We consider extremal limits of the recently constructed ``subtracted geometry''. We show that extremality makes the horizon attractive against scalar perturbations, but radial evolution of such perturbations changes the asymptotics: from a conical-box to flat Minkowski. Thus these are black holes that retain their near-horizon geometry under perturbations that drastically change their asymptotics. We also show that this extremal subtracted solution (''subttractor'') can arise as a boundary of the basin of attraction for flat space attractors. We demonstrate this by using a fairly minimal action (that has connections with STU model) where the equations of motion are integrable and we are able to find analytic solutions that capture the flow from the horizon to the asymptotic region. The subttractor is a boundary between two qualitatively different flows. We expect that these results have generalizations for other theories with charged dilatonic black holes.

We demonstrate the efficacy of amorphous macroporous carbon substrates as electrodes to support neuronal cell proliferation and differentiation in electric field mediated culture conditions. The electric field was applied perpendicular to carbon substrate electrode, while growing mouse neuroblastoma (N2a) cells in vitro. The placement of the second electrode outside of the cell culture medium allows the investigation of cell response to electric field without the concurrent complexities of submerged electrodes such as potentially toxic electrode reactions, electro-kinetic flows and charge transfer (electrical current) in the cell medium. The macroporous carbon electrodes are uniquely characterized by a higher specific charge storage capacity (0.2 mC/cm(2)) and low impedance (3.3 k Omega at 1 kHz). The optimal window of electric field stimulation for better cell viability and neurite outgrowth is established. When a uniform or a gradient electric field was applied perpendicular to the amorphous carbon substrate, it was found that the N2a cell viability and neurite length were higher at low electric field strengths (<= 2.5 V/cm) compared to that measured without an applied field (0 V/cm). While the cell viability was assessed by two complementary biochemical assays (MTT and LDH), the differentiation was studied by indirect immunostaining. Overall, the results of the present study unambiguously establish the uniform/gradient vertical electric field based culture protocol to either enhance or to restrict neurite outgrowth respectively at lower or higher field strengths, when neuroblastoma cells are cultured on porous glassy carbon electrodes having a desired combination of electrochemical properties. A transient 2D axi-symmetric and lumped parameter (LP) model with constant outflow conditions have been developed to study the discharge capacity of an activated carbon bed. The predicted discharge times and variations in bed pressure and temperature are in good agreement with experimental results obtained from a 1.82 l adsorbed natural gas (ANG) storage system. Under ambient air conditions, a maximum temperature drop of 29.5 K and 45.5 K are predicted at the bed center for discharge rates of 1.0 l min(-1) and 5.0 l min(-1) respectively. The corresponding discharge efficiencies are 77% and 71.5% respectively with discharge efficiencies improving with decreasing outflow rates. Increasing the LID ratio from 1.9 to 7.8 had only a marginal increase in the discharge efficiency. Forced convection (exhaust gas) heating had a significant effect on the discharge efficiency, leading to efficiencies as high as 92.8% at a discharge of 1.0 l min(-1) and 88.7% at 5 l min(-1). Our study shows that the LP model can be reliably used to obtain discharge times due to the uniform pressure distributions in the bed. Temperature predictions with the LP model were more accurate at ambient conditions and higher discharge rates, due to greater uniformity in bed temperatures. For the low thermal conductivity carbon porous beds, our study shows that exhaust gas heating can be used as an effective and convenient strategy to improve the discharge characteristics and performance of an ANG system. Development of microporous adsorbents for separation and sequestration of carbon dioxide from flue gas streams is an area of active research. In this study, we assess the influence of specific functional groups on the adsorption selectivity of CO2/N-2 mixtures through Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. Our model system consists of a bilayer graphene nanoribbon that has been edge functionalized with OH, NH2, NO2, CH3 and COOH. Ab initio Moller-Plesset (MP2) calculations with functionalized benzenes are used to obtain binding energies and optimized geometries for CO2 and N-2. This information is used to validate the choice classical forcefields in GCMC simulations. In addition to simulations of adsorption from binary mixtures of CO2 and