The process of constituency boundary revision in Ireland, designed to satisfy what is perceived as a rigid requirement that a uniform deputy-population ratio be maintained across constituencies, has traditionally consumed a great deal of the time of politicians and officials. For almost two decades after a High Court ruling in 1961, the process was a political one, was highly contentious, and was marked by serious allegations of ministerial gerrymandering. The introduction in 1979 of constituency commissions made up of officials neutralised, for the most part, charges that the system had become too politicised, but it continued the process of micro-management of constituency boundaries. This article suggests that the continuing problems caused by this system – notably, the permanently changing nature of constituency boundaries and resulting difficulties of geographical identification – could be resolved by reversion to the procedure that is normal in proportional representation systems: periodic post-census allocation of seats to constituencies whose boundaries are based on those of recognised local government units and which are stable over time. This reform, replacing the principle of redistricting by the principle of reapportionment, would result in more recognisable constituencies, more predictable boundary trajectories over time, and a more efficient, fairer, and speedier process of revision.

Giovanni Sartori famously wrote that political parties do not need to be mini-republics, yet today parties in many parliamentary democracies are moving in this direction by giving their members direct votes over important decisions, including selecting party leaders and settling policy issues. This paper explores some of the implications of these changes. It asks whether the addition of membership rights affects the types of members who are attracted: do we find a bigger gap between the preferences of party members and of party voters in parties that are more plebiscitary, as literature on members' motivations might lead us to expect? The paper examines this question both cross-sectionally and longitudinally using opinion data from the European Social Survey and newly-available party organizational data from the Political Party Database project.

Since the beginning of the Haitian theatrical tradition there has been an ineluctable dedication to the representation of Haitian history on stage. Given the rich theatrical archive about Haiti throughout the world, this study considers operas and plays written solely by Haitian playwrights. By delving into the works of Juste Chanlatte, Massillon Coicou, and Vendenesse Ducasse this study proposes a re-reading of Haitian theater that considers the stage as an innovative site for contesting negative and clichéd representations of the Haitian Revolution and its revolutionary leadership. A genre long mired in accusations of mimicking European literary forms, this study proposes a reevaluation of Haitian theater and its literary origins.

Knowledge is the key for success. The adequate treatment you make on data for generating knowledge can make a difference in projects, processes, and networks. Such a treatment is the main goal of two important areas: knowledger representation and management. Our aim, in this book, is collecting sorne innovative ways of representing and managing knowledge proposed by several Latin American researchers under the premise of improving knowledge.

The purpose of this thesis was to draw new insights on Thomas Berger’s classic American novel, Little Big Man, and his representation of fictional violence that is a substantial aspect of any text on the Indian Wars and “Custer’s Last Stand”. History’s major world wars led to shifts in the political climate and a noted change in the way that violence was represented in the arts. Historical, fictional, and cinematic treatments of “Custer’s Last Stand” and violence were each considered in relation to the text. Berger's version of the famed story is a revision of history that shows the protagonist as a dual-member of two violent societies. The thesis concluded that Berger’s updated American legends and unique “white renegade” character led to a representation of violence that spoke to the current state of affairs in 1964 when the world was becoming much more hostile and chaotic place.

The project answers to the following central research question: ‘How would a moral duty of patients to transfer (health) data for the benefit of health care improvement, research, and public health in the eHealth sector sit within the existing confidentiality, privacy, and data protection legislations?’. The improvement of healthcare services, research, and public health relies on patient data, which is why one might raise the question concerning a potential moral responsibility of patients to transfer data concerning health. Such a responsibility logically would have subsequent consequences for care providers concerning the further transferring of health data with other healthcare providers or researchers and other organisations (who also possibly transfer the data further with others and other organisations). Otherwise, the purpose of the patients’ moral duty, i.e. to improve the care system and research, would be undermined. Albeit the arguments that may exist in favour of a moral responsibility of patients to share health-related data, there are also some moral hurdles that come with such a moral responsibility. Furthermore, the existing European and national confidentiality, privacy and data protection legislations appear to hamper such a possible moral duty, and they may need to be reconsidered to unlock the full use of data for healthcare and research.

En este texto procuro vincular el principio del deber del juego limpio (Duty of fair play) enunciado por John Rawls a la formación ciudadana. Considero que el juego limpio aporta elementos significativos a la construcción de ciudadanía, como la autonomía y el sentido de justicia. El desarrollo del trabajo se da a través de un recuento breve sobre la escuela y su vínculo con la formación ciudadana en el contexto colombiano. Seguido de esto se revisa la génesis del término competencia y posteriormente se expone de manera crítica el modelo de competencias ciudadanas implementado por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia. Se concluye estableciendo una concordancia entre el juego limpio y la formación ciudadana, teniendo como marco las competencias ciudadanas.

