Comparison of growth curve parameters of organs and body components in meat- (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) and laying-type (Coturnix coturnix japonica) quail show interactions between gender and genotype

The objective of this study was to estimate growth parameters of carcass components (wing, thighs and drumsticks, back and breast) and organs (heart, liver, gizzard and gut) in males and females of one meat-type quail strain (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) and two laying strains (Coturnix coturnix japonica) designated either yellow or red.A total of 1350 quail from 1 to 42d old were distributed in a completely randomised design, with 5 replicates of each strain. The carcass component weights and body organs were analysed weekly and evaluated using the Gompertz function; growth rates were evaluated through derivative equations.The meat-type strain presented the highest growth rates in carcass components and organs. Across strains, females showed the highest weight of internal organs at maturity compared to males.Females had greater growth potential in breast, wings and back than males for both yellow and red laying quail.

O papel do ensino informal de ci��ncias: uma an��lise sobre o impacto do show de energia sobre o interesse dos alunos para cursos das ��reas de ci��ncias exatas

Our work aims to discuss the teaching of science in the context of informal education. Thus, we present and analyze the results of an initiative that we have made seeking to interest high school students to study sciences and technology. The Energy shows are activities which are presented in experimental demonstrations of science concepts to middle school students. After the show the students respond to a questionnaire which formed the basis for this study. The results indicate that the achievement of shows have had an impact on students.

High Plains Ag Lab Rotations Show Fallow Still Works in Western Nebraska

The High Plains Ag Laboratory (HPAL) in Sidney, Nebraska is the dryland research site for the University of Nebraska located in the Panhandle. In addition to the typical small plot agriculture experiment areas, there is a significant dryland production area. There are a total of 718.5 acres in production, divided into 27 individual fields, ranging from the smallest unit at 19.7 acres to the largest at 36.7 acres. Within these fields there are presently seven different crop rotations, each with winter wheat as the base crop, including everything from the traditional wheat-fallow system to a continuous cropping system.

TNF blockers show distinct patterns of immune response to the pandemic influenza A H1N1 vaccine in inflammatory arthritis patients

Methods. One hundred and twenty patients (RA, n = 41; AS, n = 57; PsA, n = 22) on anti-TNF agents (monoclonal, n = 94; soluble receptor, n = 26) were compared with 116 inflammatory arthritis patients under DMARDs and 117 healthy controls. Seroprotection, seroconversion (SC), geometric mean titre, factor increase in geometric mean titre and adverse events were evaluated 21 days after vaccination. Results. After immunization, SC rates (58.2% vs 74.3%, P = 0.017) were significantly lower in SpA patients receiving anti-TNF therapy, whereas no difference was observed in RA patients receiving this therapy compared with healthy controls (P = 0.067). SpA patients receiving mAbs (infliximab/adalimumab) had a significantly lower SC rate compared with healthy controls (51.6% vs 74.3%, P = 0.002) or those on DMARDs (51.6% vs 74.7%, P = 0.005), whereas no difference was observed for patients on etanercept (86.7% vs 74.3%, P = 0.091). Further analysis of non-seroconverting and seroconverting SpA patients revealed that the former group had a higher mean age (P = 0.003), a higher frequency of anti-TNF (P = 0.031) and mAbs (P = 0.001) and a lower frequency of MTX (P = 0.028). In multivariate logistic regression, only older age (P = 0.015) and mAb treatment (P = 0.023) remained significant factors for non-SC in SpA patients. Conclusion. This study revealed a distinct disease pattern of immune response to the pandemic influenza vaccine in inflammatory arthritis patients receiving anti-TNF agents, illustrated by a reduced immunogenicity solely in SpA patients using mAbs. Do children with motor difficulties show low levels of physical fitness?

The aim of the present study was to examine whether children with motor difficulties would show levels of health-related components of physical fitness lower than children without such difficulties. Sixteen children with motor difficulties with approximately 8 years of age were age-and gender-matched with other 16 children without motor difficulties. Participants completed the test batteries for physical fitness (seat and reach, standing long jump, sit-up, modified pull-up and 9-minute run) and for motor coordination (MABC-2). The results indicated significant differences in standing long jump, sit-up, modified pull-up tests, but not for the seat and reach and the 9-minute run tests. Overall, the results are similar to those published in the international literature, with the exception of cardiorespiratory fitness. The idea that at to some degree coordination is required to perform physical fitness tasks and might impact on physical fitness performance is further discussed in the present work.

