Characteristic remanent magnetizations derived from detailed thermal and alternating-field demagnetization of basalts recovered at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 807 on the Ontong Java Plateau reveal constant normal polarity consistent with paleontological ages from overlying sediments, suggesting deposition in early Aptian times at the beginning of the Cretaceous Normal Polarity Superchron (K-N). The paleomagnetic data can be divided into 14 distinct inclination groups, which together define a paleolatitude of 18°S, some 16° shallower than expected from a Pacific apparent polar wander path (APWP) based on nonsedimentary data. The data display a trend in paleomagnetic inclination, showing shallower values with increasing depth. We conclude that this trend is a result of local tectonic tilting during the waning phases of volcanism on the plateau. Hotspot-based plate reconstructions for the Early Cretaceous place the Ontong Java Plateau on the Louisville hotspot, presently located at 51°S, whereas the paleolatitude for Site 807 based on the Pacific APWP is 34°S. Because the nominal mean inclination from Site 807 and values derived from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sediments of other sites predict shallower paleolatitudes for the Ontong Java Plateau, values from the Pacific APWP provide lower bounds on true polar wander. Considering mantle plume sources on the southern and northern portions of the plateau (DSDP Site 288 and ODP Site 807, respectively), the Louisville hotspot appears to have moved 9°-17° to the south relative to the spin axis since the Early Cretaceous. This sense of motion is consistent with previous results for the Suiko Seamount (65 Ma) of the Hawaiian-Emperor Chain.

This petrological study of the lower Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE1a) focused on the nature of the organic-rich interval as well as the tuffaceous units above and below it. The volcaniclastic debris deposited just prior to the OAE1a is consistent with reactivation of volcanic centers across the Shatsky Rise, concurrent with volcanism on the Ontong Java Plateau. This reactivation may have been responsible for the sub-OAE1a unconformity. Soon after this volcanic pulse, anomalous amounts of organic matter accumulated on the rise, forming a black shale horizon. The complex textures in the organic-rich intervals suggest a history of periodic anoxia, overprinted by bioturbation. Components include pellets, radiolarians, and fish debris. The presence of carbonate-cemented radiolarite under the OAE1a intervals suggests that there has been large-scale remobilization of carbonate in the system, which in turn may explain the absence of calcareous microfossils in the section. The volcanic debris in the overlying tuffaceous interval differs in that it is significantly epiclastic and glauconitic. It was likely derived from an emergent volcanic edifice.

Organic-carbon-rich 'black shales' and adjacent organic-carbon-poor rocks from three different Cretaceous settings encountered during ODP Leg 103 have been studied by organic geochemical methods. Rock-Eval analysis, carbon isotope data, and lipid biomarkers show organic matter to contain varying proportions of marine and continental materials. In Hauterivian-Barremian organic-carbon-rich marlstone turbidites, large amounts of land-derived organic matter are found. Aptian-Albian black-colored shales are interspersed within green claystones, from which they differ by containing more marine organic matter. An abbreviated layer of black shale from the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary is dominated by well-preserved marine organic matter. Downslope transport and rapid reburial within a predominantly oxygenated deep-water setting created most of these examples of black shales, except for the Cenomanian-Turonian deposits in which deep-water anoxia may have been involved.

A new composite d18O record, generated from calcareous fine-fraction and bulk sediments from the Exmouth Plateau, details long-term Cretaceous climatic change at mid-latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. Assessment of new and previously published d18O data indicates that a mid-Cretaceous global climatic optimum was achieved sometime between the time of the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary and the middle Turonian, when surface-ocean paleotemperatures were the highest of the past 115 m.y. Periods of cooling and warming that reversed the general patterns were superimposed on long-term Aptian-Turonian warming and Turonian-Maastrichtian cooling trends, respectively. Extrapolation of Southern Hemisphere paleotemperature trends to Maastrichtian paleotemperature data from a low-latitude Pacific guyot implies that maximum mid-Cretaceous low-latitude paleotemperatures could have been in excess of 33°C.

