An ammonia loop heat pipe (LHP) with a flat plate evaporator is developed and tested. The device uses a nickel wick encased in an aluminum-stainless steel casing. The loop is tested for various heat loads and different sink temperatures, and it demonstrated reliable startup characteristics. Results with the analysis of the experimental observation indicate that the conductance between the compensation chamber and the heater plate can significantly influence the operating temperatures of the LHP. A mathematical model is also presented which is validated against the experimental observations.

Paramagnetic, or open-shell, systems are often encountered in the context of metalloproteins, and they are also an essential part of molecular magnets. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for chemical structure elucidation, but for paramagnetic molecules it is substantially more complicated than in the diamagnetic case. Before the present work, the theory of NMR of paramagnetic molecules was limited to spin-1/2 systems and it did not include relativistic corrections to the hyperfine effects. It also was not systematically expandable. --- The theory was first expanded by including hyperfine contributions up to the fourth power in the fine structure constant α. It was then reformulated and its scope widened to allow any spin state in any spatial symmetry. This involved including zero-field splitting effects. In both stages the theory was implemented into a separate analysis program. The different levels of theory were tested by demonstrative density functional calculations on molecules selected to showcase the relative strength of new NMR shielding terms. The theory was also tested in a joint experimental and computational effort to confirm assignment of 11 B signals. The new terms were found to be significant and comparable with the terms in the earlier levels of theory. The leading-order magnetic-field dependence of shielding in paramagnetic systems was formulated. The theory is now systematically expandable, allowing for higher-order field dependence and relativistic contributions. The prevailing experimental view of pseudocontact shift was found to be significantly incomplete, as it only includes specific geometric dependence, which is not present in most of the new terms introduced here. The computational uncertainty in density functional calculations of the Fermi contact hyperfine constant and zero-field splitting tensor sets a limit for quantitative prediction of paramagnetic shielding for now.

Proton and12C NMR study of molecules related to retinal has been carried out. The characteristic differences in spectral behaviour among 7-trans and 7-cis isomers have been established which would be useful in determining the structure of new isomers and identifying components in a mixture. Through coupling constant measurements and DNMR study it is clearly established that 7-cis isomers of β-ionyl derivatives and in turn 7-cis isomers of retinyl derivatives prefer a non-planar arrangement and this non-planarity brings about resonance destabilisation.

Novel one and two dimensional NMR techniques are proposed and utilized for the determination of the signs of the order parameters used for the study of the mobility of the fatty acid chains. The experiments designed to extract this information involve the use of the intensities of the side bands in the spectra of oriented systems spinning at the magic angle. Advantages of the two dimensional technique over the one dimensional method are discussed. The utility of the method in the study of the dynamic properties of membranes and model systems is pointed out.

This paper presents an optimization algorithm for an ammonia reactor based on a regression model relating the yield to several parameters, control inputs and disturbances. This model is derived from the data generated by hybrid simulation of the steady-state equations describing the reactor behaviour. The simplicity of the optimization program along with its ability to take into account constraints on flow variables make it best suited in supervisory control applications.

Dehydrogenation of ammonia borane was carried out in fluor alcohol solvent in order to obtain compounds that are more likely candidates suitable for regeneration. Even though ammonia borane undergoes self-dissociation in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol to liberate H-2, decent hydrogen release rates were obtained by using Co-Co2B, Ni-Ni3B, and Co-Ni-B nanocomposites as catalysts. These catalysts are magnetic in nature and hence can be separated from the reaction mixture using a magnet for re-use. The final by-product NH4+ B(OCH2CF3)(4)(-) obtained after the catalytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane was thoroughly characterized using H-1, B-11, and C-13 NMR and IR spectroscopies. The FTIR data showed that the B-O bond in NH4+ B(OCH2CF3)(4)(-) is slightly weaker compared to boric acid. Preliminary investigations on the regenerative routes for ammonia borane from the by-product NH4+ B(OCH2CF3)(4)(-) showed indications of the formation of BNHx species. (C) 2010 Professor T. A fully automated, versatile Temperature Programmed Desorption (TDP), Temperature Programmed Reaction (TPR) and Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) system has been designed and fabricated. The system consists of a micro-reactor which can be evacuated to 10−6 torr and can be heated from 30 to 750°C at a rate of 5 to 30°C per minute. The gas evolved from the reactor is analysed by a quadrupole mass spectrometer (1–300 amu). Data on each of the mass scans and the temperature at a given time are acquired by a PC/AT system to generate thermograms. The functioning of the system is exemplified by the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of oxygen from YBa2Cu3−xCoxO7 ± δ, catalytic ammonia oxidation to NO over YBa2Cu3O7−δ and anaerobic oxidation of methanol to CO2, CO and H2O over YBa2Cu3O7−δ (Y123) and PrBa2Cu3O7−δ (Pr123) systems.

The use of the intensities of the spinning sidebands in the magic-angle spinning spectra of oriented molecules is proposed for the determination of the signs of the order parameters. The method is demonstrated for benzene and chloroform oriented in nematic phases of liquid crystals. On the basis of the theoretical expressions derived for the various order sidebands, the applicability of the method for different experimental conditions is discussed.