Pancreatic islets from dexamethasone-treated rats show alterations in global gene expression and mitochondrial pathways

Chronic administration of glucocorticoids (GC) leads to characteristic features of type 2 diabetes in mammals. The main action of dexamethasone in target cells occurs through modulation of gene expression, although the exact mechanisms are still unknown. We therefore investigated the gene expression profile of pancreatic islets from rats treated with dexamethasone using a cDNA array screening analysis. The expression of selected genes and proteins involved in mitochondria] apoptosis was further analyzed by PCR and immunoblotting. Insulin, triglyceride and free fatty acid plasma levels, as well as glucose-induced insulin secretion, were significantly higher in dexamethasone-treated rats compared with controls. Out of 1176 genes, 60 were up-regulated and 28 were down-regulated by dexamethasone treatment. Some of the modulated genes are involved in apoptosis, stress response, and proliferation pathways. RT-PCR confirmed the cDNA array results for 6 selected genes. Bax alpha protein expression was increased, while Bcl-2 was decreased. In vivo dexamethasone treatment decreased the mitochondrial production of NAD(P)H, and increased ROS production. Concluding, our data indicate that dexamethasone modulates the expression of genes and proteins involved in several pathways of pancreatic-islet cells, and mitochondria dysfunction might be involved in the deleterious effects after long-term GC treatment.

Il presente elaborato �� stato scritto con l���obiettivo di accendere i riflettori su un ambito che rimane spesso nell���ombra: la traduzione audiovisiva e, in particolare, la traduzione audiovisiva dell���umorismo. A fare da cornice a questo quadro �� la famosa sitcom I Robinson. La scelta del telefilm �� tutt���altro che casuale: sono proprio le sue numerose repliche, trasmesse nelle fredde serate d���inverno, che mi hanno spinta ad approfondire il tema della screen translation. Nel primo capitolo si parla della trama e dei personaggi de I Robinson accompagnati da qualche curiosit�� sul telefilm. Il secondo capitolo, invece, �� dedicato proprio alla screen translation e alla traduzione dell���umorismo nei prodotti audiovisivi. Il terzo capitolo, infine, presenta il confronto tra la versione originale e quella tradotta di alcune delle scene pi�� divertenti de I Robinson.

Humour e traduzione multimediale: analisi e proposta di sottotitolaggio del talk show russo Ve��ernij Urgant

Obiettivo di questo progetto �� stato la traduzione dello humour nei prodotti audiovisivi, attraverso il sottotitolaggio in italiano di una puntata del talk-show russo ���Ve��ernij Urgant���. Il primo capitolo �� dedicato alla descrizione dei generi televisivi, in particolare del macrogenere dell���intrattenimento, alle teorie sulla traduzione dello humour nei testi audiovisivi e alle tecniche di analisi e classifica degli elementi umoristici. Nel secondo capitolo viene presentato il format e la struttura del talk-show, la puntata scelta, la numero 403 trasmessa il 12.12.2014, e la proposta di sottotitolaggio. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo riguarda l���analisi e il commento della proposta di sottotitolaggio, le principali difficolt�� di traduzione dello humour e le strategie utilizzate per risolverle.

Putative cancer stem cells in malignant pleural mesothelioma show resistance to cisplatin and pemetrexed

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a lethal cancer of the mesothelium with high chemotherapeutic resistance via unknown mechanisms. A prevailing hypothesis states that cancer stem cells (CSCs) persist in tumors causing relapse after chemotherapy, thus, rendering these cells as critical targets responsible for tumor resistance and recurrence. We selected candidate CSC markers based on expansion under hypoxic conditions, a hallmark for the selection of chemoresistant cells; and investigated the expression of CSC markers: CD133, Bmi-1, uPAR and ABCG2 in three MPM cell lines and normal mesothelial cells by quantitative RT-PCR. Furthermore, we evaluated the chemotherapeutic resistance associated with each CSC marker by determining the change in CSC marker-mRNA levels as an index of drug-resistance following treatment with either cisplatin or pemetrexed. We demonstrate the expression of CSC markers: CD133, Bmi-1, uPAR and ABCG2 in both normal and MPM cell lines. Bmi-1+, uPAR+ and ABCG2+ cells show a distinct role in conferring chemoresistance to cisplatin and pemetrexed in the malignant setting. By contrast, these markers have no apparent participation in chemoresistance to drug treatments in normal mesothelial cells. Intriguingly, CD133 revealed chemoresistant properties in both normal mesothelial and malignant pleural mesothelioma cells. This study provides evidence of putative CSCs conferring drug-resistance to cisplatin and pemetrexed in MPM cell lines. Specific targeting of these drug-resistant cells, while considering the functional heterogeneity of the MPM subtypes, may contribute to more focused and effective chemotherapeutic regimens for malignant pleural mesothelioma.