Organic geochemical data of Lower Cretaceous shallow water sediments from two sites (865 and 866) drilled during ODP leg 143 are presented. The organic matter is mainly terrestrial at the bottom of the sedimentary column at site 865, whereas algal and/or bacterial organic matter is dominant at site 866. This is the first evidence of shallow water deposition of organic matter during the Early Cretaceous in the Northwestern Pacific. The lower Aptian organic carbon-rich layers from the shallow water sediments of site 866 are geochemically similar to coeval mid-water sediments of site 463.

The organic geochemical character of rocks selected from Aptian, Valanginian, and Berriasian clay stone and siltstone sequences encountered in Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Holes 762C and 763C on the Exmouth Plateau was determined by means of a variety of analytical procedures. These sequences represent distal portions of the Mesozoic Barrow delta, in which petroleum source rocks and reservoirs exist on the Australian continent. The organic matter at the ODP sites is thermally immature type III material. Biomarker hydrocarbon compositions are dominated by long-chain, waxy n-alkanes and by C29 steranes, which reflect the land-plant origin of organic matter. Organic carbon d13C values ranged from -26 per mil to -28 per mil, consistent with a C3 land-plant source. Kerogen pyrolysate compositions and hopane isomerization ratios revealed progressively larger contributions of recycled organic matter as the depth of the deltaic sedimentary layers became greater.

ODP Leg 198 drilling on Shatsky Rise recovered a lower Aptian porcellanite (~120.5 Ma) deposited during oceanic anoxic event (OAE) 1a that contains C36-C39 alkadienones: C37:2 and C39:2 alkadien-2-ones and C36:2 and C38:2 alkadien-3-ones. This alkenone distribution differs from that typical of contemporary sediments and haptophyte algae, but resembles that of Cretaceous sediments from the Blake-Bahama basin. The discovery of alkenones in the early Aptian extends their sedimentary record by 15 M.y. to 120.5 M.y. and demonstrates the potential for long-term survival of these diagnostic functional lipids under favorable depositional conditions and subsequent shallow burial. It also contributes to the understanding and reconstruction of evolutionary developments in alkenone distributions and biosynthesis over geologic time.

Detailed mineralogical and geochemical studies were performed on samples from selected time intervals recovered during Leg 79 on the Mazagan Plateau. The uppermost Albian and Cenomanian sediments of Sites 545 and 547 can be correlated on the basis of mineralogy and geochemistry; these sediments illustrate differential settling processes and the existence of hot climates with alternating humid and dry seasons in the African coastal zone. The upper Aptian to Albian black shales of Site 545 point to an irregular alternation of tectonic activity and relaxation stages, allowing different behaviors in the reworking of soils, crystalline rocks, and sediments born in peri-marine basins. The barren lower Mesozoic reddish sediments and evaporitic series of Sites 546 and 547 are characterized by a strong physical erosion of sialic landscapes, without clear evidence of post-depositional metamorphic events. At Site 546 strong early diagenetic processes in a confined evaporitic environment affect both the mineralogy and the geochemistry of pre-Miocene rocks.

In the framework of a multidisciplinary research program, an organic geochemical study was carried out on a drill core which comprises a 245 m thick sequence of light-colored, Upper Albian marlstones that were deposited in the central part of the Lower Saxony basin (northern Germany). For part of the Upper Albian sequence, high-resolution measurements of carbonate contents reveal cycles which can be related to earth orbital forcing. Based on these data, sediment accumulation rates were calculated to be in the order of 15 g/m**2/yr. These high accumulation rates contrast with very low organic carbon contents and an extremely poor preservation of the autochthonous organic matter. Most of the sedimentary organic matter is of terrigenous origin and mainly derived from the erosion of older sedimentary rocks. Organic petrography reveals only a very small fraction of marine organic particles. Carbon/sulphur ratios, pristane/phytane ratios as well as the predominance of resedimented organic particles over autochthonous organic particles suggest that aerobic degradation processes rather than anaerobic processes (sulphate reduction) were responsible for the degradation of the organic matter. Furthermore, the scarcity of terrigenous organic particles (vitrinite) indicates that there was little vegetation on nearby land areas. To explain these analytical results, a depositional model was developed which could explain the scarcity of organic matter in the Upper Albian sediments. This model is based on downwelling of oxygen-rich, saline waters of Tethyan origin, which reduces the nutrient content of surface waters and thus primary bioproductivity while degradation of primary organic matter in the water column is enhanced at the same time. These conditions contrast to those which existed in Barremian and early Aptian times in this basin, when limited water exchange with adjacent oceans caused oxygen deficiency and the deposition of numerous organic carbon-rich black shales. The thick, organic matter-poor Upper Albian sequence of northern Germany also contrasts with comparatively thin, time-equivalent, deep-sea black shales from Italy. This discrepancy indicates that local and regional oceanographic factors (at least in this case) have a greater influence on organic matter deposition than global events.

