The conventional, geometrically lumped description of the physical processes inside a high shear granulator is not reliable for process design and scale-up. In this study, a compartmental Population Balance Model (PBM) with spatial dependence is developed and validated in two lab-scale high shear granulation processes using a 1.9L MiPro granulator and 4L DIOSNA granulator. The compartmental structure is built using a heuristic approach based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, which includes the overall flow pattern, velocity and solids concentration. The constant volume Monte Carlo approach is implemented to solve the multi-compartment population balance equations. Different spatial dependent mechanisms are included in the compartmental PBM to describe granule growth. It is concluded that for both cases (low and high liquid content), the adjustment of parameters (e.g. layering, coalescence and breakage rate) can provide a quantitative prediction of the granulation process.

The aorta has been viewed as a passive distribution manifold for blood whose elasticity allows it to store blood during cardiac ejection (systole), and release it during relaxation (diastole). This capacitance, or compliance, lowers peak cardiac work input and maintains peripheral sanguine irrigation throughout the cardiac cycle. The compliance of the human and canine circulatory systems have been described either as constant throughout the cycle (Toy et al. 1985) or as some inverse function of pressure (Li et al. 1990, Cappelo et al. 1995). This work shows that a compliance value that is higher during systole than diastole (equivalent to a direct function of pressure) leads to a reduction in the energetic input to the cardiovascular system (CV), even when accounting for the energy required to change compliance. This conclusion is obtained numerically, based on a 3-element lumped-parameter model of the CV, then demonstrated in a physical model built for the purpose. It is then shown, based on the numerical and physical models, on analytical considerations of elastic tubes, and on the analysis of arterial volume as a function of pressure measured in vivo (Armentano et al. 1995), that the mechanical effects of a presupposed arterial contraction are consistent with those of energetically beneficial changes in compliance during the cardiac cycle. Although the amount of energy potentially saved with rhythmically contracting arteries is small (mean 0.55% for the cases studied) the importance of the phenomenon lies in its possible relation to another function of the arterial smooth muscle (ASM): synthesis of wall matrix macromolecules. It is speculated that a reduction in the rate of collagen synthesis by the ASM is implicated in the formation of arteriosclerosis. ^

A high frequency physical phase variable electric machine model was developed using FE analysis. The model was implemented in a machine drive environment with hardware-in-the-loop. The novelty of the proposed model is that it is derived based on the actual geometrical and other physical information of the motor, considering each individual turn in the winding. This is the first attempt to develop such a model to obtain high frequency machine parameters without resorting to expensive experimental procedures currently in use. The model was used in a dynamic simulation environment to predict inverter-motor interaction. This includes motor terminal overvoltage, current spikes, as well as switching effects. In addition, a complete drive model was developed for electromagnetic interference (EMI) analysis and evaluation. This consists of the lumped parameter models of different system components, such as cable, inverter, and motor. The lumped parameter models enable faster simulations. The results obtained were verified by experimental measurements and excellent agreements were obtained. A change in the winding arrangement and its influence on the motor high frequency behavior has also been investigated. This was shown to have a little effect on the parameter values and in the motor high frequency behavior for equal number of turns. An accurate prediction of overvoltage and EMI in the design stages of the drive system would reduce the time required for the design modifications as well as for the evaluation of EMC compliance issues. The model can be utilized in the design optimization and insulation selection for motors. Use of this procedure could prove economical, as it would help designers develop and test new motor designs for the evaluation of operational impacts in various motor drive applications.

