Single phase perovskite 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1(PbTiO3) ceramics were prepared using the columbite precursor method after optimizing the synthesis conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were carried out to verify the phase formation at each processing step. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the microstructure of the sintered ceramics. Impedance and modulus spectroscopic data were used to gain an insight into the electrical properties of the samples and with a view to observing the relaxations in them. Nickel substituted lithium-cobalt oxides, LiCo1-xNixO2 (0 < x < 0.4), have been synthesized in a very short time by a solution combustion method at 350 degreesC using diformyl hydrazine as a fuel. Pure phases with hexagonal lattice structure have been obtained. These compounds facilitate reversible insertion/extraction of Li+ ions with good discharge capacity between 3.0 and 4.4 V versus Li/Li+. Results of the studies by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling and ac impedance measurements are presented. The combustion synthesis has been utilized to prepare nanophased powders of cobalt spinel ferrite using ODH and glycine fuels. The product was characterized by X‐ray diffraction; Fourier transformed spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV‐Vis absorption etc. The XRD patterns reveal spinal cubic structure. SEM profiles show the product is porous, agglomeration, irregular in shape. The crystallite size was estimated using Scherer’s formula and W‐H plots and show nano in size (13 nm: ODH & 36 nm: Glycine). The UV‐Vis absorption shows at ∼430 nm in both the samples.

A simple thermal evaporation method is presented for the growth of crystalline SnO2 nanowires at a low substrate temperature of 450 degrees C via an gold-assisted vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The as-grown nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and were also tested for methanol vapor sensing. Transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the single-crystalline nature of the each nanowire. The fabricated sensor shows good response to methanol vapor at an operating temperature of 450 degrees C. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present work, Co1-xMnxFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by the low-temperature auto-combustion method. The thermal decomposition process was investigated by means of differential and thermal gravimetric analysis (TG-DTA) that showed the precursor yield the final product above 450 degrees C. The phase purity and crystal lattice symmetry were estimated from X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructural features observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrates that the fine clustered particles were formed with an increase in average grain size with Mn2+ content. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the formation of spinel ferrite. Room temperature magnetization measurements showed that the magnetization M-s increases from 29 to 60 emu/g and H-c increases from 13 to 28 Oe with increase in Mn2+ content, which implies that these materials may be applicable for magnetic data storage and recording media. Pure cubic zirconia (ZrO2) nanopowder is prepared for the first time by simple low temperature solution combustion method without calcination. The product is characterized by Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The PXRD showed the formation of pure stable cubic ZrO2 nanopowders with average crystallite size ranging from 6 to 12 nm. The lattice parameters were calculated from Rietveld refinement method. SEM micrograph shows fluffy, mesoporous, agglomerated particles with large number of voids. TEM micrograph shows honey comb like arrangement of particles with particle size similar to 10 nm. The PL emission spectrum excited at 210 nm and 240 nm consists of intense bands centered at similar to 365 and similar to 390 nm. Both the samples show shoulder peak at 420 nm, along with four weak emission bands at similar to 484, similar to 528, similar to 614 and similar to 726 nm. TL studies were carried out pre-irradiating samples with gamma-rays ranging from 1 to 5 KGy at room temperature. A well resolved glow peak at 377 degrees C is recorded which can be ascribed to deep traps. With increase in gamma radiation there is linear increase in TL intensity which shows the possible use of ZrO2 as dosimetric material. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, we report the gas sensing behavior of BiNbO4 nanopowder prepared by a low temperature simple solution-based method. Before the sensing behaviour study, the as-synthesized nanopowder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, impedance analysis, and surface area measurement. The NH3 sensing behavior of BiNbO4 was then studied by temperature modulation (50-350 degrees C) as well as concentration modulation (20-140 ppm). At the optimum operating temperature of 325 degrees C, the sensitivity was measured to be 90%. The cross-sensitivity of as-synthesized BiNbO4 sensor was also investigated by assessing the sensing behavior toward other gases such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ethanol (C2H5OH), and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). Finally, selectivity of the sensing material toward NH3 was characterized by observing the sensor response with gas concentrations in the range 20-140 ppm. The response and recovery time for NH3 sensing at 120 ppm were about 16 s and about 17 s, respectively.

