The surface oxidation of UO2 sintered plates at 170-275 ° C was studied in situ by high temperature X-ray diffractometry. At very low oxygen concentration, UO2 is oxidized to U4O9, while at 300°C and argon-20 vol% oxygen it is oxidized up to U3O7. X-ray diffraction profiles of the UO2, U4O9 and U3O7 phases were well characterized during the transformations. The activation energy for the transformation of UO2 to U4O9, obtained from X-ray diffraction data, was found to be 117 ± 9 kJ/mol and 90 ± 14 kJ/mol for the β-(311) and α-(200) reflections, respectively. © 1991.

A comparative study using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen adsorption has been carried out in the structural characterization of silica xerogels and aerogels, obtained from tetraethoxysilane sonohydrolysis. The specific surface and the mean pore size as measured by both the techniques were found to be in notable agreement in all cases for aerogels and xerogels. According to the SAXS data, aerogels at 500 °C exhibit a mass fractal structure with fractal dimension D∼2.4 in the range between the correlation length ξ∼5.3 nm and a∼0.75 nm. An experimental method to probe the mass fractal structure of aerogels from exclusively nitrogen adsorption isotherms has been presented. For aerogels at 500 °C, we have found D∼2.4 in the range between the pore width 2rξ∼33 nm and 2ra∼4.5 nm, which is in notable agreement with the SAXS results (D ∼2.4, ξ∼5.3 nm, a∼0.75 nm) if we assign the pore width 2r probed by the Kelvin equation in the adsorption method to the Bragg distance 2π/q associated to the correlation length 1/q probed by SAXS.

The structural evolution on the drying of wet sonogels of silica with the liquid phase exchanged by acetone, obtained from tetraethoxisilane sonohydrolysis, was studied in situ by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The periods associated to the structural evolution as determined by SAXS are in agreement with those classical ones established on basis of the features of the evaporation rate of the liquid phase in the obtaining of xerogels. The wet gel can be described as formed by primary particles (microclusters), with characteristic length a ∼ 0.67 nm and surface which is fractal, linking together to form mass fractal structures with mass fractal dimension D=2.24 in a length scale ξ∼6.7 nm. As the network collapses while the liquid/vapor meniscus is kept out of the gel volume, the mass fractal structure becomes more compacted by increasing D and decreasing ξ, with smoothing of the fractal surface of the microclusters. The time evolution of the density of the wet gels was evaluated exclusively from the SAXS parameters ξ, D, and a. The final dried acetone-exchanged gel presents Porod's inhomogeneity length of about 2.8 nm and apparently exhibits an interesting singularity D →3, as determined by the mass fractal modeling used to fit the SAXS intensity data for the obtaining of the parameters ξ and D.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of some acidic drinks on dentin erosion, using methods of surface profile (SP) analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). One hundred standardized dentin slabs obtained from bovine incisor roots were used. Dentin slabs measuring 5x5 mm were ground flat, polished and half of each specimen surface was protected with nail polish. For 60 min, the dentin surfaces were immersed in 50 mL of 5 different drinks (Gatorade®, Del Valle Mais orange juice®, Coca-Cola®, Red Bull® and white wine), 20 blocks in each drink. The pH of each beverage was measured. After the erosive challenge, the nail polish was removed and SP was analyzed. The mineral concentration of dentin surfaces was determined by means of EDXRF. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). SP analysis showed that Red-Bull had the highest erosive potential (p<0.05). EDXRF results exhibited a decrease in phosphate in the groups immersed in Red-Bull, orange juice and white wine (p<0.05), and no significant difference in calcium content between the reference surface and eroded surface. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that all studied beverages promoted erosion on root dentin and Red Bull had the highest erosive potential. There was no correlation between pH of beverages and their erosive potential and only the P content changed after erosive challenge.