This thesis deals with the evaporation of non-ideal liquid mixtures using a multicomponent mass transfer approach. It develops the concept of evaporation maps as a convenient way of representing the dynamic composition changes of ternary mixtures during an evaporation process. Evaporation maps represent the residual composition of evaporating ternary non-ideal mixtures over the full range of composition, and are analogous to the commonly-used residue curve maps of simple distillation processes. The evaporation process initially considered in this work involves gas-phase limited evaporation from a liquid or wetted-solid surface, over which a gas flows at known conditions. Evaporation may occur into a pure inert gas, or into one pre-loaded with a known fraction of one of the ternary components. To explore multicomponent masstransfer effects, a model is developed that uses an exact solution to the Maxwell-Stefan equations for mass transfer in the gas film, with a lumped approach applied to the liquid phase. Solutions to the evaporation model take the form of trajectories in temperaturecomposition space, which are then projected onto a ternary diagram to form the map. Novel algorithms are developed for computation of pseudo-azeotropes in the evaporating mixture, and for calculation of the multicomponent wet-bulb temperature at a given liquid composition. A numerical continuation method is used to track the bifurcations which occur in the evaporation maps, where the composition of one component of the pre-loaded gas is the bifurcation parameter. The bifurcation diagrams can in principle be used to determine the required gas composition to produce a specific terminal composition in the liquid. A simple homotopy method is developed to track the locations of the various possible pseudo-azeotropes in the mixture. The stability of pseudo-azeotropes in the gas-phase limited case is examined using a linearized analysis of the governing equations. Algorithms for the calculation of separation boundaries in the evaporation maps are developed using an optimization-based method, as well as a method employing eigenvectors derived from the linearized analysis. The flexure of the wet-bulb temperature surface is explored, and it is shown how evaporation trajectories cross ridges and valleys, so that ridges and valleys of the surface do not coincide with separation boundaries. Finally, the assumption of gas-phase limited mass transfer is relaxed, by employing a model that includes diffusion in the liquid phase. A finite-volume method is used to solve the system of partial differential equations that results. The evaporation trajectories for the distributed model reduce to those of the lumped (gas-phase limited) model as the diffusivity in the liquid increases; under the same gas-phase conditions the permissible terminal compositions of the distributed and lumped models are the same.

Diatom assemblages from 228 core-top samples were investigated to determine the modern geographic distributions of 10 major open ocean species or species groups in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean. Our study gives a more comprehensive view of the relationships between diatom distribution and environmental pressures than previous studies, as our modern database covers a much wider area, and additionally highlights the relationships with sea ice cover and concentration. The 10 species or species categories can mainly be lumped into three groupings. First, a cool open ocean grouping composed of Rhizosolenia pointed group, Thalassiosira gracilis group and Trichotoxon reinboldii with maximum relative abundances occurring within the maximum winter sea-ice edge. Second, a pelagic open ocean grouping composed of Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassiosira lentiginosa, Thalassiosira oliverana and Thalassiothrix spp. group with maximum occurrences at the Antarctic Polar Front. Third, a warm open ocean grouping with maximum abundances observed within the Polar Front Zone and composed of the Rhizosolenia rounded group, the Thalassionema nitzschioides var. nitzschioides group and the Thalassionema nitzschioides var. lanceolata. Comparisons of the abovementioned 10 species or species groups with modern February sea-surface temperatures and sea-ice duration and concentration reveal species-specific sedimentary distributions regulated both by sea-surface temperatures and sea ice conditions that support the use of diatom remains to reconstruct past variations of these environmental parameters via qualitative and transfer function approaches.

Les enjeux hydrologiques modernes, de prévisions ou liés aux changements climatiques, forcent l’exploration de nouvelles approches en modélisation afin de combler les lacunes actuelles et d’améliorer l’évaluation des incertitudes. L’approche abordée dans ce mémoire est celle du multimodèle (MM). L’innovation se trouve dans la construction du multimodèle présenté dans cette étude : plutôt que de caler individuellement des modèles et d’utiliser leur combinaison, un calage collectif est réalisé sur la moyenne des 12 modèles globaux conceptuels sélectionnés. Un des défis soulevés par cette approche novatrice est le grand nombre de paramètres (82) qui complexifie le calage et l’utilisation, en plus d’entraîner des problèmes potentiels d’équifinalité. La solution proposée dans ce mémoire est une analyse de sensibilité qui permettra de fixer les paramètres peu influents et d’ainsi réduire le nombre de paramètres total à caler. Une procédure d’optimisation avec calage et validation permet ensuite d’évaluer les performances du multimodèle et de sa version réduite en plus d’en améliorer la compréhension. L’analyse de sensibilité est réalisée avec la méthode de Morris, qui permet de présenter une version du MM à 51 paramètres (MM51) tout aussi performante que le MM original à 82 paramètres et présentant une diminution des problèmes potentiels d’équifinalité. Les résultats du calage et de la validation avec le « Split-Sample Test » (SST) du MM sont comparés avec les 12 modèles calés individuellement. Il ressort de cette analyse que les modèles individuels, composant le MM, présentent de moins bonnes performances que ceux calés indépendamment. Cette baisse de performances individuelles, nécessaire pour obtenir de bonnes performances globales du MM, s’accompagne d’une hausse de la diversité des sorties des modèles du MM. Cette dernière est particulièrement requise pour les applications hydrologiques nécessitant une évaluation des incertitudes. Tous ces résultats mènent à une amélioration de la compréhension du multimodèle et à son optimisation, ce qui facilite non seulement son calage, mais également son utilisation potentielle en contexte opérationnel.

