The memoir was written in New York between 1981 and 1983. Recollections of the Nazi take-over in Germany and their growing awareness of the upcoming danger. Closure of the cabaret of Friedrich Hollaender, where Lotte and her husband were working, due to its "subversive" political views. After the burning of the "Reichstag" (parliament) Lotte and Victor emigrated to France. Life of emigres in Paris. Lotte found work as a foreign language secretary. Victor worked with a film editor. Extradition from France due to their expired carte d'identite. Move to Amsterdam. In 1935 they went to friends in Spain, where Victor had a position as a film editor. They lived in Barcelona until outbreak of civil war. Escape to London via Prague. Exit visas for the United States. Arrival in New York in 1937. Victor was invited by Friedrich Hollaender to Hollywood, where Lotte joined him a few months later. Work as butler and cook in a family. Lotte found only a few engagements in theater and film. Divorce from her husband and remarriage with actor Wolfgang Zilzer (Paul Andor).

Public history, private memories: Historical imagination in the new Italian cinema 1988-1999

The concern with the following arguments started during a study of national and international cinemas, from the desire to account for a cinema that internationally was doing well, but was undervalued domestically. The aims were to account for the renewal of Italian filmmaking from 1988, the New Italian cinema, and understand the conditions behind this renewal. The thesis identifies in the historical theme and in the recurrence of features from Italian cinema history elements of coherence with previous cinema production. The first consideration that emerges is that a triangulation between a new generation of filmmakers, their audience and recent history shaped the recovery of Italian cinema from 1988. A second consideration is that no discussion of Italian cinema can be separated from a discussion of that which it represents: Italian society and politics. This representation has not only addressed questions of identity for a cohort of spectators, but on occasions has captured the attention of the international audience. Thus the thesis follows a methodologic approach that positions texts in relation to certain traditions in Italian filmmaking and to the context by taking into consideration also industrial factors and social and historical changes. By drawing upon a range of disciplines, from political history to socio-psychological studies, the thesis has focussed on representation of history and memory in two periods of Italian film history: the first and the last decade of twentieth century. The concern has been not so much to interpret the films, but to understand the processes that made the films and how spectarors have applied their knowledge structures to make meaning of the films. Thus the thesis abstains from ascribing implicit meanings to films, but acknowledges how films project cultural contingencies. This is beacause film is shaped by production conditions and cultural and historical circumstances that make the film intelligible. As Bordwell stated in Making Meaning, "One can do other things with films besides 'reading' them" (1989, p. xiii). Within this framework, the thesis proposes a project that understands history films with the norms that govern Italian filmic output, those norms that regulate conditions of production and consumption and the relation between films from various traditions.

The Comovement between Monetary and Fiscal Policy Instruments during the Post-War Period in the U.S.

This paper empirically studies the dynamic relationship between monetary and fiscal policies by analyzing the comovements between the Fed funds rate and the primary deficit/output ratio. Simple economic thinking establishes that a negative correlation between Fed rate and deficit arises whenever the two policy authorities share a common stabilization objective. However, when budget balancing concerns lead to a drastic deficit reduction the Fed may reduce the Fed rate in order to smooth the impact of fiscal policy, which results in a positive correlation between these two policy instruments. The empirical results show (i) a significant negative comovement between Fed rate and deficit and (ii) that deficit and output gap Granger-cause the Fed funds rate during the post-Volcker era, but the opposite is not true.

Markov Switching Risk Premium and the term structure of interest rates. Empirical evidence from US post-war interest rates

This paper considers the basic present value model of interest rates under rational expectations with two additional features. First, following McCallum (1994), the model assumes a policy reaction function where changes in the short-term interest rate are determined by the long-short spread. Second, the short-term interest rate and the risk premium processes are characterized by a Markov regime-switching model. Using US post-war interest rate data, this paper finds evidence that a two-regime switching model fits the data better than the basic model. The estimation results also show the presence of two alternative states displaying quite different features.

