The two-dimensional (2D) ordering of self-assembled InxGa1-xAs quantum dots (QDs) fabricated on GaAs(3 1 1)B surface by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are reported. The QDs are aligned into rows differing from the direction of the misorientation of the substrate, and strongly dependent on the mole In content x of InxGa1-As-x solid solution. The ordering alignment deteriorates significantly as the In content is increased to above 0.5. The 2D ordering can be described as a centered rectangular unit mesh with the two sides parallel to [0 1 (1) over bar] and [(2) over bar 3 3], respectively. Their relative arrangement seems to be determined by a combination of the strongly repulsive elastic interaction between the neighboring islands and the minimization of the strain energy of the whole system. The ordering also helps to improve the size homogeneity of the InGaAs islands. The photoluminescence (PL) result demonstrates that QDs grown on (3 1 1)B have the narrowest linewidth and the strongest integrated intensity, compared to those on (1 0 0) and other high-index planes under the same condition. The initial InAs growth on InP(1 0 0) during molecular beam epitaxy has been investigated. The as-grown islands were shaped like nanowires and formed dense arrays over the entire surface in the 3-6 monolayer InAs deposition range. The wires were oriented along the [(1) over bar 1 0] direction. Transmission electron microscopy images confirm that the wires are coherently grown on the substrates. Our results suggest that the coherent wire-shaped island formation may be a possible method to fabricate self-organized InAs nanowires. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Growth mode and strain relaxation of molecular-beam-epitaxy grown InAs/InAlAs/InP (111)A system have been investigated using reflection high-energy electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. In direct contrast to the well-studied InAs/GaAs system, our experimental results show that the InAs grown on InAlAs/InP (111)A follows the Stranski-Krastanov mode. Both self-organized InAs quantum dots and relaxed InAs islands are formed depending on the InAs coverage. Intense luminescence signals from both the InAs quantum dots and wetting layer are observed. The luminescence efficiency of (111)A samples is comparable to that of (001) samples, suggesting the feasibility of fabricating quantum dot optoelectronic devices on InP (111)A surfaces. InAs self-organized quantum dots in InAlAs matrix lattice-matched to exactly oriented (001) InP substrates were grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using the Stranski-Krastanow mode. Preliminary characterizations have been performed using photoluminescence and transmission electron microscopy. The geometrical arrangement of the quantum dots is found to be strongly dependent on the amount of coverage. At low deposition thickness. InAs QDs are arranged in chains along [1(1) over bar0$] directions. Luminescence from the quantum dots and the wetting layer consisting of quantum wells with well widths of 1, 2, and 3 monolayers is observed. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.

ZnO complex 3D nano-structures have been self-organized on Al2O3 (0 0 0 1) substrate by laser molecular beam epitaxy (L-MBE). It is shown by AFM morphology that the structure is composed of ID quantum dot chains (QDCs) and larger nano-islands at the nodes of QDCs. The formation mechanism of the nano-structure is also investigated. XRD results indicate that the nano-structure is highly c-axis oriented, with the aligned in-plane oriented domains. Time-integrated photoluminescence (TIPL) of the sample shows obvious blue-shift and broadening of the near band-edge (NBE) emission at room temperature, which are related to the quantum confinement effects. Time-resolved PL (TRPL) result shows bi-exponential decay behavior of ZnO QDCs, with a fast decay time of 38.21 ps and a low decay time of 138.19ps, respectively, which is considered to be originated from the interdot coupling made by coherent emission and reabsorption of the photons in QDCs. Red shifts of emission wavelength of self-organized In(Cla)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) covered by 3 nm thick InxGa1-xAs layer with three different In mole fractions (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively) have been observed. Transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that the stress along growth direction in the InAs dots was reduced due to introducing the InxGa1-xAs (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) covering layer instead of GaAs layer. Atomic force microscopy pictures show a smoother surface of InAs islands covered by an In0.2Ga0.8As layer. It is explained by the calculations that the redshifts of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the QDs covered by the InxGa1-xAs (x greater than or equal to 0.1) layers were mainly due to the reducing of the strain other than the InAs/GaAs intermixing in the InAs QDs. The temperature dependent PL spectra further confirm that the InGaAs covering layer can effectively suppress the temperature sensitivity of PL emissions. 1.3 mum emission wavelength with a very narrow linewidth of 19.2 mcV at room temperature has been obtained successfully from In,In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs self-assembled QDs covered by a 3-nm In0.2Ga0.2As strain reducing layer. The miscibility and structure of A-B copolymer/C homopolymer blends with special interactions were studied by a Monte Carlo simulation in two dimensions. The interaction between segment A and segment C was repulsive, whereas it was attractive between segment B and segment C. In order to study the effect of copolymer chain structure on the morphology and structure of A-B copolymer/C homopolymer blends, the alternating, random and block A-B copolymers were introduced into the blends, respectively. The simulation results indicated that the miscibility of A-B block copolymer/C homopolymer blends depended on the chain structure of the A-B copolymer. Compared with alternating or random copolymer, the block copolymer, especially the diblock copolymer, could lead to a poor miscibility of A-B copolymer/C homopolymer blends. Moreover, for diblock A-B copolymer/C homopolymer blends, obvious self-organized core-shell structure was observed in the segment B composition region from 20% to 60%. However, if diblock copolymer composition in the blends is less than 40%, obvious self-organized core-shell structure could be formed in the B-segment component region from 10 to 90%. Furthermore, computer statistical analysis for the simulation results showed that the core sizes tended to increase continuously and their distribution became wider with decreasing B-segment component.