This paper deals with the development of an advanced parametrical modelling concept for packaging components of a 24 GHz radar sensor IC used in automotive driver assistance systems. For fast and efficient design of packages for system-in-package modules (SiP), a simplified model for the description of parasitic electromagnetic effects within the package is desirable, as 3-D field computation becomes inefficient due to the high density of conductive elements of the various signal paths in the package. By using lumped element models for the characterization of the conductive components, a fast indication of the design's signal-quality can be gained, but so far does not offer enough flexibility to cover the whole range of geometric arrangements of signal paths in a contemporary package. This work pursues to meet the challenge of developing a flexible and fast package modelling concept by defining parametric lumped-element models for all basic signal path components, e.g. bond wires, vias, strip lines, bumps and balls. © Author(s) 2011. Após todo o processo referente ao Mestrado em Ensino da Educação Física nos Ensinos Básico e Secundário, que tomou parte numa escola secundária no concelho da Amadora, mais especificamente, na Brandoa, Escola Secundária Fernando Namora, no ano letivo de 2011/2012, serve este relatório para dar como finda esta etapa. Este Estágio teve em atenção o Guia de Estágio Pedagógico, do qual constam quatro áreas: 1. Organização e Gestão do Ensino e da Aprendizagem (Área 1); 2. Inovação e Investigação Pedagógica (Área 2); 3. Participação na Escola (Área 3); 4. Relação com a Comunidade (Área 4). Assim, e tendo em conta as competências aglomeradas nestas quatro áreas de referência, foi desenvolvido, ao longo do ano letivo, um projeto com uma turma de 7º ano da já referida escola – Escola Secundária Fernando Namora. Deste relatório constarão as principais análises e reflexões, referentes a todo o trabalho desenvolvido (estratégias, obstáculos, dificuldades, relacionamento, entre outros.), ao longo do ano letivo. Finalmente, apresentarei a reflexão crítica, que pretenderá demonstrar o papel que este Estágio teve na minha formação, tanto pessoal como profissional.

Efficient numerical models facilitate the study and design of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), stacks, and systems. Whilst the accuracy and reliability of the computed results are usually sought by researchers, the corresponding modelling complexities could result in practical difficulties regarding the implementation flexibility and computational costs. The main objective of this article is to adapt a simple but viable numerical tool for evaluation of our experimental rig. Accordingly, a model for a multi-layer SOFC surrounded by a constant temperature furnace is presented, trained and validated against experimental data. The model consists of a four-layer structure including stand, two interconnects, and PEN (Positive electrode-Electrolyte-Negative electrode); each being approximated by a lumped parameter model. The heating process through the surrounding chamber is also considered. We used a set of V-I characteristics data for parameter adjustment followed by model verification against two independent sets of data. The model results show a good agreement with practical data, offering a significant improvement compared to reduced models in which the impact of external heat loss is neglected. Furthermore, thermal analysis for adiabatic and non-adiabatic process is carried out to capture the thermal behaviour of a single cell followed by a polarisation loss assessment. Finally, model-based design of experiment is demonstrated for a case study.

This paper describes a method to automatically obtain, from a set of impedance measurements at different frequencies, an equivalent circuit composed of lumped elements based on the vector fitting algorithm. The method starts from the impedance measurement of the circuit and then, through the recursive use of vector fitting, identifies the circuit topology and the component values of lumped elements. The method can be expanded to include other components usually used in impedance spectroscopy. The method is firstly described and then two examples highlight the robustness of the method and showcase its applicability.

