The technology of self-reducing pellets for ferro-alloys production is becoming an emerging process due to the lower electric energy consumption and the improvement of metal recovery in comparison with the traditional process. This paper presents the effects of reduction temperature, addition of ferro-silicon and addition of slag forming agents for the production of high carbon ferro-chromium by utilization of self-reducing pellets. These pellets were composed of Brazilian chromium ore (chromite) concentrate, petroleum coke, Portland cement, ferro-silicon and slag forming components (silica and hydrated lime). The pellets were processed at 1 773 K, 1 823 K and 1 873 K using an induction furnace. The products obtained, containing slag and metallic phases, were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and chemical analyses (XEDS). A large effect on the reduction time was observed by increasing the temperature from 1 773 K to 1 823 K for pellets without Fe-Si addition: around 4 times faster at 1 823 K than at 1 773 K for reaction fraction close to one. However, when the temperature was further increased from 1 823 K to 1 873 K the kinetics improved by double. At 1 773 K, the addition of 2% of ferro-silicon in the pellet resulted in an increasing reaction rate of around 6 times, in comparison with agglomerate without it. The addition of fluxing agents (silica and lime), which form initial slag before the reduction is completed, impaired the full reduction. These pellets became less porous after the reduction process.

The distribution of Cr and N in a high-temperature gas-nitrided stainless steel was measured by using a scanning electron microscope-coupled wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectrometer and the results were related to the microhardness profile of the hardened case. The experimental spectrometric procedure was optimized to consistently measure N contents varying between 0.1 and 0.8 wt.% in martensite and between 18.3 and 21.6 wt.% in nitrides, as well as Cr contents ranging from 11.5 to 17.0 wt.%. Specimens of a UNS S31803 steel were submitted to high temperature gas nitriding and then to vibratory pitting wear tests. Nitrided samples displayed fully austenitic microstructures and 0.9 wt. % nitrogen contents. Prior to pitting tests, sample texture was characterized by electron backscattering diffraction, EBSD. Later on, the samples were tested in a vibratory pit testing equipment using distilled water Pitting tests were periodically interrupted to evaluate mass loss and to characterize the surface wear by SEM observations. At earlier pit erosion, stages intense and highly heterogeneous plastic deformation inside individual grains was observed. Later on, after the incubation period, mass loss by debris detachment was observed. Initial debris micro fracturing was addressed to low cycle fatigue. Damage started at both sites, inside the grains and grain boundaries. The twin boundaries were the most prone to mass-loss incubation. Grains with (101) planes oriented near parallel to the sample surface displayed higher wear resistance than grains with other textures. This was attributed to lower resolved stresses for plastic deformation inside the grains with (101)

The effects of temperature on the fast fracture behavior of aluminum nitride with 5 wt% Y(2)O(3) ceramic were investigated. Four-point flexural strength and fracture toughness were measured in air at several temperatures (30-1,300 A degrees C). The flexural strength gradually decreased with the increase of temperature up to 1,000 A degrees C due to the change in the fracture mode from transgranular to intergranular, and then became almost constant up to 1,300 A degrees C. Two main flaw types as fracture origin were identified: small surface flaw and large pores. The volume fraction of the large pores was only 0.01%; however, they limited the strength on about 50% of the specimens. The fracture toughness decreased slightly up to 800 A degrees C controlled by the elastic modulus change, and then decreased significantly at 1,000 A degrees C due to the decrease in the grain-boundary toughness. Above 1,000 A degrees C, the fracture toughness increased significantly, and at 1,300 A degrees C, its value was close to that measured at room temperature.

This paper discusses the effects of temperature, addition of ferro-silicon and fluxing agents for the production of high carbon ferro-chromium by self-reducing process. The use of self-reducing agglomerates for ferro-alloys production is becoming an emerging processing technology due to lowering the electric energy consumption and improving the metal recovery in comparison with traditional ones. The self-reducing pellets were composed by chromite, petroleum coke, cement and small (0.1% - 2%) addition of ferro-silicon. The slag composition was adjusted by addition of fluxing agents. The reduction of pellets was carried out at 1773K (1500 degrees C), 1823K (1550 degrees C) and 1873K (1600 degrees C) by using induction furnace. The products obtained, containing slag and metallic phases, were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and chemical analyses (XEDS). By increasing temperature from 1773K to 1823K large effect on the reduction time was observed. It decreased from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, for reaching around 0.98 reduction fraction. No significant effect on reduction time was observed when the reduction temperature was increased from 1823K to 1873K. At 1773K, the addition of 2% of ferro-silicon in the pellet resulted in an increasing reaction rate of around 6 times, in comparison with agglomerate without this addition. The addition of fluxing agents (silica and hydrated lime) has effect on reduction time (inverse relationship) and the pellets become less porous after reduction.