The changing behaviour of the term structure of post-war US

Using U.S. interest rate data covering the period 1950:1-1992:7, this paper tests the rational expectations model of the term structure of interest rates. We show evidence that the rational expectations model of the term structure is supported by the data during the seventies and a period lasting from the mid-eighties to the end of the sample. However, during the …fties, sixties and a period that covers most of the Volcker’s office term (from September 1979 to April 1986) the term structure model is rejected by the data. Moreover, wefind evidence of regime changes in the short-term rate process and the term structure of interest rates. These regime switches roughly coincide with changes in the Federal Reserve chairman. The switches in monetary policy taking place when the chairmanship of the Federal Reserve changes therefore seem to play an important role in characterizing the term structure of interest rates.

Westgrönland, der Kabeljaubestand und die hydrographische Situation im Herbst 1988

Über die positive Entwicklung des Kabeljaubestandes unter Westgrönland, ab Mitte der 80iger Jahre wurde bereits im Vorjahr berichtet. Die mit FFS "Walther Herwig" im Herbst 1987 erzielten Surveyergebnisse dokumentieren einen steilen Anstieg der Bestandsgröße sowohl hinsichtlich der Individuenzahl (Abundanz) als auch des Bestandsgewichts (Biomasse) um das 4-fache auf 583 Millionen Fische bzw. um das 6-fache auf 464000 Tonnen. Diese Bestandszunahme war zahlenmäßig zu 88% und gewichtsmäßig zu 85% auf die Rekrutierung der 3 jährigen Kabeljau des starken Nachwuchsjahrganges 1984 zurückzuführen.

Die stark rückläufige Tendenz des Dorschbestandes in der zentralen Ostsee, östlich von Bornholm, über die in den letzten Jahren berichtet wurde, hält nach den Untersuchungen des FFK "Solea" (31.1. - 10.2.1989)an. Im Bornholm Becken lag der durchschnittliche Grundschleppnetzfang je Stunde auf Wassertiefen flacher als 75 m, wo ausreichende Sauerstoffverhältnisse am Boden waren, im EG-Bereich mit 2,5 Korb nochmals niedriger als 1988 (3 Korb). Er lag damit fast um 2/3 niedriger als im langjährigen Mittel 1980-1986. Die besten Fänge wurden mit jeweils 3,5 Korb im Ostzipfel des EG-Meeres, im sogenannten "Bermuda Dreieck", und südlich von Nexö auf jeweils 72 m Wassertiefe erzielt. Im großen und ganzen war der Dorsch im Wassertiefenbereich zwischen 50 und 75 m des Bornholm Beckens recht gleichmäßig verteilt.

Die deutsche Fischerei auf Blauleng 1988 im Nordost-Atlantik

Die Blaulengfänge der deutschen Hochseefischerei fielen 1988 auf 318 t. Das ist der niedrigste Stand seit diese Fischart im Institut für Seefischerei bearbeitet wird. 1980 waren noch 13000 t gefangen worden, in den anschließenden Jahren ging der Ertrag kontinuierlich zurück, stieg lediglich 1987 geringfügig an und fiel 1988 dann auf die genannte Menge ab.

A constituição de 1988, as políticas públicas de saúde e o fornecimento de medicamentos para as pessoas portadoras de HIV/AIDS

