Sorption of phenanthrene on agricultural soils

Polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) sorption to soil is a key process deciding the transport and fate of PAH, and potential toxic impacts in the soil and groundwater ecosystems, for example in connection with atmospheric PAH deposition on soils. There are numerous studies on PAH sorption in relatively low organic porous media such as urban soils and groundwater sediments, but less attention has been given to cultivated soils. In this study, the phenanthrene partition coefficient, KD (liter per kilogram), was measured on 143 cultivated Danish soils (115 topsoils, 0–0.25-m soil depth and 28 subsoils, 0.25–1-m depth) by the single-point adsorption method. The organic carbon partition coefficient, KOC (liter per kilogram) for topsoils was found generally to fall between the KOC values estimated by the two most frequently used models for PAH partitioning, the Abdul et al. (Hazardous Waste & Hazardous Materials 4(3):211– 222, 1987) model and Karickhoff et al. (Water Research 13:241–248, 1979) model. A less-recognized model by Karickhoff (Chemosphere 10:833–846, 1981), yielding a KOC of 14,918 Lkg−1, closely corresponded to the average measured KOC value for the topsoils, and this model is therefore recommended for prediction of phenanthrene mobility in cultivated topsoils. For lower subsoils (0.25–1-m depth), the KOC values were closer to and mostly below the estimate by the Abdul et al. (Hazardous Waste & Hazardous Materials 4(3):211–222, 1987) model. This implies a different organic matter composition and higher PAH sorption strength in cultivated topsoils, likely due to management effects including more rapid carbon turnover. Finally, we applied the recent Dexter et al. (Geoderma 144:620–627, 2008) theorem, and calculated the complexed organic carbon and non-complexed organic carbon fractions (COC and NCOC, grams per gram). Multiple regression analyses showed that the NCOC-based phenanthrene partition coefficient (KNCOC) could be markedly higher than the COCbased partition coefficient (KCOC) for soils with a clay/OC ratio <10. This possibly higher PAH sorption affinity to the NCOC fraction needs further investigations to develop more realistic and accurate models for PAH mobility and effects in the environment, also with regard to colloid-facilitated PAH transport.

Quantificação de polifosfatos no bacalhau. Validação de um método de análise

O bacalhau (Gadus morhua) faz parte da dieta alimentar dos portugueses há vários séculos, sendo atualmente, um dos maiores consumidores deste peixe a nível mundial. Após o processo de salga, esta espécie possui características únicas como a consistência, cheiro, paladar e cor amarela. É precisamente devido à coloração do peixe que alguns produtores da Islândia, Noruega e Dinamarca requisitaram às autoridades da União Europeia (UE) a aprovação da utilização de polifosfatos no processo de salga húmida do bacalhau. Os polifosfatos são aditivos alimentares bastante usados no processamento do pescado pois previnem a oxidação dos lípidos e proteínas do músculo do bacalhau, evitando assim a indesejada mudança de cor do peixe. Apesar dos esforços da Associação dos Industriais do Bacalhau (AIB) e do governo português para a rejeição da proposta nórdica, tal não se verificou. Deste modo, no início do próximo ano já será possível a venda na UE de bacalhau com fosfatos. A quantificação do teor de fosfatos no bacalhau é geralmente efetuada por Espetrofotometria de absorção molecular no ultravioleta-visível (UV-Visível). Esta quantificação é baseada no método de determinação do fósforo total, através da hidrólise dos fosfatos a ortofosfatos com posterior medição da cor amarela, gerada pela reação destes com uma solução de molibdato-vanadato. O objetivo desta dissertação foi a validação de um método de análise para a quantificação dos polifosfatos no bacalhau. O método validado foi o descrito na norma NP 4495 para produtos de pesca e aquicultura. O desenvolvimento deste trabalho foi realizado em laboratório acreditado para águas e produtos alimentares (Equilibrium - Laboratório de Controlo de Qualidade e de Processos Lda, L0312). Foi ainda determinada a influência do teor de cloreto de sódio na quantificação dos polifosfatos e o teor de humidade, uma vez que este pode afetar o produto durante a sua comercialização. No processo de validação do método foram estudados diversos parâmetros, tais como a seletividade, linearidade, sensibilidade, limite de quantificação e precisão. Pela análise dos resultados obtidos conclui-se que o método para determinação de fosfatos no bacalhau se encontra validado, uma vez que satisfaz todas as especificações determinadas para cada parâmetro de validação avaliado.

Real-Time Tariffs for Electric Vehicles in Wind Power based Power Systems

The use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) will change significantly the planning and management of power systems in a near future. This paper proposes a real-time tariff strategy for the charge process of the EVs. The main objective is to evaluate the influence of real-time tariffs in the EVs owners’ behaviour and also the impact in load diagram. The paper proposes the energy price variation according to the relation between wind generation and power consumption. The proposed strategy was tested in two different days in the Danish power system. January 31st and August 13th 2013 were selected because of the high quantities of wind generation. The main goal is to evaluate the changes in the EVs charging diagram with the energy price preventing wind curtailment.

Specification and testing of multiplicative time-varying GARCH models with applications

In this article, we develop a specification technique for building multiplicative time-varying GARCH models of Amado and Teräsvirta (2008, 2013). The variance is decomposed into an unconditional and a conditional component such that the unconditional variance component is allowed to evolve smoothly over time. This nonstationary component is defined as a linear combination of logistic transition functions with time as the transition variable. The appropriate number of transition functions is determined by a sequence of specification tests. For that purpose, a coherent modelling strategy based on statistical inference is presented. It is heavily dependent on Lagrange multiplier type misspecification tests. The tests are easily implemented as they are entirely based on auxiliary regressions. Finite-sample properties of the strategy and tests are examined by simulation. The modelling strategy is illustrated in practice with two real examples: an empirical application to daily exchange rate returns and another one to daily coffee futures returns.

Identificación del virus causal de diseños cloróticos en ciruelos

En el área frutícola que rodea la ciudad de Córdoba, de Colonia Caroya y Jesús María, se encontraron síntomas foliares cloróticos (líneas, manchas, diseños de hojas de encina) asimilables a los inducidos por tres virus causales de "diseños cloróticos lineares" en ciruelo (plum line pattern ilarvirus), el Danish plum line pattern ilarvirus (un serotipo del prunus necrotic ring spot ilarvirus), el European plum line pattern ilarvirus (un serotipo de apple mosaic ilarvirus) ambos serológicamente relacionados pero no idénticos, y el American plum line pattern ilarvirus, serológicamente no relacionados con los anteriores. Si bien no producen una sintomatología llamativa son causales de pérdidas en las cosechas por disminución del número de frutos producidos. El propósito del proyecto es definir la identidad del virus causal de los síntomas encontrados y ajustar una técnica serológica que permita su detección en plantas con infecciones sistémicas recientes, útil para ser empleada en material bajo cuarentenas (aduanas), en censos, controles sanitarios en viveros y para la elección de plantas madres de sanidad controlada.