N-2, the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) is used to predict mixture isotherms. Our study reveals that functionalization always leads to an increase in the adsorption of both CO2 and N-2 with the highest for COOH. However, significant enhancement in the selectivity for CO2 is only seen with COOH functionalized nanoribbons. The COOH functionalization gives a 28% increase in selectivity compared to H terminated nanoribbons, whereas the improvement in the selectivity for other functional groups are much Enure modest. Our study suggests that specific functionalization with COOH groups can provide a material's design strategy to improve CO2 selectivity in microporous adsorbents. This work deals with an experimental study of the breakup characteristics of liquids with different surface tension and viscosity from a hollow cone hydraulic injector nozzle induced by pressure-swirl. The experiments were conducted at Reynolds numbers Re-p=9500-23,000. The surface tension and viscosity of the surrogate fuels were altered from 72 to 30 mN/m and 1.1 to 1.6 mN s/m(2), respectively. High speed photography and Phase Doppler Particle Anemometry were utilized to study the atomization process. Velocity and drop size measurements of the spray using PDPA in both axial and radial directions indicate a dependency on surface tension. However, these effects are dominant only at low Reynolds numbers and are negligible at high Reynolds number. Downstream of the nozzle, coalescence of droplets due to collision was also found to be significant and the diameters were compared for different liquids. For viscous fluids up to 1.6 cP, the independent effects of viscosity and injection pressure are studied. In general, the spray cone angle increases with increase in pressure. At high pressures, an increase in viscosity leads to higher drop sizes following primary and secondary breakup compared to water. This study will extend our understanding of surrogate fuel film breakup and highlight the importance of long and short wavelength instabilities. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Lithium sodium titanate insertion-type anode has been synthesized by classical solid-state (dry) and an alternate solution-assisted (wet) sonochemical synthesis routes. Successful synthesis of the target compound has been realized using simple Na- and Li-hydroxide salts along with titania. In contrast to the previous reports, these energy-savvy synthesis routes can yield the final product by calcination at 650 -750 degrees C for limited duration of 1-10 h. Owing to the restricted calcination duration (dry route for 1-2 h and wet route for 1-5 h), they yield homogeneous nanoscale lithium sodium titanate particles. Sono-chemical synthesis reduces the lithium sodium titanate particle size down to 80-100 nm vis-a-vis solid-state method delivering larger (200-500 nm) particles. Independent of the synthetic methods, the end products deliver reversible electrochemical performance with reversible capacity exceeding 80 mAh.g(-1) acting as a 1.3 V anode for Li-ion batteries. El presente trabajo experimental se estableció - en terrenos del Programa de Recursos Genéticos Nicaragüenses (REGEN), adscrito a la Universidad Nacional Agraria, ubicada en Managua, kilómetro 12 y medio de la carretera Norte, durante los meses de Noviembre de 1996 a Febrero de 1997. Con la finalidad de evaluar el comportamiento del cultivo del maíz mays L.) variedad NB-6 con diferentes tratamientos del abono orgánico EM Bokashi en comparación con el fertilizante completo 12-24-12 y urea al 46% utilizando un diseño de bloques completos al azar con 3 repeticiones. Se valoraron ciertos parámetros tanto en el crecimiento y desarrollo de la planta como en los rendimientos obtenidos. Entre algunas variables evaluadas tenemos la altura de planta, diámetro del tallo, área de la lámina foliar, peso de la mazorca, longitud de fa mazorca y rendimiento, entre otras. Los resultados reflejan que el biofertilizante EM Bokashi influyó significativamente en el crecimiento y desarrollo del cultivo, obteniéndose el rendimiento más alto con el tratamiento No.4; compuesto de cascarilla de arroz, gallinaza, estiércol de vaca y EM, cuyo rendimiento fue de 2,101.6 Kg / ha, mientras que con la fertilización química se obtuvieron 2,057.0 Kg 1 ha. Así mismo al realizar un análisis económico se pudo comprobar que con el tratamiento No.4 se obtuvo el mayor beneficio neto con 2,410.78 C$/ha con una rentabilidad de 77% y con el tratamiento No.5 o testigo relativo el cual consistió del completo 12-24-12 y urea al 46% se obtuvieron 2,073.0 C$/ha, con una rentabilidad de 62%. Además se puede afirmar que con el uso del biofertilizante EM Bokashi se reducen los costos de producción, se mejoran los productos agrícolas y se mantienen los niveles productivos del suelo, además se optimiza la tierra y los cultivos, es decir se pueden lograr mayores beneficios.

