OBJETIVO: Avaliar o estado nutricional de crianças residentes em Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, de base domiciliar, através de um inquérito antropométrico-social, com amostra de 652 crianças de 0 a 59 meses de idade. RESULTADOS: Foram encontradas baixas prevalências de déficts nutricionais, com exceção para déficits de altura/idade, tendo início ainda no primeiro ano de vida. O estado nutricional mostrou-se influenciado pelas condições socioeconômicas, especialmente a renda per capita familiar. Quase a totalidade das crianças iniciaram a amamentação, mas o desmame teve início ainda no primeiro mês. O aleitamento materno exclusivo é de curta duração, com oferta precoce de substitutos do leite materno. A análise da assistência materno-infantil apresentou boa cobertura de pré-natal, mas deficiente no acompanhamento da saúde infantil em todas as faixas de renda. CONCLUSÕES: Identificou-se a necessidade de realizar alterações na abordagem das ações preventivas de vigilância da situação nutricional das crianças, para que haja condições de desenvolver ações diferenciadas no campo nutricional.

A utilização de placas de OSB – Oriented Strand Board está em franca expansão no território nacional e parece ser uma alternativa ecológica e económica aos painéis de derivados de madeira normalmente usados. O OSB é obtido num processo de fabrico resultante da interacção de diversas variáveis, que conferem aos painéis uma vasta gama de aplicações estruturais ou não estruturais (paredes exteriores e interiores, pavimentos, coberturas, componentes de vigas, cofragens, embalagens, móveis, elementos de decoração, etc.). Neste trabalho pretendeu-se investigar, através de pesquisa bibliográfica as características das placas OSB assim como seu processo de fabrico e condicionantes existentes no seu decurso. Em seguida estas foram comparadas com os seus principais concorrentes, o contraplacado e o aglomerado de madeira e cimento. O trabalho experimental realizado teve como objectivo analisar as propriedades de OSB, proveniente do mercado nacional, de acordo com a EN 300:2006 e com os dados recolhidos na pesquisa bibliográfica. Foram executados ensaios de flexão (EN 310:2002), inchamento em espessura (EN 317:2002) e ensaios de flexão após envelhecimento (EN 321:2010). Concluiu-se que o OSB é um material com algumas características de destaque, no entanto a substituição de outros derivados de madeira por este deve ser acompanhada por estudos, principalmente em ambientes húmidos. É importante realçar que este possui modelos com características específicas para determinadas utilizações e ambientes que possibilitam uma optimização do seu comportamento, no entanto, nos ensaios realizados apenas foi utilizado um modelo base de OSB.

Neste relatório descreve-se o trabalho desenvolvido no âmbito do estágio curricular relativamente ao acompanhamento da execução de instalações técnicas e acabamentos na construção de um edifício, com a finalidade de conclusão do curso de Mestrado em Engenharia Civil. O estágio, com duração de quatro meses, desenrolou-se entre Fevereiro e Junho de 2011 na empresa Obriverca. Consistiu no acompanhamento da obra do “Condomínio Oriente” inserida no “Multiusos do Oriente”, em construção na freguesia de Moscavide, concelho de Loures, sendo o orientador do estágio na empresa, o Eng.º Luís Laborinho, Director da Obra em causa. Tendo como objectivos primordiais do estágio curricular a consolidação das matérias e temas abordados na vertente académica, assim como o contacto com a realidade do mundo laboral, estes foram obtidos realizando um acompanhamento regular das frentes de trabalho referentes à execução das instalações técnicas e acabamentos, focando a atenção em duas fases distintas: inicialmente na execução da rede de distribuição de águas; rede de drenagem predial; aquecimento, ventilação e ar condicionado; instalações eléctricas e rede de combate a incêndios; na execução dos acabamentos em paredes exteriores e interiores, pavimentos e tectos.

