Amacy Matthews Letters, 1918

The correspondence is dated October 19, 1918 and December 17, 1918. Amacy Matthews was the treasurer for the Township of Crowland. The correspondence is from J.W. [John Wells] Marshall, the county school inspector and relates to payments to be made to each teacher listed in the correspondence. Each letter includes the signature of the teacher acknowledging receipt of the funds. Teachers listed are Orlin McKenney, Edward Farr, Leonard Matthews, Charles Terreberry, Hiram Pratt, William VanAlstine, Grant Jenkinson and Harry Terreberry.

B.N. Peach letter, 1918.

Ben N. Peach (1842-1926) was a well-known geologist whose work focused on the geological structure of Scotland, and in particular the Northwest Scottish Highlands and Southern Uplands. He formed a close working relationship with John Horne and the two colloborated on many works, most notably two memoirs of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, The Silurian Rocks of Britain (1899) and The Geological Structure of the North-West Highlands of Scotland (1907).

Colonel John Butler (Niagara)/St. Catharines District Branch of the United Empire Loyalists fonds

United Empire Loyalist is an honour given to American Loyalists who came to British North America and the British Colonies to show their loyalty to King George III after the British defeat in the American Revolution. The Loyalists settled in Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and modern day New Brunswick. The Colonel John Butler (Niagara) Branch (formerly the St. Catharines and District Branch) has origins which date as far back as 1898. A branch was organized in Virgil by Captain John D. Servos, but was unsuccessful. In 1905 there was another attempt to form a branch, but the war of 1914-1918 resulted in this branch becoming inactive. In 1914, an Act of Parliament incorporated the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada. The St. Catharines and District Branch was formed in 1921. This branch remained active, and in 1992 they changed their name to The Colonel John Butler (Niagara) Branch. The Loyalists also have a strong focus on genealogy. An invitation to the funeral of Mrs. John W. Ball. The invitation reads: Niagara, February 5th, 1856. Sir--- You are requested to attend the Funeral of the late Mrs. John W. Ball, from the Residence of her husband to the Place of Internment, on Thursday the 7th Instant, at the hour of Two O'Clock in the afternoon.