Self-assembled monolayers of 1-teradecanethiol on gold were characterized by means of FTIR-ATR measurements, XPS and contact angle measurements. Linear dichroism measurements using FTIR-ATR are used to estimate the orientation of the alkyl chains. An equation for calculating the orientation angles of the alkyls chains was deduced. The monolayer of cytochrome c oxidase maintaining physiological activity and attached covalently to the self-assembled monolayers of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) on a gold electrode was obtained. The results of cyclic voltammetry show that direct electron transfer between cytochrome c oxidase and the electrode surface is a fast and diffusionless process. MPA has a dual role as both electrode modifier and the bridging molecule which: keeps cytochrome c oxidase at an appropriate orientation without denaturation and enables direct electron transfer between the protein and the modified electrode. Immobilized cytochrome c oxidase exhibits biphasic phenomena between the concentration of the electrolyte and the normal potentials; meanwhile its electrochemical behavior is also influenced by the buffer components. The quasi-reversible electron transfer process of cytochrome c oxidase with formal potential 385 mV vs. SHE in 5mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.4) corresponds to the redox reaction of cyt a(3) in cytochrome c oxidase, and the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant obtained is 1.56 s(-1). By cyclic voltammetry measurements, it was observed that oxidation and reduction of cytochrome c in solution were catalyzed by the immobilized cytochrome c oxidase. This cytochrome c oxidase/MPA/Au system provides a good mimetic model to study the physiological functions of membrane-associated enzymes and hopefully to build a third-generation biosensor without using a mediator.

4-Aminophenol (4-AP), paracetamol (PRCT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA) (all somewhat hydrophobic compounds) were HPLC electrochemically detected while the signals from uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA) (both hydrophilic compounds at the pH studied) were minimized, taking advantage of the permselectivity of the self-assembled n-alkanethiol monolayer (C-10-SAM)-modified Au electrodes based on solute polarity, The effects of various factors, such as the chain length of the n-alkanethiol modifier, modifying time, and pH value, on the permeability of C-10-SAM coatings were examined, The calibration curves, linear response ranges, detection limits, and reproducibilities of the EC detector for 4-AP, PRCT, NE, and DA were obtained, The result shows that the EC detector can be applied in the chromatographic detection of 4-AP, PRCT, NE, and DA in urine, effectively removing the influence of UA and AA in high concentrations existing in biological samples. As a result, a great improvement in the selectivity of EC detectors has been achieved by using Au electrodes coated with neutral n-alkanethiol monolayer.

