The objectives of this study were to compare the goodness of fit of four non-linear growth models, i.e. Brody, Gompertz, Logistic and Von Bertalanffy, in West African Dwarf (WAD) sheep. A total of 5274 monthly weight records from birth up to 180 days of age from 889 lambs, collected during 2001 to 2004 in Betecoucou breeding farm in Benin were used. In the preliminary analysis, the General Linear Model Procedure of the Statistical Analysis Systems Institute was applied to the dataset to identify the significant effects of the sex of lamb (male and female), type of birth (single and twin), season of birth (rainy season and dry season), parity of dam (1, 2 and 3) and year of birth (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004) on the observed birth weight and monthly weight up to 6 months of age. The models parameters (A, B and k), coefficient of determination (112), mean square error (MSE) were calculated using language of technical computing package Matlab(R), 2006. The mean values of A, B and k were substituted into each model to calculate the corresponding Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). Among the four growth functions, the Brody model has been selected for its accuracy of fit according to the higher R(2), lower MSE and A/C Finally, the parameters A, B and k were adjusted in Matlab(R) 2006 for the sex of lamb, year of birth, season of birth, birth type and the parity of ewe, providing a specific slope of the Brody growth curve. The results of this study suggest that Brody model can be useful for WAD sheep breeding in Betecoucou farm conditions through growth monitoring.

The main goal in this work is to conduct a quantitative analysis of the mechanical stir casting process for obtaining particulate metal matrix composites. A combined route of stirring at semi-solid state followed by stirring at liquid state is proposed. A fractional factorial design was developed to investigate the influence and interactions of factors as: time, rotation, initial fraction and particle size, on the incorporated fraction. The best incorporations were obtained with all factors at high levels, as well as that very long stirring periods have no strong influence being particle size and rotation the most important factors on the incorporated fraction. Particle wetting occurs during stirring at semisolid state, highlighting the importance of the interactions between particles and the alloy globularized phase. The role of the alloying element Mg as a wettability-promoting agent is discussed. The shear forces resulting from the stirring system is emphasized and understood as the effect of rotation itself added to the propeller blade geometry.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary trace mineral levels and sources on egg quality parameters of second-cycle semi-heavy layers. A number of 360 72-week-old layers were submitted to forced molting. Upon return of lay (83 weeks of age), birds were distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design of six treatments with six replicates of 10 birds each. The control treatment consisted of 0.10% dietary supplementation of trace minerals from inorganic sources, which was proportionally replaced by five levels (110, 100, 90, 80, 70%) of an organic trace mineral supplement containing 30, 30, 40, 6, 0.61, and 0.3 g/kg product of Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu, I, and Se, respectively. All diets contained equal protein, energy, and amino acid levels. Every 28 days of the experimental period (112 days) four eggs per replicate were collected for egg quality evaluation. The following parameters were evaluated: specific gravity, yolk, albumen and eggshell percentages, yolk index, Haugh units, and eggshell thickness and breaking strength. One sample per replicate, consisting of the pool of the yolks of three eggs collected at the end of each experimental period, was used to assess protein and mineral (Ca, P, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) contents. The results were submitted to ANOVA, and means to the test of Tukey at 5% significance level. The evaluated trace mineral levels and sources did not influence any of the studied egg quality parameters. It was concluded that reducing organic trace mineral supplementation in up to 70% relative to 100% inorganic trace mineral supplementation does not affect egg parameters and therefore, can be applied to the diet of semi-heavy layers in their second cycle of lay.

An experiment was carried out at the Research and Development Unit of Brotas aiming at evaluating dietary calcium level and limestone particle size on the production performance of commercial (Hy-Line Brown) layers in the second lay cycle. Experiment duration was 112 days. A total number of 288 hens, with 83 weeks of age in the beginning of the experiment, were used in a completely randomized experimental design in a factorial arrangement of 2x3, with two calcium levels (3.5 and 4.0%) and three limestone particle size compositions: 100% fine limestone (FL), 30% coarse limestone (CL) + 70% fine limestone (FL), and 50% (CL) + 50% (FL), with six replicates of eight birds each. Egg weight (g), egg production (%), egg mass (%), feed intake (g), feed conversion ratio (kg/dz and kg/kg), mortality (%), and egg loss (%) were evaluated. The analysis of variance did not detect significant differences (p>0.05) among treatments on any of the evaluated performance parameters. It was concluded that the tested calcium levels and limestone particle composition did not influence the performance of semi-heavy layers in second production cycle.

