Harvard College quarter bills, 1812-1818

This folder contains sixteen printed Harvard College quarter bills filled out in manuscript primarily for William Croswell's use of wood.

Proposal for a translation of La Lande's Abridgement, 1812; [1818]

This folder contains two copies of a printed proposal for a translation of Jérôme Lalande's abridgement of his treatise on astronomy, as well as the 1818 Harvard Commencement Theses annotated with a handwritten note "Proposals for La Lande."

Handwritten one-page letter from J. Warren to Caleb Gannett about the charges in a quarter bill received by Warren's son. J. Warren is likely James Warren (1726-1808, Harvard AB 1745), referring to the quarter bill of his son Charles Warren (1762–1784, Harvard AB 1782).

Copy of William Watson's account for painting and glazing of Holden Chapel, September 1801

Contains an itemized list of costs for painting and glazing tasks to be completed and supplies needed by Watson for Holden Chapel. Tasks include painting Doctor Warren's room twice, painting window sashes and shutters, transporting glass from Boston, and setting each window pane. Supplies needed include oil, white lead, and putty.

Letter from William Prescott to Oliver Prescott, 1782 October 19

Two-page handwritten letter from Harvard undergraduate William Prescott to his classmate, Oliver Prescott, that chiefly describes, in florid language, the discipline received by John Rowe (Harvard AB 1783) and others from College officers for disorderly behavior.

Letters from William Tudor to his father, William Tudor,

Three letters written from London. In one, Tudor describes a debate he attended in Parliament regarding the Orders in Council and the escalating tension between the United States and England. One undated letter is missing pages, but appears to have been written some time in 1808. In it, Tudor writes at length about his unmarried sister Delia’s prospects.

Four letters written from Birmingham, England, in which Tudor suggests changes to Harvard’s grounds and facilities, hiring practices for tutors, and university publications. He also alludes to the War of 1812.
