The syntheses of the complexes formulated as SnMe2Cl2(Ad)2 (I), SnMe2Cl2(Ado)2 (II), SnMe2Cl2- (9-MeAd)2 (III) [Ad = adenine, Ado = adenosine, 9-MeAd = 9-methyladenine] as well as the more unexpected SnPhCl2(OH)(Ad)2·3H2O (IV) and SnPhCl3(Ado)2 (V) by reaction of SnMe2Cl2 or SnPh2Cl2 with the appropriate bases in methanol is described. 1H NMR studies suggest that coordination is through the N-7 position of the adenine base.

New bifunctional pyrazole based ligands of the type [C3HR2N2CONR'] (where R = H or CH3; R' = CH3, C2H5, or (C3H7)-C-i) were prepared and characterized. The coordination chemistry of these ligands with uranyl nitrate and uranyl bis(dibenzoyl methanate) was studied with infrared (IR), H-1 NMR, electrospray-mass spectrometry (ES-MS), elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The structure of compound [UO2(NO3)(2)(C3H3N2CON{C2H5}(2))] (2) shows that the uranium(VI) ion is surrounded by one nitrogen atom and seven oxygen atoms in a hexagonal bipyramidal geometry with the ligand acting as a bidentate chelating ligand and bonds through both the carbamoyl oxygen and pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms. In the structure of [UO2(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)(C5H7N2CON {C2H5}(2))(2)], (5) the pyrazole figand acts as a second sphere ligand and hydrogen bonds to the water molecules through carbamoyl oxygen and pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms. The structure of [UO2(DBM)(2)C3H3N2CON{C2H5}(2)] (8) (where DBM = C6H5COCHCOC6H5) shows that the pyrazole ligand acts as a monodentate ligand and bonds through the carbamoyl oxygen to the uranyl group. The ES-MS spectra of 2 and 8 show that the ligand is similarly bonded to the metal ion in solution. Ab initio quantum chemical studies show that the steric effect plays the key role in complexation behavior.

Two pentaaza macrocycles containing pyridine in the backbone, namely 3,6,9,12,18-pentaazabicyclo[12.3.1] octadeca-1(18),14,16-triene ([15]pyN(5)), and 3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadeca-1(19),15,17-triene ([16]pyN(5)), were synthesized in good yields. The acid-base behaviour of these compounds was studied by potentiometry at 298.2 K in aqueous solution and ionic strength 0.10 M in KNO3. The protonation sequence of [15]pyN(5) was investigated by H-1 NMR titration that also allowed the determination of protonation constants in D2O. Binding studies of the two ligands with Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ metal ions were performed under the same experimental conditions. The results showed that all the complexes formed with the 15-membered ligand, particularly those of Cu2+ and especially Ni2+, are thermodynamically more stable than with the larger macrocycle. Cyclic voltammetric data showed that the copper(II) complexes of the two macrocycles exhibited analogous behaviour, with a single quasi-reversible one-electron transfer reduction process assigned to the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple. The UV-visible-near IR spectroscopic and magnetic moment data of the nickel(II) complexes in solution indicated a tetragonal distorted coordination geometry for the metal centre. X-band EPR spectra of the copper(II) complexes are consistent with distorted square pyramidal geometries. The crystal structure of [Cu([15]pyN(5))](2+) determined by X-ray diffraction showed the copper(II) centre coordinated to all five macrocyclic nitrogen donors in a distorted square pyramidal environment.