Trans-dehydrocrotonin, the major diterpene isolated from the bark of Croton cajucara, has good antiulcerogenic activity which, however, is accompanied by toxic effects. on the basis of these results, a semi-synthetic crotonin, named 4SRC, was prepared to determine whether this substance has similar antiulcerogenic activity with lower or no toxicity. The natural crotonin was also isolated from the bark of C. cajucara but was not used due to the small amount obtained. The cytotoxic effect of semi-synthetic crotonin, expressed as cell viability, was assessed in (a) lung fibroblast cell line (V79) derived from Chinese hamsters, a system commonly used for cytotoxicity studies, and (b) rat hepatocytes isolated from male Wistar rats. After treatment, cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide reduction (MTT reduction), total acid content and neutral red uptake assays. To evaluate V79 cell viability, different concentrations of semi-synthetic crotonin were incubated with the cells. To evaluate the antiulcerogenic effects of semi-synthetic crotonin (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg), we used the models of gastric ulcer induced by ethanol/HCl, stress, indomethacin/bethanechol, and ethanol in male Swiss mice and male Wistar rats. The substance had an IC50 = 500 muM in the neutral red uptake and MTT reduction tests and an IC50 = 200 muM in the nucleic acid content test. With regard to hepatocyte viability after treatment with semi-synthetic crotonin at different concentrations, semi-synthetic crotonin had an IC50 = 10-500 muM in the nucleic acid content and MTT reduction tests and an IC50 = 120 muM in the neutral red uptake test. In another experiment, V79 cells were incubated with the metabolites produced by hepatocytes treated with different concentrations of semi-synthetic crotonin. After a 4-h incubation, semi-synthetic crotonin had an IC50 = 500 muM in the MTT reduction and neutral red uptake tests and an IC50 = 370 muM in nucleic acid content test. The substance had significant antiulcerogenic activity in all models studied, suggesting the presence of a possible antisecretory effect combined with a cytoprotective effect. For this reason, the effect of semi-synthetic crotonin was also evaluated on biochemical parameters of gastric juice and gastric wall mucus, both obtained from pylorus-ligated mice. No significant differences were observed in these parameters between semi-synthetic crotonin-treated and control animals. The results obtained with semi-synthetic crotonin are promising, with a significant preventive effect against gastric ulcer induced by different agents. Our data also show that semi-synthetic crotonin was less toxic than dehydrocrotonin and that the cytotoxic effects decreases with the time that isolated hepatocytes were in culture. The ovary of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus dog tick female is structurally formed by oocytes in five different stages of development (from I to V) and attached to the gonad by the pedicel. The present study evaluated possible toxic effects of the acaricide fipronil (Frontline (R)) on ovaries of semi-engorged ticks. Sixty partially fed females of R. sanguineus tick were distributed into four groups of 15 specimens each: I - non-treated; II, III and IV - treated with 1, 5 and 10 ppm of fipronil, respectively. The acaricide induced structural changes in the oocytes of individuals of the different treated groups ranging from the presence of a few small vacuoles to cellular death. In conclusion, germinative cells of semi-engorged R. sanguineus tick female are affected by different concentrations of fipronil leading to the reduction of tick fertility. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. We compare phenomenological values of the frozen QCD running coupling constant (alpha(s)) with two classes of infrared finite solutions obtained through nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson equations. We use these same solutions with frozen coupling constants as well as their respective nonperturbative gluon propagators to compute the QCD prediction for the asymptotic pion form factor. Agreement between theory and experiment on alpha(s)(0) and F (pi)(Q(2)) is found only for one of the Schwinger-Dyson equation solutions.

Asymptotic soliton trains arising from a 'large and smooth' enough initial pulse are investigated by the use of the quasiclassical quantization method for the case of Kaup-Boussinesq shallow water equations. The parameter varying along the soliton train is determined by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule which generalizes the usual rule to the case of 'two potentials' h(0)(x) and u(0)(x) representing initial distributions of height and velocity, respectively. The influence of the initial velocity u(0)(x) on the asymptotic stage of the evolution is determined. Excellent agreement of numerical solutions of the Kaup-Boussinesq equations with predictions of the asymptotic theory is found. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We introduce and discuss the method of linear delta expansion for the calculation of effective potentials in superspace, by adopting the improved version of the super-Feynman rules. Calculations are carried out up to two loops and an expression for the optimized Kahler potential in the Wess-Zumino model is worked out.
