Electricity is regarded as one of the indispensable means to growth of any country’s economy. This source of power is the heartbeat of everything from the huge metropolitans, industries, worldwide computer networks and our global communication systems down to our homes. Electrical energy is the lifeline for any economic and societal development of a region or country. It is central to develop countries for maintaining acquired life styles and essential to developing countries for industrialisation and escaping poverty.

In this paper, we analyze the performance limits of the slotted CSMA/CA mechanism of IEEE 802.15.4 in the beacon-enabled mode for broadcast transmissions in WSNs. The motivation for evaluating the beacon-enabled mode is due to its flexibility for WSN applications as compared to the non-beacon enabled mode. Our analysis is based on an accurate simulation model of the slotted CSMA/CA mechanism on top of a realistic physical layer, with respect to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard specification. The performance of the slotted CSMA/CA is evaluated and analyzed for different network settings to understand the impact of the protocol attributes (superframe order, beacon order and backoff exponent) on the network performance, namely in terms of throughput (S), average delay (D) and probability of success (Ps). We introduce the concept of utility (U) as a combination of two or more metrics, to determine the best offered load range for an optimal behavior of the network. We show that the optimal network performance using slotted CSMA/CA occurs in the range of 35% to 60% with respect to an utility function proportional to the network throughput (S) divided by the average delay (D).

The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol proposes a flexible communication solution for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPAN) including wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It presents the advantage to fit different requirements of potential applications by adequately setting its parameters. When in beaconenabled mode, the protocol can provide timeliness guarantees by using its Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) mechanism. However, power-efficiency and timeliness guarantees are often two antagonistic requirements in wireless sensor networks. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and propose a methodology for setting the relevant parameters of IEEE 802.15.4-compliant WSNs that takes into account a proper trade-off between power-efficiency and delay bound guarantees. First, we propose two accurate models of service curves for a GTS allocation as a function of the IEEE 802.15.4 parameters, using Network Calculus formalism. We then evaluate the delay bound guaranteed by a GTS allocation and express it as a function of the duty cycle. Based on the relation between the delay requirement and the duty cycle, we propose a power-efficient superframe selection method that simultaneously reduces power consumption and enables meeting the delay requirements of real-time flows allocating GTSs. The results of this work may pave the way for a powerefficient management of the GTS mechanism in an IEEE 802.15.4 cluster.

Due to the application of active components into antennas these became a source of distortion on wireless communication systems. In this paper we explore the nonlinear effects occurring in a frequency reconfigurable antenna operating with a PIN Diode. We describe the measurement setup used to check the antenna intermodulation products and the measured compression and third order intermodulation limitations of a frequency reconfigurable antenna, operating at the UMTS and WLAN frequencies.

In video communication systems, the video signals are typically compressed and sent to the decoder through an error-prone transmission channel that may corrupt the compressed signal, causing the degradation of the final decoded video quality. In this context, it is possible to enhance the error resilience of typical predictive video coding schemes using as inspiration principles and tools from an alternative video coding approach, the so-called Distributed Video Coding (DVC), based on the Distributed Source Coding (DSC) theory. Further improvements in the decoded video quality after error-prone transmission may also be obtained by considering the perceptual relevance of the video content, as distortions occurring in different regions of a picture have a different impact on the user's final experience. In this context, this paper proposes a Perceptually Driven Error Protection (PDEP) video coding solution that enhances the error resilience of a state-of-the-art H.264/AVC predictive video codec using DSC principles and perceptual considerations. To increase the H.264/AVC error resilience performance, the main technical novelties brought by the proposed video coding solution are: (i) design of an improved compressed domain perceptual classification mechanism; (ii) design of an improved transcoding tool for the DSC-based protection mechanism; and (iii) integration of a perceptual classification mechanism in an H.264/AVC compliant codec with a DSC-based error protection mechanism. The performance results obtained show that the proposed PDEP video codec provides a better performing alternative to traditional error protection video coding schemes, notably Forward Error Correction (FEC)-based schemes. Following targeted advertising and product placement, TV and online media needs more personalised methods of engaging viewers by integrating advertising and informational messages into playout content, whether real-time broadcast or on-demand. Future advertising solutions need adaptivity to individuals or on-line groups to respond to the commercial requirements of clients and agencies.

Signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) performance of a multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband system with residual timing offset is investigated. To do so, an exact mathematical derivation of the SIR of this system is derived. It becomes obvious that, unlike a cyclic prefixing based system, a zero padding based system is sensitive to residual timing offset.