Objective. This study investigated the prevalence of dental wear in 12-year-old adolescents using a modification of the tooth wear index (TWI). The modifications were proposed in order to fit with the World Health Organization standard, thus allowing application of the index in broad epidemiological surveys. Study design: An epidemiological cross-sectional survey was performed by trained, calibrated examiners, using a modified version of the TWI. Methods: Urban elementary schools were chosen because they provide a fair representation of the city`s population in terms of socio-economic status. The sample included 295 adolescents, selected randomly and systematically. Dental wear was assessed by calibrated examiners (kappa > 0.85), using a modified version of the TWI. This modified version includes a code for teeth restored due to wear, and another code for teeth that cannot be assessed. In addition, it does not differentiate the depth of dentine involvement. Proportions and confidence intervals were used to describe the prevalence of dental wear. Mann-Whitney test was used to detect differences in the degree of dental wear between mates and females. The level of statistical significance was set at 5%. Results: In total, 24,780 dental surfaces were evaluated. Among these surfaces, 73.10% did not present dental wear, 24.10% had incipient lesions, 2.46% had moderate lesions and 0.34% had been restored. No severe lesions were detected. Tooth wear was mainly seen on the occlusal/incisal surfaces (26.55%), involving enamel or enamel-dentine, but not the secondary dentine or pulp. The prevalence of dental wear was 26.90%. Considering the different teeth, wear was present in 53.22% of incisors, 50.51% of canines, 10.17% of premolars and 10.85% of molars. The prevalence of the different degrees of dental wear was similar in mates and females (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The modified TWI seems to bean effective toot for use in broad epidemiological surveys, due to easier calibration and high reproducibility rates. Esta propuesta de investigación se enmarca en los encuentros y discusiones que se están realizando en la Escuela de Artes de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades (CEPIA, CIFFyH y SeCyT, de la U.N.C), en relación a las problemáticas de la investigación en Artes. Los encuentros llevados a cabo en diversas ocasiones y a lo largo de 2009, demuestran la necesidad de establecer un campo particular de la investigación y su relación con la práctica artística. Este proyecto nace de estas inquietudes y establece ciertos ejes de trabajo que permiten poner en práctica ciertos esbozos imaginados. En este sentido, nuestra propuesta se centra en definir la misma construcción escénica como objeto de estudio, delimitando sobre éste la problemática de lo real en el trabajo de la ficción, proponiendo además un equipo que permita investigar en su propio desarrollo creativo las diversas variables que entran en juego. De este modo, se trabajará en una propuesta de laboratorio escénico donde los planteos de orden teórico atraviesen la práctica y, a su vez, la observación de ésta permita una reelaboración y profundización del pensamiento contemporáneo sobre la problemática ejecución/representación, desde los diversos órdenes en que ésta interviene. La idea de representación teatral que planteaba Aristóteles señala que las acciones devienen necesariamente en la definición del carácter de los personajes. Este concepto es clave en el desarrollo del teatro occidental y por ende en las diferentes concepciones de actor. La definición de acción dada por Aristóteles es problemática para parte del teatro contemporáneo ya que supone que toda acción es mimética. También da por supuesto que en el teatro se conforman personajes, y que la unidad narrativa está dada por una programática, que es definida por la acción.La presente investigación se propone indagar en la relación entre la ejecución de la acción y su representación en el desarrollo de un laboratorio teatral. Esto implica que necesariamente es aplicada al trabajo escénico. Nuestra hipótesis de partida es que la relación conflictiva entre acción, ejecución de la misma y representación, se produce a partir de la operación material sobre lo real . Estas intersecciones podrían ser pensadas como una teoría del montaje donde la corporalidad es el principio necesario e irreductible de la construcción. La intersección de lo real es una problemática que permite ahondar sobre los procedimientos por los cuales se construye la escena. La idea de un teatro material, obliga a pensar con qué procedimientos se construye ficción. Un teatro que intenta recalar en lo “real” como modo de señalar la cosa misma, se propone, desde la perspectiva de la realización, indagar en los mecanismos de su construcción (procedimientos), por lo cual supone que la actividad teatral puede dar cuenta de los procesos por los cuales se realiza. La realización de una acción, puede remitir a sí misma y genera una relación “extraña” y ambigua con el mundo de referencia. La acción en sí misma, pone en cuestión la idea de modelo y da cuenta de una crisis en la representación. La teoría ha intentado dividir y sistematizar de manera binaria la manifestación teatral: Teatro de Representación/ Teatro Performático, para distinguir un teatro vinculado a la creación de personajes o para relacionarlo a un teatro de ejecución. Sin embargo, pensamos que es posible encontrar en la producción escénica, intersecciones de lo real que median el mundo de la representación y el de la performance para la construcción de