In the last years there has been a clear evolution in the world of telecommunications, which goes from new services that need higher speeds and higher bandwidth, until a role of interactions between people and machines, named by Internet of Things (IoT). So, the only technology able to follow this growth is the optical communications. Currently the solution that enables to overcome the day-by-day needs, like collaborative job, audio and video communications and share of les is based on Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (G-PON) with the recently successor named Next Generation Passive Optical Network Phase 2 (NG-PON2). This technology is based on the multiplexing domain wavelength and due to its characteristics and performance becomes the more advantageous technology. A major focus of optical communications are Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). These can include various components into a single device, which simpli es the design of the optical system, reducing space and power consumption, and improves reliability. These characteristics make this type of devices useful for several applications, that justi es the investments in the development of the technology into a very high level of performance and reliability in terms of the building blocks. With the goal to develop the optical networks of future generations, this work presents the design and implementation of a PIC, which is intended to be a universal transceiver for applications for NG-PON2. The same PIC will be able to be used as an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) or an Optical Network Unit (ONU) and in both cases as transmitter and receiver. Initially a study is made of Passive Optical Network (PON) and its standards. Therefore it is done a theoretical overview that explores the materials used in the development and production of this PIC, which foundries are available, and focusing in SMART Photonics, the components used in the development of this chip. For the conceptualization of the project di erent architectures are designed and part of the laser cavity is simulated using Aspic™. Through the analysis of advantages and disadvantages of each one, it is chosen the best to be used in the implementation. Moreover, the architecture of the transceiver is simulated block by block through the VPItransmissionMakerand it is demonstrated its operating principle. Finally it is presented the PIC implementation.

Avulsion, epidermal marsupialization, and infection cause failure at the skin-material interface. A robust interface would permit implantable robotics, prosthetics, and other medical devices; reconstruction of surgical defects, and long-term access to blood vessels and body cavities. Torus-shaped cap-scaffold structures were designed to work in conjunction with negative pressure to address the three causes of failure. Six wounds were made on the backs of each of four 3-month old pigs. Four unmodified (no caps) scaffolds were implanted along with 20 cap-scaffolds. Collagen type 4 was attached to 21 implants. Negative pressure then was applied. Structures were explanted and assessed histologically at day 7 and day 28. At day 28, there was close tissue apposition to scaffolds, without detectable reactions from defensive or interfering cells. Three cap-scaffolds explanted at day 28 showed likely attachment of epidermis to the cap or cap-scaffold junction, without deeper marsupialization. The combination of toric-shaped cap-scaffolds with negative pressure appears to be an intrinsically biocompatible system, enabling a robust skin-material interface. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Energy efficiency of a building has become a major requirement since the building sector produces 40%-50% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. This can be achieved by improving building’s performance through energy savings, by adopting energy efficient technologies and reducing CO2 emissions. There exist several technologies with less or no environmental impact that can be used to reduce energy consumption of the buildings. Earth pipe cooling system is one of them, which works with a long buried pipe with one end for intake air and the other end for providing air cooled by soil to the building. It is an approach for cooling a room in a passive process without using any habitual mechanical unit. The paper investigates the thermal performance of a horizontal earth pipe cooling system in a hot and humid subtropical climatic zone in Queensland, Australia. An integrated numerical model for the horizontal earth pipe cooling system and the room (or building) was developed using ANSYS Fluent to measure the thermal performance of the system. The impact of air temperature, soil temperature, air velocity and relative humidity on room cooling performance has also been assessed. As the soil temperature was below the outdoor minimum temperature during the peak warming hours of the day, it worked as an effective heat sink to cool the room. Both experimental and numerical results showed a temperature reduction of 1.11oC in the room utilizing horizontal earth pipe cooling system which will assist to save the energy cost in the buildings.

Marketing communications as a discipline has changed significantly in both theory and practice over the past decade. But has our teaching of IMC kept pace with the discipline changes? The purpose of this paper is to explore how far the evolving concepts of IMC are reaching university learners. By doing this, the paper offers an approach to assessing how well marketing curricula are fulfilling their purpose. The course outlines (syllabi) for all IMC courses in 30 universities in Australia and five universities in New Zealand were analyzed. The findings suggest that most of what is taught in the units is not IMC. It is not directed by the key constructs of IMC, nor by the research informing the discipline. Rather, it appears to have evolved little from traditional promotion management units and is close in content and structure to many introductory advertising courses. This paper suggests several possible explanations for this, including: (1) a tacit rejection of IMC as a valid concept; (2) a lack of information about what IMC is and what it is not; and (3) a scarcity of teaching and learning materials that are clearly focused on key constructs and research issues of IMC.
