Room-temperature zinc ion-conducting molten electrolytes based on acetamide, urea, and zinc perchlorate or zinc triflate have been prepared and characterized by various physicochemical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The ternary molten electrolytes are easy to prepare and can be handled under ambient conditions. They show excellent stability, high ionic conductivity, relatively low viscosity, and other favorable physicochemical and electrochemical properties that make them good electrolytes for rechargeable zinc batteries. Specific conductivities of 3.4 and 0.5 mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C are obtained for zinc-perchlorate-and zinc-triflate-containing melts, respectively. Vibrational spectroscopic data reveal that the free ion concentration is high in the optimized composition. Rechargeable Zn batteries have been assembled using the molten electrolytes, with gamma-MnO2 as the positive electrode and Zn as the negative electrode. They show excellent electrochemical characteristics with high discharge capacities. This study opens up the possibility of using acetamide-based molten electrolytes as alternate electrolytes in rechargeable zinc batteries. (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society.

An analysis of the recently reported cDNA derived amino acid sequences of mouse (Kleene and Flynn, J. Biol. Chem. , 17272–17277, 1987) and rat (Luersson Image ,Nucl. Acids Res. Image , 3585, 1989). TP2 has revealed the presence of two potential zinc finger motifs involving cysteine and histidine residues. TP2, as purified from rat elongating spermatids, is shown here to contain 0.2 atoms of zinc bound per molecule of the protein by atomic absorption spectroscopy. On incubation with 10 μM ZnCl2, Image , and subsequent exhaustive dialysis, TP2 had 2 atoms of zinc bound per molecule. The involvement of cysteine residues of TP2 in coordination with zinc was also suggested by the observation that TP2 could be labeled, Image , with iodoacetamidofluorescein only after preincubation of spermatid nuclei with EDTA. The zinc finger domains of TP2 may play an important role in initiation of chromatin condensation and /or cessation of transcriptional activity during mammalian spermiogenesis. Spectroscopic and electrochemical redox properties of a series of fluorinated porphyrins bearing donor-acceptor groups and their Zn(II) and Cu(II) derivatives are presented. The magnitude of the ring reduction potentials and charge transfer properties derived from spectral data depend on the nature and position of the substituent(s), (nitro/dimethylamino) and the central metal ions.

Zinc micro and nanostructures were synthesized in vacuum by condensing evaporated zinc on Si substrate at different gas pressures. The morphology of the grown Zn structures was found to be dependent on the oxygen partial pressure. Depending on oxygen partial pressure it varied from two-dimensional microdisks to one-dimensional nanowire. The morphology and structural properties of the grown micro and nanostructures were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on the grown Zn nanowires have shown that they exhibit core/shell-like structures, where a thin ZnO layer forms the shell. A possible growth mechanism behind the formation of different micro and nanostructures has been proposed. In addition, we have synthesized ZnO nanocanal-like structures by annealing Zn nanowires in vacuum at 350 °C for 30 min.

A structure-based approach has been adopted to develop 2'substituted analogs of triclosan. The Cl at position 2' in ring B of triclosan was chemically substituted with other functional groups like NH2, NO2 and their inhibitory potencies against PfENR were determined. The binding energies of the 2' substituted analogs of triclosan for enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (ENR) of Plasmodium falciparum were determined using Autodock. Based on the autodock results, we synthesized the potential compounds. The IC50 and inhibition constant (K-i) of 2' substituted analogs of triclosan were determined against purified PfENR. Among them, two compounds,2-(2'-Amino-4'-chloro-phenoxy)-5-chloro-phenol (compound 4) and 5-chloro-2-(4'-chloro-2'-nitro-phenoxy)-phenol) (compound 5) exhibited good potencies. Compound 4 followed uncompetitive inhibition kinetics with crotonoyl CoA and competitive with NADH. It was shown to have an IC50 of 110 nM; inhibition constant was 104 nM with the substrate and 61 nM with the cofactor. IC50 Of compound 5 was determined to be 229 nM. Compounds 4 and 5 showed significant inhibition of the parasite growth in P. falciparum culture. (C) 2009 IUBMB IUBMB Life, 61(11):1083-1091, 2009.