A high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel (0.9wt% N) and an ordinary 304 austenitic stainless steel were submitted to cavitation-erosion tests in a vibratory apparatus operating at a frequency of 20 kHz. The high nitrogen stainless steel was obtained by high temperature gas nitriding a 1-mm thick strip of an UNS 31803 duplex stainless steel. The 304 austenitic stainless steel was used for comparison purposes. The specimens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Electron Back Scatter Diffraction. The surface of the cavitation damaged specimens was analyzed trying to find out the regions where cavitation damage occurred preferentially. The distribution of sites where cavitation inception occurred was extremely heterogeneous, concentrating basically at (i) slip lines inside some grains and (ii) Sigma-3 coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries (twin boundaries). Furthermore, it was observed that the CE damage spread faster inside those grains which were more susceptible to damage incubation. The damage heterogeneity was addressed to plasticity anisotropy. Grains in which the crystallographic orientation leads to high resolved shear stress show intense damage at slip lines. Grain boundaries between grains with large differences in resolved shear stress where also intensely damaged. The relationship between crystallite orientation distributions, plasticity anisotropy and CE damage mechanisms are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

For specific blanket and divertor applications in future fusion power reactors a replacement of presently considered reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steels as a structural material by suitable oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic martensitic steels would allow a substantial increase of the operating temperature from similar to 823 to about 923 K. Due to this reason the RAFM-alloy ODS-Eurofer has already been developed and produced with industrial partners. In the He-cooled modular divertor concept, where temperatures above 923 K will arise, an ODS-steel with a purely ferritic matrix is advantageous, because of missing phase transitions. Due to this reason, a special ferritic ODS-steel is being manufactured as well. In this work the microstructures of these two ODS-alloy types, analysed mainly by high resolution TEM are compared, with respect to different manufacturing processes. In addition first results of high resolution EBSD scans together with determined orientation maps of the RAFM steel ODS-Eurofer will also be presented. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study examines the applicability of a micromechanics approach based upon the computational cell methodology incorporating the Gurson-Tvergaard (GT) model and the CTOA criterion to describe ductile crack extension of longitudinal crack-like defects in high pressure pipeline steels. A central focus is to gain additional insight into the effectiveness and limitations of both approaches to describe crack growth response and to predict the burst pressure for the tested cracked pipes. A verification study conducted on burst testing of large-diameter, precracked pipe specimens with varying crack depth to thickness ratio (a/t) shows the potential predictive capability of the cell approach even though both the CT model and the CTOA criterion appear to depend on defect geometry. Overall, the results presented here lend additional support for further developments in the cell methodology as a valid engineering tool for integrity assessments of pipelines with axial defects. In this work, we have studied the influence of the substrate surface condition on the roughness and the structure of the nanostructured DLC films deposited by High Density Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition. Four methods were used to modify the silicon wafers surface before starting the deposition processes of the nanostructured DLC films: micro-diamond powder dispersion, micro-graphite powder dispersion, and roughness generation by wet chemical etching and roughness generation by plasma etching. The reference wafer was only submitted to a chemical cleaning. It was possible to see that the final roughness and the sp(3) hybridization degree strongly depend on the substrate surface conditions. The surface roughness was observed by AFM and SEM and the hybridization degree of the DLC films was analyzed by Raman Spectroscopy. In these samples, the final roughness and the sp(3) hybridization quantity depend strongly on the substrate surface condition. Thus, the effects of the substrate surface on the DLC film structure were confirmed. These phenomena can be explained by the fact that the locally higher surface energy and the sharp edges may induce local defects promoting the nanostructured characteristics in the DLC films. The present work reports the thermal annealing process, the number of layer and electrochemical process effect in the optical response quality of Bragg and microcavity devices that were applied as organic solvent sensors. These devices have been obtained by using porous silicon (PS) technology. The optical characterization of the Bragg reflector, before annealing, showed a broad photonic band-gap structure with blue shifted and narrowed after annealing process. The electrochemical process used to obtain the PS-based device imposes the limit in the number of layers because of the chemical dissolution effect. The interface roughness minimizations in the devices have been achieved by using the double electrochemical cell setup. The microcavity devices showed to have a good sensibility for organic solvent detection. The thermal annealed device showed better sensibility feature and this result was attributed to passivation of the surface devices. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tendon reflexes have been often used in studies of the human nervous system in health and disease. They have been investigated either in response to single tendon taps or to long duration vibrations. Tendon reflexes are described here in response to a high frequency vibration burst (3 cycles of a 100 Hz sine wave) applied to the Achilles tendon of standing subjects, either in quiet stance or during a forward leaning posture. The electromyogram from the soleus muscle usually showed three components separated by 10 ms which were interpreted as being three reflexes, each reflex induced by each of the three cycles in a burst. This result indicates that soleus tendon reflexes can respond in fast succession in a phasic manner when a brief high frequency vibration is applied to the Achilles tendon. This occurs in spite of possible depression of the la to motoneuron synapses and the long after hyperpolarization of the motoneurons. An interpretation of the results is that motoneurons from different subsets of the motoneuron pool respond to different cycles of the sinusoidal vibratory burst. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensory stability of ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk subjected to different heat treatments and stored at room temperature in white high density polyethylene bottles (HDPE) pigmented with titanium dioxide. Two lots of 300 units each were processed, respectively, at 135 and 141 degrees C/10 s using indirect heating and subsequently aseptically filled in an ISO class 7 clean room. These experimental lots were evaluated for appearance, aroma, flavor, and overall appreciation and compared to samples of commercial UHT milk purchased from local commercial stores. The time-temperature combinations investigated did not affect either the acceptability or the shelf life of the milk. Despite the limited light barrier properties of HDPE bottles, the product contained in the package tested exhibited good stability, with a shelf life ranging from 4 to 11 wk. Within this time period, the acceptability of the experimental lots was similar to that of the commercial products. The results achieved in this study contribute to turn the low-cost UHT system investigated into a technically viable option for small-size dairy processing plants.

