CaSnO3 was synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, using different precursor salts as (CH3COO)(2)Ca. H2O, Ca(NO3)(2). 4H(2)O, CaCl2. 2H(2)O and CaCO3, leading to different results. Powder precursor was characterized using thermal analysis. Depending on the precursor different thermal behaviors were obtained. Results also indicate the formation of carbonates, confirmed by IR spectra. After calcination and characterization by XRD, the formation of perovskite as single phase was only identified when calcium acetate was used as precursor. For other precursors, tin oxide was observed as secondary phase.

The efficiency of different methods for the decontamination of glassware used for the analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was tested using reported procedures as well as new ones proposed in this work. A Fenton solution bath (1.0 mmol L-1 Fe2+ and 100 mmol L-1 H2O2) for 1 h or for 30 min employing UV irradiation showed to combine simplicity, low cost and high efficiency. Using the optimized cleaning procedure, the DOC for stored UV-irradiated ultrapure water reached concentrations below the limit of detection (0.19 mu mol C L-1). Filtered (0.7 mu m) rain samples maintained the DOC integrity for at least 7 days when stored at 4 degrees C. The volatile organic carbon (VOC) fraction in the rain samples collected at two sites in São Paulo state (Brazil) ranged from 0% to 56% of their total DOC content. Although these high-VOC concentrations may be derived from the large use of ethanol fuel in Brazil, our results showed that when using the high-temperature catalytic oxidation technique, it is essential to measure DOC rather than non-purgeble organic carbon to estimate organic carbon, since rainwater composition can be quite variable, both geographically and temporally. Electrodes of RhxTi(1-x) O-y nominal composition were prepared by thermal decomposition of the chloride or nitrate precursor salts dissolved in strongly acidic medium and applied by brush to both sides of a Tidegrees support. A systematic study of the influence of calcination temperature and time as well as oxygen flux was conducted. The coatings were characterised by SEM, EDAX, XRD, open circuit potential measurements and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Visible-ultraviolet spectrophotometry was employed to identify the chemical form of the precursor in solution while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the decomposition temperature ranges. Optimisation of the coating preparation parameters showed coatings obtained from [Rh(H2O)(6)](NO3)(3) precursor dissolved in HNO3 1:2 (v/v) and fired at 430 degreesC for 2 h in a 5 1 min (-1) oxygen stream-furnished stable electrodes having the highest electrochemically active surface area. The procedure for formaldehyde analysis recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the Chromotropic acid spectrophotometric method, which is the one that uses concentrated sulphuric acid. In the present study the oxidation step associated with the aforementioned method for formaldehyde determination was investigated. Experimental evidence has been obtained indicating that when concentrated H2SO4 (18 mol l(-1)) is used (as in the NIOSH procedure) that acid is the oxidizing agent. on the other hand, oxidation through dissolved oxygen takes place when concentrated H2SO4 is replaced by concentrated hydrochloric (12 mol l(-1)) and phosphoric (14.7 mol l(-1)) acids as well as by diluted H2SO4 (9.4 mol l(-1)). Based on investigations concerning the oxidation step, a modified procedure was devised, in which the use of the potentially hazardous and corrosive concentrated H2SO4 was eliminated and advantageously replaced by a less harmful mixture of HCl and H2O2. This paper describes the results of a study on groundwaters from Tubarao Group at the Parana sedimentary basin, São Paulo State, Brazil. The purpose of this study was to integrate chemical and U-isotopes data in order to evaluate the models for quantifying different relative volumes of mixing waters in a resultant water. Despite it was possible to generate a typical triangle involving U-238 and its daughter U-234, the U-isotopes model failed to interpret the major hydrochemical facies observed in the studied localities.

Alkaline metal doped organic - inorganic hybrids have potential applications in the field of portable energy sources. Attractive sol - gel derived urea cross-linked polyether, siloxane - PPO ( poly( propylene oxide)) hybrids doped with sodium salts ( NaClO4 and NaBF4) were examined by multi-spectroscopic approach that includes complex impedance, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Si-29 and Na-23 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR/MAS), Na K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and Raman spectroscopies. The goals of this work were to determine which cation coordinating site of the host matrix ( ether oxygen atoms or carbonyl oxygen atoms) is active in each of the materials analyzed, its influence on the nanostructure of the samples and its relation with the thermal and electrical properties. The main conclusion derived from this study is that the NaBF4 salt has a much lower solubility in the hybrid matrix than the NaClO4 salt. Furthermore, the addition of a large amount of salt plays a major role in the hybrid nanostructure and electrical properties, modifying the PPO chain conformation, weakening or breaking the hydrogen bond of the polyether - urea associations and changing the polycondensation and aggregation processes involving the siloxane species.

