Sugarcane moth borers are a diverse group of species occurring in several genera, but predominately within the Noctuidae and Pyraloidea. They cause economic loss in sugarcane and other crops through damage to stems and stalks by larval boring. Partial sequence data from two mitochondrial genes, COII and 16S, were used to construct a molecular phylogeny based on 26 species from ten genera and six tribes. The Noctuidae were found to be monophyletic, providing molecular support for the taxonomy within this subfamily. However, the Pyraloidea are paraphyletic, with the noctuids splitting Galleriinae and Schoenobiinae from the Crambinae. This supports the separation of the Pyralidae and Crambinae, but does not support the concept of the incorporation of the Schoenobiinae in the Crambidae. Of the three crambine genera examined, Diatraea was monophyletic, Chilo paraphyletic, and Eoreuma was basal to the other two genera. Within the Noctuidae, Sesamia and Bathytricha were monophyletic, with Busseola basal to Bathytricha. Many species in this study (both noctuids and pyraloids) had different biotypes within collection localities and across their distribution; however the individual biotypes were not phylogenetically informative. These data highlight the need for taxonomic revisions at all taxon levels and provide a basis for the development of DNA-based diagnostics for rapidly identifying many species at any developmental stage. This ability is vital, as the species are an incursion threat to Australia and have the potential to cause significant losses to the sugar industry.

Cerebral electrical impedance is useful for the detection of cerebral edema following hypoxia in newborn infants. Thus it may be useful for determining neurological outcome or monitoring treatment. Hypothermia is a promising new therapy currently undergoing trials, but will alter impedance measurements. This study aimed to define the relationship between temperature and both cerebral and whole body electrical impedance, and to derive correction factors for adjustment of impedance measurements during hypothermia. In eight anaesthetized 1-2 day old piglets rectal, tympanic and scalp temperatures were monitored continuously. Following baseline readings at a rectal temperature of 39degreesC, piglets were cooled to 32degreesC. Four piglets were re-warmed. Cerebral and whole body impedance were measured at each 0.5degreesC as rectal temperature decreased. There was a strong linear relationship between both cerebral and whole body impedance and each of the temperatures measured. There was no difference in the relationship between impedance and rectal, tympanic or scalp temperatures. The relationship for impedance and rectal temperature was the same during cooling and re-warming. Using the correction factors derived it will be possible to accurately monitor cerebral and whole body fluid distribution during hypothermic treatment.

Clinically healthy mixed breed dogs (n = 20) were used to determine if a Tris (tromethamine)-buffered test solution, Otinide((R)) (Trademark of Dermcare-Vet Pty-Ltd, Australia), containing disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA; 1.21 g/L) and polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB; 0.22 g/L) caused ototoxicity or vestibular dysfunction. The dogs were randomly assigned to either a control group (group A, n = 10) receiving saline, or a treatment group (group B, n = 10) receiving the test solution. Phase 1 of the study consisted of applying 5.0 mL of saline to both ears of the control group (group A) and 5 mL of test solution to both ears of the test group (group B), for 21 days. A bilateral myringotomy was then performed on each dog under deep sedation. Phase 2 of the study then consisted of applying 2.0 mL of the saline to both ears of the control group (group A) and 2.0 mL of the test solution to both ears of the test group (group B), for 14 days. Throughout the study, dogs were examined for clinical health, and underwent otoscopic, vestibular and auditory examinations. The auditory examinations included brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) threshold and supra-threshold assessments using both click and 8 kHz tone burst stimuli. The absence of vestibular signs and effects on the BAEP attributable to the test solution suggested the test solution could be applied safely to dogs, including those with a damaged tympanic membrane.

A környezetbarát megoldások elterjesztésére irányuló stratégiák különböznek aszerint, hogy mire helyezik a fő hangsúlyt. A „zöld pozicionálás” típusú megközelítés a környezettudatos fogyasztókat célozza meg, míg a „hatékonyságra fókuszáló pozicionálás” az adott termék vagy szolgáltatás által elérhető hatékonyság-javításra összpontosít, megcélozva az egész társadalmat, függetlenül a fogyasztók környezeti tudatosságától. A cikk szerint a fogyasztói politika hatóköre szélesíthető, az összes környezeti haszon pedig növelhető, ha a környezetbarát termékeket és megoldásokat eltérő módokon népszerűsítjük, nemcsak „zöldként” pozicionálva, hanem más érvekre is építve (pl. költséghatékonyság, lakások értékállóságának növelése, a beruházás megtérülése, stb.). A cikk egy modellt vázol fel, amely segíthet az üvegházhatású gázok (ÜHG-k) kibocsátásának csökkentésére irányuló fogyasztói politika hatékonyságának, eredményességének növelésében. A társadalmi és az egyéni határköltséggörbékből kiindulva a szerzők a cselekvés három különböző (zöld, sárga, és vörös) zónáját azonosítják. Az ezekbe a zónákba eső ÜHG elhárítási opciókat ezután egy ún. „profilozási” technika segítségével értékelik, különös hangsúlyt fektetve az opciók megvalósítását korlátozó, illetve azt elősegítő tényezőkre. A profilozás segíthet a kiválasztott ÜHG elhárítási opciók megvalósítási stratégiájának megalkotásában, továbbá a hatásosabb és a tömegpiac számára is elfogadhatóbb fogyasztói politika tervezésében. Az esettanulmány a magyarországi ÜHG elhárítással kapcsolatos politika három különböző pozicionálási lehetőségét értékeli 2000-től kezdve, és a legfrissebb társadalmi határköltséggörbére alapozva, valamint az államnak a lakossági szektorra vonatkozó jelenlegi energiahatékonysági politikája ismeretében gyakorlati példákkal szolgál a profilozási technika használatát illetően. A kutatás a Norvég Finanszírozási Mechanizmus támogatásával valósult meg.