El estudio fue realizado en la Unidad Productiva “Hacienda Las Mercedes” patrimonio de la Universidad Nacional Agraria (UNA). El objetivo fue contribuir a la conservación del Bosque de Galería mediante la aplicación del tratamiento silvicultural de enriquecimiento y repoblación con la especie Iguana iguana. La metodología se desarrolló iniciando con una visita de reconocimiento a La ribera de la Presa Los Sábalos (sitio de la plantación forestal) y a la ribera Presa Las Mercedes (sitio para la repoblación con iguanas). El experimento de de repoblación forestal inició con el establecimiento de seis parcelas con especies forestales ( Pithecellobium saman (jacq) Bent, Swietenia humilis Zucc, Guazuma ulmifolia Lam, Calycophyllum candidissimum (Vahl) DC, Albizzia caribeae (Urb).B&R y Dalbergia retusa Hemsl) en un área de 0.22 ha. Dentro de cada parcela se ubicó una parcela útil (16 individuos) para realizar el levantamiento de datos dasométricos (altura cm, diámetro basal mm y sobrevivencia) y análisis estadístico. Luego se identificaron las especies vegetales presentes en la plantación y se monitoreo (caracterización del sitio) de Iguana iguana (Iguana verde) y Ctenosaura similis (Garrobo negro también conocida como iguana rayada), para lo cual se establecieron seis transeptos (156 m, 200 m, 209 m, 212 m, 190 m y 198 m) en 4.9 ha con la aplicación del método de King. Posteriormente se estableció la repoblación con la especie Iguana iguana; para ello se introdujeron 18 hembras y 6 machos. Por último se realizo el procesamiento y análisis de la información obtenida. Los mayores incrementos promedios totales y mensuales en altura y diámetro basal se presentaron en C. candidissimum (Vahl) DC (21.93 cm y 3.655 cm y 0.34 mm y 0.057 mm). En la sobrevivencia los valores de excelente (100%) lo obtuvieron las especies C. candidissimum (Vahl) DC y D. retusa Hemsl y entre los buenos resultaron G. ulmifolia (76%) y S. humilis (67%). La sobrevivencia promedio de las especies forestales establecidas fue de (87 %). 10 especies vegetales fueron identificadas (Elitraria imbricata, Baltimora recta, Sida acuta, Lantara camara, Rowolfio tetrafila, Commelina difusa, Priva lappulaceae, Mimosa pudica, Datura stramonium y Solanum? americanum). En el primer monitoreo no se encontró Iguana iguana solo la Ctenosaura similis (52 individuos), observado en los transeptos 2, 4 y 6 (en sitios con árboles grandes y frondosos, distantes de la fuente de agua. Después de la repoblación, la especie Iguana iguana (51 individuos) se observó en los transectos 2, 5 y 6 (en sitios próximos a fuentes de agua, árboles pequeños. Y Ctenosaura similis (48 individuos) se observó en los transectos 2, 3, 4 y 6.

Redox-active ruthenium complexes have been covalently attached to the surface of a series of natural, semisynthetic and recombinant cytochromes c. The protein derivatives were characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques. Distant Fe^(2+) - Ru^(3+) electronic couplings were extracted from intramolecular electron-transfer rates in Ru(bpy)_2(im)HisX (where X= 33, 39, 62, and 72) derivatives of cyt c. The couplings increase according to 62 (0.0060) < 72 (0.057) < 33 (0.097) < 39 (0.11 cm^(-1)); however, this order is incongruent with histidine to heme edge-edge distances [62 (14.8) > 39 (12.3) > 33 (11.1) > =72 (8.4 Å)]. These results suggest the chemical nature of the intervening medium needs to be considered for a more precise evaluation of couplings. The rates (and couplings) correlate with the lengths of a-tunneling pathways comprised of covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds and through-space jumps from the histidines to the heme group. Space jumps greatly decrease couplings: one from Pro71 to Met80 extends the σ-tunneling length of the His72 pathway by roughly 10 covalent bond units. Experimental couplings also correlate well with those calculated using extended Hiickel theory to evaluate the contribution of the intervening protein medium.

