Flexible luminescent polymer films were obtained by doping europium(III) complexes in blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and the ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(6)mim][Tf2N]. Different europium(III) complexes have been incorporated in the polymer/ionic liquid matrix: [C(6)mim][Eu(nta)(4)], [C(6)mim][Eu(tta)(4)], [Eu(tta)(3)(phen)] and [choline](3)[Eu(dpa)(3)], where nta is 2-naphthoyltrifluoroacetonate, tta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, phen is 1,10-phenanthroline, dpa is 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate ( dipicolinate) and choline is the 2-hydroxyethyltrimethyl ammonium cation. Bright red photoluminescence was observed for all the films upon irradiation with ultraviolet radiation. The luminescent films have been investigated by high-resolution steady-state luminescence spectroscopy and by time-resolved measurements. The polymer films doped with beta-diketonate complexes are characterized by a very intense D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition ( up to 15 times more intense than the D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) transition, whereas a marked feature of the PMMA films doped with [choline](3)[Eu(dpa)(3)] is the long lifetime of the D-5(0) excited state (1.8 ms).

Narrow bandwidth red electroluminescence from OLED devices fabricated using a simple solution-based approach is demonstrated. A spin-casting method is employed to fabricate organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices comprising a poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrix doped with a europium beta-diketonate complex, Eu(dbM)(3)(Phen) (dibenzoylmethanate, dbm; 1,10-phenanthroline, Phen) on glass/ indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Saturated red europium ion emission, based on the (5)Do ->F-7(2) transition, is centered at a wavelength of 612 nm with a full width at half maximum of 3.5 rim. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.3 x 10(-2) cd/A (3.1 X 10(-2)%) and a maximum luminance of 130 cd/M-2 at 400 mA/cm(2) and 25 V is measured for ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Eu(dbM)3(Phen)/Ca/Al devices. This measured output luminance is comparable to that of devices fabricated using more sophisticated small molecule evaporation techniques. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Acidification of an isopropanol solution containing mixtures of [Ti(OPri)(4)] and [W(OEt)(5)] produced solutions from which various TiO2, WO3 and TiO2/WO3 thin films could be obtained by dip coating and annealing. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, SEM/EDAX, Raman, electronic spectra, contact angle and photoactivity with respect to destruction of an over layer of stearic acid. The TiO2/WO3 films were shown to be mixtures of two phases TiO2 and WO3 rather than a solid solution TixWyO2. The 2% tungsten oxide doped titania films were shown to be the most effective photocatalysts. All of the TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 films showed light induced superhydrophillicity. Undoped and cobalt-doped (1-4 wt.%) ZnO polycrystalline, thin films have been fabricated on quartz substrates using sequential spin-casting and annealing of simple salt solutions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals a wurzite ZnO crystalline structure with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showing lattice planes of separation 0.26 nm, characteristic of (002) planes. The Co appears to be tetrahedrally co-ordinated in the lattice on the Zn sites (XRD) and has a charge of + 2 in a high-spin electronic state (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). Co-doping does not alter the wurzite structure and there is no evidence of the precipitation of cobalt oxide phases within the limits of detection of Raman and XRD analysis. Lattice defects and chemisorbed oxygen are probed using photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy - crucially, however, this transparent semiconductor material retains a bandgap in the ultraviolet (3.30-3.48 eV) and high transparency (throughout the visible spectral regime) across the doping range. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The position-dependent oxygen vacancy dynamics induced by a biased scanning probe microscopy tip in Samarium doped ceria thin films grown on MgO (100) substrates is investigated. The granularity of the samples gives rise to spatially dependent local electrochemical activity, as explored by electrochemical strain microscopy. The kinetics of the oxygen vacancy relaxation process is investigated separately for grain boundaries and grains. Higher oxygen vacancy concentration variation and slower diffusion are observed in the grain boundary regions as compared to the grains.

The reflectance of thin films of magnesium doped SrRu03(Mg-SR0) produced by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiOa (100) substrates has been measured at room temperature between 100 and 7500 cm~^. The films were chosen to have wide range of thickness, stoichiometry and electrical properties. As the films were very thin (less than 300 nm), and some were insulating the reflectance data shows structures due to both the film and the substrate. Hence, the data was analyzed using Kramers-Kronig constrained variational fitting (VDF) method to extract the real optical conductivity of the Mg-SRO films. Although the VDF technique is flexible enough to fit all features of the reflectance spectra, it seems that VDF could not eliminate the substrate's contribution from fllm conductivity results. Also the comparison of the two different programs implementing VDF fltting shows that this technique has a uniqueness problem. The optical properties are discussed in light of the measured structural and transport properties of the fllms which vary with preparation conditions and can be correlated with differences in stoichiometry. This investigation was aimed at checking the VDF technique and also getting answer to the question whether Mg^"*" substitutes in to Ru or Sr site. Analysis of our data suggests that Mg^+ goes to Ru site.

Copper doped methylene blue sensitized poly(vinyl alcohol) (MBPVA)–acrylamide films were fabricated to improve the storage life of recorded gratings. The films were fabricated using gravity settling method and the copper chloride concentration was optimized as 3:18 10 3 mol/l for a dye concentration of 6:2 10 4 mol/l. The gratings recorded on the optimized film constitution could be stored for months with stable diffraction efficiency (24%) without any chemical or thermal fixing techniques. The resolution of the material is found to be unaffected with the addition of copper chloride.

The photosensitivity of dye mixture-doped polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) films are investigated as a function of laser power, concentration of the dyes, modulation frequency and the irradiation wavelength. Energy transfer from a donor molecule to an acceptor molecule affects the emission output of the dye mixture system. Photosensitivity is found to change with changes in donor–acceptor concentrations. PMMA samples doped with the dye mixture are found to be more photosensitive when the dyes are mixed in the same proportion.

The objective of the present study is the formation of single phase Zn1−xTMxO thin films by PLD and increase the solubility limit of TM dopants. The TM doped ZnO nanostructures were also grown by hydrothermal method. The structural and morphological variation of ZnO:TM thin films and nanostructures with TM doping concentration is also investigated. The origin and enhancement of ferromagnetism in single phase Zn1−xTMxO thin films and nanostructures using spectroscopic techniques were also studied. Photoinduced poling (PIP) is a new technique which allows the room‐temperature preparation of guest/host polymer films exhibiting significant polar order for nonlinear optical applications. We report a comparison of this novel technique with the conventional electrode poling procedure performed at the glass transition temperature of the polymer using disperse red 1/poly(methylmethacrylate) films. In particular, in situ second harmonic generation measurements show that levels of polar order achieved using these two techniques are similar. In contrast, the stability of the polar order is reduced by up to 20 times in terms of the decay time constant in films prepared using PIP although the stability is very dependent upon the temperature at which the poling was performed.
