitskonstanten sowie in der Ausdehnung der cyclovoltammetrischen Kurve wieder. Die Funktionalisierung der Triphenylamin-Dendrimere mit Chromophoren auf der Oberfläche führt zu einer Änderung der optische Eigenschaften, die mit Hilfe von Absorptions- und Emissionsmessungen untersucht wurden.

Polystyrene latex particles modified at the surface with different hydrophilic functional groups were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization and applied to control the crystallization of zinc oxide in aqueous medium. The effects of both latex structure and concentration on the crystal growth, morphology, crystalline structure, and properties of the resulting zinc oxide were analyzed. Depending on the latex additive used, micro- and submicrosized crystals with a broad variety of morphologies were obtained. Among the studied latexes, the carboxyl-derived particles were shown to be a convenient system for further quantitative investigations. In this case, as the additive concentration increases, the aspect ratio of the crystals decreases systematically. Latex particles are assumed to adsorb preferentially onto the fast growing {001} faces of ZnO, interacting with the growth centers and reducing the growth rate in [001]. When zinc oxide is precipitated in the presence of latex, the polymer particles become incorporated into the growing crystals and polymer–inorganic hybrid materials are obtained. These materials are composed of an inorganic and largely undisturbed crystalline matrix in which organic latex particles are embedded. Increasing amounts of latex become incorporated into the growing crystals at increasing overall concentration in the crystallizing system. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra were measured to obtain information on defect centers. Emission spectra of all samples showed a narrow UV peak and a broad band in the green-yellow spectral region. The former emission is attributed to exciton recombination, whereas the latter seems to be related with deep-level donors. Latex appears to be a quencher of the visible emission of zinc oxide. Thus, compared to pure zincite, ZnO–latex hybrid materials show a significantly lower PL intensity in the visible range of the spectrum. Under continuous photoexcitation, a noticeable dynamic behavior of the PL is observed, which can be related to a photodesorption of adsorbed oxygen. These surface-adsorbed oxygen species seem to play a crucial role for the optical properties of the materials and may mediate the tunneling of electrons from the conduction band to preexisting deep-level traps, probably related to intrinsic defects (oxygen vacancies or interstitial zinc). The polymer particles can block the sites where oxygen adsorbs, and the disappearance of the “electron-shuttle” species leads to the observed quenching of the visible emission. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) provided additional information about crystal defects with unpaired electrons. Spectra of all samples exhibit a single signal at g ≈ 1.96, typical for shallow donors. Contrary to the results of other authors, no correlation was possible between the EPR signal and the visible range of PL spectra, which suggests that centers responsible for the visible emission and the EPR signal are different.
