In this paper, five Pt3Sn1/C catalysts have been prepared using three different methods. It was found that phosphorus deposited on the surface of carbon with Pt and Sn when sodium hypophosphite was used as reducing agent by optimization of synthetic conditions such as pH in the synthetic solution and temperature. The deposition of phosphorus should be effective on the size reduction and markedly reduces PtSn nanoparticle size, and raise electrochemical active surface (EAS) area of catalyst and improve the catalytic performance. TEM images show PtSnP nanoparticles are highly dispersed on the carbon surface with average diameters of 2 nm. The optimum composition is Pt3Sn1P2/C (note PtSn/C-3) catalyst in my work. With this composition, it shows very high activity for the electrooxidation of ethanol and exhibit enhanced performance compared with other two Pt3Sn1/C catalysts that prepared using ethylene glycol reduction method (note PtSn/C-EG) and borohydride reduction method (note PtSn/-B). The maximum power densities of direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) were 61 mW cm(-2) that is 150 and 170% higher than that of the PtSn/C-EG and PtSn/C-B catalyst.

A series of aluminum ethyls and isopropoxides based upon N,N,O,O-tetradentate Schiff base ligand framework have been prepared. X-ray diffraction analysis and H-1 NMR confirmed that these Schiff base aluminum ethyls and isopropoxides were all monomeric species with a five-coordinated central aluminum in their solid structures. Compared to the aluminum ethyls which all retain their monomeric structure in the solution, the dinucleating phenomenons of aluminum isopropoxides with less steric hindered substituents in the solution have also been observed. The activities and stereoselectivities of these complexes toward the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide have been investigated. Polymerization experiments indicated that (SB-2d)(AlOPr)-Pr-i [(SB-2d) = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylideneiminato)] exhibited the highest stereoselectivity and (SB-3b)(AlOPr)-Pr-i [(SB-3b) = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenebis(3,5-dichlorinesalicylideneiminato)] possessed the highest activity among these aluminum isopropoxides. The substituents and the mode of the bridging part between the two nitrogen atoms both exerted significant influences upon the progress of the polymerizations, influencing either the tacticity of isolated polymers or the rate of polymerization.

Bronsted acid-base ionic liquids (GILs) based on guanidine and acetic acid are efficient reaction media for palladium-catalyzed Heck reactions. They offer the advantages of high activity and reusability. GIL2 plays multiple roles in the reaction: it could act as solvent, as a strong base to facilitate beta-hydride elimination, and as a ligand to stabilize activated Pd species.

In this paper, it is reported for the first time that a carbon-supported Pd-P (Pd-P/C) catalyst for the anodic catalyst in the direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) can be prepared. The Pd-P/C catalyst shows that its electrocatalytic activity and especially its stability for the oxidation of formic acid are much higher than that of a Pd/C catalyst. Therefore, the Pd-P/C catalyst may have practical applications in DFAFCs.

A series of strong solid acids composed of WO3/ZrO2 were prepared. Their crystal structure, surface state, and acidity were determined by the methods of X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed reduction, laser Raman, and acidity measurement. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in the tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role in stabilizing the tetragonal phase of ZrO2, and all of the samples possessed large surface areas. WO3 in WO3/ZrO2 is mainly monolayer dispersed, and a small amount crystallized on the ZrO2 surface and partly reacted with ZrO2 to form the bond of Zr-O-W, acting as the strong solid acid center. The catalytic properties of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid;acids for alkylation of isobutane with butene at different conditions were investigated. They had a better reaction performance than other strong solid acids; a parallel relationship could be drawn between the catalytic activity and the acid amounts as well as the acidic strength of the catalysts.

A series of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid acid prepared under different conditions were studied. Their crystal structures, surface properties and acidities were determined by means of XRD, DTA-TG, H-2- TPR, Laser Raman and acidity measurements. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role to stabilize tetragonal phase of ZrO2 and thus the catalyst had a considerable surface area. WO3 in WO3/ZrO2 was dispersed and crystalized in WO3 crystalite on ZrO2 surface and partly reacted with ZrO2 to form the bond of Zr-O-W, which acts as the strong solid acid site. The catalytic properties of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid acid for alkylation of iso-butane with butene under the different conditions were investigated. They had a better reaction performance than other strong solid acids, a parallel relationship could be drawn between the catalytic activity and the amount of acid sites as well as the acidic strength of the catalysts.

Heteropoly acids (HPAs), such as dodecatungstosilicic acid (SiW12), adsorb strongly on to activated carbons. The surface chemical properties of the activated carbons have a pronounced effect on the adsorption of HPAs. To obtain activated carbons with the desired surface chemical properties, modification with mineral acids has been applied. The adsorption isotherms of SiW12 from aqueous solution and various acidic media on to the various carbons have been studied. On the basis of the results obtained, an adsorption model for HPAs from acidic media is presented.