A solvothermal reaction of ZnO, boric acid (B(OH)(3)), and aliphatic airlines in a water-pyridine mixture gave four zinc borate phases of different dimensionalities: [Zn(B4O8H2)(C3H10N2)], I (one-dimensional); [Zn(B4O8H2)(C3H10N2)] H2O, II (two-dimensional); [Zn(B5O10H3)(C10H24N4)]center dot H2O, III (two-dimensional): and [Zn-2(B8O15H2)(C3H10N2)(2)], IV (three-dimensional). The structures are formed by the connectivity involving polyborate chains and layers with Zn2+ species. In all the compounds, the amine molecules act its file ligand binding either the same or different zn centers. The formation of two different structures, II and IV, from the same amine by varying the reaction time is noteworthy. Transformation studies on II indicate that the formation of IV. from II, is facile and has been investigated for the first time. Two of file compounds, I and III, exhibit activity for second-order nonlinear optical behavior. The UV exposure of the sample indicates the absorption of all the UV radiation suggesting that the zinc borate compounds could be exploited for UV-blocking applications. The compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis, photoluminescence, and NMR studies.

A three-dimensional zinc arsenate with an interrupted zeolitic framework (-IIO), [C4N3H16](2)[Zn-5(AsO4)(4)(HAsO4)(2)], I has been synthesized solvothermally. The structure is built up from ZnO4, AsO4 and HAsO4 tetrahedral units connected alternatively through their vertices forming the 3-D structure possessing one-dimensional channels bound by 10 T-atoms (T = Zn, As), The framework density of the structure is 10.4 T-atoms which indicates considerable openness in its structure. The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is used for a comparative study of low-lying excitations in trans-polyacetylene (t-PA) and transversely substituted t-PA (TS-t-PA). We have employed the Pariser-Parr-Pople model Hamiltonian which incorporates long-range electronic correlations to model these systems. We find some fundamental differences in the excited states of the t-PA and TS-t-PA. We find that the lowest two-photon allowed excited state in TS-t-PA is not made up of two triplet excitons and the gap to this state is nonzero even for undimerized chains in the thermodynamic limit. Contrary to earlier results for the Hubbard model, we find that the lowest two-photon state is always below the first optically allowed state in all the systems studied here making TS-t-PA systems only weakly fluorescent materials. Nonresonant tumbling averaged linear and third harmonic generation optic coefficients of TS-t-PA systems are also much smaller than that of t-PA.

In each of the zinc(II) complexes bis(acetylacetonato-kappa(2)O,O')(1,10-phenanthroline-kappa(2)N,N')zinc(II), [Zn(C(5)H(7)O(2))(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))], (I), and bis(acetylacetonato-kappa(2)O,O')(2,2'-bipyridine-kappa(2)N,N')zinc(II), [Zn(C(5)H(7)O(2))(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))], (II), the metal center has a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. Compound (I) has crystallographically imposed twofold symmetry, with Z' = 0.5. The presence of a rigid phenanthroline group precludes intramolecular hydrogen bonding, whereas the rather flexible bipyridyl ligand is twisted to form an intramolecular C-H...O interaction [the chelated bipyridyl ligand is nonplanar, with the pyridyl rings inclined at an angle of 13.4 (1) degrees]. The two metal complexes are linked by dissimilar C-H...O interactions into one-dimensional chains. The present study demonstrates the distinct effects of two commonly used ligands, viz. 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridine, on the structures of metal complexes and their assembly.

Sol-gel route was employed to grow polycrystalline thin films of Li-doped ZnO thin films (Zn1-xLixO, x=0.15). Polycrystalline films were obtained at a growth temperature of 400-500 degrees C. Ferroelectricity in Zn0.85Li0.15O was verified by examining the temperature variation of the real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, and from the C-V measurements. The phase transition temperature was found to be 330 K. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor were 15.5 and 0.09 respectively, at a frequency of 100 kHz. The films exhibited well-defined hysteresis loop, and the values of spontaneous polarization (P-s) and coercive field were 0.15 mu C/cm(2) and 20 kV/cm, respectively, confirming the presence of ferroelectricity.