The present paper is a comprehensive study concerning Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, which were performed to characterize the local structure of (1 - x)Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O 3-xPbTiO3 samples as a function of temperature and PbTiO3 content. Results obtained by the fits of extended X-ray absorption fine structure consist with rhombohedral symmetry for Pb(Fe 2/3W1/3)O3 composition at temperatures lower than room temperature. This result is in apparent disagreement with X-ray and neutron diffraction characterization which have been reported. This apparent disagreement is related to the fact that XAS probes the short-range order, whereas X-ray diffraction provides structural information about the average structure. Moreover, as the PbTiO3 content increases, a disorder has been detected at local structure of the FeO6 octahedron. Analysis of X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra did not show modifications in intensity nor energy of transitions. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

In recent years, several studies have shown that concentrations of trace elements are altered in neoplastic breast tissues. However, the microenvironment and metabolic changes caused by tumors are complex and still not completely understood. Under this aspect, the combination of different techniques to investigate the role of trace elements in promoting and/or maintaining a tumor is interesting once the combination of information obtained by analytical techniques and immunohistochemical assays, associated with clinicopathological data, may allow a better metabolic understanding of trace elements in breast cancer. In this work, the role of the trace elements Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn in neoplastic breast tissues was investigated by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques and immunohistochemical assays. We determined concentrations of Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn in normal and neoplastic breast tissues using energy dispersive XRF, and these values were used to set the positive or negative expression of elements in normal and neoplastic tissues. These expressions were correlated with the spatial distributions of trace elements (evaluated by micro-XRF) and with immunoexpression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), tissue inhibitors of MMPs and vascular endothelial growth factor. The results revealed that the expression of the trace elements Fe, Cu and vascular endothelial growth factor are related, indicating that higher levels of these elements can be associated with the angiogenic process in breast cancer. Also, associations between Ca, Zn and MMPs expression have been observed, possibly because of the fact that both metals are present in these proteins. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Oxidation state and coordination of transition metal cations seems to be hard to assess when considering multiple cations, each one with different possible oxidation states. In fact, this is the case of the spineltype double oxides family. High resolution K beta X-ray fluorescence spectra were measured in Mn(2-x)V(1+4)O4 (x=0 and 1/3) spinels-type double oxides in order to determine the oxidation state and coordination of V and Mn cations. The relative intensity of radiative Auger effect KM2,3M4,5 to the total intensity and the integral absolute difference value were used as reference parameters for the characterization of Mn oxidation states. The coordination of Mn ions was inferred by the intensity of the K beta(5) line. In the case of V compounds, it was used as the intensity of the line K beta' relative to the total area of K beta region. The obtained results were further compared with X-ray absorption spectra analysis, showing good agreements regarding the oxidation state characterization. However, there were found some discrepancies in coordination, due to customary oversimplifications in the K beta(5) line origin. The obtained results might represent valuable and useful data for chemical scopes of characterizing spineltype oxides family. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Pb1-xLaxTiO3 sintered ferroelectric ceramics with x equal to 0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.30 were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The binding energy of the Ti 2p lines is consistent with only one chemical state, Ti4+. on the other hand, in the case of Pb 4f and 0 Is XPS spectra, apart from the main peaks attributed to the lattice ions, minor peaks related to the surface states were also observed. The presence of Pb-0 state on the surface of all samples was due to the reduction of lead ions caused by the preferential removal of the oxygen ions after sputtering. The non observation of Ti3+ ions confirms that the mechanism of charge compensation that should occurs owing to the substitution of Ph2+ by La3+ is due to the preferential formation of Pb site vacancies, and not to a reduction from Ti4+ to Ti3+ states. Within the limits of the present experiment, there is no evidence of the existence of non-equivalent Pb, Ti, and La sites as the Pb1-xLaxTiO3 ceramic changes from a normal to a relaxor ferroelectric state. Background The application and better understanding of traditional and new breast tumor biomarkers and prognostic factors are increasing due to the fact that they are able to identify individuals at high risk of breast cancer, who may benefit from preventive interventions. Also, biomarkers can make possible for physicians to design an individualized treatment for each patient. Previous studies showed that trace elements (TEs) determined by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques are found in significantly higher concentrations in neoplastic breast tissues (malignant and benign) when compared with normal tissues. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of TEs, determined by the use of the Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, as biomarkers and prognostic factors in breast cancer. Methods By using EDXRF, we determined Ca, Fe, Cu, and Zn trace elements concentrations in 106 samples of normal and breast cancer tissues. Cut-off values for each TE were determined through Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis from the TEs distributions. These values were used to set the positive or negative expression. This expression was subsequently correlated with clinical prognostic factors through Fisher’s exact test and chi-square test. Kaplan Meier survival curves were also evaluated to assess the effect of the expression of TEs in the overall patient survival. Results Concentrations of TEs are higher in neoplastic tissues (malignant and benign) when compared with normal tissues. Results from ROC analysis showed that TEs can be considered a tumor biomarker because, after establishing a cut-off value, it was possible to classify different tissues as normal or neoplastic, as well as different types of cancer. The expression of TEs was found statistically correlated with age and menstrual status. The survival curves estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method showed that patients with positive expression for Cu presented a poor overall survival (p < 0.001). Conclusions This study suggests that TEs expression has a great potential of application as a tumor biomarker, once it was revealed to be an effective tool to distinguish different types of breast tissues and to identify the difference between malignant and benign tumors. The expressions of all TEs were found statistically correlated with well-known prognostic factors for breast cancer. The element copper also showed statistical correlation with overall survival.