Two horse heart cyt c variants incorporating the unnatural amino acids (S)-2- amino-3-(2,2'-bipyrid-6-yl)-propanoic acid (6Bpa) and (S)-2-amino-3-(2,2'-bipyrid-4-yl)propanoic acid ( 4Bpa) at position 72 have been prepared using semisynthetic protocols. Negligible perturbation of the protein structure results from this introduction of unnatural amino acids. Redox-active Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)_2^(2+) binds to 4Bpa72 cyt c but not to the 6Bpa protein. Enhanced ET rates were observed in the Ru(bpy)_2^(2+)-modified 4Bpa72 cyt c relative to the analogous His72 derivative. The rapid (< 60 nanosecond) photogeneration of ferrous Ru-modified 4Bpa72 cyt c in the conformationally altered alkaline state demonstrates that laser-induced ET can be employed to study submicrosecond protein-folding events.

A aterosclerose e suas complicações são a principal causa de morbidade e mortalidade no mundo ocidental. O aumento da espessura da camada médio-intimal da carótida está associado com risco para doenças cardiovasculares, pois representa um marcador de aterosclerose subclínica, podendo ser detectada precocemente em indivíduos assintomáticos. O objetivo desse estudo foi identificar variáveis clínicas e nutricionais associadas com a aterosclerose subclínica em mulheres hipertensas. Estudo transversal envolvendo uma amostra de conveniência composta por 116 mulheres hipertensas entre 40 e 65 anos. Dados clínicos, como pressão arterial (PA) sistólica e diastólica, história de tabagismo, atividade física, uso de medicamentos foram coletados; foi feita a análise do perfil lipídico, glicemia e proteína C reativa (PCR); a avaliação dietética obtida pelo Recordatório de 24 horas e pelo Registro de três dias. A espessura médio-intimal (EMI) de carótidas foi realizada pelo aparelho de ultrassonografia. As pacientes foram divididas em dois grupos, de acordo com os valores da espessura médio-intimal de carótidas: EMI 0,9mm ou EMI > 0,9mm. Houve diferença significativa entre os grupos em relação à idade (50,846,62 vs 53,547,13; p=0,044), PA sistólica (134,5216,54 vs 142,9821,47; p=0,020), pressão de pulso (PP) (49,3611,03 vs 60,15 17,77; p<0,001), HDL (48,988,54 vs 44,057,45; p=0,004) e PCR (2,311,21 vs 3,051,34; p=0,016). Não houve diferença significativa em relação aos parâmetros antropométricos, exceto em relação à reactância (65,199,69 vs 61,447,88; p=0,036), avaliada pela bioimpedância elétrica (BIA). Quanto ao padrão de consumo alimentar, somente o consumo de gordura monoinsaturada foi diferente entre os grupos, sendo o maior consumo no grupo com menor valor de EMI (7,882,09 vs 7,022,06; p=0,031). Não houve diferença em relação à frequência de tabagismo e atividade física. Quando foi feita a análise de correlação da amostra, foi encontrada uma correlação entre a EMI de carótidas e idade (r=0,25; p=0,0067), PAS (r=0,19; p=0,0086); PP (r=0,30; p=0,0009), LDL (r=0,19; p=0,0434), assim como com gordura monoinsaturada (r= -0,25; p=0,0087), PCR (r=0,31; p=0,007) e HDL (r=-0,33; p=0,0004), porém apenas as variáveis HDL, PCRus e pressão de pulso mostraram ser preditoras independentes da EMI de carótida após feita uma análise de regressão linear multivariada. A proteína C reativa, HDL colesterol e pressão de pulso são importantes preditores independentes de aterosclerose subclínica.