Supported catalysts, consisting of SiW12 immobilized on hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) and its aluminum-substituted derivative (MCM-41) with different loadings and calcination temperatures, have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. It is shown that SiW12 retains the Keggin structure on the mesoporous molecular sieves and no HPA crystal phase is developed, even at SiW12 loadings as high as 50 wt%. In the esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol, supported catalysts exhibit a higher catalytic activity and stability and held some promise of practical application. In addition, experimental results indicate that the loaded amount of SiW12 and the calcination temperatures have a significant influence on the catalytic activity, and the existence of aluminum has also an effect on the properties of supported catalysts.

Titania sols were prepared by acid hydrolysis of a TiCl4 precursor instead of titanium alkoxides. The effect of acid concentration on the particle size and stability of sol was investigated. Stable titania sols with mean particle size of 14 nm could be obtained when the H+/Ti molar ratio was 0.5. The titania sols were modified with Pt, SiO2, ZrO2, WO3 and MoO3 to prepare a series of modified catalysts, which were used for the photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at 37 degreesC. They showed different photocatalytic activities due to the influence of the additives. Comparing with pure TiO2, the addition of silica or zirconia increased the photocatalytic activity, while the addition of Pt and MoO3 decreased the activity, and the addition Of WO3 had little effect on the activity. It is of great significance that the conversion of formaldehyde was increased up to 94% over the SiO2-TiO2 catalyst. The increased activity was partly due to higher surface area and porosity or smaller crystallite size. A comparison of our catalyst compositions with the literature in this field suggested that the difference in activity due to the addition of a second metal oxide maybe caused by the surface chemistry of the catalysts, particularly the acidity. A novel sol-gel process for preparing oxides and mixed oxides sols from precipitation and peptization process is reported in this article. Inorganic salts are used as raw materials in this study. It is found that the amount of acid has great influence on the stability and particle diameter distribution of the precursor sols. Ultrasonic treatment is used to prepare alumina sol at room temperature. The result of Al-27 NMR shows that there exist Al-13(7+) species in the sol. By controlling the sol particles with narrow particle diameter distribution, alumina, titania and silica-alumina (SA) materials with narrow mesoporous distribution are formed by regular packing of sol particles during gelation without using any templates. The results also show that the structure and particle diameter distribution of precursor sol determine the final materials' texture.

In order to investigate the effect of acid properties on the coke behavior and stability of butene aromatization, we prepared the AHZSM-5 samples with various acid properties by the methods of hydrothernial treatment and K addition. The reaction of butene aromatization was carried out at 350 degrees C and 0.5 MPa in a continuous flow fixed bed. The characterization of the fresh/coked catalysts with NH3-TPD, N-2 adsorption-desorption measurement, and TG techniques has shown that a large amount of acid sites (high acid density) of the AHZMS-5 catalyst can cause a large quantity of coke deposit and serious channel blockage, and so result in a rapid loss of aromatization activity. On the contrary, after a great reduction in strong acid sites of AHZSM-5 catalyst resulting from some K-modification, the presence of only many weak acid sites also could not lessen the formation of coke nor improve the reaction stability of butene aromatization. Interestingly, the simultaneous reduction in the strong and weak acid sites to a desirable level by hydrothermal treating the AHZSM-5 catalyst at a proper temperature can effectively suppress the coke formation and channel blockage, and thus improve its olefin aromatization stability. We conducted the liquid phase oxidation of toluene with molecular oxygen over heterogeneous catalysts of copper-based binary metal oxides. Among the copper-based binary metal oxides, iron-copper binary oxide (Fe/Cu = 0.3 atomic ratio) was found to be the best catalyst. In the presence of pyridine, overoxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid was partially prevented. As a result, highly selective formation of benzaldehyde (86% selectivity) was observed after 2 h of reaction (7% conversion of toluene) at 463 K and 1.0 MPa of oxygen atmosphere in the presence of pyridine. These catalytic performances were similar or better than those in the gas phase oxidation of toluene at reaction temperatures higher than 473 K and under 0.5-2.5 MPa. It was suggested from competitive adsorption measurements that pyridine could reduce the adsorption of benzaldehyde. At a long reaction time of 4 It, the conversion increased to 25% and benzoic acid became the predominant reaction product (72% selectivity) in the absence of pyridine. The yield of benzoic acid was higher than that in the Snia-Viscosa process, which requires corrosive halogen ions and acidic solvents in the homogeneous reaction media. The catalyst was easily recycled by simple filtration and reusable after washing and drying.