Semiconductor magnetic quantum dots are very promising structures, with novel properties that find multiple applications in spintronic devices. EuTe is a wide gap semiconductor with NaCl structure, and strong magnetic moments S=7/2 at the half filled 4f(7) electronic levels. On the other hand, SnTe is a narrow gap semiconductor with the same crystal structure and 4% lattice mismatch with EuTe. In this work, we investigate the molecular beam epitaxial growth of EuTe on SnTe after the critical thickness for island formation is surpassed, as a previous step to the growth of organized magnetic quantum dots. The topology and strain state of EuTe islands were studied as a function of growth temperature and EuTe nominal layer thickness. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) was used in-situ to monitor surface morphology and strain state. RHEED results were complemented and enriched with atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements made at the XRD2 beamline of the Brazilian Synchrotron. EuTe islands of increasing height and diameter are obtained when the EuTe nominal thickness increases, with higher aspect ratio for the islands grown at lower temperatures. As the islands grow, a relaxation toward the EuTe bulk lattice parameter was observed. The relaxation process was partially reverted by the growth of the SnTe cap layer, vital to protect the EuTe islands from oxidation. A simple model is outlined to describe the distortions caused by the EuTe islands on the SnTe buffer and cap layers. The SnTe cap layers formed interesting plateau structures with easily controlled wall height, that could find applications as a template for future nanostructures growth. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. This thesis presents the versatile synthesis and self-organization of C3-symmetric discotic nanographene molecules as well as their potential applications as materials in molecular electronics. The details can be described as follows: 1) A novel synthetic strategy towards properly designed C3 symmetric 1,3,5-tris-2’arylbenzene precursors has been developed. After the final planarization by treatment with FeCl3 under mild conditions, for the first time, it became possible to access a variety of new C3-symmetric hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) and a series of triangle-shaped nanographenes. D3 symmetric HBC with three alkyl substituents and C2 symmetric HBC with two alkyl substituents were synthesized and found to show the surprising decrease of isotropic points., the self-assembly at the liquid-solid interface displayed a unique zigzag and flower patterns. 2) Triangle-shaped discotics revealed a unique self-assembly behavior in solution, solid state as well as at the solution-substrate interface. A mesophase stability over the broad temperature range with helical supramoelcular arrangement were observed in the bulk state. The honeycomb pattern as the result of novel self-assembly was presented. Triangle-shaped discotics with swallow alkyl tails were fabricated into photovoltaic devices, the supramolecular arrangement upon thermal treatment was found to play a key role in the improvement of solar efficiency. 3) A novel class of C3 symmetric HBCs with alternating polar/apolar substituents was synthesized. Their peculiar self-assembly in solution, in the bulk and on the surface were investigated by NMR techniques, X-ray diffraction as well as different electron microscope techniques. 4) A novel concept for manipulating the intracolumnar stacking of discotics and thus for controlling the helical pitch was presented. A unique staggered stacking in the column was achieved for the first time. Theoretical simulations confirmed this self-organization and predicted that this packing should show the highest charge carrier mobility for all discotics.

This thesis presents a detailed and successful study of molecular self-assembly on the calcite CaCO3(10-14) surface. One reason for the superior applicability of this particular surface is given by reflecting the well-known growth modes. Layer-by-layer growth, which is a necessity for the formation of templated two-dimensional (2D) molecular structures, is particularly favoured on substrates with a high surface energy. The CaCO3(10-14) surface is among those substrates and, thus, most promising. rnrnAll experiments in this thesis were performed using the non-contact atomic force microscope (NC-AFM) under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The acquisition of drift-free data became in this thesis possible owing to the herein newly developed atom-tracking system. This system features a lateral tip-positioning precision of at least 50pm. Furthermore, a newly developed scan protocol was implemented in this system, which allows for the acquisition of dense three-dimensional (3D) data under room-temperature conditions. An entire 3D data set from a CaCO3(10-14) surface consisting of 85x85x500 pixel is discussed. rnrnThe row-pairing and (2x1) reconstructions of the CaCO3(10-14) surface constitute most interesting research subjects. For both reconstructions, the NC-AFM imaging was classified to a total of 12 contrast modes. Eight of these modes were observed within this thesis, some of them for the first time. Together with literature findings, a total of 10 modes has been observed experimentally to this day. Some contrast modes presented themselves as highly distance-dependent and at least for one contrast mode, a severe tip-termination influence was found. rnrnMost interestingly, the row-pairing reconstruction was found to break a symmetry element of the CaCO3(10-14) surface. With the presence of this reconstruction, the calcite (10-14) surface becomes chiral. From high-resolution NC-AFM data, the identification of the enantiomers is here possible and is presented for one enantiomer in this thesis. rnrnFive studies of self-assembled molecular structures on calcite (10-14) surfaces are presented. Only for one system, namely HBC/CaCO3(10-14), the formation of a molecular bulk structure was observed. This well-known occurence of weak molecule-insulator interaction hinders the investigation of two-dimensional molecular self-assembly. It was, however, possible to force the formation of an island phase for this system upon following a variable-temperature preparation. rnFor the C60/CaCO3(10-14) system it is most notably that no branched island morphologies were found. Instead, the first C60 layer appeared to wet the calcite surface. rnrnIn all studies, the molecules arranged themselves in ordered superstructures. A templating effect due to the underlying calcite substrate was evident for all systems. This templating strikingly led either to the formation of large commensurate superstructures, such as (2x15) with a 14 molecule basis for the C60/CaCO3(10-14) system, or prevented the vast growth of incommensurate molecular motifs, such as the chicken-wire structure in the trimesic acid (TMA)/CaCO3(10-14) system. rnrnThe molecule-molecule and the molecule-substrate interaction was increased upon choosing molecules with carboxylic acid moieties in the third, fourth and fifth study, using terephthalic acid, TMA and helicene molecules. In all these experiments, hydrogen-bonded assemblies were created. rnrnDirected hydrogen bond formation combined with intermolecular pi-pi interaction is employed in the fifth study, where the formation of uni-directional molecular "wires" from single helicene molecules succeeded. Each "wire" is composed of heterochiral helicene pairs, well-aligned along the [01-10] substrate direction and stabilised by pi-pi interaction.