A planktonic foraminiferal fauna of probable late Aptian age is recorded in Cores 113-693A-47R and -48R, located on the Antarctic continental margin. Moderate to highly productive surface waters and upper bathyal paleodepths are inferred from benthic and planktonic foraminifers, and other biotic and mineral components in the >63 µm size fraction.

Three sites drilled during Leg 122, Site 761 on the Wombat Plateau and Sites 762 and 763 on the Exmouth Plateau, provide a composite Cretaceous section ranging in age from Berriasian to Maestrichtian. Together, these sites contain an apparently complete, expanded Aptian-Maestrichtian record. Consistently occurring and moderately well-preserved nannofossil assemblages allow reasonably high biostratigraphic resolution. Our data indicate that traditional middle and Upper Cretaceous nannofossil biozonations are not entirely applicable in this region. In this investigation, we compare in detail the relative ranges of key Cretaceous nannofossil markers in the eastern Indian Ocean and in sections from Europe and North Africa. We have determined which previously used events are applicable, and which additional markers have biostratigraphic utility in this region. Significant differences in Campanian-Maestrichtian assemblages exist between the more northern Site 761 and Sites 762 and 763. Such differences are surprising, considering that these sites are only separated by 3° of latitude. We interpret them as marking a strong thermal gradient over the Exmouth Plateau region. Other results include the recovery of an expanded Albian-Cenomanian sequence containing a mixture of Austral and Tethyan floras, which will enable correlation of biozonations established for these two realms; the recovery of two condensed but apparently complete Cenomanian-Turonian boundary sections; correlation of Upper Cretaceous calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy with magneto- and foraminifer stratigraphy; and correlation of portions of the Barrow Group equivalents to the Berriasian and Valanginian stages.

Strata that record the evolutionary history of the North American continental margin in a region that serves as the basin margin interface between allochthonous sedimentation from the continent and pelagic sedimentation from the oceanic realm were recovered at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 603, on the lower continental rise. The lowermost unit recovered at this site is composed of upper Berriasian-Aptian interbedded laminated limestone and bioturbated limestone with sandstone to claystone turbidites. This unit can be correlated with the Blake-Bahama Formation in the western North Atlantic. Studies of the laminated and bioturbated limestones were used to determine the depositional environment. Geochemical and petrographic studies suggest that the laminated limestones were deposited from the suspended particulate loads of the nepheloid layer associated with weak bottom-current activity as well as moderate to poorly oxygenated bottom-water conditions. Fragments of macrofossils are also found in the Blake-Bahama Formation drilled at Site 603. Twelve specimens and their host sediment were analyzed for their carbon and oxygen isotopic composition. The macrofossil samples chosen for analysis consist of nine samples of Inoceramus, two ammonite aptychi, and one belemnite sample. Depletion in 18O is observed in recrystallized specimens. The ammonite aptychi have been diagenetically altered and/or exhibit evidence of isotopic fractionation by the organism. Oxygen isotope paleotemperatures obtained from five well-preserved specimens - four of Inoceramus and one of a belemnite - suggest that bottom-water temperatures in the North Atlantic Basin during the Early Cretaceous were very warm, at least 11°C.