Well-aligned ZnO films have been successfully prepared by using low-temperature hydrothermal approach on (0001) sapphire substrates that were pre-coated with a ZnO nano-layer by dip-coating. The characterizations of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicate that the ZnO films consist of hexagonal rods that grow along the c axis based on the sapphire substrates. It is found that the size of ZnO rods can be adjusted by an aqueous solution with some methenamine. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The conversion of silver nanoparticle (NP) paste films into highly conductive films at low sintering temperature is an important requirement for the developing areas of additive fabrication and printed electronics. Ag NPs with a diameter of ∼10 nm were prepared via an improved chemical process to produce viscous paste with a high wt%. The paste consisted of as-prepared Ag NP and an organic vehicle of ethylcellulose that was deposited on glass and Si substrates using a contact lithographic technique. The morphology and conductivity of the imprinted paste film were measured as a function of sintering temperature, sintering time and the percentage ratio of Ag NP and ethylcellulose. The morphology and conductivity were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a two-point probe electrical conductivity measurement. The results show that the imprinted films were efficiently converted into conducting states when exposed to sintering temperature in the range of 200-240 °C, this temperature is lower than the previously reported values for Ag paste. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Low-temperature growth of cubic GaN at 520 degrees C was achieved using CCl4 as an additive by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) on GaAs substrate. X-Ray measurement confirmed that the films are single-phase cubic GaN. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) were also used to analyze the surface morphology and the quality of films. The evolution of surface morphology suggests that CCl4 can reduce the hopping barrier and thus Ga adatoms are able to diffuse easily on the GaN surface. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. A novel process of room temperature ion beam sputtering deposition of vanadium oxide films and low temperature post annealing for uncooled infrared detectors was proposed in this work. VOx thin films with relatively low square resistance (70 K Omega / square) and large temperature coefficient of resistance (more than 3%/K) at room temperature were fabricated using this low temperature process which was very compatible with the process of uncooled infrared detectors based on micromachined technology. Furthermore, chemical composition and film surface have been characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) respectively. The results showed that the main composition of the processed thin films was V2O5 and the thin films were in the process of crystallization.

ZnO thin films were grown on GaAs (001) substrates by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at low temperatures ranging from 100 to 400℃. DEZn and 1-12 O were used as the zinc precursor and oxygen precursor, respectively. The effects of the growth temperatures on the growth characteristics and optical properties of ZnO films were investigated. The X-ray diffraction measurement (XRD) results indicated that all the thin films were grown with highly c- axis orientation. The surface morphologies and crystal properties of the films were critically dependent on the growth temperatures. Although there was no evidence of epitaxial growth, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of ZnO film grown at 400℃ revealed the presence of ZnO microcrystallines with closed packed hexagon structure. The photoluminescence spectrum at room temperature showed only bright band-edge (3. 33eV) emissions with little or no deep-level e- mission related to defects.

We report, for the first time, extensive biologically-mediated phosphate removal from wastewater during high-rate anaerobic digestion (AD). A hybrid sludge bed/fixed-film (packed pumice stone) reactor was employed for low-temperature (12°C) anaerobic treatment of synthetic sewage wastewater. Successful phosphate removal from the wastewater (up to 78% of influent phosphate) was observed, mediated by biofilms in the reactor. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis revealed the accumulation of elemental phosphorus (~2%) within the sludge bed and fixed-film biofilms. 4’, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining indicated phosphorus accumulation was biological in nature and mediated through the formation of intracellular inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) granules within these biofilms. DAPI staining further indicated that polyP accumulation was rarely associated with free cells. Efficient and consistent chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was recorded, throughout the 732-day trial, at applied organic loading rates between 0.4-1.5 kg COD m-3 d-1 and hydraulic retention times of 8-24 hours, while phosphate removal efficiency ranged from 28-78% on average per phase. Analysis of protein hydrolysis kinetics and the methanogenic activity profiles of the biomass revealed the development, at 12˚C, of active hydrolytic and methanogenic populations. Temporal microbial changes were monitored using Illumina Miseq analysis of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences. The dominant bacterial phyla present in the biomass at the conclusion of the trial were the Proteobacteria and Firmicutes and the dominant archaeal genus was Methanosaeta. Trichococcus and Flavobacterium populations, previously associated with low temperature protein degradation, developed in the reactor biomass. The presence of previously characterised polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) such as Rhodocyclus, Chromatiales, Actinobacter and Acinetobacter was recorded at low numbers. However, it is unknown as yet if these were responsible for the luxury polyP uptake observed in this system. The possibility of efficient phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater during AD would represent a major advance in the scope for widespread application of anaerobic wastewater treatment technologies.

SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursors method and deposited by dip coating onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. The dip-coated films were specular and crack-free and crystallized during firing at 700 degrees C. Microstructure and morphological evaluation were followed by grazing incident X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films exhibited somewhat porous grain structure with rounded grains of about 100 nm. For the electrical measurements, gold electrodes of 300 mu m in diameter were sputter deposited on the top surface, forming a metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) configuration. The remanent polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were 5.6 mu C/cm(2) and 100 kV/cm, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis and high electrical properties. The multilayer PbTiO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 110-120 nm. A 380-nm-thick film was obtained by carrying out four cycles of the spin-coating/heating process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (=3.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 100 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 570 and 0.016. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 13.62 mu C/cm(2) and 121.43 kV/cm, respectively. The high electrical property values are attributed to the excellent microstrutural quality and chemical homogeneity of thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V.