O projeto foi realizado na Toyota (divisão fabril de Ovar), no ano letivo 2014/2015, teve por base um estágio extracurricular que foi realizado para que desta forma tomasse contacto com uma realidade concreta e absoluta no contexto empresarial. O estágio serviu, principalmente, como uma experiência na compreensão do funcionamento de uma indústria de automóveis. Este projeto desenvolve-se no âmbito do 2ºano do Mestrado de Logística e apresenta os contributos desenvolvidos no departamento de logística para a reorganização da mesma para a produção de um novo modelo automóvel. Atualmente, a Toyota, para os modelos de automóveis que produz, recebe os componentes em CKD (Completed Knocked Down) provenientes do Japão em lotes de cinco unidades. Estes lotes são armazenados no armazém, de onde só saem quando for dada ordem para serem produzidos. Cada lote tem várias caixas, que são colocadas à vez numa zona comum de abertura. São retidos os componentes das caixas CKD e colocados nos transportadores próprios dos postos correspondentes (supermercado de linha). Isto significa que sempre que é solicitado uma viatura de um determinado lote, são obrigados a produzir as cinco unidades. Isto significa que as restantes unidades do lote terão que ficar em parque aberto a aguardar venda futura, para além de ter um stock desnecessário, estas unidades ficam vulneráveis e sofrem desgaste, pois estão expostas à intempérie, causando graves problemas de qualidade e respetivos custos associados. Recentemente, foi decidida a produção do modelo Land Cruiser 70 na unidade industrial de Ovar, Portugal, o que obrigou a uma reorganização da produção e processos logísticos para a sua produção. Os objetivos que a empresa pretende com a entrada de um novo projeto Land Cruiser 70, são os seguintes: Alterar o sistema de abastecimento, implementando o abastecimento unitário em toda a fábrica para o novo modelo, garantindo o “one by one production”; Definir o funcionamento do processo logístico desde a chegada dos componentes até ficarem disponíveis no supermercado de linha. Para isso será necessário dimensionar armazém e zona de abertura, definir layouts e quantidade de stocks, bem como definir sistemas de comunicação entre abertura e supermercado; Verificar as peças que vão fazer parte do chassi por posto e contabilizar os dolly´s1 necessários; Fazer o layout de abastecimento da linha do chassi; Calcular o tempo de abertura, de abastecimento e de picking do chassi e de triming. Este projeto tem em conta a política de melhoria contínua de forma a conseguir satisfazer o cliente (ser eficaz) utilizando cada vez menos recursos quer físicos quer humanos (ser eficiente, detetar e eliminar os desperdícios). O presente projeto foi inserido na equipa de melhoria contínua da logística, maioritariamente no chassi. Em termos globais, os objetivos propostos neste estágio foram atingidos com êxito.

Die vorliegende Arbeit wurde als Projekt bei der Media & Communication Systems (MCS) GmbH Sachsen-Anhalt in der Abteilung Hörfunk angefertigt und baut auf der vorangegangenen Praktikumsarbeit auf, in der bereits die Vorauswahl des Mischpultes diskutiert wurde. Sie beschäftigt sich mit der Modernisierung der Produktionsregie - die Regie 3 - im Landesfunkhaus des MDR in Magdeburg. In Ihr werden allgemeine Anforderungen an eine Produktionsregie im Hörfunkbereich aufgelistet, die anschließend auf die zu modernisierende Anlage bezogen werden. Es folgt eine Beschreibung der Neugestaltung und der damit verbundenen Ideen. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt dabei auf der technischen Ausstattung und der neuen Möbelgestaltung.

Durant els últims anys la demanda de filtres pas banda de ràdio freqüència, de reduïdes dimensions, lleugers i d'elevades prestacions destinats a sistemes de comunicacions inalàmbriques s'ha incrementat de forma significativa. Aquests sistemes principalment són els sistemes de telefonia mòbil de tercera generació UMTS y el sistema de navegació GPS. Els filtres actuals, basats en ressonadors SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave), tenen unes dimensions reduïdes però estan limitats en freqüència (3 GHz) i la seva tecnologia no és compatible amb les tecnologies estàndards de circuits integrats. Per aquestes raons s'espera que els filtres basats en ressonadors BAW (Bulk Acoustic Wave) substitueixin als SAW. Els dos tenen dimensions similars, però els filtres BAW poden funcionar a freqüències superiors a 3 GHz, poden treballar amb nivells de potència majors, i és important destacar el fet que la seva tecnologia és compatible amb les tecnologies estàndards de circuits integrats. La investigació en l'àmbit dels filtres BAW s'ha centrat en millorar els processos tecnològics i la qualitat dels materials, però s'ha treballat poc en l'adaptació de les tècniques sistemàtiques de disseny de filtres a les particularitats d'aquesta tecnologia, per tant el principal objectiu d'aquest treball és presentar mètodes sistemàtics per al disseny de filtres BAW, centrant-se en l'estudi d’estructures apilades.
