Differential scanning calorimetry (DSc) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to obtain the gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature (T-m) and the apparent hydrodynamic radius (R-h) of spontaneously formed cationic vesicles of dialkyldimethylammonium bromide salts (CnH2n+1)(2)(CH3)(2)N+center dot Br-, with varying chain lengths. The preparation of cationic vesicles from aqueous solution of these surfactants, for n = 12, 14, 16 and 18 (DDAB, DTDAB, DHDAB and DODAB, respectively), requires the knowledge of the surfactant gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature, or melting temperature (T-m) since below this temperature these surfactants are poorly or not soluble in water. That series of cationic surfactants has been widely investigated as vesicle-forming surfactants, although C-12 and C-18, DDAB and DODAB are by far the most investigated from this series. The dependence of T-m of these surfactants on the number n of carbons in the surfactant tails is reported. The T-m obtained by DSC increases non-linearly with n, and the vesicle apparent radius R-h is about the same for DHDAB and DODAB, but much smaller for DDAB. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.. Silica sonogels with different porosities were prepared by acid sono-hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane. Wet sonogels were studied using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC shows a broad thermal peak below the normal water melting point associated with the melting of confined ice nanocrystals, or nanoporosity. The nanopore size distribution was determined from the Gibbs-Thomson equation. As the porosity is increased, a second sharp DSC thermal peak with onset temperature at the water melting point is apparent, which was associated with the melting of ice macrocrystals, or macroporosity. The DSC result could be causing misinterpretation of the macroporosity because water may not be exactly confined in very feeble silica network regions in sonogels with high porosity. The structure of the wet gels can be described fairly well as mutually self-similar mass fractal structures with characteristic length. increasing from similar to 1.8 to similar to 5.4 nm and mass fractal dimension D diminishing discretely from similar to 2.6 to similar to 2.3 as the porosity increases in the range studied. More specifically, such a structure could be described using a two-parameter correlation function gamma(r) similar to r(D-3) exp(-r/xi), which is limited at larger scale by the cut-off distance xi but without a well-defined small scale cut-off distance, at least up to the maximum angular domain probed using SAXS in the present study.

A sample series of silica sonogels was prepared using different water-tetraethoxysilane molar ratio (r(w)) in the gelation step of the process in order to obtain aerogels with different bulk densities after the supercritical drying. The samples were analyzed by means of small-angle x-ray-scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen-adsorption techniques. Wet sonogels exhibit mass fractal structure with fractal dimension D increasing from similar to2.1 to similar to2.4 and mass-fractal correlation length xi diminishing from similar to13 nm to similar to2 nm, as r(w) is changed in the nominal range from 66 to 6. The process of obtaining aerogels from sonogels and heat treatment at 500degreesC, in general, increases the mass-fractal dimension D, diminishes the characteristic length xi of the fractal structure, and shortens the fractal range at the micropore side for the formation of a secondary structured particle, apparently evolved from the original wet structure at a high resolution level. The overall mass-fractal dimension D of aerogels was evaluated as similar to2.4 and similar to2.5, as determined from SAXS and from pore-size distribution by nitrogen adsorption, respectively. The fine structure of the secondary particle developed in the obtaining of aerogels could be described as a surface-mass fractal, with the correlated surface and mass-fractal dimensions decreasing from similar to2.4 to similar to2.0 and from similar to2.7 to similar to2.5, respectively, as the aerogel bulk density increases from 0.25 (r(w)=66) up to 0.91 g/cm(3) (r(w)=6).