Glasses in the system xGeO(2)-(1-x)NaPO3 (0 <= x <= 0.50) were prepared by conventional melting quenching and characterized by thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. The deconvolution of the latter spectra was aided by homonuclear J-resolved and refocused INADEQUATE techniques. The combined analyses of P-31 MAS NMR and O-1s XPS lineshapes, taking charge and mass balance considerations into account, yield the detailed quantitative speciations of the phosphorus, germanium, and oxygen atoms and their respective connectivities. An internally consistent description is possible without invoking the formation of higher-coordinated germanium species in these glasses, in agreement with experimental evidence in the literature. The structure can be regarded, to a first approximation, as a network consisting of P-(2) and P-(3) tetrahedra linked via four-coordinate germanium. As implied by the appearance of P-(3) units, there is a moderate extent of network modifier sharing between phosphate and germanate network formers, as expressed by the formal melt reaction P-(2) + Ge-(4) -> P-(3) + Ge-(3). The equilibrium constant of this reaction is estimated as K = 0.52 +/- 0.11, indicating a preferential attraction of network modifier by the phosphorus component. These conclusions are qualitatively supported by Raman spectroscopy as well as P-31{Na-23} and P-31{Na-23} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR results. The combined interpretation of O-1s XPS and P-31 MAS NMR spectra shows further that there are clear deviations from a random connectivity scenario: heteroatomic P-O-Ge linkages are favored over homoatomic P-O-P and Ge-O-Ge linkages.

In the last years, extensive research has been devoted to develop novel materials and structures with high electrochemical performance for intermediate-temperatures solid-oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) electrodes. In recent works, we have investigated the structural and electrochemical properties of La0:6Sr0:4CoO3 (LSCO) and La0:6Sr0:4Co1¡yFeyO3 (LSCFO) nanostructured cathodes, finding that they exhibit excellent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction [1,2]. These materials were prepared by a pore-wetting technique using polycarbonate porous membranes as templates. Two average pore sizes were used: 200 nm and 800 nm. Our scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) study showed that the lower pore size yielded nanorods, while nanotubes were obtained with the bigger pore size. All the samples were calcined at 1000oC in order to produce materials with the desired perovskite-type crystal structure. In this work, we analyze the oxidation states of Co and Fe and the local atomic order of LSCO and LSCFO nanotubes and nanowires for various compositions. For this pur- pose we performed XANES and EXAFS studies on both Co and Fe K edges. These measurements were carried out at the D08B-XAFS2 beamline of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). XANES spectroscopy showed that Co and Fe only change slightly their oxidation state upon Fe addition. Surprisingly, XANES results indicated that the content of oxygen vacancies is low, even though it is well-known that these materials are mixed ionic-electronic conductors. EXAFS results were consistent with those expected according to the rhombohedral crystal structure determined in previous X-ray powder dffraction investigations. [1] M.G. Bellino et al, J. Am. Chem. Reactive Sputter Magnetron (RSM) is a widely used technique to thin films growing of compounds both, in research laboratories and in industrial processes. The nature of the deposited compound will depend then on the nature of the magnetron target and the nature of the ions generated in the plasma. One important aspect of the problem is the knowledge of the evolution of the film during the process of growing itself. In this work, we present the design, construction of a chamber to be installed in the Huber goniometer in the XRD2 line of LNLS in Campinas, which allows in situ growing kinetic studies of thin films.