The objective of the present study is to develop the reaction mechanism and kinetics of photoreduction of NO by CO. For this purpose, the reactions were conducted in the presence of Pd-ion-substituted nano-TiO2, Ti1-xPdxO2-delta, which was synthesized via a solution combustion method. The photocatalytic activity was investigated with unsubstituted TiO2, 1% Pd/TiO2(imp), and Ti1-xPdxO2-delta (where x = 0.05-0.3). No appreciable NO conversion was observed over unsubstituted TiO2, although, despite competitive adsorption of NO and CO on the Pd2+ sites, there was a significant reduction of NO over Ti1-xPdxO2-delta. The kinetic model showed that the enhanced catalytic activity is due to the NO photodissociation at the oxide-ion vacancy.

We report here, the study carried out on piezoelectric thin film for MEMS/Microsensor applications. The study includes characterization of sputtered thin film using indirect methods and comparison of behavior using cantilever technique for the confirmation of piezoelectric property. A suitable experimental setup was designed and fabricated for subjecting the cantilever to vibrate. The data was recorded for piezoelectric thin films deposited with different compositions. It is clearly evident that the direct method is inexpensive and easier for determining the quality of the deposited piezoelectric thin film.

Phase-singular solid solutions of La0.6Sr0.4Mn1-yMeyO3 (0 <= y <= 0.3) [Me=Li1+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ti4+, Nb5+, Mo6+ or W6+] [LSMey] perovskite of rhombohedral symmetry (space group: R (3) over barc) have been prepared wherein the valence of the diamagnetic substituent at Mn site ranged from 1 to 6. With increasing y-content in LSMey, the metal-insulator (TM-I) transition in resistivity-temperature rho(T) curves shifted to low temperatures. The magnetization studies M(H) as well as the M(T) indicated two groups for LSMey. (1) Group A with Me=Mg, Al, Ti, or Nb which are paramagnetic insulators (PIs) at room temperature with low values of M (< 0.5 mu(B)/Mn); the magnetic transition [ferromagnetic insulator (FMI)-PI] temperature (T-C) shifts to low temperatures and nearly coincides with that of TM-I and the maximum magnetoresistance (MR) of similar to 50% prevails near T-C (approximate to TM-I). (2) Group-B samples with Me=Li, Mo, or W which are FMIs with M-s=3.3-3.58 mu(B)/Mn and marginal reduction in T-C similar to 350 K as compared to the undoped LSMO (T-C similar to 378 K). The latter samples show large temperature differences Delta T=T-c-TM-I, reaching up to similar to 288 K. The maximum MR (similar to 60%) prevails at low temperatures corresponding to the M-I transition TM-I rather than around T-C. High resolution lattice images as well as microscopy analysis revealed the prevalence of inhomogeneous phase mixtures of randomly distributed charge ordered-insulating (COI) bistripes (similar to 3-5 nm width) within FMI charge-disordered regions, yet maintaining crystallographically single phase with no secondary precipitate formation. The averaged ionic radius < r(B)>, valency, or charge/radius ratio < CRR > cannot be correlated with that of large Delta T; hence cannot be used to parametrize the discrepancy between T-C and TM-I. The M-I transition is controlled by the charge conduction within the electronically heterogeneous mixtures (COI bistripes+FMI charge disordered); large MR at TM-I suggests that the spin-ordered FM-insulating regions assist the charge transport, whereas the T-C is associated with the bulk spin ordered regions corresponding to the FMI phase of higher volume fraction of which anchors the T-C to higher temperatures. The present analysis showed that the double-exchange model alone cannot account for the wide bifurcation of the magnetic and electric transitions, contributions from the charge as well as lattice degrees of freedom to be separated from spin/orbital ordering. The heterogeneous phase mixtures (COI+FMI) cannot be treated as of granular composite behavior. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.
