In the study are described five species of watermites, collected by the Austrian-Ceylonese hydrobiological mission 1970 in torrents of the highlands of south-west Sri Lanka. The species are: Torrenticola (Monatractides) pusta Cook, 1967, T.(M.) Oxystoma hamata (Lundbald, 1941), T.(M.) ceylonensis nov. spec., Atractides schwoerbeli Lundbald, 1969 and Arrenurus (Micruracarus) madaraszi Daday, 1898.

Vast laminated diatom mat deposits from the west low-latitude Pacific Ocean in the last glacial period

Diatoms are one of the predominant contributors to global carbon fixation by accounting for over 40% of total oceanic primary production and dominate export production. They play a significant role in marine biogeochemistry cycle. The diatom mat deposits are results of vast diatoms bloom. By analysis of diatom mats in 136 degrees 00'-140 degrees 00'E, 15 degrees 00'-21 degrees 00'N, Eastern Philippines Sea, we identified the species of the diatoms as giant Ethmodiscus rex (Wallich) Hendey. AMS C-14 dating shows that the sediments rich in diatom mats occurred during 16000-28600 a B.P., which means the bloom mainly occurred during the last glacial period, while there are no diatom mat deposits in other layers. Preliminary analysis indicates that Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) expanded northward and brought silicate-rich water into the area, namely, silicon leakage processes caused the bloom of diatoms. In addition, the increase of iron input is one of the main reasons for the diatom bloom.

In diesem Beitrag wird das von Thomas Martens und Jürgen Rost entwickelte Integrierte Handlungsmodell reflektiert, auf Lernprozesse übertragen, theoretische erweitert und beispielhaft empirisch überprüft. Zunächst werden die theoretischen Potenziale des Modells aufgezeigt, indem es auf Lernprozesse angewendet wird. Danach werden die typischen Prozesse der drei Handlungsphasen dargestellt, insbesondere die funktionslogische Integration von bewussten und unbewussten sowie kognitiven und affektiven Prozessen. Abschließend wird eine empirische Studie vorgestellt, die das Lernen von Statistik im Hochschulbereich untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Mischverteilungsmodellen werden sieben Lerntypen identifiziert, die den entsprechenden motivationalen, intentionalen und volitionalen Mustern der Lern- und Handlungsgenese entsprechen. A high resolution study of the chlorophyll and bacteriochlorophyll pigment distributions in a calcite/gypsum microbial mat

Application of a high resolution high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method to the study of a microbial mat system has permitted the identification of a greater number of pigments derived from green bacteria than reported in a previous study. Although the green bacteria found in the mat were identified as Chloroflexus-like, bacteriochlorophylls and bacteriophaeophytins c that can be attributed to Chloroflexaceae on the basis of literature reports account for less than 10% of the pigments derived from green bacteria in the mat. Analysis of the bacteriochlorophylls and bacteriophaeophytins c and d using atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry reveals complex depth profiles, signalling inputs from a number of organisms. The pigment compositions provide evidence for green bacteria living in close proximity to the living cyanobacterial mat. Depth profiles of pigments derived from green, purple and cyanobacteria indicate that the remnants of mats present in the deeper part of the section contain a record dominated by signatures from anoxygenic photoautotrophs.
