A series of novel cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes bearing 2,4-diphenylquinoline ligands with fluorinated substituent were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and mass spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry, absorption, emission and electroluminescent properties of these complexes were systematically investigated. Electrochemical studies showed that the oxidation of the fluorinated complexes occurred at more positive potentials (in the range 0.57-0.69 V) than the unfluorinated complex 1 (0.42 V). In view of the energy level, the lowering of the LUMO by fluorination is significantly less than that of the HOMO. The weak and low energies absorption bands in the range of 300-600 nm are well resolved, likely associated with MLCT and (3)pi-pi* transitions. These complexes show strong orange red emission both in the solution and solid state. The emission maxima of the fluorinated complexes showed blue shift by 9, 24 and 15 nm for 2, 3 and 4, respectively, with respect to the unfluorinated analogous 1. Multilayered organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by using the complexes as dopant materials. Significantly higher performance and lower turn-on voltage were achieved using the fluorinated complexes as the emitter than that using the unfluorinated counterpart 1 under the same doping level.

A new multifunctional multilayer films consisting of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Rubpy) and sodium decatungstate (W-10) have been prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly method on ITO substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) confirmed the existence of W10 and Rubpy. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV-Vis spectroscopy demonstrated the uniform assembly of (W-10/Rubpy) multilayer films. The multilayer films possess electrocatalytic activities on the reduction of iodate and oxidation of oxalate. Moreover, the films exhibited electrochemiluminescence (ECL) with tripropylamine (abbreviated as TPA) as the coreactant and the ECL response was proportional to the number of (W-10/Rubpy) layers. These characteristics of the multilayer films might find potential applications in the field of sensors and materials fields.

