Polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films(similar to 10 mu m) were grown from dichlorosilane by a rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition (RTCVD) technique, with a growth rate up to 100 Angstrom/s at the substrate temperature (T-s) of 1030 degrees C. The average grain size and carrier mobility of the films were found to be dependent on the substrate temperature and material. By using the poly-Si films, the first model pn(+) junction solar cell without anti-reflecting (AR) coating has been prepared on an unpolished heavily phosphorus-doped Si wafer, with an energy conversion efficiency of 4.54% (AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm(2), 1 cm(2)).

Baryon magnetic moments of p, n, Sigma(+), Sigma(-), Xi(0), Xi(-) and the beta decay ratios (G(A)/G(V)) of n -> p, Sigma(-) -> n and Xi(0) -> Sigma(+) are calculated in a colored quark cluster model. With SU(3) breaking, the model gives a good fit to the experimental values of those baryon magnetic moments and the beta decay ratios. Our results show that the orbital motion has a significant contribution to the spin and magnetic moments of those baryons and the strange component. in nucleon is small.

KCrF3 has been systematically investigated by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital method within the generalized gradient approximation and the local spin density approximation plus the on-site Coulomb repulsion approach. The total energies for ferromagnetic and three different antiferromagnetic configurations are calculated in the high-temperature tetragonal and low-temperature monoclinic phases, respectively.

Novel microstructured and pH sensitive poly(acryliac acid-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (P(AA-co-HEMA)/PVA) interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel films were prepared by radical precipitation copolymerization and sequential IPN technology. The first P(AA-co-HEMA) network was synthesized in the present of IPN aqueous solution by radical initiating, then followed by condensation reaction (Glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent) within the resultant latex, it formed multiple IPN microstructured hydrogel film. The film samples were characterized by IR, SEM and DSC. Swelling and deswelling behaviors and mechanical property showed the novel multiple IPN nanostuctured film had rapid response and good mechanical property. The IPN films were studied as controlled drug delivery material in different pH buffer solution using cationic compound, crystal violet as a model drug.

In this paper, hydrothermal synthesized Fe3O4 microspheres have been encapsulated with nonporous silica and a further layer of ordered mesoporous silica through a simple sol-gel process. The surface of the outer silica shell was further functionalized by the deposition of YVO4:Eu3+ phosphors, realizing a sandwich structured material with mesoporous, magnetic and luminescent properties. The multifunctional system was used as drug carrier to investigate the storage and release properties using ibuprofen (IBU) as model drug by the surface modification. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N-2 adsorption/desorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) were used to characterized the samples.

Through electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, negatively charged calf thymus double stranded DNA (CTds-DNA), and positively charged Zr4+ ions were alternately deposited on gold substrate modified with chemisorbed cysteamine. Thus-prepared three-dimensional DNA networks were characterized by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS). SPR spectroscopy indicates that the effective thickness of DNA monolayer in the (DNA/Zr4+), bilayer was 1.5 +/- 0.1 nm, which corresponds to the surface coverage of 79% of its full packed monolayer. At the same time, a linear increase of film thickness with increasing number of layers was also confirmed by SPR characterizations. The data of XPS and IR-RAS show that Zr4+ ions interact with both the phosphate groups and nitrogenous bases of DNA and load into the framework of DNA. Furthermore, the interactions between this composite film and heme protein cytochrome c (Cyt c) were investigated by SPR spectroscopy and electrochemistry.

Compared with the adsorption of Cyt c on DNA monolayer, this composite multilayer film can obviously enhance the amount of immobilized Cyt c confirmed by SPR reflectivity-incident angle (R-theta) curves.

We demonstrated in this paper an electrospinning technique could be employed to prepare the single layer macroporous films and fibrous networks of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). A crucial element using electrospinning on the development of these electrospun structures was to shorten the distance of from the needle tip to the collector (L), which resulted in the bond of the wet fibers deposited on the collector at the junctions. The morphologies and average pore size of electrospun structures of PVA were mainly predominated by L and the time of collecting wet fibers on the collector. In addition, experimental results showed that an increase of the PVA concentration or a decrease of the applied voltage could also diminish slightly the average pore size of electrospun productions. Furthermore, a 60 degrees C absolute ethanol soak to PVA electrospun production led them to be able to stabilize in water for 1 month against disintegration. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the 60 degrees C ethanol soak enhanced the degree of crystallinity of PVA production. The structural characteristic of macroporous films and networks in combination with their easy processability suggests potential utility in issue engineering applications.