The fatigue behavior of the SAE 1045 steel in four different conditions is reported in this paper. Four treatments were tested: polished surface, corrosive atmosphere (sugar cane juice), low quality roughness (typical equivalent surface of the shaft cane mill) and the combined condition of the two last treatments involved. Fatigue tests were performed in rotating bending conditions and the values of fatigue strength for the different situations from tests were obtained. The diminution in fatigue strength for the synergy condition of rough surface and corrosive atmosphere was of 8.7%, result statistically representative with less than 0.01% of uncertainty.

Tomato high pigment (hp) mutants represent an interesting horticultural resource due to their enhanced accumulation of carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamin C. Since hp mutants are known for their exaggerated light responses, the molecules accumulated are likely to be antioxidants, recruited to deal with light and others stresses. Further phenotypes displayed by hp mutations are reduced growth and an apparent disturbance in water loss. Here, we examined the impact of the hp1 mutation and its near isogenic line cv Micro-Tom (MT) on stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), CO(2) assimilation (A) and water use efficiency (WUE). Detached hp1 leaves lost water more rapidly than control leaves, but this behaviour was reversed by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA), indicating the ability of hp1 to respond to this hormone. Although attached hp1 leaves had enhanced gs, E and A compared to control leaves, genotypic differences were lost when water was withheld. Both instantaneous leaf-level WUE and long-term whole plant WUE did not differ between hp1 and MT. Our results indicate a link between exaggerated light response and water loss in hp1, which has important implications for the use of this mutant in both basic and horticultural research.

The complex interactions among endangered ecosystems, landowners` interests, and different models of land tenure and use, constitute an important series of challenges for those seeking to maintain and restore biodiversity and augment the flow of ecosystem services. Over the past 10 years, we have developed a data-based approach to address these challenges and to achieve medium and large-scale ecological restoration of riparian areas on private lands in the state of Sao Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Given varying motivations for ecological restoration, the location of riparian areas within landholdings, environmental zoning of different riparian areas, and best-practice restoration methods were developed for each situation. A total of 32 ongoing projects, covering 527,982 ha, were evaluated in large sugarcane farms and small mixed farms, and six different restoration techniques have been developed to help upscale the effort. Small mixed farms had higher portions of land requiring protection as riparian areas (13.3%), and lower forest cover of riparian areas (18.3%), than large sugarcane farms (10.0% and 36.9%, respectively for riparian areas and forest cover values). In both types of farms, forest fragments required some degree of restoration. Historical anthropogenic degradation has compromised forest ecosystem structure and functioning, despite their high-diversity of native tree and shrub species. Notably, land use patterns in riparian areas differed markedly. Large sugarcane farms had higher portions of riparian areas occupied by highly mechanized agriculture, abandoned fields, and anthropogenic wet fields created by siltation in water courses. In contrast, in small mixed crop farms, low or non-mechanized agriculture and pasturelands were predominant. Despite these differences, plantations of native tree species covering the entire area was by far the main restoration method needed both by large sugarcane farms (76.0%) and small mixed farms (92.4%), in view of the low resilience of target sites, reduced forest cover, and high fragmentation, all of which limit the potential for autogenic restoration. We propose that plantations should be carried out with a high-diversity of native species in order to create biologically viable restored forests, and to assist long-term biodiversity persistence at the landscape scale. Finally, we propose strategies to integrate the political, socio-economic and methodological aspects needed to upscale restoration efforts in tropical forest regions throughout Latin America and elsewhere.