紫色砂页岩沟状重水土流失区,土层十分干旱,常见绿化造林树种极难生长。根据这种情况,1983年始,应用多年来对银合欢属树种具有耐高温、耐干旱,适宜碱性土壤生长的观察研究结果,在南雄县13个自然村,500公顷低丘陵荒坡地、应用银合欢属树种营造水保林,综合治理水土流失试验。经三年试验,从26个银合欢引种材料中,选出适宜当地生长的三个优良品种,提出了一套树种栽培营林和水保工程措施相结合的治理技术。经治理三年的营林地段,水土流失年冲刷模数(固体迳流)从未治理的每平方公里对照区流失量19.057吨下降到每平方公里流失量5.372吨每公里长林带(林带宽1.5米)生产造纸用材9.8吨,供饲料生产的干嫩叶2.8吨。该项研究,在国内率先提出了控制紫色砂页岩地区水土流失的先进技术,具有在我国同类型地区推广应用价值。

Em pacientes hipertensos e diabéticos, o sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona está relacionado com disfunção endotelial, rigidez vascular e aterosclerose. As principais medicações disponíveis para a inibição desse sistema são os inibidores da enzima conversora de angiotensina e os bloqueadores do receptor AT1 de angiotensina. A maioria das diretrizes internacionais faz as mesmas recomendações para as duas classes, mas diferenças no seu mecanismo de ação podem ter relevância clínica. O objetivo principal foi comparar benazepril e losartana em pacientes hipertensos e diabéticos com pressão arterial não controlada por anlodipino, analisando parâmetros inflamatórios (proteína C reativa), da função endotelial (através da dilatação mediada por fluxo da artéria braquial) e de rigidez vascular (através da velocidade da onda de pulso e das pressões aórticas). O objetivo secundário foi, através de uma análise post-hoc, pesquisar se há interação entre as estatinas e os inibidores do sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona. Pressão arterial, função endotelial e rigidez vascular foram comparados entre usuários e não-usuários de estatina. Os dados estão apresentados como mediana (intervalo interquartil). Os resultados principais mostraram que o grupo benazepril apresentou menor proteína C reativa [0,38 (0,15-0,95) mg/dl vs 0,42 (0,26-0,59) mg/dl, p=0,020]. Houve, ainda, uma leve melhora da dilatação mediada por fluxo da artéria braquial no grupo benazepril (aumento 45%, p=0,057) em comparação com o grupo losartana (aumento 19%, p=0,132). Não houve diferença na velocidade da onda de pulso [8,5 (7,8-9,4) m/s vs 8,5 (7,0-9,7) m/s, p=0,280] e na pressão aórtica sistólica [129 (121-145) mmHg vs 123 (117-130) mmHg, p=0,934] entre os grupos benazepril e losartana. Nos resultados secundários, observou-se que o grupo usuário de estatina apresentou maior redução na pressão arterial sistólica média das 24 horas [134 (120-146) mmHg para 122 (114-135) mmHg, p=0,007] e melhora na dilatação mediada por fluxo da artéria braquial [6,5% (5,1-7,1) para 10,9% (7,3-12,2), p=0,003] quando comparado com o grupo não usuário [137 (122-149) mmHg para 128 (122-140) mmHg, p=0,362, e 7,5% (6,0-10,2) para 8,3% (7,5-9,9), p=0,820, respectivamente]. Não houve diferença na velocidade de onda de pulso e nas pressões aórticas entre usuários ou não de estatina. Pode-se concluir que, em pacientes diabéticos com a pressão arterial não controlada por anlodipino, o benazepril promoveu maior redução da proteína C reativa e melhora da função endotelial em relação à losartana. Além disso, o uso combinado de estatinas, anlodipino e inibidores do sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona melhorou a resposta anti-hipertensiva e a função endotelial em pacientes hipertensos e diabéticos.