Based on dynamic rheological measurements, sucrose, glycerol and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) prevented egg yolk gelation at concentrations of 2% and higher, These additives showed improved cryoprotectant effects as their concentrations were increased, Sodium chloride (NaCl) at higher than 2% also prevented gelation but at 10%, it caused a considerable increase in viscosity of unfrozen yolk, Calcium chloride (CaCl2) showed an opposite effect, promoting protein coagulation before freezing, Samples with 2% CaCl2 gelled completely after 36h at -24 degrees C, Before freezing, potassium chloride (KCl) in the range 2-10% had an effect similar to that of NaCl, However, after freezing its effect changed, Yolk with 2% KCl, frozen 36h at -24 degrees C, showed very elastic behavior.

Rheological studies were carried out in the fermentation broth of a polysaccharide-producing microorganism free of soil. This microorganism was designated 4B. The bacteria 4B was inoculated in the fermentation broth, which consisted of a carbon source and mineral salts, and it was incubated in a rotating agitator at 30 degreesC for 72 h at 210 rpm. A rheometer of concentric cylinders equipped with a thermostatic bath was used and the readings were taken at 25 degreesC. A study was made of the influence of the fermentation time and the readings were made after 24, 48 and 72 h of incubation, using, separately, sucrose and glucose as carbon sources. The influence of the salt concentrations was determined in each carbon source; the salts used were NaCl, KCl and CaCl2 in the concentrations of 0.4%, 1.0%, 2.0% and 3.0%. It was observed that the fermentation broth behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid and it presents pseudoplastic behaviour. Calculations were made of the flow behaviour index (n) and the consistency index (k) of the samples after 24, 48 and 72 h of fermentation, and it was observed that the 72 h sample presented higher k and consequently higher apparent viscosity. of the carbon sources used, the sucrose presented higher viscous broths after 24 and 48 h, and the glucose after 72 h of fermentation. With relation to the effect of the addition of salts, the CaCl2 presented a higher influence on the viscosity of the fermentation broths. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Groundwater samples were collected for several months in boreholes drilled at Morro do Ferro, a thorium and rare earth deposit located on the Poços de Caldas Plateau, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. An aquifer system has developed in the weathered mantle due to in situ intense alteration. The weathered zone includes a thick argillaceous laterite greater than 100 m thick. The U content and 324U/238U activity ratio were measured in the groundwater samples and in spoil samples of a borehole drilled in the ore body. Some possible mechanisms related to the mobilization of uranium are considered such as complexation with humic substances and adsorption by clays. © 1989.

In industrial processes using aqueous solutions, corrosion of metal surfaces may occur at various locations. Much of the damage to steam generators and boilers is caused by corrosion. Dissolved oxygen in water is one of the most potent corrosion-causing factors, and therefore oxygen should be eliminated from steam-generating systems' feedwater. Chemical reduction, by reagents such as hydrazine or organic compounds, generally is used for the deoxygenation of water. This article reviews the major oxygen scavengers currently available.

This study was conducted to observe the rat subcutaneous connective tissue reaction to implanted dentin tubes that were filled with mineral trioxide aggregate, Sealapex, Calciobiotic Root Canal Sealer (CRCS), Sealer 26, and the experimental material, Sealer Plus. The animals were sacrificed after 7 and 30 days, and the specimens were prepared for histological analysis after serial sections with a hard-tissue microtome. The undecalcified sections were examined with polarized light after staining according to the Von Kossa technique for calcium. At the tube openings, there were Von Kossa-positive granules that were birefringent to polarized light. Next to these granulations, there was irregular tissue, like a bridge, that was Von Kossa-positive. The dentin walls of the tubes exhibited a structure highly birefringent to polarized light, usually like a layer, in the tubules. These results were observed with all the studied materials, except the CRCS, which didn't exhibit any kind of mineralized structure. The results suggest that among the materials studied, the CRCS could have the least possibility of encouraging hard tissue deposition.