A discussão sobre a atuação do Estado nas políticas públicas de Saúde remonta a constituição alemã de Weimar, em 1919 até os dias de hoje. No Brasil, esta discussão avança em dois momentos da década de 80: o primeiro é o registro dos casos de AIDS inicialmente detectados em 1980, enfermidade vista como problema de determinados grupos sociais de comportamentos desviantes e não da sociedade como um todo, acarretando movimento por parte da sociedade civil atingida pela doença, através de organizações não-governamentais que se especializaram na luta contra a discriminação do portador do vírus HIV e do doente de AIDS. O segundo momento é a promulgação da Constituição da República de 1988, texto normativo que estabeleceu diretrizes referentes ao fornecimento de serviços de saúde por parte do Estado, elevando a saúde a categoria de direito fundamental social. Estes movimentos liderados pelas organizações não-governamentais, pressionaram o Estado, através do Poder Judiciário para garantir o cumprimento de seus direitos de cidadãos previstos na Constituição, uma vez que o desrespeito aos direitos das pessoas que vivem com HIV/AIDS era crescente no Brasil. Para desenvolvimento da presente tese foi utilizada a pesquisa documental das decisões em todas as instâncias do Poder Judiciário, passando pelo Tribunal Estadual do Rio de Janeiro até chegar a cúpula do Poder Judiciário, o Supremo Tribunal Federal, aprofundando o estudo nas decisões que deferiram os pedidos referentes ao fornecimento de medicamentos para os doentes de AIDS. Foram utilizados documentos doutrinários para fundamentar a necessidade da aplicabilidade das normas constitucionais de forma imediata e não como meros programas para o poder público. Ao levantar estes documentos, observou-se que a previsão constitucional, e as decisões dos órgãos do Poder Judiciário, caminhavam não só para garantir os direitos das pessoas que vivem com HIV/AIDS, mas também para estender esta política pública a outras doenças degenerativas do organismo humano de forma a possibilitar a aplicação da previsão normativa não somente àquela doença.

The scientific legacy of the "Instituto Eduardo Torroja" in Bilbao (1960-1980)

By means of this analysis, we have endeavored to evaluate and understand both the influence that the IETcc started to bear on scientific progress in Bilbao, mainly during the 1960s and the 1970s, as well as the determined efforts of the local financial and industrial elite of the time to transform Bilbao into the great metropolis of the north, i.e. the economic capital of that part of Spain, using as a model, among other metropolises, New York, the financial capital of America, and Pittsburg, the industrial capital. The various means to accomplish this have been studied: from the institutions of investigation, exposition and information which would initiate the longed for scientific progress, to the pathways for reproducing the fascinating American way.

Azul celeste em vermelho: o projeto carnavalesco de Martinho e Ruça na Unidos de Vila Isabel entre 1988 e 1990

Na madrugada do dia 16 de fevereiro de 1988 a Unidos de Vila Isabel conquistou o título inédito do carnaval carioca com o enredo Kizomba Festa da Raça. Esse título foi o auge da administração de Lícia Maria Maciel Caniné, a Ruça que à época era casada com Martinho José Ferreira, o Martinho da Vila. O casal era filiado ao Partido Comunista Brasileiro, e a administração em questão se opunha politicamente a Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba, comandada pelo presidente anterior da Unidos de Vila Isabel, Aílton Guimarães Jorge, o Capitão Guimarães. Azul Celeste em Vermelho analisa a trama política carnavalesca tensionada de fins da década de 1980, focalizando na gestão da presidente Ruça empreendida entre os carnavais de 1988 e 1990. Iluminado por fontes orais e periódicos da época, o presente trabalho está interessado em discutir as memórias tramadas sobre aquela administração e seus usos políticos, por vezes partidários.

Analiza struktury przestrzennej i czasoprzestrzennej maksymalnych opadów dobowych w Polsce w latach 1956-1980

Jednym z wyników prognoz wykonywanych z zastosowaniem globalnych i regionalnych modeli klimatycznych jest odkrycie wysokiego prawdopodobieństwa wzrostu częstości oraz natężenia ekstremalnych opadów. Poznanie prawidłowości ich powtarzalności i zasięgu przestrzennego ma oczywiście bardzo duże znaczenie gospodarcze i społeczne. Dlatego, niezależnie od wprowadzania nowych technik pomiarowych należy dokonywać analizy i reinterpretacji archiwalnych danych, korzystając z możliwości stwarzanych przez rozwój GIS. Głównym celem opracowania jest analiza prawidłowości przestrzennej i czasowej zmienności miesięcznych oraz rocznych maksymalnych dobowych sum opadów (MSDO) z lat 1956-1980, z obszaru Polski. W pracy wykorzystano nowe w geografii polskiej metody geostatystyczne. Do publikacji dołączono dysk DVD ze źródłową bazą danych i najważniejszymi wynikami w postaci numerycznej i kartograficznej.