Low density silica sonogels were prepared from acid sonohydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane. Wet gels were studied by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC tests were carried out under a heating rate of 2 degrees C/min from -120 degrees C up to 30 degrees C. Aerogels were obtained by CO(2) supercritical extraction and characterized by nitrogen adsorption and SAXS. The DSC thermogram displays two distinct endothermic peaks. The first, a broad peak extending from about -80 degrees C up to practically 0 degrees C, was associated to the melting of ice nanocrystals with a crystal size distribution with pore diameter ranging from 1 or 2 nm up to about 60 nm, as estimated from Thomson's equation. The second, a sharp peak with onset temperature close to 0 degrees C, was attributed to the melting of macroscopic crystals. The DSC incremental nanopore volume distribution is in reasonable agreement with the incremental pore volume distribution of the aerogel as determined from nitrogen adsorption. No macroporosity was detected by nitrogen adsorption, probably because the adsorption method applies stress on the sample during measurement, leading to a underestimation of pore volume, or because often positive curvature of the solid surface is in aerogels, making the nitrogen condensation more difficult. According to the SAXS results, the solid network of the wet gels behaves as a mass fractal structure with mass fractal dimension D=2.20 +/- 0.01 in a characteristic length scale below xi=7.9 +/- 0.1 nm. The mass fractal characteristics of the wet gels have also been probed from DSC data by means of an earlier applied modeling for generation of a mass fractal from the incremental pore volume distribution curves. The results are shown to be in interesting agreement with the results from SAXS.

A comparative study using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen adsorption has been carried out in the structural characterization of silica xerogels and aerogels, obtained from tetraethoxysilane sonohydrolysis. The specific surface and the mean pore size as measured by both the techniques were found to be in notable agreement in all cases for aerogels and xerogels. According to the SAXS data, aerogels at 500 °C exhibit a mass fractal structure with fractal dimension D∼2.4 in the range between the correlation length ξ∼5.3 nm and a∼0.75 nm. An experimental method to probe the mass fractal structure of aerogels from exclusively nitrogen adsorption isotherms has been presented. For aerogels at 500 °C, we have found D∼2.4 in the range between the pore width 2rξ∼33 nm and 2ra∼4.5 nm, which is in notable agreement with the SAXS results (D ∼2.4, ξ∼5.3 nm, a∼0.75 nm) if we assign the pore width 2r probed by the Kelvin equation in the adsorption method to the Bragg distance 2π/q associated to the correlation length 1/q probed by SAXS.

The structural evolution on the drying of wet sonogels of silica with the liquid phase exchanged by acetone, obtained from tetraethoxisilane sonohydrolysis, was studied in situ by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The periods associated to the structural evolution as determined by SAXS are in agreement with those classical ones established on basis of the features of the evaporation rate of the liquid phase in the obtaining of xerogels. The wet gel can be described as formed by primary particles (microclusters), with characteristic length a ∼ 0.67 nm and surface which is fractal, linking together to form mass fractal structures with mass fractal dimension D=2.24 in a length scale ξ∼6.7 nm. As the network collapses while the liquid/vapor meniscus is kept out of the gel volume, the mass fractal structure becomes more compacted by increasing D and decreasing ξ, with smoothing of the fractal surface of the microclusters. The time evolution of the density of the wet gels was evaluated exclusively from the SAXS parameters ξ, D, and a. The final dried acetone-exchanged gel presents Porod's inhomogeneity length of about 2.8 nm and apparently exhibits an interesting singularity D →3, as determined by the mass fractal modeling used to fit the SAXS intensity data for the obtaining of the parameters ξ and D.

We describe a systematic investigation by the discrete dipole approximation on the optical properties of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanocubes as a function of the edge length in the 20-100 nm range. Our results showed that, as the nanocube size increased, the plasmon resonance modes shifted to higher wavelengths, the contribution from scattering to the extinction increased, and the quadrupole modes became more intense in the spectra. The electric field amplitudes at the surface of the nanocubes were calculated considering 514, 633 and 785 nm as the excitation wavelengths. While Ag nanocubes displayed the highest electric field amplitudes (vertical bar E vertical bar(max)) when excited at 514 nm, the Au nanocubes displayed higher vertical bar E vertical bar(max) values than Ag, for all sizes investigated, when the excitation wavelength was either 633 or 785 nm. The variations in vertical bar E vertical bar(max) as a function of size for both Ag and Au nanocubes could be explained based on the relative position of the surface plasmon resonance peak relative to the wavelength of the incoming electromagnetic wave. Our results show that not only size and composition, but also the excitation wavelength, can play an important role over the maximum near-field amplitudes values generated at the surface of the nanocubes.

