Shock wave reflection over a rotating circular cylinder is numerically and experimentally investigated. It is shown that the transition from the regular reflection to the Mach reflection is promoted on the cylinder surface which rotates in the same direction of the incident shock motion, whereas it is retarded on the surface that rotates to the reverse direction. Numerical calculations solving the Navier-Stokes equations using extremely fine grids also reveal that the reflected shock transition from RRdouble right arrowMR is either advanced or retarded depending on whether or not the surface motion favors the incident shock wave. The interpretation of viscous effects on the reflected shock transition is given by the dimensional analysis and from the viewpoint of signal propagation.

A low-power frequency multiplication technique, developed for ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) like applications is presented. We have provided an estimate for the power consumption for a given output voltage swing using our technique. The advantages and disadvantages which determine the application areas of the technique are discussed. The issues related to design, layout and process variation are also addressed. Finally, a design is presented for operation in 2.405-2.485-GHz band of ZigBee receiver. SpectreRF simulations show 30% improvement in efficiency for our circuit with regard to conversion of DC bias current to output amplitude, against a LC-VCO. To establish the low-power credentials, we have compared our circuit with an existing technique; our circuit performs better with just 1/3 of total current from supply, and uses one inductor as against three in the latter case. A test chip was implemented in UMC 0.13-mum RF process with spiral on-chip inductors and MIM (metal-insulator-metal) capacitor option.

Nanocrystalline ZnO powders have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of as-formed and heat treated ZnO shows strong violet (402, 421, 437, 485 nm) and weak green (520 nm) emission peaks respectively. The PL intensities of defect related emission bands decrease with calcinations temperature indicating the decrease of Zn(i) and V(o)(+) caused by the chemisorptions of oxygen. The results are correlated with the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of gamma irradiated ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a single broad glow peak at similar to 343 degrees C. This can be attributed to the recombination of charge carriers released from the surface states associated with oxygen defects, mainly interstitial oxygen ion centers. The trapping parameters of ZnO irradiated with various gamma-doses are calculated using peak shape method. It is observed that the glow peak intensity increases with increase of gamma dose without changing glow curve shape. These two characteristic properties such as TL intensity increases with gamma dose and simple glow curve structure is an indication that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles might be used as good TL dosimeter for high temperature application. The use of Wiener–Lee transforms to construct one of the frequency characteristics, magnitude or phase of a network function, when the other characteristic is given graphically, is indicated. This application is useful in finding a realisable network function whose magnitude or phase curve is given. A discrete version of the transform is presented, so that a digital computer can be employed for the computation.

Abstract | The importance of well-defined inorganic porous nanostructured materials in the context of biotechnological applications such as drug delivery and biomolecular sensing is reviewed here in detail. Under optimized conditions, the confinement of “bio”-relevant molecules such as pharmaceutical drugs, enzymes or proteins inside such inorganic nanostructures may be remarkably beneficial leading to enhanced molecular stability, activity and performance. From the point of view of basic research, molecular confinement inside nanostructures poses several formidable and intriguing problems of statistical mechanics at the mesoscopic scale. The theoretical comprehension of such non-trivial issues will not only aid in the interpretation of observed phenomena but also help in designing better inorganic nanostructured materials for biotechnological applications.

All major rivers in Bhutan depend on snowmelt for discharge. Therefore, changes in snow cover due to climate change can influence distribution and availability of water. However, information about distribution of seasonal snow cover in Bhutan is not available. The MODIS snow product was used to study snow cover status and trends in Bhutan. Average snow cover area (SCA) of Bhutan estimated for the period 2002 to 2010 was 9030 sq. km, about 25.5% of the total land area. SCA trend of Bhutan for the period 2002-2010 was found to decrease (-3.27 +/- 1.28%). The average SCA for winter was 14,485 sq. km (37.7%), for spring 7411 sq. km (19.3%), for summer 4326 sq. km (11.2%), and for autumn 7788 sq. km (20.2%), mostly distributed in the elevation range 2500-6000 m amsl. Interannual and seasonal SCA trend both showed a decline, although it was not statistically significant for all sub-basins. Pho Chu sub-basin with 19.5% of the total average SCA had the highest average SCA. The rate of increase of SCA for every 100 m elevation was the highest (2.5%) in the Pa Chu sub-basin. The coefficient of variance of 1.27 indicates high variability of SCA in winter.

Bacteria and bacteriophages have evolved DNA modification as a strategy to protect their genomes. Mom protein of bacteriophage Mumodifies the phage DNA, rendering it refractile to numerous restriction enzymes and in turn enabling the phage to successfully invade a variety of hosts. A strong fortification, a combined activity of the phage and host factors, prevents untimely expression of mom and associated toxic effects. Here, we identify the bacterial chromatin architectural protein Fis as an additional player in this crowded regulatory cascade. Both in vivo and in vitro studies described here indicate that Fisacts as a transcriptional repressor of mom promoter. Further, our data shows that Fis mediates its repressive effect by denying access to RNA polymerase at mom promoter. We propose that a combined repressive effect of Fis and previously characterized negative regulatory factors could be responsible to keep the gene silenced most of the time. We thus present a new facet of Fis function in Mu biology. In addition to bringing about overall downregulation of Mu genome, it also ensures silencing of the advantageous but potentially lethal mom gene.