A novel functionalized inorganic-organic hybrid material with cation exchange property was prepared by sol-gel method. The H2O2 biosensor was fabricated by simply dipping the horseradish peroxidase-containing functionalized membrane modified electrode into Meldola's blue (MDB) solution. MDB was adsorbed and firmly immobilized within the membrane. The electrochemical behavior of MDB incorporated in the membrane was more reversible compared with that of the solution species and suitable as mediator for the horseradish peroxidase. The response time was less than 25 s. Linear range is up to 0.6 mM (COH. coeff. 0.9998) with detection Limit of 9 x 10(-7) M. High sensitivity of 75 nA mu M cm(-2) was obtained due to high MDB-loading. The biosensor exhibited a good stability. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline (PAn) with different molecular weight was prepared by adding organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or THF into the polymerization mixture. Open-circuit potential measurements showed that the polymerization rate was lowered by the addition of the organic solvent Spectral studies showed that PAn intermediate before the oxidant was consumed was pernigraniline and it was reduced to emeraldine base rapidly by aniline in the termination period. A mechanism of chain propagation was proposed. Chain propagation and autoacceleration period were almost independent of addition of pernigraniline, and the autoacceleration of aniline polymerization is due to more rapid initiation rate. Chemically modified electrodes prepared by treating the cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin modified glassy-carbon electrode at 750-degrees (HCME) are shown to catalyze the electrooxidation of hydrazine. The oxidation occurred at +0.63 V vs. Ag/AgCl (saturated potassium chloride) in pH 2.5 media. The catalytic response is evaluated with respect to solution pH, potential scan-rate, concentration dependence and flow-rate. The catalytic stability of the HCME is compared with that of the cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin adsorbed glassy-carbon electrode. The stability of the HCME was excellent in acidic solution and even in solutions containing organic solvent (50% CH3OH). When used as the sensing electrode in amperometric detection in flow-injection analysis, the HCME permitted sensitive detection of hydrazine at 0.5 V. The limit of detection was 0.1 ng. The linear range was from 50 ng to 2.4-mu-g. The method is very sensitive and selective.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), stable carbon isotopic (delta(13)C) compositions of DOC and particulate organic carbon (POC), and elemental C/N ratios of POC were measured for samples collected from the lower Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers and adjacent coastal waters in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the low flow season in June 2000 and high flow season in April 2001. These isotopic and C/N results combined with DOC measurements were used to assess the sources and transport of terrestrial organic matter from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers to the coastal region in the northern Gulf of Mexico. delta(13)C values of both POC (-23.8parts per thousand to -26.8parts per thousand) and DOC (-25.0parts per thousand to -29.0parts per thousand) carried by the two rivers were more depleted than the values measured for the samples collected in the offshore waters. Strong seasonal variations in delta(13)C distributions were observed for both POC and DOC in the surface waters of the region. Fresh water discharge and horizontal mixing played important roles in the distribution and transport of terrestrial POC and DOC offshore. Our results indicate that both POC and DOC exhibited non-conservative behavior during the mixing especially in the mid-salinity range. Based on a simple two end-member mixing model, the comparison of the measured DOC-delta(13)C with the calculated conservative isotopic mixing curve indicated that there was a significant in situ production of marine-derived DOC in the mid- to high-salinity waters consistent with our in situ chlorophyll-a measurements. Our DOC-delta(13)C data suggest that a removal of terrestrial DOC mainly occurred in the high-salinity (>25) waters during the mixing. Our study indicates that the mid- to high- (10-30) salinity range was the most dynamic zone for organic carbon transport and cycling in the Mississippi River estuary. Variability in isotopic and elemental compositions along with variability in DOC and POC concentrations suggest that autochthonous production, bacterial utilization, and photo-oxidation could all play important roles in regulating and removing terrestrial DOC in the northern Gulf of Mexico and further study of these individual processes is warranted. Copper nanoparticles were deposited onto mesoporous SBA-15 support via two different routes: post-grafting method and incipient wet impregnation method. Both XRD and TEM reveal that the post-grafting can make Cu particles very small in size and highly dispersed into channels of SBA-15, while the impregnation method mainly forms large Cu particles on the external surface of SBA-15. TPR experiments show that CuO species formed by the post-grafting method is more reducible than that prepared by the impregnation method. The catalytic activity tests for CO oxidation manifests that the sample prepared by the post-grafting method has a much higher activity than that prepared by the impregnation method, with a lowering of 50 degrees C for T-50, showing a strong dependence of catalytic activity on the size and dispersion of Cu particles. Besides the preparation procedure, other factors including calcination temperature, reduction treatment, copper loading as well as the feed composition, have an important effect on the catalytic activity. The best performance was obtained when the catalyst was calcined at 500 degrees C and reduced at 550 degrees C. The calcination and reduction treatment at high temperature have been found to be necessary to completely remove the organic residue and to generate active metallic copper particles. Acetone is an important oxygenated volatile organic compound (OVOC) in the troposphere where it influences the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere. However, the air-sea flux is not well quantified, in part due to a lack of knowledge regarding which processes control oceanic concentrations, and, specifically whether microbial oxidation to CO2 represents a significant loss process. We demonstrate that 14C labeled acetone can be used to determine microbial oxidation to 14CO2. Linear microbial rates of acetone oxidation to CO2 were observed for between 0.75-3.5 h at a seasonally eutrophic coastal station located in the western English Channel (L4). A kinetic experiment in summer at station L4 gave a Vmax of 4.1 pmol L-1 h-1, with a Km constant of 54 pM. We then used this technique to obtain microbial acetone loss rates ranging between 1.2 and 42 pmol L-1 h-1.(monthly averages) over an annual cycle at L4, with maximum rates observed during winter months. The biological turnover time of acetone (in situ concentration divided by microbial oxidation rate) in surface waters varied from ~3 days in February 2011, when in situ concentrations were 3 ± 1 nM, to >240 days in June 2011, when concentrations were more than twofold higher at 7.5 ± 0.7 nM. These relatively low marine microbial acetone oxidation rates, when normalized to in situ concentrations, suggest that marine microbes preferentially utilize other OVOCs such as methanol and acetaldehyde.

The abundance of ammonia-oxidising bacterial (AOB) and ammonia-oxidising archaeal (AOA) (amoA) genes and ammonia oxidation rates were compared bimonthly from July 2008 to May 2011 in 4 contrasting coastal sediments in the western English Channel. Despite a higher abundance of AOA amoA genes within all sediments and at all time-points, rates of ammonia oxidation correlated with AOB and not AOA amoA gene abundance. Sediment type was a major factor in determining both AOB amoA gene abundance and AOB community structure, possibly due to deeper oxygen penetration into the sandier sediments, increasing the area available for ammonia oxidation. Decreases in AOB amoA gene abundance were evident during summer and autumn, with maximum abundance and ammonia oxidation rates occurring in winter and early spring. PCR-DGGE of AOB amoA genes indicated that no seasonal changes to community composition occurred; however, a gradual movement in community composition occurred at 3 of the sites studied. The lack of correlation between AOA amoA gene abundance and ammonium oxidation rates, or any other environmental variable measured, may be related to the higher spatial variation amongst measurements, obscuring temporal trends, or the bimonthly sampling, which may have been too infrequent to capture temporal variability in the deposition of fresh organic matter. Alternatively, AOA may respond to changing substrate concentrations by an increase or decrease in transcript rather than gene abundance.