The reactions of PbPh2(OAC)(2) with alkylglyoxylate thiosemicarbazones (HRGTSC, R = Et, Bu) afforded complexes of the type [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O, [PbPh2(RGTSC)(2)] and [PbPh2Cl(BUGTSC)]. The structures of HRGTSC (R = Me, Et, Bu), [PbPh2(OAc)(RGTSC)](R = Me, Et, Bu), [PbPh2Cl(BuGTSC)] and [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O have been studied by X-ray diffraction. [PbPh2(OAc)(RGTSC)] and [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O have [PbC2NO3S] kernels and the coordination sphere of the metal is pentagonal bipyramidal. [PbPh2Cl(BuGTSC)] has a [PbC2NOSCI] kernel and the coordination geometry around lead is pentagonal bipyramidal with one vacant site. Analysis of the bond distances in [PbPh2(GTSC)] center dot H2O suggests a significant affinity between diphenyllead(IV) and carboxylate donor groups, supporting a borderline acidic character for this organometallic cation. H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra in DMSO-d(6) suggest the partial dissociation of the acetate in [PbPh2(OAc)(RGTSC)] solutions and indicate some differences in the coordination mode of the two RGTSC(-) ligands in [PbPh2(RGTSC)(2)] complexes. Complexes [RuCl(H4NO(2)Fo4M)(bipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (1), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Fo4M)(Mebipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (2), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Fo4M)(phen)(dppb)]PF(6) (3), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Ac4M)(bipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (4), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Ac4M)(Mebipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (5) and [RuCl(H4NO(2)Ac4M)(phen)(dppb)]PF(6) (6) with N(4)-methyl-4-nitrobenzalde hyde thiosemicarbazone (H4NO(2)Fo4M) and N(4)-methyl-4-nitroacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (H4NO(2) Ac4M) were obtained from [RuCl(2)(bipy)(dppb)], [RuCl(2)(Mebipy)(dppb)], and [RuCl(2)(phen)(dppb)], (dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphospine)butane; bipy = 2,2`-bipyridine: Mebipy = 4,4`-dimethyl-2,2`-bipyridine: phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). In all cases the thiosemicarbazone is attached to the metal center through the sulfur atom. Complexes (1-6), together with the corresponding ligands and the Ru precursors were evaluated for their ability to in vitro suppress the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi. All complexes were more active than their corresponding ligands and precursors. Complexes (1-3) and (5) revealed to be the most active among all studied compounds with ID(50) = 0.6-0.8 mu M. In all cases the association of the thiosemicarbazone with ruthenium, dppb and bipyridine or phenanthroline in one same complex proved to be an excellent strategy for activity improvement. Red, blue and green emitting rare earth compounds (RE(3+) = Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Tb(3+)) containing the benzenetricarboxylate ligands (BTC) [hemimellitic (EMA), trimellitic (TLA) and trimesic (TMA)] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration, X-ray diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complexes presented the following formula: [RE(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [RE(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [RE(TMA)(H(2)O)(G)], except for Tb-TMA compound, which was obtained only as anhydrous. Phosphorescence data of Gd(3+)-(BTC) complexes showed that the triplet states (T) of the BTC(3-) anions have energy higher than the main emitting states of the Eu(3+) ((5)D(0)) and Tb(3+) ((5)D(4)), indicating that BTC ligands can act as intramolecular energy donors for these metal ions. The high values of experimental intensity parameters (Omega(2)) of Eu(3+)-(BTC) complexes indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. Based on the luminescence spectra, the energy transfer from the T state of BTC ligands to the excited (5)D(0) and (5)D(4) levels of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions is discussed. The emission quantum efficiencies (eta) of the (5)D(0) emitting level of the Eu(3+) ion have been also determined. In the case of the Tb(3+) ion, the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) (J=0-6), indicating that the BTC ligands are good sensitizers. The RE(3+)-(BTC) complexes act as efficient light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) and can be used as tricolor luminescent materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the treatment of cyclometallated dimer [Pd(dmba)(mu-Cl)](2) (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) with AgNO(3) and acetonitrile the result was the monomeric cationic precursor [Pd(dmba)(NCMe)(2)](NO(3)) (NCMe=acetonitrile) (1). Compound 1 reacted with m-nitroaniline (m-NAN) and pirazine (pz), originating [Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))(m-NAN)] (2) and [{Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))}(2)(mu-pz)] center dot H(2)O (3), respectively. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The IR spectra of (2-3) display typical bands of monodentade O-bonded nitrate groups, whereas the NMR data of 3 are consistent with the presence of bridging pyrazine ligands. The structure of compound 3 was determined by Xray diffraction analysis. This packing consists of a supramolecular chain formed by hydrogen bonding between the water molecule and nitrato ligands of two consecutive [Pd(2)(dmba)(2)(ONO(2))2(mu-pz)] units. This work describes the synthesis, IR and (13)C CPMAS NMR spectroscopic as well the thermal characterization of the new dicarboxylate complexes [Pd(2)(ox)(2)(4,4'-bipy)]n (1), [Pd(2)(ox)(2)(bpe)](n) (2) and [Pd(2)(ox)(2)(pz)](n) (3) {ox = oxalate, bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, pz = pyrazine}. TG experiments reveal that compounds 1-3 undergo thermal decomposition in three steps. Metal palladium was the final product of the thermal decompositions, which was identified by X-ray powder diffraction.

The cyanate-bridged cyclopalladated compound [Pd(N,C-dmba)(mu-NCO)](2) (1) (dmba = PhCH2NMe2) reacts in CH2Cl2 with 2,3-lutidine (2,3- lut), 3,4-lutidine (3,4-lut), 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy) and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy), to give [Pd(N, C-dmba)(NCO)(2,3-lut)] (2), [Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)(3,4-lut)] (3), [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu-2,2'-bipy)] .CH2Cl2 (4) and [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)] . CH2Cl2 (5), respectively. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. and n. m. r. spectroscopy and also by t.g.a. The i.r. spectra of (2 - 5) display typical bands of monodentate N-bonded cyanate groups, whereas the n. m. r. data of (4) are consistent with the presence of a bridging 2,2'-bipyridine ligand. Complex (4) decomposes slowly in acetone. One of the products formed, [Pd(H2CCOMe) Cl(2,2'-bipy)] (6), was characterized by X-ray diffraction. As inferred from the t.g.a., the thermal stability decreases in the order: [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipy)]. CH2Cl2 (5) > [Pd(N,C-dmba)(2,3-lut)( NCO)] (2) = [Pd(N, C-dmba)(3,4-lut)(NCO)] (3) > [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu- 2,2'-bipy)] .CH2Cl2 (4). According to thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction patterns compounds (2 - 3) decompose into metallic palladium Pd(0), whereas (4 - 5) decompose with the formation of PdO. The X-ray crystal and molecular structure of [Pd(N, C-dmba)( NCO)(2,3-lut)] (2) was determined. The lutidine unit is perpendicular to the coordination plane.