ficción. Nuestra hipótesis de base es que si intervenimos el plano de la ejecución en el actor, la representación varía sustancialmente sus mecanismos de producción de sentido. Este primer planteo no es conflictivo hasta que se pone de manifiesto lo real. This research’s proposal is framed into the meetings and discussions that have been taking place in the School of Arts of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities (CEPIA, CIFFyH y SeCyT, of the National University of Cordoba), concerning the difficulties of research in Arts. The meetings carried out along 2009, demonstrate the need to establish a particular field of research and its relation to the practice of arts. This project is born from these concerns and it establishes central axis for the work, that enables us to put on practice some sketches imagined. In this regard, our proposal focuses on defining the construction of the scene as object of study, in itself, delimiting the issue of “the real” in the work of fiction. Proposing, furthermore, a team for researching the many variables that comes into play, in their own creative development. Consequently, the work will be developed in the method of a scenic laboratory, where the theoretical proposals cross over the practice and, in turn, these observations allow a reworking and deepen of contemporary thinking about the problematic of performance / representation, from the diverse orders in which it intervene. The idea of theatrical performance proposed by Aristotle, indicate that actions necessarily turn into the definition of the nature of the characters. This concept is key to the development of Western theaterand consequently on the different conceptions of actor. The definition of action given by Aristotle is problematic for a part of the contemporary theater, because it assumes that every action is mimetic. Also presumes that in the theatre the characters are formed, and narrative unit is given by a programmatic, which is defined by the action. This research proposes to explore the relationship between implementation of the action and its representation in the development of a theatrical laboratory. BACKGROUND: After sub-total hemi-section of cervical cord at level C7/C8 in monkeys, the ipsilesional hand exhibited a paralysis for a couple of weeks, followed by incomplete recovery of manual dexterity, reaching a plateau after 40-50 days. Recently, we demonstrated that the level of the plateau was related to the size of the lesion and that progressive plastic changes of the motor map in the contralesional motor cortex, particularly the hand representation, took place following a comparable time course. The goal of the present study was to assess, in three macaque monkeys, whether the hand representation in the ipsilesional primary motor cortex (M1) was also affected by the cervical hemi-section.¦RESULTS: Unexpectedly, based on the minor contribution of the ipsilesional hemisphere to the transected corticospinal (CS) tract, a considerable reduction of the hand representation was also observed in the ipsilesional M1. Mapping control experiments ruled out the possibility that changes of motor maps are due to variability of the intracortical microstimulation mapping technique. The extent of the size reduction of the hand area was nearly as large as in the contralesional hemisphere in two of the three monkeys. In the third monkey, it represented a reduction by a factor of half the change observed in the contralesional hemisphere. Although the hand representation was modified in the ipsilesional hemisphere, such changes were not correlated with a contribution of this hemisphere to the incomplete recovery of the manual dexterity for the hand affected by the lesion, as demonstrated by reversible inactivation experiments (in contrast to the contralesional hemisphere). Moreover, despite the size reduction of M1 hand area in the ipsilesional hemisphere, no deficit of manual dexterity for the hand opposite to the cervical hemi-section was detected.¦CONCLUSION: After cervical hemi-section, the ipsilesional motor cortex exhibited substantial reduction of the hand representation, whose extent did not match the small number of axotomized CS neurons. We hypothesized that the paradoxical reduction of hand representation in the ipsilesional hemisphere is secondary to the changes taking place in the contralesional hemisphere, possibly corresponding to postural adjustments and/or re-establishing a balance between the two hemispheres.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To understand the content of Social Representation (SR) of family caregivers of Alzheimer's disease patients. METHOD Interviews were conducted with 26 caregivers and analyzed by the ALCESTE software. RESULTS The SR content was structured in two thematic axes called Daily Life and Care and Medical and Emotional Concepts and Outcomes. The first axis creates images related to the routine of interaction with the sick person, and contains a description of care procedures, experiences, and practices applied every day. The second is composed of subjective and conceptual aspects that make up the social representation of Alzheimer's disease, with meanings related to the emotional, medical, and biological contexts. CONCLUSION Due to the importance of topics related to patients' dependence and the personal and emotional consequences of the disease, overload is the main content of the SR of Alzheimer's disease for caregivers, and the understanding of these SR by health professionals should support the planning of interventions addressing this group of individuals.