This Letter reports an investigation on the optical properties of copper nanocubes as a function of size as modeled by the discrete dipole approximation. In the far-field, our results showed that the extinction resonances shifted from 595 to 670 nm as the size increased from 20 to 100 nm. Also, the highest optical efficiencies for absorption and scattering were obtained for nanocubes that were 60 and 100 nm in size, respectively. In the near-field, the electric-field amplitudes were investigated considering 514, 633 and 785 nm as the excitation wavelengths. The E-fields increased with size, being the highest at 633 nm. Materials that can mold the flow of elastic waves of certain energy in certain directions are called phononic materials. The present thesis deals essentially with such phononic systems, which are structured in the mesoscale (<1 µm), and with their individual components. Such systems show interesting phononic properties in the hypersonic region, i.e., at frequencies in the GHz range. It is shown that colloidal systems are excellent model systems for the realization of such phononic materials. Therefore, different structures and particle architectures are investigated by Brillouin light scattering, the inelastic scattering of light by phonons.rnThe experimental part of this work is divided into three chapters: Chapter 4 is concerned with the localized mechanical waves in the individual spherical colloidal particles, i.e., with their resonance- or eigenvibrations. The investigation of these vibrations with regard to the environment of the particles, their chemical composition, and the influence of temperature on nanoscopically structured colloids allows novel insights into the physical properties of colloids at small length scales. Furthermore, some general questions concerning light scattering on such systems, in dispute so far, are convincingly addressed.rnChapter 5 is a study of the traveling of mechanical waves in colloidal systems, consisting of ordered and disordered colloids in liquid or elastic matrix. Such systems show acoustic band gaps, which can be explained geometrically (Bragg gap) or by the interaction of the acoustic band with the eigenvibrations of the individual spheres (hybridization gap).rnWhile the latter has no analogue in photonics, the presence of strong phonon scatterers, when a large elastic mismatch between the composite components exists, can largely impact phonon propagation in analogy to strong multiple light scattering systems. The former is exemplified in silica based phononic structures that opens the door to new ways of sound propagation manipulation.rnChapter 6 describes the first measurement of the elastic moduli in newly fabricated by physical vapor deposition so-called ‘stable organic glasses’. rnIn brief, this thesis explores novel phenomena in colloid-based hypersonic phononic structures, utilizing a versatile microfabrication technique along with different colloid architectures provided by material science, and applying a non-destructive optical experimental tool to record dispersion diagrams.rn

The study is based on experimental work conducted in alpine snow. We made microwave radiometric and near-infrared reflectance measurements of snow slabs under different experimental conditions. We used an empirical relation to link near-infrared reflectance of snow to the specific surface area (SSA), and converted the SSA into the correlation length. From the measurements of snow radiances at 21 and 35 GHz , we derived the microwave scattering coefficient by inverting two coupled radiative transfer models (the sandwich and six-flux model). The correlation lengths found are in the same range as those determined in the literature using cold laboratory work. The technique shows great potential in the determination of the snow correlation length under field conditions.

Acoustic estimates of herring and blue whiting abundance were obtained during the surveys using the Simrad ER60 scientific echosounder. The allocation of NASC-values to herring, blue whiting and other acoustic targets were based on the composition of the trawl catches and the appearance of echo recordings. To estimate the abundance, the allocated NASC -values were averaged for ICES-squares (0.5° latitude by 1° longitude). For each statistical square, the unit area density of fish (rA) in number per square nautical mile (N*nm-2) was calculated using standard equations (Foote et al., 1987; Toresen et al., 1998). To estimate the total abundance of fish, the unit area abundance for each statistical square was multiplied by the number of square nautical miles in each statistical square and then summed for all the statistical squares within defined subareas and over the total area. Biomass estimation was calculated by multiplying abundance in numbers by the average weight of the fish in each statistical square then summing all squares within defined subareas and over the total area. The Norwegian BEAM soft-ware (Totland and Godø 2001) was used to make estimates of total biomass.
