Simulations have investigated single laser 100G Ethernet links enabled by CAP-16 using QAM receivers that not only lower significantly system timing jitter sensitivity but also outperform PAM and standard CAP in terms of power margin. © 2013 OSA.

We demonstrate an uncooled WDM system using standard WDM components and receiver signal processing, with a different number of receivers to transmitters, to allow wide temperature drift of the transmitter lasers. A 100 Gb/s 8-wavelength demonstrator has been developed, which proves the feasibility of the approach over 25 km of SMF. © 2012 OSA.

A mode for generating a sequence of spectrally limited pulses with a duration of 2 nsec and a repetition frequency of approximately 100 GHz in AlGaAs/GaAs by an injection heterolaser, which has amplifying and absorbing parts combined in a common resonator, is discussed.

A new dynamic regime in a multisegmented AlGaAs/GaAs DH injection laser has been realised. Generation of bandwidth-limited 100 GHz repetition rate pulses has been demonstrated. This value is claimed to be the largest ever reported for an ultrashort pulse repetition frequency obtained directly from a laser.

A theoretical study compares 100 Gb/s Ethernet links and finds that multi-pulse and hybrid CAP-16/QAM-16 (PAM-8) schemes support transmission over 10 km (2 km) SMF. Multi-pulse and CAP-16/QAM-16 need 2× the number of arithmetic operations and 7× or 3× the number of filter taps respectively but exhibit reduced power dissipation compared with PAM-8.

We demonstrate a 10 x 10 Gb/s uncooled DWDM system using orthogonal coding on adjacent carriers, assuming the use of a monolithically integrated sources. A power saving of 72% is expected over traditional WDM. © 2014 OSA.

100 Gb/s PAM4-CAP2 modulation is demonstrated for next-generation datacommunication links. Simulation studies indicate a power budget advantage of 2.5 dBo relative to PAM8 modulation. A real-time experimental demonstration is performed. © OSA 2014.

A flat, fully strain-relaxed Si0.72Ge0.28 thin film was grown on Si (1 0 0) substrate with a combination of thin low-temperature (LT) Ge and LT-Si0.72Ge0.28 buffer layers by ultrahigh vacuum chemical vapor deposition. The strain relaxation ratio in the Si0.72Ge0.28 film was enhanced up to 99% with the assistance of three-dimensional Ge islands and point defects introduced in the layers, which furthermore facilitated an ultra-low threading dislocation density of 5 x 10(4) cm (2) for the top SiGe film. More interestingly, no cross-hatch pattern was observed on the SiGe surface and the surface root-mean-square roughness was less than 2 nm. The temperature for the growth of LT-Ge layer was optimized to be 300 degrees C. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-quality Ge epilayer on Si(1 0 0) substrate with an inserted low-temperature Ge seed layer and a thin Si0.77Ge0.23 layer was grown by ultrahigh vacuum chemical vapor deposition. The epitaxial Ge layer with surface root-mean-square roughness of 0.7 nm and threading dislocation density of 5 x 10(5) cm(-2) was obtained. The influence of low temperature Ge seed layer on the quality of Ge epilayer was investigated. We demonstrated that the relatively higher temperature (350 degrees C) for the growth of Ge seed layer significantly improved the crystal quality and the Hall hole mobility of the Ge epilayer. The formation process of InAs quantum dots (QDs) on vicinal GaAs (1 0 0) substrates is studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that after 1.2 MLs of InAs deposition, while the QDs with diameters less than the width of the multi-atomic steps are shrinking, the larger QDs are growing. Photoluminescence measurements of the uncapped QDs correspond well to the AFM structure observations of the QDs. We propose that the QDs undergo an anomalous coarsening process with modified growth kinetics resulting from the restrictions of the finite terrace sizes. A comparison between the QDs on the vicinal GaAs (1 0 0) substrates and the QDs on the exact GaAs (1 0 0) further verifies the effect of the multi-atomic steps on the formation of QDs.