En el presente artículo se describe el procedimiento utilizado para actualizar el mapa de uso y cobertura de la tierra de Costa Rica para el año 1992. En el proceso se integró la cartografía análoga existente para 1985 a escala 1:200.000 e imágenes digitales del Mapeador Temático de LANDSAT para los años 1991 y 1993. Para comprobar la exactitud de la clasificación se usaron 1.372 puntos obtenidos de fotos aéreas de 1992 y trabajo de campo empleando un Sistema de Posicionamiento Global (SPG). Los resultados obtenidos indican que existe un 46.6% del país bajo pastos, un 32,9 bajo bosques y un 8,5% bajo uso agrícola. Un 7,8% del área se incluyó en una categoría denominada <<no clasificada, usos mezclados, deforestada>>. La exactitud global de la clasificación fue de un 74%; con una confusión entre pasto y bosque de un 19%. SUMMARY The objective of this paper is to describe the process used by the authors to update the preliminary 1985 land use-land cover map of Costa Rica. Paper maps of 1985 at scale 1:200.000 we digitized, rasterized and use to label the output of a nonsupervised classification carried out using 1991-93 digital data from LANDSAT 5 (Thematic Mapper). Aerial photography and field work aided by a Global Positional System (GPS) was used to gather ground-truth data. A total of 1372 stratified points were used to test the accuracy of the final map. Our results showed that 46,6% of the country is under pasture, 32,9% under forest and 8.5% under agriculture. The nonclassified areas were lumped into one category that accounted for 7,8% of the country. Global accuracy of the classification was 74% with the confusion between forest and pasture accounting for 19% of this error.

A servo-controlled automatic machine can perform tasks that involve synchronized actuation of a significant number of servo-axes, namely one degree-of-freedom (DoF) electromechanical actuators. Each servo-axis comprises a servo-motor, a mechanical transmission and an end-effector, and is responsible for generating the desired motion profile and providing the power required to achieve the overall task. The design of a such a machine must involve a detailed study from a mechatronic viewpoint, due to its electric and mechanical nature. The first objective of this thesis is the development of an overarching electromechanical model for a servo-axis. Every loss source is taken into account, be it mechanical or electrical. The mechanical transmission is modeled by means of a sequence of lumped-parameter blocks. The electric model of the motor and the inverter takes into account winding losses, iron losses and controller switching losses. No experimental characterizations are needed to implement the electric model, since the parameters are inferred from the data available in commercial catalogs. With the global model at disposal, a second objective of this work is to perform the optimization analysis, in particular, the selection of the motor-reducer unit. The optimal transmission ratios that minimize several objective functions are found. An optimization process is carried out and repeated for each candidate motor. Then, we present a novel method where the discrete set of available motor is extended to a continuous domain, by fitting manufacturer data. The problem becomes a two-dimensional nonlinear optimization subject to nonlinear constraints, and the solution gives the optimal choice for the motor-reducer system. The presented electromechanical model, along with the implementation of optimization algorithms, forms a complete and powerful simulation tool for servo-controlled automatic machines. The tool allows for determining a wide range of electric and mechanical parameters and the behavior of the system in different operating conditions.

In silico methods, such as musculoskeletal modelling, may aid the selection of the optimal surgical treatment for highly complex pathologies such as scoliosis. Many musculoskeletal models use a generic, simplified representation of the intervertebral joints, which are fundamental to the flexibility of the spine. Therefore, to model and simulate the spine, a suitable representation of the intervertebral joint is crucial. The aim of this PhD was to characterise specimen-specific models of the intervertebral joint for multi-body models from experimental datasets. First, the project investigated the characterisation of a specimen-specific lumped parameter model of the intervertebral joint from an experimental dataset of a four-vertebra lumbar spine segment. Specimen-specific stiffnesses were determined with an optimisation method. The sensitivity of the parameters to the joint pose was investigate. Results showed the stiffnesses and predicted motions were highly depended on both the joint pose. Following the first study, the method was reapplied to another dataset that included six complete lumbar spine segments under three different loading conditions. Specimen-specific uniform stiffnesses across joint levels and level-dependent stiffnesses were calculated by optimisation. Specimen-specific stiffness show high inter-specimen variability and were also specific to the loading condition. Level-dependent stiffnesses are necessary for accurate kinematic predictions and should be determined independently of one another. Secondly, a framework to create subject-specific musculoskeletal models of individuals with severe scoliosis was developed. This resulted in a robust codified pipeline for creating subject-specific, severely scoliotic spine models from CT data. In conclusion, this thesis showed that specimen-specific intervertebral joint stiffnesses were highly sensitive to joint pose definition and the importance of level-dependent optimisation. Further, an open-source codified pipeline to create patient-specific scoliotic spine models from CT data was released. These studies and this pipeline can facilitate the specimen-specific characterisation of the scoliotic intervertebral joint and its incorporation into scoliotic musculoskeletal spine models.
