We consider canonical systems with singular left endpoints, and discuss the concept of a scalar spectral measure and the corresponding generalized Fourier transform associated with a canonical system with a singular left endpoint. We use the framework of de Branges’ theory of Hilbert spaces of entire functions to study the correspondence between chains of non-regular de Branges spaces, canonical systems with singular left endpoints, and spectral measures.
We find sufficient integrability conditions on a Hamiltonian H which ensure the existence of a chain of de Branges functions in the first generalized Pólya class with Hamiltonian H. This result generalizes de Branges’ Theorem 41, which showed the sufficiency of stronger integrability conditions on H for the existence of a chain in the Pólya class. We show the conditions that de Branges came up with are also necessary. In the case of Krein’s strings, namely when the Hamiltonian is diagonal, we show our proposed conditions are also necessary.
We also investigate the asymptotic conditions on chains of de Branges functions as t approaches its left endpoint. We show there is a one-to-one correspondence between chains of de Branges functions satisfying certain asymptotic conditions and chains in the Pólya class. In the case of Krein’s strings, we also establish the one-to-one correspondence between chains satisfying certain asymptotic conditions and chains in the generalized Pólya class.

Fuzzy-reasoning theory is widely used in industrial control. Mathematical morphology is a powerful tool to perform image processing. We apply fuzzy-reasoning theory to morphology and suggest a scheme of fuzzy-reasoning morphology, including fuzzy-reasoning dilation and erosion functions. These functions retain more fine details than the corresponding conventional morphological operators with the same structuring element. An optical implementation has been developed with area-coding and thresholding methods. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

Sufficient conditions are derived for the validity of approximate periodic solutions of a class of second order ordinary nonlinear differential equations. An approximate solution is defined to be valid if an exact solution exists in a neighborhood of the approximation.
Two classes of validity criteria are developed. Existence is obtained using the contraction mapping principle in one case, and the Schauder-Leray fixed point theorem in the other. Both classes of validity criteria make use of symmetry properties of periodic functions, and both classes yield an upper bound on a norm of the difference between the approximate and exact solution. This bound is used in a procedure which establishes sufficient stability conditions for the approximated solution.
Application to a system with piecewise linear restoring force (bilinear system) reveals that the approximate solution obtained by the method of averaging is valid away from regions where the response exhibits vertical tangents. A narrow instability region is obtained near one-half the natural frequency of the equivalent linear system. Sufficient conditions for the validity of resonant solutions are also derived, and two term harmonic balance approximate solutions which exhibit ultraharmonic and subharmonic resonances are studied.

In this thesis, a collection of novel numerical techniques culminating in a fast, parallel method for the direct numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flows around surfaces immersed in unbounded fluid domains is presented. At the core of all these techniques is the use of the fundamental solutions, or lattice Green’s functions, of discrete operators to solve inhomogeneous elliptic difference equations arising in the discretization of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unbounded regular grids. In addition to automatically enforcing the natural free-space boundary conditions, these new lattice Green’s function techniques facilitate the implementation of robust staggered-Cartesian-grid flow solvers with efficient nodal distributions and fast multipole methods. The provable conservation and stability properties of the appropriately combined discretization and solution techniques ensure robust numerical solutions. Numerical experiments on thin vortex rings, low-aspect-ratio flat plates, and spheres are used verify the accuracy, physical fidelity, and computational efficiency of the present formulations.

The objective of this dissertation is to study the theory of distributions and some of its applications. Certain concepts which we would include in the theory of distributions nowadays have been widely used in several fields of mathematics and physics. It was Dirac who first introduced the delta function as we know it, in an attempt to keep a convenient notation in his works in quantum mechanics. Their work contributed to open a new path in mathematics, as new objects, similar to functions but not of their same nature, were being used systematically. Distributions are believed to have been first formally introduced by the Soviet mathematician Sergei Sobolev and by Laurent Schwartz. The aim of this project is to show how distribution theory can be used to obtain what we call fundamental solutions of partial differential equations.

To better address the charter and party boat fishery needs in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, fishery managers must understand the linkages between the industry and other groups and organizations that affect its success. Gulf state charter and party boat operators were interviewed to ascertain the extent of their social network linkages, membership in community organizations, business community relationships, and linkages to information sources. Approximately one-third to one-half of the charter and party boat operators did not belong to local community organizations that could assist their business through tourism promotion or natural resource protection. Despite their limited integration in the community, the vast majority of operators gave and received referrals from other businesses. Of four major information sources, the National Weather Service and the County Marine Extension agents were rated highest and lowest, respectively, in mean importance to charter and party boat operators. Results suggest that business success can be enhanced by strengthening network ties between operators and local businesses, chambers of commerce, and tourism organizations. For this to occur, individual operators and charter/party boat organizations need to become more effective in representing industry interests. Informational linkages between industry and govemment agencies also need improvement.