A number of spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) tests were performed on asphaltic road pavements by dropping a metallic 6.5 kg sphere, from a height (H) ranging from 1 to 3 m. Various combinations of source to first receiver distance (S) and receiver spacing (X) were employed. By increasing the height of the fall of the dropping mass, the maximum wavelength (lambda(max)), up to which the shear wave velocity profile can be predicted with the usage of the SASW measurements, was found to increase continuously. The height of fall of the dropping mass also seems to affect the admissible range of the wavelength for given combinations of X and S. Irrespective of different chosen combinations of S, X and H, a unique combined dispersion curve was generated in all the cases for a given pavement site as long as the threshold minimum value of the coherence function is greater than 0.90.

We report the draft genome sequence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain ST672, an emerging disease clone in India, from a septicemia patient. The genome size is about 2.82 Mb with 2,485 open reading frames (ORFs). The staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) element (type V) and immune evasion cluster appear to be different from those of strain ST772 on preliminary examination.

The thermal transitions in the copolymer of 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated to understand its use in microstereolithography. The glass transition temperature and the effect of interaction on this transition process was investigated by means of temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). The heat capacities were determined and PHDDA rich phases showed lower heat capacity than PMMA rich phases. The frequency dependence of glass transitions were studied by varying the modulation period of TMDSC and confirmed by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Vogel Fulcher Tammann Hesse (VFTH) parameters of homo and copolymers have also been reported.

Recent observations of Sun-like stars, similar to our Sun in their surface temperature (5600-6000 K) and slow rotation (rotational period > 10 d), using the Kepler satellite by Maehara et al. (2012, Nature, 485, 478) have revealed the existence of superflares (with energy of 10(33)-10(35) erg). From statistical analyses of these superflares, it was found that superflares with energy of 10(34) erg occur once in 800 yr, and superflares with 10(35) erg occur once in 5000 yr. In this paper, we examine whether superflares with energy of 10(33)-10(35) erg could occur on the present Sun through the use of simple order-of-magnitude estimates based on current ideas related to the mechanisms of the solar dynamo. If magnetic flux is generated by differential rotation at the base of the convection zone, as assumed in typical dynamo models, it is possible that the present Sun would generate a large sunspot with a total magnetic flux of similar to 2 x 10(23) Mx (= G cm(2)) within one solar cycle period, and lead to superflares with an energy of 10(34) erg. To store a total magnetic flux of similar to 10(24) Mx, necessary for generating 10(35) erg superflares, it would take similar to 40 yr. Hot Jupiters have often been argued to be a necessary ingredient for the generation of superflares, but we found that they do not play any essential role in the generation of magnetic flux in the star itself, if we consider only the magnetic interaction between the star and the hot Jupiter. This seems to be consistent with Maehara et al.'s finding of 148 superflare-generating solar-type stars that do not have a hot Jupiter-like companion. Altogether, our simple calculations, combined with Maehara et al.'s analysis of superflares on Sun-like stars, show that there is a possibility that superflares of 10(34) erg would occur once in 800 yr on our present Sun.

In this study, we present a new computational approach for studying the effect of melt convection on solidification at the micro-scale level. Models for dendritic and eutectic growth are developed on the basis of the enthalpy technique and incorporate the presence of flow in the domain. Simulation results show the growth and motion of dendrites and evolution of eutectic lamellae and their interaction with melt flow. The present study provides the foundation for development of an efficient generalized micro-scale solidification model, which can potentially be coupled with system-scale models based on the same framework.

The design and implementation of a morphing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) wing using a smart composite is attempted in this research work. Control surfaces actuated by traditional servos are difficult to instrument and fabricate on thin composite-wings of MAVs. Piezoelectric Fiber Reinforced Composites (PFRCs) are the chosen smart structural materials in the current work for incorporation onto fixed-wing MAVs to simultaneously perform the dual functions of structural load-bearing and actuation of flexure, torsion and/or extension for morphing. Further, PFRC use can be extended towards shape control of a “fixed” wing MAV to meet changing performance requirements. Wings that can warp into desired shapes and/or have variable camber are well-known to exhibit improved efficiency in aerodynamic control. During an entire flight cycle, there are multiple optimal configurations, each of which suits a particular phase of the flight regime. Widely proposed methods of wing morphing include changes in camber, twist, sweep and span. However, camber change during flight is already established, in terms of its potential, as a major factor in improving the aerofoil efficiency and flow separation behavior. Hence, for this work, morphing with camber change is adopted with the goal to better tailor aerodynamic properties.