This paper describes and analyses the Audiovisual Technology Hub Programme (Programa Polos Audiovisuales Tecnológicos - PPAT), which has been implemented in Argentina between 2010 and 2015 as part of the public policy of former administration of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The main goal was to promote a television industry that reflects the cultural diversity of Argentina by dividing the national territory in nine into nine audiovisual technology hubs, where national public universities acted as centres that gathered a range of regional stakeholders. Considering the 18 TV seasons that were produced for television between 2013 and 2014, the text analyses the diversity of sources and genres / subgenres and its restricted marketing. The article closes with a brief set of conclusions about this initiative.

The violent merger of two carbon-oxygen white dwarfs has been proposed as a viable progenitor for some Type Ia supernovae. However, it has been argued that the strong ejecta asymmetries produced by this model might be inconsistent with the low degree of polarization typically observed in Type Ia supernova explosions. Here, we test this claim by carrying out a spectropolarimetric analysis for the model proposed by Pakmor et al. for an explosion triggered during the merger of a 1.1 and 0.9 M⊙ carbon-oxygen white dwarf binary system. Owing to the asymmetries of the ejecta, the polarization signal varies significantly with viewing angle. We find that polarization levels for observers in the equatorial plane are modest (≲1 per cent) and show clear evidence for a dominant axis, as a consequence of the ejecta symmetry about the orbital plane. In contrast, orientations out of the plane are associated with higher degrees of polarization and departures from a dominant axis. While the particular model studied here gives a good match to highly polarized events such as SN 2004dt, it has difficulties in reproducing the low polarization levels commonly observed in normal Type Ia supernovae. Specifically, we find that significant asymmetries in the element distribution result in a wealth of strong polarization features that are not observed in the majority of currently available spectropolarimetric data of Type Ia supernovae. Future studies will map out the parameter space of the merger scenario to investigate if alternative models can provide better agreement with observations.

Calculations of synthetic spectropolarimetry are one means to test multidimensional explosion models for Type Ia supernovae. In a recent paper, we demonstrated that the violent merger of a 1.1 and 0.9 M⊙ white dwarf binary system is too asymmetric to explain the low polarization levels commonly observed in normal Type Ia supernovae. Here, we present polarization simulations for two alternative scenarios: the sub-Chandrasekhar mass double-detonation and the Chandrasekhar mass delayed-detonation model. Specifically, we study a 2D double-detonation model and a 3D delayed-detonation model, and calculate polarization spectra for multiple observer orientations in both cases. We find modest polarization levels (<1 per cent) for both explosion models. Polarization in the continuum peaks at ∼0.1–0.3 per cent and decreases after maximum light, in excellent agreement with spectropolarimetric data of normal Type Ia supernovae. Higher degrees of polarization are found across individual spectral lines. In particular, the synthetic Si II λ6355 profiles are polarized at levels that match remarkably well the values observed in normal Type Ia supernovae, while the low degrees of polarization predicted across the O I λ7774 region are consistent with the non-detection of this feature in current data. We conclude that our models can reproduce many of the characteristics of both flux and polarization spectra for well-studied Type Ia supernovae, such as SN 2001el and SN 2012fr. However, the two models considered here cannot account for the unusually high level of polarization observed in extreme cases such as SN 2004dt.

Los estudiantes nacidos en la era de las tecnologías digitales (los nativos digitales) pueden tener mayor acceso a las mismas, pero la idea de que aprenden más y mejor solo por implementar dispositivos de aprendizaje con la última tecnología disponible es simplista y no se correspondería con la evidencia. El uso para objetivos académicos requeriría habilidades digitales. Éstas aluden no solo al dominio técnico y operacional, sino sobre todo al dominio cognitivo, como habilidades de búsqueda y navegación, integración, evaluación de fuentes, y de uso estratégico de la información. Se han investigado mediante cuestionarios, o tareas informatizadas que plantean escenarios de búsqueda y comprensión de materiales. Entre las medidas de auto-informe, se ha avanzado en diseñar cuestionarios con propiedades psicométricas conocidas. Entre las segundas, se han creado entornos de tarea que remedan la situación en Internet (sitios, páginas. . .) y se toman indicadores de precisión en las tareas, tiempos, y caminos de navegación. Si bien las investigaciones todavía son escasas, apuntan a una relación entre habilidades digitales y comprensión lectora, y cuando se investiga en tareas en ambientes controlados, la definición de las habilidades digitales se solapa con la competencia lectora digital (p.ej., en las pruebas PISA). Futuras investigaciones deben pormenorizar en las relaciones entre distintos aspectos de las habilidades digitales, en relación a los resultados en comprensión lectora u otros objetivos de aprendizaje, para poder caracterizar estrategias de intervención educativa.

We report a case of acute facial oedema in an elderly hospitalized patient which was initially misdiagnosed as angioedema secondary to antibiotics in a patient with an allergic diathesis. We describe the differential aetiologies and then the true cause of the oedema, which was an uncommon complication of a very common condition in the elderly: a pneumomediastinum with subcutaneous emphysema probably due to rupture of an emphysematous lung bulla during chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation. Lastly, we focus on the therapeutic procedures instituted for the treatment of the pneumomediastinum.