Biotransformations of a series of ortho-, meta- and para-substituted ethylbenzene and propylbenzene substrates have been carried out, using Pseudomonas putida UV4, a source of toluene dioxygenase (TDO). The ortho- and para-substituted alkylbenzene substrates yielded, exclusively, the corresponding enantiopure cis-dihydrodiols of the same absolute configuration. However, the meta isomers, generally, gave benzylic alcohol bioproducts, in addition to the cis-dihydrodiols (the meta effect). The benzylic alcohols were of identical (R) absolute configuration but enantiomeric excess values were variable. The similar (2R) absolute configurations of the cis-dihydrodiols are consistent with both the ethyl and propyl groups having dominant stereodirecting effects over the other substituents. The model used earlier, to predict the regio- and stereo-chemistry of cis-dihydrodiol bioproducts derived from substituted benzene substrates has been refined, to take account of non-symmetric subsituents like ethyl or propyl groups. The formation of benzylic hydroxylation products, from meta-substituted benzene substrates, without further cis-dihydroxylation to yield triols provides a further example of the meta effect during toluene dioxygenase-catalysed oxidations.

Toluene- and naphthalene-dioxygenase-catalysed sulfoxidation of nine disubstituted methylphenyl sulfides, using whole cells of Pseudomonas putida, consistently gave the corresponding enantioenriched sulfoxides. Using the P. putida UV4 mutant strain, and these substrates, differing proportions of the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol sulfides were also isolated. Evidence was found for the concomitant dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation and sulfoxidation of methyl paratolyl sulfide. A simultaneous stereoselective reductase-catalysed deoxygenation of (S)-methyl para-tolyl sulfoxide, led to an increase in the proportion of the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol sulfide. The enantiopurity values and absolute configurations of the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites from methyl ortho-and para-substituted phenyl sulfides were determined by different methods, including chemoenzymatic syntheses from the cis-dihydrodiol metabolites of para-substituted iodobenzenes. Further evidence was provided to support the validity of an empirical model to predict, (i) the stereochemistry of cis-dihydroxylation of para-substituted benzene substrates, and (ii) the regiochemistry of cis-dihydroxylation reactions of ortho-substituted benzenes, each using toluene dioxygenase as biocatalyst.

The direct electrochemical oxidation of ammonia has been examined in both the organic solvent dimethylformamide (DMF) and the room temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)]. The corresponding voltammetric responses have been shown to be similar in each solvent with a broad oxidative wave occurring upon the introduction of ammonia to the solution and the appearance of a new reductive wave following the oxidation. The oxidative reaction process has been examined and a suitable reaction pathway has been deduced, corresponding to the formation of ammonium cations after oxidation of the ammonia. A linear response of limiting current against vol% ammonia was observed in both DMF and [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)], suggesting potential application for analytical methods.

Ta2O5-SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and tantalum (V) ethoxide as the sources of silicon and tantalum, and two families of quaternary ammonium salts, [CnH(2n+1)(CH3)(3)N]Br (n = 14, 16, 18) and [(CnH(2n+1))(4)N]Br (n = 10, 12, 16, 18) as surfactants. The catalysts were compared for the selective suffoxidation of 4,6-dimethyl-2-thiomethylpyrimidine using peroxide as an oxidising agent in a range of ionic liquids and organic solvents. The sol-gel catalysts were also compared with tantalum on MCM-41 prepared by grafting. The catalysts were characterized from adsorption-desorption isotherms of N-2, XRD patterns, small-angle X-ray scattering, IR spectra from adsorbed pyridine and CDCl3, XPS spectra, and Si-29 magic angle spinning (MAS) NNIR experiments. The effect of recycling on the catalyst leaching and selectivity/activity was also studied. High activities and selectivities were found in [NTf2](-) based ionic liquids and organic solvents with good recyclability of the catalyst. Tantalum was found in the solution after reaction; however, this was determined to be due to entrapment of catalyst particulates, as opposed to leaching of the active metal. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc.