Despite a massive expansion of education in Portugal, since the 1970’s, educational attainment of the adult population in the country remains low. The numbers of working-age people in some form of continuing education are among the lowest, according to the OECD and EU-27 statistics. Technological Schools(TS), initially created in the 1990’s, under the umbrella of the Ministry of Economy in partnership with industry and industrial associations, aimed to prepare qualified staff for industries and services in the country, particularly in the engineering sector, through the provision of post secondary non-university programmes of studies, the CET (Technological Specialization Courses). Successful CET students are awarded a DET(Diploma of Technological Specialization), which corresponds to Vocational Qualification level IV of the EU, according to the latest alteration (2005) of the Education Systems Act (introduced in 1986). In this, CET’s are also clearly defined as one of the routes for access to Higher Education (HE), in Portugal. The PRILHE (Promoting Reflective and Independent Learning in Higher Education) multinational project, funded by the European Socrates Grundtvig Programme, aimed to identify the learning processes which enable adult students in higher education to become autonomous reflective learners and search best practices to support these learning processes. During this research, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to determine how students organise their studies and develop their learning skills. The Portuguese partner in the project’ consortium used a two case studies approach, one with students of Higher Education Institutions and other with students of TS. This paper only applies to students of TS, as these have a predominant bias towards engineering. Results show that student motivation and professional teaching support contribute equally to the development of an autonomous and reflective approach to learning in adult students; this is essential for success in a knowledge economy, where lifelong learning is the key to continuous employment.

Lifelong learning (LLL) has received increasing attention in recent years. It implies that learning should take place at all stages of the “life cycle and it should be life-wide, that is embedded in all life contexts from the school to the work place, the home and the community” (Green, 2002, p.613). The ‘learning society’, is the vision of a society where there are recognized opportunities for learning for every person, wherever they are and however old they happen to be. Globalization and the rise of new information technologies are some of the driving forces that cause depreciation of specialised competences. This happens very quickly in terms of economic value; consequently, workers of all skills levels, during their working life, must have the opportunity to update “their technical skills and enhance general skills to keep pace with continuous technological change and new job requirements” (Fahr, 2005, p. 75). It is in this context that LLL tops the policy agenda of international bodies, national governments and non-governmental organizations, in the field of education and training, to justify the need for LLL opportunities for the population as they face contemporary employability challenges. It is in this context that the requirement and interest to analyse the behaviour patterns of adult learners has developed over the last few years

Coordination of apical constriction in epithelial sheets is a fundamental process during embryogenesis. Here, we show that DRhoGEF2 is a key regulator of apical pulsation and constriction of amnioserosal cells during Drosophila dorsal closure. Amnioserosal cells mutant for DRhoGEF2 exhibit a consistent decrease in amnioserosa pulsations whereas overexpression of DRhoGEF2 in this tissue leads to an increase in the contraction time of pulsations. We probed the physical properties of the amnioserosa to show that the average tension in DRhoGEF2 mutant cells is lower than wild-type and that overexpression of DRhoGEF2 results in a tissue that is more solid-like than wild-type. We also observe that in the DRhoGEF2 overexpressing cells there is a dramatic increase of apical actomyosin coalescence that can contribute to the generation of more contractile forces, leading to amnioserosal cells with smaller apical surface than wild-type. Conversely, in DRhoGEF2 mutants, the apical actomyosin coalescence is impaired. These results identify DRhoGEF2 as an upstream regulator of the actomyosin contractile machinery that drives amnioserosa cells pulsations and apical constriction.

Deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, is the most fundamental aspect of life but present day scientific knowledge has merely scratched the surface of the problem posed by its decoding. While experimental methods provide insightful clues, the adoption of analysis tools supported by the formalism of mathematics will lead to a systematic and solid build-up of knowledge. This paper studies human DNA from the perspective of system dynamics. By associating entropy and the Fourier transform, several global properties of the code are revealed. The fractional order characteristics emerge as a natural consequence of the information content. These properties constitute a small piece of scientific knowledge that will support further efforts towards the final aim of establishing a comprehensive theory of the phenomena involved in life.

This paper analyzes DNA information using entropy and phase plane concepts. First, the DNA code is converted into a numerical format by means of histograms that capture DNA sequence length ranging from one up to ten bases. This strategy measures dynamical evolutions from 4 up to 410 signal states. The resulting histograms are analyzed using three distinct entropy formulations namely the Shannon, Rényie and Tsallis definitions. Charts of entropy versus sequence length are applied to a set of twenty four species, characterizing 486 chromosomes. The information is synthesized and visualized by adapting phase plane concepts leading to a categorical representation of chromosomes and species.

This paper addresses the DNA code analysis in the perspective of dynamics and fractional calculus. Several mathematical tools are selected to establish a quantitative method without distorting the alphabet represented by the sequence of DNA bases. The association of Gray code, Fourier transform and fractional calculus leads to a categorical representation of species and chromosomes.

This paper studies the human DNA in the perspective of signal processing. Six wavelets are tested for analyzing the information content of the human DNA. By adopting real Shannon wavelet several fundamental properties of the code are revealed. A quantitative comparison of the chromosomes and visualization through multidimensional and dendograms is developed.