Direct electrochemistry of hemoglobin was observed in stable thin film composed of a natural lipid (egg-phosphatidylcholine) and hemoglobin on pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrode. Hemoglobin in lipid films shows thin layer electrochemistry behavior. The formal potential Edegrees' of hemoglobin in the lipid film was linearly varied with pH in the range from 3.5 to 7.0 with a slope of -46.4 mV pH(-1) Hemoglobin in the lipid film exhibited elegant catalytic activity for electrochemical reduction of H202, based which a unmediated biosensor for H2O2 was developed.

Copper phthalocyanine derivative Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were prepared by vertical dipping and horizontal lifting methods. Molecular orientation of copper phthalocyanine derivative in thin films was studied by polarized UV-Vis spectra. The relationship between the molecular orientation of copper phthalocyanine in LB films and their gas-sensing properties was investigated.

Magnetic microsphere comprises a magnetically responsive metal or metal oxide core surrounded by a polymer shell with active groups. Nowadays, methods of directly coating polymer, monomer polymerazation, impregnation, extrusion and biological synthesis are generally used to prepare magnetic particles. This kind of superparamagnetic microspheres can be attached to chemical, biochemical and biological substances by their active groups, then applying a magnetic field to separate from the media. Preparation and utilization of magnetic microspheres in immunoassay, nucleic acid hybrization assay, gene sequencing, cell isolation, enzyme immoblization, receptor isolation and other Gelds are reviewed with 44 references in this paper. Also, the further development is outlooked.

Three organo-soluble polyimide powders have been synthesized. Their imidization was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The amorphous morphology of their thin films were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyimide thin films were prepared by solution casting or spin coating. UV-visible transmission spectra of thin films revealed that they are almost transparent in the range of visible light. With in-plane orientation, revealed by FTIR spectra, negative birefringence (Delta n) of thin films were observed, and refractive indices of the thin films along the film plane (n(TE)) and normal to the plane (n(TM)) were measured by a prism coupler. Because of negative birefringence of the thin films, they tan be substituted for the compensation films for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to extend their viewing angles. In this paper, a 90 degrees C TN-LCD and 120 degrees C TN-LCD were taken as examples to show the compensation effect of thin films of a qualified polyimide. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. A nanocomposite of nanometer-sized magnetic granular epsilon-FeXN embedded in a nonmagnetic amorphous boron nitride matrix was prepared by ball milling mixture of alpha-Fe and hexagonal boron nitride in argon atmosphere. The grain size of the epsilon-FeXN alloy was about 10-20 nm. The nitrogen concentration in the epsilon-FeXN alloy increases with extending milling time. Both thermodynamic calculation and the present experiment show that iron and nitrogen atoms have higher alloying driving force than iron and boron atoms. Analyses of thermodynamics and kinetics about formation of the epsilon-FeXN alloy suggested that the formation of the epsilon-FeXN alloy is related to amorphization of the hexagonal boron nitride and refinement of the alpha-Fe. II was found from the present experiment that a critical grain size of the alpha-Fe reacting with nitrogen in the amorphous boron nitride is about 8 nm.

The monolayer and deposition behaviour of a symmetrically substituted copper tetra-4-(2, 4-di-t-amylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (tapCuPc) and an asymmetrically substituted copper [tri-4-(2, 4-di-t-amylphenoxy)-mono-4-(-2-methoxyethoxy)]phthalocyanine (AsyCuPc) were investigated. The results on monolayer behaviour and spectroscopic characterization of the LB films show that both CuPc molecules in a monolayer at the air-water interface and the LB films are stacked and inclined. The gas-sensitive properties show that the responding speed of AsyCuPc LB film is faster than that of tapCuPc LB film.
